Love the Triangle and 2 commentary!
?The Bulgarian Brothers - a story of two brothers (Oggy and Dinko) as they coach in the NCAA and the NBA.

?Ask me about the Xbox Ally handheld - I'm on the team that made it.

Tovarich: Sorry to the 9 people who watched the first half. That was brutal offense. We found it in the second half luckily and they didn't really. Wheless was the only one hurting us, finally had to double him every time he touched the ball just so I didn't have to watch him score anymore.

Reporter: How would you describe Grady's night?

Tovarich: Wild. His first two shots were blocked by the rim, so I sat him for a minute to see if he could compose himself. Then he gets stuffed FOUR times in a row. It at least was by an actual human being this time though. So at 0-6, I gave up and sat him. Guy was cursed. David Copperfield would've come in and made the basket disappear to prevent him from putting the ball in it. Then he made 7 in a row after halftime before finally missing his last two? Crazy stuff.

      Reporter: How about the rebounding?

Tovarich: I'm stunned we apparently were +3 in rebounds. It must have been all their rushed shots at the end because their offensive rebounding in the first half was killing us, I think it was 7? Embarrassing. We just stopped missing in the second half so I guess they didn't have as many chances, but I still wouldn't call rebounding a triumph. It almost never is.

Reporter: Why is the 3-point shooting so inconsistent?

Tovarich: Literally everything is inconsistent, from one road trip to another, from one game to another. Hell, from one half to another we're all over the place compared to the last sometimes. Our best shooters don't start, so the guys who are starting need to be better at other things to make up for it. I'm a little too patient with the starters sometimes when I need to go to some better shooting. I'd love if my assistant could scout people's outside shooting specifically. All I get is a grade for shooting and I end up with some guys who don't shoot 3's well and that's what I want their main function to be.

Reporter: How will it feel to be back at home after a long 5-game road trip?

Tovarich: If you're going to fly 5,000 miles or whatever, you may as well stay a while. Disappointing trip. We don't get a lot of home games, but we're generally pretty good at them. Haven't had anything less than a sellout yet. Life on the road is just a reality of being Independent.

Tovarich: Of all the bad starts to a game we've ever had, I have to think that was the worst.

Reporter: What went wrong at the beginning?

Tovarich: Oof, where to start...We were down 9-0. It took 3:45 to score a point, which was from the FT line finally. Their center had 6 rebounds in 3 minutes. It took us 8 to get there as a team. We started 0/9 from 3. At 18-8, I felt like I had to put the press on or we might have been down like 20 at halftime. We finally accepted 3's were not happening and stopped there. Grady was starting much like the last game where he was 0/3. Wilkins was the only good scorer in the first half. Farley did all his damage in the second when 3's magically starting falling. We did a good job coming back in rebounds from the disastrous start.

Reporter: Is it disappointing to drop 2 spots in the RPI after beating Delaware?

Tovarich: It's not surprising. We just beat #240. Next up is #258. Then our big time opponent left is #149. Then we go to #249 and #326 and come home for Senior Day against the #308 team. We of course are capable of losing to any of those too. Texas A&M is the only team who beat us who seems to be any good. UConn is trudging along at 11-8. Monmouth, Portland State and North Dakota State are .500 or worse. Even Minnesota is 7-12. We didn't have much SOS this year and we still couldn't handle it. We're simply not consistent enough to be a tournament team. We'll go get some more "experience" in the NIT for the 3rd year of 4.

Tovarich: You'd think it's almost impossible for EVERY guard and small forward to struggle simultaneously, yet that's not really the first time. Outside shooting wasn't happening. All the big guys had a really good game at the same time? That's some real sorcery going on there. Anyway, I think Portland for not shooting 70% in the second half like they did in the first. It was look tough there early down 31-23 before we turned it around.

            Reporter: How's recruiting looking?

