Wolverines show amazing poise, put Gophers through hell for 3rd straight year

ANN ARBOR, MI--Despite getting taken to school all day, it was Michigan's defense that sparked them to victory.

With Minnesota leading 24-14 early in the fourth quarter, the Gophers were driving for the nail in the coffin TD when SS Jamar Adams made a leaping interception in the endzone to keep hope alive.

The Wolverines pounded the ball on their ensuing drive, which concluded with Chad Henne throwing a 35 yard touchdown to TE Tim Massaquoi.

After Minnesota MISSED a field goal, the Wolverines pounded the ball on the ground again, and freshman Kevin Grady scored from 3 yards out with 2:01 left. Pierre Woods intercepted Bryan Cupito in the final minute to preserve the thrilling 28-24 victory, their 3rd straight 4th quarter comeback victory over the Gophers in as many years.

Henne finished 17-31 for 238 yards and a TD, but he did throw 2 INTs. He also scored twice on the ground. Grady carried the ball 12 times for 110 yards and a TD, and Mike Hart had 11 carries for 104 yards. Mario Manningham continued his impressive freshman campaign with 5 catches for 67 yards.

Cupito finished 15-26 for 187 yards with a TD and 2 INTs for the Gophers, but it was all about Laurence Maroney, who went NUTS. He ran wild all over Michigan's D, carrying the ball 38 times for 215 yards and a TD.

Pierre Woods continued to dominate on D with 10 tackles, an INT and a forced fumble. Prescott Burgess added 8 tackles, and Pat Massey had 7 tackles and 2 sacks. Grant Mason had 6 tackles, a forced fumble and 2 pass breakups.

For Minnesota, John Shevlin had 7 tackles and a sack. Brandon Owens also had 7 tackles, along with an INT, and Leland Jones had 5 tackles, a sack, and an interception.

The Wolverines stay home next week, taking on the defensively-stout Penn State Nittany Lions at the Big House.

Wolverines show no class in senseless beatdown of Penn State

ANN ARBOR, MI--Normally when Michigan faces an inferior opponent, they tend to let up, and the final score is closer than the game really was.

This time the Wolverines were uncharacteristically classless, passing late in the game and leaving the first team in on offense, blowing Penn State away, 58-28.

Chad Henne had a great day, throwing only one interception while going 23-44 for 349 yards and a Michigan-record 5 passing TDs. Kevin Grady had 115 yards on only 11 carries, and Mike Hart had 13 carries for 101 yards. Hart added 8 receptions for 92 yards. Jason Avant was great as well, catching 6 passes for 72 yards and 3 TDs. Mario Manningham had 5 receptions for 104 yards, and TE Tim Massaquoi had three catches for 67 yards and a score.

Michael Robinson was 8-18 for Penn State for 83 yards with 2 TDs and 2 INTs, but Penn State's running game was monstrous, as Robinson gave Michigan fans a haunting reminder of the Rose Bowl, carrying the ball 14 times for 141 yards and a TD. Tony Hunt added 124 yards on 15 carries, FB Brandon Snow had 40 on 4 carries, and Austin Scott had an 80 yard TD late in the game.

Pierre Woods continued to surprise the Michigan faithful as his emergence from the dog house appeared to reach full circle, as he had 9 tackles, a forced fumble and a recovered fumble. With Prescott Burgess suspended for the first half due to minor discipline issues, Shawn Crable stepped in with 6 tackles. The Michigan coaches have expressed interest in playing Crable, Woods and Burgess together, but one of them would have to move to MLB.

LaMarr Woodley added two sacks for Michigan, and Gabe Watson and Alan Branch each had one. David Harris and Grant Mason each had an INT, with Mason taking his back for a score.

For PSU, Tim Shaw had 14 tackles. Calvin Lowry had 6 tackles and an INT, and Matthew Rice had a pair of sacks.

One of the biggest tests of this Michigan team comes next week in Iowa City, as the Wolverines take on the Hawkeyes, a team many of picked to win the Big Ten title.

                Iowa City, IA
                October 22nd, 2005

Iowa's magic man finds one more miracle to stun Michigan in all-time classic

IOWA CITY, IA--The last view of the Michigan locker room before it was closed to the public was the same as it was 30 minutes earlier, when it was opened to the public.

Towels over heads. Tears of shame and disbelief. Little to no conversation. Blank stares. Even first year coach Brian Kudron was stoic, standing in the middle of the locker room, his hands in his pockets, his hair disheveled.

The Wolverines came out of the gates firing at Kinnick Stadium against #8 Iowa, jumping out to a huge 23-2 halftime lead.

And what followed will go down as perhaps the greatest shame in the history of Michigan football.

After a FG to make it 23-5, Michigan went 3 and out. Iowa WR/PR Ed Hinkel returned the punt 64 yards for a score. 23-12.

Another FG a couple minutes later made it 23-15. The Iowa defense swarmed, and forced a Chad Henne interception. After a 29 yard pass, Iowa pounded it in but missed the two point conversion, leaving Michigan up 23-21.

But the defense of the Hawkeyes was invigorated, and forced a fast 3 and out. Two more long pass plays gave Iowa first and goal, and on 2nd and goal, Tate found Hinkel in the endzone with no time left on the 3rd quarter clock. Again the two point try failed, but a 25-0 3rd quarter gave Iowa a 27-23 lead after 3.

