              Rose Bowl Preview
              Volume 1, Issue 22

Wolverines' defense seeks redemption while Texas strives to remain forever Young

Memories of last year's Rose Bowl still haunt UM; Wolverines and Longhorns gear up for national showdown

PASADENA, CA--LaMarr Woodley still talks about it. Prescott Burgess still talks about it. Gabe Watson still talks about it.

The Michigan defense suffered through hell in last year's Rose Bowl, as Vince Young made people believe he was coated in vaseline, slipping around and through the UM defense for 192 rushing yards and four touchdowns on the ground, leading Texas to a come from behind 38-37 win.

This time around, the stakes are infinitely bigger. The Longhorns finally got past their nemesis Oklahoma this year, and are an unblemished 12-0, finally champions of the Big 12 for the first time since 1996. The Wolverines' only loss was the double overtime 42-36 classic loss to the Hawkeyes in Iowa City, and they are flying high after the legendary 37-34 OT win over Ohio State, which delivered a 3rd straight Big Ten title and 3rd straight Rose Bowl berth for the Maize and Blue.

The Michigan defense has seen its shares of ups and downs this year, but LaMarr Woodley and Pierre Woods have excelled, winning the highest awards for their respective positions. CB Grant Mason was a narrow runner up to the Thorpe Award.

And yet their shame of last year's embarrasing performance remains on their minds.

"It was the low point of my career. All I see when I close my eyes sometimes, is him (Young) zig zagging around us, and then I see that scoreboard, and I think: We should've won," Woodley explained in an interview on Rose Bowl media day.

"It was doubly hard for me, because I was stuck on the bench watching, and I like to think I could've made a difference," said Woods, who was hampered with injuries and poor play last year, but bounced back this year to win the Butkus and Bednarik Awards.

But Vince Young has improved his passing this year, and has become much more of a pockey quarterback, throwing 36 touchdowns this year, while only running for three. He has hinted though, that he will watch the tape of last year's Rose Bowl and may potentially revert back to his fleet-footed ways. Meanwhile, Selvin Young (no relation) has filled in flawlessly for Cedric Benson, rushing for 1356 yards and 11 TDs. Limas Sweed had a huge breakout season at WR, catching 70 passes for 945 yards and 13 TDs.

On defense, the Longhorns obviously miss Derrick Johnson, but Aaron Harris had 73 tackles and 3 sacks at MLB. DT Rodrique Wright has 5 sacks, followed by three players with four sacks and four players with three.

Last year the Wolverines and Longhorns produced the greatest Rose Bowl Game of all time. This year, they look to repeat that classic...with a National Championship on the line.

Orange crush: Texas-sized defense clamps down, crushes Michigan's dreams

PASADENA, CA--Vince Young left his Superman jersey at home, completing only 41% of his passes, and for nearly the entire game, he had 18 yards rushing on 11 carries.

But in a cruel twist of fate, the high-octane Michigan offense let the Wolverines down, even when the defense sparkled.

The Longhorns' defense forced three turnovers and kept Michigan out of the endzone, pulverizing the Wolverines 24-3 in the Rose Bowl, completing a 13-0 dream season with an undisputed National Championship.

Chad Henne was only 14-31 passing for 241 yards, and was intercepted once. The Wolverines' devastating running attack was devastated, as Mike Hart had only 54 yards on 18 carries, Kevin Grady had 12 on 9 carries, and subtracting the yardage lost by sacks, the Wolverines had a pathetic 45 yards rushing. Steve Breaston was Michigan's only receiving threat, catching four passes for 56 yards.

Vince Young, as said, was human. He was only 10-24 for 85 yards. Rushing, he finished with 49 yards on 12 carries, scoring a 31-yard TD very late. The run was frighteningly reminiscent of last year, as he broke one tackle, evaded two others, and cruised into the endzone along the sideline. His running mate Selvin Young was very efficient, carrying 15 times for 89 yards. Redshirt frosh Jordan Shipley caught 3 passes for 61 yards.

CB Leon Hall had 10 tackles for Michigan. Prescott Burgess had 6 tackles, and in his final game, Defensive Player of the Year Pierre Woods had 6 tackles and 2 forced fumbles. Jeremy Van Alstyne had UM's only sack.

Cedric Griffin and Robert Killebrew each had seven tackles for the National Champion Longhorns. Killebrew added a sack. Michael Griffin and Larry Dibbles each had 5 tackles. CB Brandon Foster had UT's interception.

With their dreams dashed and their hearts broken for the second straight year by Texas, the Wolverines now enter the offseason with many questions...and they'll see how their new coach can recruit.

                                2006 Season Preview
                                Volume 2, Issue 1

Wolverines' offense seeks immortal status as UM yearns for national glory in 06

ANN ARBOR, MI--Entering the 2006 season, the Michigan Wolverines football team finds themselves in somewhat unfamiliar territory:

                                The national spotlight.

The Wolverines' offense has the potential to be one of the best in recent college football memory. Chad Henne returns for his Junior year at QB. He regressed a bit as a sophomore, mainly due to Braylon Edwards' absence. But with Steve Breaston back for his senior year, Henne may break some Michigan records. Breaston is the explosive deep ball threat, but the UM receiving corp is deep with talent, and a lot of it is young. Sophomore Mario Manningham made a LOT of noise during the offseason, requesting and RECEIVING the fabled #1 jersey. He is coming off a freshman season in which he had 592 yards and four TDs. Adrian Arrington is the current slot man, just beating out Doug Dutch and Carl Tabb. Big things are also expected from the incoming freshman, Edward Ambrose, whom the Wolverines snatched from the state of Ohio, just out of the Buckeyes' grasp. He is already being called The Freak by his teammates, due to his size (6'4, 190) and his blazing speed (4.16 40). And of course at RB, Mike Hart is back for his Junior year after running for 1372 yards and 11 TDs while SPLITTING time with Kevin Grady, who is now a sophomore after rushing for 801 yards and 8 TDs.

On defense, the departure of fumble machine and Defensive Player of the Year Pierre Woods hurts, but UM had some good recruiting Linebacker-wise. Prescott Burgess had 70 tackles and 10 sacks last year, and is poised for a monstrous senior year. Rounding out the LB corp is Shawn Crable inside (converted from the outside) and Chris Graham. On the line, LaMarr Woodley returns after winning the Lombardi Award as a junior. He may be the best defensive player in all of football, and will require constant double teams, opening room for fellow DEs Tim Jamison and heralded freshman Andy Jones, the #1 recruit in the nation during the offseason.

At CB, Leon Hall is the clear #1, and then it all gets crazy. Brandon Harrison, Morgan Trent, Heath Kaplan, Charles Stewart, Darnell Hood, Jason Sinclair, Larry Williams and Trent Mitchell ALL fought for the #2 CB spot. Sinclair, Kaplan and Harrison are the burners of the group, and Harrison has emerged as the #2 for now, but that is in NO WAY set in stone. UM has four very talented safeties, and the starters are currently Senior Ryan Mundy and Junior Jamar Adams.

Groza winner Garrett Rivas returns after missing only a single FG a year ago, and Zoltan Mesko is only a sophomore at punter.

Looking at the schedule, UM will have plenty of chances to prove whether it's a contender for the Fiesta Bowl or not. There are five ranked teams on the schedule, beginning with an immediate showdown vs. #11 Miami in the Big House right off the bat. Three weeks later Michigan heads to South Bend to take on #16 Notre Dame. Other ranked opponents include #23 Michigan State, #6 Iowa, and #8 Ohio State.