Tovarich: We only had 1 scholarship offer out to a PG. I'm holding on to the second one for now. I learned last offseason it might be better to hold on to those and see how things play out. We had a chance to get a 5* JuCo PG but we'd already signed Crawford so I ended up going for a 4* PF instead because the PG position is not critical to our offense. With Wolfe almost sure to leave, we'll need another. We'll be down to just one C next year, so I'm going hard for one, but we're relying on someone to fall through the cracks. I said hope wasn't a good strategy for the triangle and 2, but hope sure works in recruiting so far. Lots of guys are just plan B or plan C for someone who turns out not to need one. And we're there to pick up the pieces if we can. We should end up with 4 scholarships when Wolfe and Bryan leave, so we'll see just who the best we can get at any position is as long as we grab a C and a PG. Maybe there'll be a nice transfer who wants to come in for a season, we'll see.

Reporter: Will you be watching Southern Utah's next game since one more loss by them will clinch the NIT autobid for you?

Tovarich: Definitely not. I'm worried you're even following that.

Reporter: Isn't it better than no postseason?

Tovarich: Barely. Winning the NIT didn't carry much momentum over for us. We lost our opener to Portland State and never really recovered.

Tovarich: Luckily we built up a nice lead in the first half and that they were sloppy with the ball because their 56% 3-point shooting was insane. 7/11 in the second half was getting hard to keep up with. The big guys did a good job attacking the press. Grady had a great first half. Then he became the victim of their amazing defense where they blocked 5 of his 8 shots in the second half. Crazy stuff there. It makes you wonder how they've lost 5 in a row because they were just 11-8 a couple weeks ago.

Reporter: Why do you think your perimiter defense often struggles to stop jump shooters?

Tovarich: Even if we play good defense and get a hand in someone's face, the other teams seems amazing. I don't know what to do, sometimes it doesn't feel like it matters what we do. We just wait and see if they were going to miss it or make it. Twice we fouled someone on a 3 today, allegedly. It all can feel out of your control. Sometimes we're a little too far off trying to guard the passing lanes. It's a bit of a tradeoff. We get a lot of steals, and we deflect a lot of passes and maybe we leave jump shooters just a little bit too open doing it. But I'll err on the side of the way we're doing it now.

Reporter: You haven't made many intentional FT shooting opportunities this season. How have you settled on who will shoot them in that scenario?

Tovarich: Usually you like your PG to do that. Crawford's motion is complicated and I don't like it. He's only 7/16 for a reason. Pippen actually made his first FT of the season there at the end. He was 0/6 before today. We gave Farley a chance and he was good. I'd actually prefer the big guys. They have so much more practice shooting FT's that I'm more comfortable with their experience there. All the SF's and guards on the roster have a combined 62 FT's. Wilkins, Riley and Grady all have more attempts individually.

Reporter: You've never played zone. Do you ever consider it?

Tovarich: Somehow I don't think that'll help our already miserable 3-point defense.

Tovarich: The guys were confused at halftime when I told them no more 3's. They said coach "we just went 8 for 13, we're feelin' it, let's keep shooting" and I said no. It wasn't going to work in the second half. Then I told them Auburn was about to catch fire from 3. They're like "no way coach, they just bricked 8 in a row, let 'em shoot!" And I said, "trust me, it's going to do a 180 from the first half". We started 1/5 before Luz hit one late. They started 4/5 before they cooled off and fired off too many quick 3's in the last 2 minutes.

                  Reporter: Did you bench Grady?

Tovarich: Yeah, he got stuffed 4 times in 5 shots. It was like, automatic that it was going to happen. He got 1 rebound the whole game. The other big guys were great. Wilkins had a rough start missing his first 2 against the press, but he found it. Riley and Carbaugh were great. Atkinson even was good. I just accepted that the basketball gods pre-determined Grady was going to get destroyed by their center and that it was just better if we looked elsewhere. He carries us a lot but it was obvious from his first 3 shots and the 8-1 rebounding margin that it wasn't happening today.

Reporter: Why was the matchup against you so good for their center?

Tovarich: We make a lot of centers look like Dikembe Mutombo. The block numbers against us are crazy lopsided. It'd be so much worse if those statisticians logged those correctly, but they have some oddly strict definition of what a block is for some reason.

Reporter: Is it because he was a SR?

Tovarich: We can make FR C's look awesome too.

Reporter: Does it still count as a good win because they're a power opponent despite their struggles?

