Did you show up as a bubble team in the selection Sunday show? Or not even a call out there?
?The Bulgarian Brothers - a story of two brothers (Oggy and Dinko) as they coach in the NCAA and the NBA.

?Ask me about the Xbox Ally handheld - I'm on the team that made it.

Tovarich: We obviously had lost that game long before we even got on the court. That's one of the most amazing performances I've ever seen. It looked pretty hopeless down 20-6 in 4 minutes and it was. 8/10 3's and 32 points from a guy who averaged 7.3 ppg coming in is hilarious. Their 3rd string C had 7 boards when he averages 2 per game. We missed our first 9 3's. We got it down to 3 a couple times, but it immediately prompted a hilarious string of events to get it right back to 9 or so. Whatever, I don't really care. Winning the NIT did nothing for us last year. I'm really not going to lose any sleep over it. We probably wouldn't even have been invited without the autobid as we were a 6 seed and only ahead of other other autobids.

Reporter: Why do you think they were pressing up 13 late and still shooting 3's quickly on every possession?

Tovarich: That's how they were programmed. I'll add 'em to the list with Portland State and Connecticut. I'm not sure we'll be able to do anything about it, but maybe Beeler can go for 33 next year.

Reporter: Have you decided on a schedule for next year?

Tovarich: We have 14 home and home's to finish. We still owe some teams a home game from our very first season. UConn and La Salle are definitely happening. Other than that, I don't know. I can adjust some of what the AD comes up with and pat him on the head before I destroy most of the schedule with a red marker. We're just about guaranteed 2 or possibly 3 power schools in our home tournament. Along with UConn and La Salle, I'm not sure it behooves us to play too many more. I'll see what it looks like and what games I like and build around it.

Reporter: Did the team just lack motivation today?

Tovarich: I was pretty unmotivated. Down 20-6 right off the bat, and seeing turnovers, blocks, bricks while they make their first 3 from 3 and one guy is singlehandedly outscoring you 13-6 and one guy is outrebounding your team 5-2, it's easy to mail it in. For appearance's sake, we pressed down 20-6 and went through the motions but it was obvious we never had a chance. I'm ready to move on to recruiting.

Never were close. We were the 2nd lowest 6 seed in the NIT only ahead of autobids, so 23rd team in. Our RPI of 41 did us no good. Someone was at 39 and left out. Two teams in the 60's made it and 4 in the 50's. I probably needed a 27-4 season to have a chance and I'm not sure 2 more wins would've moved me up 24 spots to get in.

Re: University of Alaska-Anchorage Basketball (CH2K8)

Tovarich: The AD is trying to distract from the fact that hockey is struggling, so he's making me do the preseason press conference that I keep skipping. Obviously recruiting is the biggest part of the offseason, so our recruits:
                      #10 Class
Vince Hale 5* #6 PG #20 OVR Oakland, CA
                      Gerald Fleming 4* #3 C #77 OVR Arlington TX
Harold Dillard 4* #30 SG #95 OVR Los Angeles, CA

We had a 3* SF who was 93% committed to coming here and that's just not committed enough. So we'll carry over one scholarship and we'll have 4 this year.

                      Tovarich: Questions?

Reporter: Is that a 9-game road trip coach?

Tovarich: 10 since we play 2 in that tournament.

Reporter: And another 6 game road trip?

Tovarich: Yeah, that one's rather circuitous.

Reporter: And 4 of the pre-season top 18?

                      Tovarich: Yep.

                      Reporter: What about the assistants?

Tovarich: I kept one. I fired one. Don't ask which. I don't know.

                      Reporter: What's the recruiting goal?

Tovarich: We need a SF for sure. Other than that, I think we're finally at the point in the program where I can just go for whoever the best talent I can get is regardless of position. A SG is probably wise. Another PG is likely needed.

Reporter: You seem to push some players out every year. Who will it be this year?

Tovarich: Probably Crawford. He started, and now he won't, so he's going to be upset about that. But the whole country let some 5* PG go without a single offer for some reason. I'm not going to pass on that.

Reporter: Is the tournament achievable with this schedule you put together?

Tovarich: This is a hard schedule. I'm hoping it gives us the ability to absorb 5-6 losses and still get in. We'll see how it goes. I'm still trying to figure out what the committee wants. Arizona was 22-11 and got a 3 seed in the NIT while 10 loss Tulane was put in. So I don't really know what you're supposed to do. Only Joe Lunardi can decipher these things.

Reporter: So another FR PG and a FR C?

Tovarich: Yeah, 3rd year in a row. The talent keeps improving, so that's the result. Who needs team unity?

Fleming and Hale look like really good additions. Hopefully Fleming can score in the paint this season.

Disappointing how many good players just didn't get recruited by anyone. It's bizarre, though PG is just a passer for me. I can't get them many shots. I just hope Fleming can get some rebounds...

Tovarich: I can only laugh at that. That's wild. We played about as good as you can. They played about as badly as you can. It's rare for those two things to happen simultaneously, but it did. We even ran a little clock there to keep that from being worse.

Reporter: Are you excited about how good this team can be coach?

Tovarich: It's just one game AND it's just one game against Samford. Let's not get carried away yet. I'd rather have saved that for one our elite opponents like Connecticut or Oregon. They won't turn the ball over 15 times and be -10 in rebounds or shoot 31% though. A lot of things just came together today.

Reporter: How do you assess the freshman?

Tovarich: Let's hold judgement. It was a real anomaly of a game that we may never see again. I'll wait until someone punches us in the mouth and see how we respond.

Tovarich: Still trying not to get too excited. It wasn't one of our stronger opponents this season. We'll know more next game and the field coming for the Great Alaska Shootout looks strong. We'll also need to go play on the road some first. But things are looking hopeful.

Reporter: Is 10 rebounds by Fleming an indication that rebounding is going to improve?

Tovarich: Let's wait and see how he does against a bigger team. We outsized South Dakota State significantly. All the big guys did well. They'll get someone their own size soon. The ups and downs of the low team unity is going to rear its ugly head somewhere and rebounding is where it always pokes out first.

Reporter: The bench only has 19 minutes in 2 blowouts. Are you favoring the starters more?

Tovarich: Since we have a couple FR starting, I want them getting as many minutes as possible. When things are going badly, we'll rely a little more on the people we know more about. In the mean time, I need to know more about the FR as fast as I can. I sacrificed this season for Pippen so we'll have him when Farley graduates and he's our best 3-point shooter. We still have Luz on the bench who shoots 3's well. But the bench is going to be more about getting it down to the bigs. Dillard's not going to be much of a threat from out there.