Garrett Rivas hit his 3rd FG of the day midway through the 4th, bringing UM to 27-26 with 4:02 left. Iowa drove deep, but the Michigan defense stiffened, and Kyle Schlicher kicked a 24 yard FG with only 2:17 left to extend the lead to 30-26.

Michigan took a risk, relying on their ground game late. It paid off, as Kevin Grady and Mike Hart drove into the teeth of the Iowa defense, it succeeded. Hart scored from 4 yards out with only 12 seconds left, giving Michigan an apparent 33-30 win.

But Tate refused to die, dodging a LaMarr Woodley sack on 1st down from his 20 and completed a 56 yard pass to James Townsend who went down and called timeout with TWO seconds left. Undaunted by the 20 MPH wind blowing in his face, Schlicher tied the game as time expired, sending Kinnick Stadium into delirium.

Michigan went on defense first and held, forcing another Schlicher FG to put Iowa in front, 36-33. On Michigan's possession, it came down to 4th and 1, and Kudron NEARLY sent the offense out, but opted for Rivas, who easily tied the game at 36.

The same situation appeared in the next overtime, this time 4th and inches for UM. This time Kudron DID send the offense out. Fearing a fumble if he tried QB Sneak, Kudron called FB Dive to Obi Oluigbo. On his first carry of the season, the Junior APPEARED to get the first down (although that's disputed)...and he was stripped of the ball, and the Hawkeyes recovered.

With the crowd rocking, the Hawkeyes offense took the field with a swagger, and Michigan's defense was finished. On the first play, Tate coolly avoided the blitz, hit WR Calvin Davis, who got behind Leon Hall, dodged Hall's dive, juked Ryan Mundy and cruised into the endzone as the Iowa crowd poured onto the field in an unbelievable celebration.

Double Overtime: Iowa 42, Michigan 36.

Chad Henne started out 10/11 for Michigan, but finished 7/29 to finish the game 17/40 for 225 yards, 2 TDs and an INT. Hart was his usual self, carrying 24 times for 153 yards and a TD, while Grady had 9 carries for 47 yards. Mario Manningham caught 5 passes for 48 yards and a TD, while Jason Avant had 4 catches for 76 yards and a score.

For Iowa, the hero Tate was 27/55 for 385 yards and 2 TDs, with no INTs. HB Marques Simmons carried only 7 times, gaining 68 yards and scoring a TD. Hinkel finished with 7 receptions for 111 yards and a TD, TE Scott Chandler had 6 for 47, Clinton Solomon had 3 for 98, and James Townsend had 2 for 80.

Pierre Woods once again was beastly for UM on defense with 9 tackles, 2 forced fumbles and a sack. Woodley, Prescott Burgess and Alan Branch each had a sack.

For Iowa, Chad Greenway was everywhere. He had 11 tackles, a forced fumble, and THREE sacks. Marcus Paschal added 10 tackles, and Abdul Hodge had 8 and a forced fumble. Edmond Miles had 7 and a sack, along with the fumble recovery that led to the win for the Hawkeyes. Ma'Quan Dawkins had 6 tackles and an INT.

With their Rose Bowl hopes all but gone now, the Wolverines must pick up the pieces from this heartbreaking defeat and prepare for Northwestern next week in Evanston.

Michigan's defense pulverizes Northwestern in 65-16 beatdown

EVANSTON, IL--Eager to put the painful memories of the Iowa loss behind them, the Wolverines' defense vented all their frustrations on Northwestern QBs Brett Basanez and C.J. Bacher.

The defense forced 6 turnovers and had 8 sacks, and the offense had a light day as the Wolverines destroyed lowly Northwestern, 65-16 in the final road game of the year for Michigan.

It would have been worse if Chad Henne had not have thrown 2 INTs deep in NW territory. He was 9-16 passing for 116 yards and a TD. Kevin Grady and Mike Hart each scored a TD, with Grady gaining 81 yards on 16 carries, and Hart getting 77 on 13. Steve Breaston caught 3 passes for 50 yards and a TD.

Basanez was 8-25 for 113 yards and 4 INTs and 4 sacks before getting pulled for Bacher, who was 4-9 for 20 yards with one INT and 4 more sacks. Basanez started the game with a 48 yard run...and finished with 21 yards on 8 carries. Terrell Jordan had 52 yards and two TDs on only 13 carries.

Prescott Burgess was a BEAST for Michigan's defense, with 10 tackles, 3 sacks, and an interception. LaMarr Woodley added 2 sacks and a touchdown on a fumble recovery. Will Johnson, Tim Jamison and Gabe Watson each had one sack. Grant Mason is making a SERIOUS surprise run at the Thorpe Award as he had 2 interceptions, returning one for yet another TD. Willis Barringer and Leon Hall had UM's other two INTs.

Adam Kadela led NW with 8 tackles, and Barry Cofield, Tim McGarigle and Reggie McPherson each had 5. Cory Dious had NW's only sack, and Jeff Backes and Marquice Cole each had an INT.

Michigan is off next week before their final tuneup game for Ohio State, a home tilt with Indiana.