Tovarich: It is to me. Whether it is to the SOS and the RPI and the committee, I doubt it did us much good.

Reporter: Northern Arizona has won 2 in a row. Are you worried they have some momentum?

Tovarich: Great, maybe their RPI is in the top 300 now so our SOS doesn't look even worse than it did before.

Tovarich: That was one of the uglier wins I've ever experienced. Luckily there aren't really style points in college basketball. We wouldn't get any for that and wouldn't have too many overall.

Reporter: Did you think the 3-point shooting would magically reverse itself this game?

Tovarich: No, since both teams were awful at it. I think we were 2/9 at half and they were 1/8, so there wasn't much expectation for THAT to reverse itself. Something always change though. Grady had 9 rebounds at halftime and you think the school record of 12 is a shoe-in and he goes and gets a whopping ONE after halftime.

                    Reporter: Why is Grady struggling?

Tovarich: I don't know. He's a block magnet. They only gave NAU 5 blocks, it was more like 10 and almost all of them were him. It's a recent thing. We get outblocked badly as a team, but he specifically has become the perfect mark for everyone apparently. He rebounded today, so maybe that's why he wasn't allowed to score. Can't have both :rolls eyes:

Reporter: What is the plan for Senior Day?

Tovarich: We'll start Spears and Atkinson. Hopefully it doesn't go like last year. We'll probably end up with a home game in the NIT somewhere, but we can't really predict the location nonsense of those games, so we'll pretend this is it.

Tovarich: I was starting to think for a while there that starting the SR's who don't play isn't worth it, because it seems to just throw everything off. But Spears had a nice night. Farley killed it. Atkinson struggled. But it's a meaningless game, so might as well play them both. I know it's not the career trajectory either of them were expecting to both start as FR, and then by SR year you've been pushed aside and barely get on the court, but they were invaluable and that's why I pep talked them into staying last year when I think they'd both have left otherwise.

Reporter: Is that the worst rebounding game ever?

Tovarich: 11 has to be the worst. -14 is not the worst. We barely forced any misses. They were on fire. Luckily we were too. We hit our FT's at the end because they hit 3 3's in a row there in the last minute. I figured Spears was as good of a choice as any at the line and he came through.

Reporter: Are the guys who didn't start and lost minutes going to have their confidence hurt?

Tovarich: Yeah, you'd like to think people's egos aren't so fragile, but I can already see they're feeling bad about themselves over it.

Reporter: Is it discouraging that Joe Lunardi doesn't even have you on the bubble?

Tovarich: It's expected. I don't know how it works. We're at 45 in the RPI and not even in consideration. 17-10 SMU with an RPI of 62 is listed as in the tournament. So, who knows? We had too many bad losses to cupcakes. Even a game like Minnesota, they've got an awful record and it looks bad.

Reporter: Do you think there's any hope then?

Tovarich: No. It's been my observation that all these long breaks after our season before selection sunday only make us drop down the order. Big schools have tons of opportunities at quality wins. Bidstealers take bubble spots away, not add to them. It's only 16 days this season. Last year it was 23. We have to be comfortably in when our last game is played with 4 losses or fewer. I'm no longer sure if 5 is even good enough. It's crazy the standard to get in as an independent. We made it seem easy because we were so ahead of schedule in season 2 there, but it's proven to be even more difficult with superior quality since then.

Reporter: Will you make scheduling adjustments?

Tovarich: I'm not sure. It's really not fun to spend an entire year testing theories about how to schedule and see if it works or doesn't work. Do we play a cupcake schedule and see if we can go 28-3? Would that even work since our SOS would be so terrible? Do I need the 7ish power schools we play a year to help our SOS? Do I schedule 18 power opponents and see if they'll let us in at 18-13 like they do the big schools? Somehow I doubt it works like that, and we can't get many power teams up here anyway. We get them in tournaments or we go on the road. Precious few would make a trip up here, so we can't play a schedule like a power schools typically does with half of our big opponents at home.

Reporter: So what will you do for the next 16 days?

Tovarich: I'm gonna go guest star on Ice Road Truckers, maybe pan for some gold in the Klondike, and go shoot the gun to start the Iditarod.
