      2009 Post Season

      Wildcard Week

      Ravens 35
      Bengals 21

      Buccaneers 23
      Packers 20

      Jaguars 24
      Broncos 17

      Eagles 35
      49ers 38

      Divisonal Week

      Ravens 14
      Patriots 35

      Jaguars 13
      Colts 31

      49ers 24
      Cowboys 34

      Buccaneers
      Panthers

Things start out bad when it becomes readily apparent that passing vs. the Buccaneers is going to be nearly impossible. Can the Panthers who have made their living throwing the ball, beat a team on the ground?

A staunch defensive effort keeps the Buccaneers from scoring in the 1st quarter, but Carolina can't get anything going either. An INT by QB Delhomme and a fumble by HB McGahee are hurting the Panthers.

Buccaneers 0 Panthers 0 going into the 2nd quarter.

A goal line stand forces the Bucs to kick a 23yd FG. Tampa is up by 3. The Panthers respond by marching down the field using HB McGahee, HB Randolph and FB Stewart. Stewart gives Carolina the lead when he goes in on a pitch play. Tampa 3 Carolina 7. It looks like the Panthers will go into the half with the lead, when a fumble gives Tampa Bay another opportunity. The Bucs get to the 1 yd line, but Carolina's defense stiffens and forces them to take the FG.

TB 6 CAR 7 at the half

Neither team can score in the third quarter.

TB 6 CAR 7 going into the 4th

The Panthers move down the field and HB B. Randolph takes it in on a counter play. TB 6 CAR 14. K/P Jason Baker is injured on the following kickoff...and the Panthers don't have another kicker on their roster...QB Delhomme assumes the duty of K. The Panthers hold the Bucs and get the ball back with 9 minutes to go. Then tragedy strikes. QB Delhomme throws a pick and LB Cato June takes it all the way back for a TD. After the 2pt conversion the game is tied. TB 14 CAR 14.

HC Joslin rallies his guys and moves them down the field on the ground, eating up yards and seconds. HB B. Randolph takes it in fromo 1yd out. HC Joslin is without a kicker so he calls for the 2pt conversion and fails. TB 14 CAR 20. QB Jake Delhomme kicks off and it is ugly...it goes maybe 15yds...fortunately a TB's Dan Buening just falls on it...if they had a guy who could return it up there it would of been even uglier.

Less than 3 minutes to go, Tampa is down by 6 and they have 44yards to go to paydirt. HC Joslin is sending blitzers. DE Julius Peppers gets to QB Griese and as he spins him to the ground the ball comes free. DT M. Kemoeatu has it and he's bumbling, stumbling down the field. He doesn't get far, but it is Carolina's ball. Wait! The Bucs challenge the play. The refs rule that Griese was down, no fumble. The disappointed Panthers go back to playing D. CB Ken Lucas knocks down the 2nd down pass. QB Griese is sacked by DE Caraun Lawrence on 3rd down. After a false start penalty it is 4th and 21, and the Bucs have to go for it. The pass by QB Griese is tipped, but WR I. Hilliard gets it...but he's pulled down a yard short of the conversion. Turnover on Downs. HC Joslin isn't taking any risks with less than 2 minutes remaining. With the Bucs having all their timeouts and the Panthers not having a kicker, Carolina is going to need at least one first down, maybe two to seal the win.

HC Joslin subs in HB B. Randolph who hasn't fumbled the ball all season and sends him up the middle. Three runs and two of TB's timeouts and the Panthers have their first down. Less than a minute to go. HB B. Randolph gets another 1st, but the clock stops due to an injury. On the next play HB B. Randolph fumbles the ball! DT Chris Hovan recovers it and goes 60+ yards, without anyone pursuing him for the TD. The PAT gives TB a 1 pt. lead with 19 seconds remaining.

TB kicks off to the Panthers and WR Steve Smith goes 43yds with it, giving Carolina a chance. The Panthers manage a first down, but the clock it ticking. Another first down puts them in FG range...if they had a kicker, but they don't. QB Jake Delhomme throws long and WR Arquan McGlockton has it in the back of the endzone! Refs rule he was out of bounds when he made the catch, no TD. Bucs Win!

A heartbreaker! Man I hate the Buccaneers in this game!

      TB 21 CAR 20

      Conference Week

      Colts 34
      Patriots 20
      Manning out throws Brady.

