The Kentucky Wildcats were supposed to be sleeper team in this tournament. They awoke far too early for the Auburn Tigers.
The #1 offence in the SEC could only manage 3 hits, and 8 different Wildcats got a hit, as Kentucky disposed of Auburn 6-1 in this opening game.
It was 3-1 at the end of the eighth inning, but Carlos Van Ostrand surrendered 3 runs in the 9th, and the Tigers were never in the game.
Kentucky opened up the scoring in the first on a sac fly that scored Olaf Blunt. They added another run in the sixth to make it 2-0 before Jack McPherson hit a sac fly of his own to make it 2-1.
Auburn, who was supposed to be the overwhelming favourite in this tournament, could not muster any offense against Dan Beltran, who gave up 2 hits in 7 innings. Lyle Albano picked up the save.
The Wildcats will face South Carolina, while Auburn will face rival Alabama in an elimination game.
Tommy Mule sprained his ACL, and will be out 1-2 weeks.
