Hart runs wild as UM takes the fight out of the Irish

ANN ARBOR, MI--If you're going to have a career game, you might as well do it against one of your archrivals.

Michigan HB Mike Hart did just that, carrying the ball a bruising 40 times for a career-high 305 yards (a 7.6 average), and he scored his 5th and 6th touchdowns of the young season. Freshman Kevin Grady was awesome as well, carrying only 7 times but scoring a TD while gaining 87 yards.

Passing-wise, Chad Henne had a light day obviously, going 8-17 for 81 yards. He was intercepted once, and it produced Notre Dame's first touchdown.

Brady Quinn was 5-10 passing for Notre Dame for 103 yards and 2 INTs (the first one coming on his first pass 8 seconds into the game and was returned for a score). He left the game in the second quarter with an elbow injury. Replacement Darrin Bragg was 5-9 for 42 yards. Darius Walker carried 12 times for 98 yards and a very late 70 yard touchdown. Rhema McKnight caught three passes for 64 yards.

DE Jeremy Van Alstyne had 7 tackles and a sack to lead Michigan, followed by 6 from Ryan Mundy, and 5 from Prescott Burgess (who also had a sack) and David Harris. LaMarr Woodley had a pair of sacks, and the interceptions were by Chris Graham and Grant Mason (who scored on his).

OLB Brandon Hoyte led the Irish with 10 tackles. SS Freddir Parish IV has 8 tackles, and INT return for a TD and a recovered umble. Abdel Banda, Tom Zbikowski, and Corey Mays each had 7 tackles for ND.

The Wolverines host their second MAC opponent next week, taking on the Eastern Michigan Eagles.

Wolverines ruthless in 65-10 drubbing of EMU; pivotal game in Wisconsin next

ANN ARBOR, MI--Is this a sign of things changing at Michigan?

Rather than take the ultra-conservative route and pound the ball for the second half, the Wolverines DID put their second stringers in--but still ran the score up, burying Eastern Michigan, 65-10.

Quarterback Chad Henne excelled in the passing game, going 17-27 for 223 yards, throwing 3 TDs and no interceptions. Backup Matt Gutierrez was 6-14 for 68 yards for a TD and INT. Mike Hart saw a limited load, not taking a single carry in the 2nd half, accumulating only six carries, for 79 yards and a 54 yard TD. He led UM in receptions with 6 for 33 yards and a TD. Kevin Grady actually led UM's rushing game with 14 carries for 88 yards and a TD. Grady also caught 2 passes for 27 yards. Michigan's receiving was evenly spread out, with Jason Avant catching 4 passes, Adrian Arrington and Steve Breaston 3 each, Tim Massaquoi 2, and Tyler Ecker, Mario Manningham and Carl Tabb one each. Manningham, Massaquoi, Hart and Breaston all caught a TD, and Breaston scored two more on punt returns.

Matt Bohnet was hounded by UM's defense all day, going 9-24 for 120 yards, and was intercepted twice. RB Anthony Sherrell carried the ball 20 times for only 58 yards. Eric Deslauriers caught 4 passes for 100 yards.

Prescott Burgess had 8 tackles and a sack for Michigan, and Pierre Woods surprised many with 8 tackles himself in limited time. He may actually start next week. Pat Massey had the other sack for Michigan. Leon Hall and Grant Mason each had an INT. Mason also had a fumble recovery.

Jereme Perry was excellent for EMU, registering 10 tackles along with a sack and an interception. CB Victor Alejo had 8 tackles.

The Wolverines have finally finished their non-conference schedule unscathed, but face a daunting task in their conference opener: A night game at rowdy Camp-Randall vs. Wisconsin.

Wolverines fight off the crowd and turnovers to stun Wisconsin

MADISON, WI--With Chad Henne benched due to bad play, the Wolverines looked to senior leadership for a miracle.

                Matt Gutierrez delivered.