      Buccaneers 24
      Cowboys 27
Tampa Bay scored 2 TDs in the 4th to tie the game, but Dallas moved downfield and kicked a last minute FG to win it.

      Super Bowl

      Colts 42
      Cowboys 20
Peyton Manning won't be denied, throwing for 390yds and 6 TDs (85% completion rate to boot)

                Notable departures:

HB Willis McGahee, the Panthers used the Franchise tag on him with plans on trading him, but struggled to find someone interested in the oft injured diva...finally a deal was struck with the Bears for a 2012 2nd round pick.

4th round pick FS Adam Griffin was cut in training camp, the coaching staff noted a lack of potential for the cut.

SS Daniel Manning was cut in training camp after being unable to beat out SS Simons or Green. SS Manning was acquired from the Bears in a 2008 trade and started at both FS and SS. He was coming off a pro bowl season.

ROLB Na'il Diggs was cut, Diggs hadn't played in a regular season game since 2008. However, in 2008 he did earn a trip to the pro bowl.

                  Re: HC 09 Dynasty

                  Preseason- simmed

                  Panthers go undefeated

                  Regular Season - simmed

                  Week 1
                  Panthers 20
                  Packers 10
Backup QB Dexter Dudley got the start with QB Jake Delhome out, and Dudley struggled earning a pitiful QB Rating of 55.2. Fortunately HB Mike Flowers was there amassing 101yds on the ground allowing the Panthers to outlast the Packers. Two interceptions by rookie MLB2 W. Mays were the key to this victory.

                  Week 2
                  Panthers 49
                  Browns 42
QB Jake Delhomme returned with a bang putting up 378yds and 5 TDs. Carolina needed every bit of it, as Browns QB Derek Anderson scorced the rookies in the secondary for 406yds and 5TDs of his own. In the end, Carolina had the better run game (HB Mike Flowers 17 for 131yds 2 TDs) and that is what allowed them to hold off the Browns.

                  Week 3
                  Panthers 35
                  Falcons 14
Another good game for HB Mike Flowers who just misses the 100yd mark, but gets 2 TDs. The Panthers defense has a better day and contains rookie QB DaQuan Scott pretty well.

                  Week 4
                  Ravens 3
                  Panthers 34
The story in this game is one of defense. The Panthers defense dominated while the Ravens defense collapsed. Rookie HB's Mike Flowers and Drew Walsh put up 130yds and 3 TDs on the normally stout Ravens run defense. The Panthers defense would rack up 5 sacks and 2 INTs while holding the Ravens to 164yds of total offense (40 rush, 124 pass).

                  Week 5
                  Panthers 16
                  Buccaneers 13
This one was a nail biter folks. The Buccaneers victimized QB Jake Delhomme intercepting him 6 times! Fortunately the Panthers defense didn't let opposing QB Billy Volek kill them (starter Brian Griese was injured). Tampa Bay gets a last minute FG to send it into overtime. In the end, it comes down the a rookie kicker in overtimes. K Landon Rich nails a 31yd to win the game.

                  Week 6
                  Rams 17
                  Panthers 45
QB Jake Delhomme gets injured and has to leave the game, but not before putting up 359yds and 3 TDs. HB Mike Flowers adds 208yds of all purpose offense and 3 TDs. Former Lion WR Roy Williams catches 7 balls for 134yds and 2 TDs.

                  Week 7
                  Panthers 40
                  Bengals 17
QB J. Delhomme was listed as questionable for this one, but he starts and shines addiing 369yds and 3 TDs to his already stellar resume. HB Mike Flowers adds 99yds on the ground and 2 TDs. That's right folks, Carolina has a legitimate ground game. DE Caraun Lawrence again goes without a sack...what has happened to this guy? He can't ever seem to get to the QB anymore.

                  Week 8
                  Cowboys 21
                  Panthers 34
Dallas QB Tony Romo has a horrible day completing on 50% of his passes and throwing 2 INTs. The Deadly Duo is back for at least one game with DE Julius Peppers getting 4 sacks and DE Caraun Lawrence adding 2 more.

                  Week 9 Bye Week

                  Week 10
                  Saints 7
                  Panthers 84
The Saints defense didn't show up for this one. Backup QB Dexter Dudley ripped them for 406yds and 6 TDs. QB3 Steve Dudley added another TD before being knocked out of the game. rookie HB Dexter Walsh and Mike Flowers combined for 145yd and 4 TDs on the ground. DE's Peppers , Bake and Lawrence had 2, 2, and 1 sacks respectively. MLB Jon Beason, OLB Thomas Davis, MLB W. Mays and CB B. Gordon all had interceptions as well.

                  Week 11
                  Panthers 45
                  Cardinals 17
QB Jake Delhomme returns for a half before being injured again. HB Mike Flowers and HB Dexter Walsh both put up 2 TDs. CB Demetrius Grimes has an INT.

                  Week 12
                  Panthers 48
                  Seahawks 21
QB Jake Delhomme hobbles onto the field and shreds the Seahawks for 375yds and 4 TDs. HB Mike Flowers puts up 183 all purpose yards and 3 TDs. DE Julius Peppers adds 2 sacks.

                  Week 13
                  Steelers 10
                  Panthers 41
QB Dexter Dudley gets the start for the ailing Delhomme and puts up great numbers (370yds, 3 TDs). QB Ben Roethlisberger doesn't (11/22 for 109yds and 2 INTs). Once again HB Mike Flowers is a big factor in the game accounting for 3 scores.

                  Week 14
                  Buccaneers 13
                  Panthers 33
Backup QB Dexter Dudley is mistake free as he puts up 334yd and a TD on the Buccaneers normally stingy pass defense. QB Dudley sets up HB Mike Flowers for 2 short scores. Interceptions by SS2 Rory Green and MLB2 W. Mays insures the Buccaneers can't get back into this one.

                  Week 15
                  Panthers 49
                  Saints 17
QB Dexter Dudley puts up 303yds and 4 TDs before turning the game over to QB 3 Steve Dudley, who adds another 45yds and a TD. CB/PR Demetrius Grimes returns a punt 78yds for a TD.

                  Week 16
                  49ers 17
                  Panthers 31
QB Jake Delhomme returns for this one, but struggles throwing 2 INTs. It doesn't matter as SF QB Kerry Collins has a similiarly bad day and the 49ers can't get any points until the 2nd half, and by then it is too late.

                  Week 17
                  Falcons 7
                  Panthers 31
HB Mike Flowers runs for 112yds after QB Jake Delhomme puts this one out of reach with 3 early TDs. DE Julius Peppers, DT Colton Porter, DE Caraun Lawrence, and DE Tony Bake all sack Falcons QB DaQuan Scott.

The Panthers go undefeated in the regular season again and earn a bye and homefield advantage in the playoffs.

QB Jake Delhomme also announced he will be retiring at the end of the season.

                        Buccaneers
                        Panthers

Have I mentioned I hate the Buccaneers?

The Buccaneers win the toss and score on their first offensive play when Michael Turner takes a pitch, slips a tackle and goes 76yds.

                        TB 7 CAR 0

Panthers backup QB Dexter Dudly fumbles the snap and the Buccaneers recover. Less than a minute later HB Michael Turner adds his second TD.

                        TB 14 CAR 0

The Panthers finally get on the board with a HB Mike Flowers 9yd run.

TB 14 CAR 7 going into the 2nd quarter.

The Panthers defense comes up with a stop and then HB Mike Flowers turns a run up the middle into 70yds and a TD. The game is tied and Carolina looks like they have a chance.

                        TB 14 CAR 14

Tampa Bay takes the lead again as Carolina is unable to stop QB Brian Griese. Griese finds WR Jerome Simpson in the back of the endzone for a 13yd TD strike.

TB 21 CAR 14 with less than 2 minutes in the half.

The Panthers manage a few clutch passes to move the ball into scoring range, but can't get a first down and with less than 5 seconds on the clock, send out K Landen Rich for the 33yd FG.

TB 21 CAR 17 at the half.

The third quarter is a defensive struggle with neither team being able to do much offensively. The Panthers almost had a score when DE Julius Peppers stripped the ball and SS Renardo Simons recovered the fumble and ran it in for a score, but there was a flag. The refs say Peppers grabbed the facemask. Tampa keeps the ball.

TB 21 CAR 17 going into the final quarter of play.