The senior stepped in for the struggling sophomore and led the Wolverines to a 17-0 fourth quarter, concluding with a 57 yard bomb from the heavens that landed in Steve Breaston's hands with 1:31 left, bringing Michigan all the way back from 20-6 and 23-13 deficits to leave Wisconsin stunned, 30-23.

Henne was obviously rattled by the rabid Camp Randall crowd, as he went 4-12 for 53 yards and 3 interceptions. Gutierrez took over in the second half and was a bit better, going 15-31 for 233 yards with an INT, but the winning TD made up for it. Mike Hart also played a huge role, carrying the ball 17 times for 130 yards and a pair of scores. Freshman Kevin Grady added 70 yards on 10 carries. Breaston's only catch was the TD as Jason Avant was the #1 man, catching seven passes for 106 yards.

John Stocco was 12-29 for Wisconsin for 184 yards and a pair of TDs, but his fourth quarter INT led to the tying TD by Hart. Brian Calhoun ripped through the UM defense in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, concluding with 17 carries for 92 yards. TE Owen Daniels had 79 yards and a TD on 4 catches. Brandon Williams had Wisconsin's other TD.

Pierre Woods led UM with 6 tackles and a sack, followed by 5 from David Harris and 4 each from Prescott Burgess, Jamar Adams, Gabe Watson and Leon Hall. Burgess added two sacks, and Watson and LaMarr Woodley each had one. Adams had the huge INT, proving coach Lloyd Carr right when he started him last second over Brandent Englemon.

As for the Badgets, Dontez Sanders was everywhere, as he had 10 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 pass deflections, an interception and a forced fumble. OLB Mark Zalewski had 9 tackles and a sack, and Roderick Rogers also had 9 tackles. LaMarr Watkins had Wisconsin's 4th sack. CB Levonne Rowan was the reason Steve Breaston had only one catch, as he picked off three passes. He was beaten on the winning TD though.

As for the QB situation, Lloyd Carr has insisted that he believes in Chad Henne, and he will be thrown back into the fire next week, with the Michigan State Spartans starving for revenge in East Lansing.

Wolverines overcome slow start to win 4th straight over Spartans

EAST LANSING, MI--Chad Henne had another tough game on the road with a hostile crowd.

Mike Hart was injured and the Michigan running game went down with him.

But Steve Breaston's punt return for a score in the third quarter turned the tides, turning a 14-13 deficit into a 34-14 win for the Maize and Blue.

The bad: Henne was a mediocre 19-37 and threw three interceptions for the second straight game. The good: He threw for 359 yards and 3 TDs. Hart had 62 yards on ten carries carries before going down with a thigh injury. He should play next week, but may not start. The Wolverines' receivers went crazy. Jason Avant caught 7 passes for 119 yards and a TD. Steve Breaston caught 6 for 85 and a TD, and Mario Manningham had only TWO catches for 112 yards and a 90 yard TD in the second quarter.

Drew Stanton tried his best, but finished 15-32 for 189 yards and 2 interceptions. He was "contained" to 27 yards rushing, but only because the Wolverines had four sacks. Jehuu Caulcrick carried the ball 23 times for 111 yards and 2 TDs, but fumbled the ball four times. Kyle Brown caught four passes for 98 yards.

On defense for Michigan, Pierre Woods had another monster game with 10 tackles, a sack and a pair of forced fumbles. Prescott Burgess had 7 tackles and he recovered one of the fumbles Woods forced. DE LaMarr Woodley had a pair of sacks, and Jeremy Van Alstyne had one. MLB David Harris and SS Jamar Adams each had an interception.

David Harron, Jr. was amazing for the Spartans, registering 8 tackles and THREE sacks. For the second straight game, a defensive player had 3 INTs vs. Michigan State, this time the culprit being former RB Jaren Hayes, who also had 6 tackles. OLB Eric Smith had 5 tackles and a sack, and DE Michael Bazemore had 4 and a sack.

The Wolverines return home next week for the conference home opener at the Big House against their so-called "rivals", the Minnesota Golden Gophers.

I bet ND or OSU will beat you though.