Carolina is moving the ball efficiently on the ground, eating up the clock. They get to the 10yd line when HB Mike Flowers fumbles the ball. Tampa's ball with 5:26 remaining. MLB Jon Beason and ROLB Chief Sanders step up their game to tackle Tampa HB Michael Turner for losses and then sack Tampa QB Brian Griese. The Panthers get the ball back with just over 4 minutes remaining and 90yds to go. QB Dexter Dudley adds a crucial 3rd down conversion to keep the Panthers hopes alive. HB Mike Flowers redeems himself with a 44yd TD run on the counter play.

TB 21 CAR 24 with less than 3 minutes remaining.

The Panthers' defense comes up big, forcing Tampa to try for the 4th down converision needing 21yds to get it. QB Griese drops back, MLB Jon Beason dives for him, Griese sidesteps and throws, TE Kellen Winslow goes up for it, he has it, but ROLB Chief Sanders nails him in the air and Winslow can't hold on...incomplete...turnover on downs.

The Tampa Defense comes up big and forces a 4th and inches with 1:05 remaining. If the Panthers get the conversion they can run out the clock, if they don't Tampa gets the ball with 60yds to go...if they kick Tampa gets the ball with 80yds to go. HC Joslin tries the sneak. OLB Donnie Edwards makes the stop. Tampa ball.

MLB Jon Beason tackles QB Brian Griese for a sack. QB Griese spikes the ball to stop the clock. Then drops back and completes the throw to TE Alge Crumpler. They are still short of the first down and have to go for it on 4th down. CB Demetrius Grimes deflects the ball. Turnover on Downs.

Carolina's QB takes a knee twice to end the game.

                        TB 21 CAR 24

Carolina finally beats the Buccaneers in the playoffs and earns a trip to the Super Bowl where they will battle the Colts.

Oddly enough both Carolina QB Jake Delhomme and Colts QB Peyton Manning have told ESPN they will retire after the Super Bowl.

                          Super Bowl

                          Colts vs. Panthers

The Panthers get on the board first when QB Jake Delhomme finds a wide open HB Mike Flowers on a wheel route. HB Flowers goes 23yds for the score.

                          CAR 7 IND 0

The Colts respond with an efficient drive that puts HB J. Addai in the endzone on a 1yd dive.

                          CAR 7 IND 7

In the 2nd quarter QB Jake Delhomme throws 2 INTs and gets knocked out of the game. QB Peyton Manning takes advantage of the 2nd INT and adds another score when he finds WR Reggie Wayne for a 15yd TD strike.

                          CAR 7 IND 14

The Panthers move the down the field and score on a 4yd run by HB Mike Flowers.

CAR 14 IND 14 at the half

Carolina pulls ahead with two scores by FB Dan Krieder. Krieder barrels he way through the middle of the line for 2 TDs.

                          CAR 28 IND 14

QB Peyton Manning narrows the gap when he finds TE Dallas Clark for a 17yd TD.

CAR 28 IND 21 at the end of the 3rd

An interception by Peyton Manning leads to the first score of the 4th quarter. Backup QB Dexter Dudley finds HB Mike Flowers open in the flat for a 13yd score.

                          CAR 35 IND 21

The Panthers secondary steps it up and forces a three and out. The Colts opt to not try for the 4th down conversion. This proves to be a poor choice as the Panthers eat away at the remaining time. QB Dexter Dudley adds his second score when he finds WR Steve Smith streaking toward the endzone.

                          CAR 42 IND 21

With under two minutes remaining and the Colts down by 3 scores it looks bad. The Carolina secondary allows a few short passes, but in the end they get the stop and time runs out.

                          Carolina Wins the Super Bowl!

After the game Carolina QB Jake Delhomme confirmed that he would be retiring. Colts QB Peyton Manning hedged, saying "I've definitely thought about it, but I don't know if I wan't to go out on a loss."

                            Around the League

HC Joslin keeps his entire staff intact for another run next year.

Al Davis fires HC Bruce DeHaven and replaces him with the only man who would take the job, Alex Gibbs who was fired as the Falcons OC.

Suprisingly General Sanders keeps his job with the Jets despite going 2-14 in his inaugral seaon. Sanders' vaunted Army Run Offense just doesn't work in the NFL. Let's face it, when an offense built around running the ball gains less than 1000yds in a season, there is something wrong.
