SEC Tournament - #9 Kentucky vs #2 Auburn

    Auburn Looks "Brutal" In Loss
    Auburn Plainsman
    Thursday, May 28, 2009

The Kentucky Wildcats were supposed to be sleeper team in this tournament. They awoke far too early for the Auburn Tigers.

The #1 offence in the SEC could only manage 3 hits, and 8 different Wildcats got a hit, as Kentucky disposed of Auburn 6-1 in this opening game.

It was 3-1 at the end of the eighth inning, but Carlos Van Ostrand surrendered 3 runs in the 9th, and the Tigers were never in the game.

Kentucky opened up the scoring in the first on a sac fly that scored Olaf Blunt. They added another run in the sixth to make it 2-0 before Jack McPherson hit a sac fly of his own to make it 2-1.

Auburn, who was supposed to be the overwhelming favourite in this tournament, could not muster any offense against Dan Beltran, who gave up 2 hits in 7 innings. Lyle Albano picked up the save.

The Wildcats will face South Carolina, while Auburn will face rival Alabama in an elimination game.

Tommy Mule sprained his ACL, and will be out 1-2 weeks.

After falling to the Kentucky Wildcats, the Auburn Tigers looked to be on the ropes in the SEC Tournament.

They advanced a bit farther, beating Alabama 5-3 today.

The Tigers needed a 4 run outburst in the 6th, led by a 2 RBI double by Dino Caraccioli to take a 5-1 lead, and manged to hold it.

Daniel Hardin picked up his 14th win of the year, 3rd in the NCAA, behind Kent Morgan of Auburn, and John Salem of Virginia.

Eli Drespling returned from a broken leg (which he suffered against Alabama), and played left field, going 0-3.

Alabama is now eliminated from the tournament, but should get a #2 seed at Regionals, possibly in the Auburn one. The Tigers will play the South Carolina Gamecocks, who lost to upstart Kentucky 6-4. On the other side of the bracket, another #4 seed, LSU, is 2-0, while #1 Florida and #2 Arkansas will play today to determine who gets another shot at the Bayou Bengals.

        Auburn Down And Out
        Auburn Plainsman
        Saturday, May 30, 2009

The Tigers may be out of the SEC Tournament, but at least they'll have some time to rest for regionals.

"Yeah, we have to try to find a bright side to it," head coach Tom Slater said after the game. "Now, we've just got to go out and get it done when it counts most."

Auburn, who started a lineup completely composed of backups, will probably host a regional, even after losing to the South Carolina Gamecocks by a score of 9-0.

The Tigers fell behind early 3-0, and never really competed after loading the bases in the fourth.

"We don't have muich to say about this one, so we're just going to wait until the regional groups come out, and then, hopefully, we'll be winning," said Slater.

Look for a regional preview sometime next week in this paper.

          Regional Preview
          Auburn Plainsman
          Wednesday, June 3, 2009

In a weird twist, the Auburn Tigers will host a regional, that will be played in the #2 team's stadium. So let's take a look at the 4 teams in the Tallahassee Regional, the Auburn Tigers, Florida State Seminoles, Nebraska Conhuskers, and Northern Iowa Panthers.

          Tallahassee Regional
          Seed 1 - #2 Auburn Tigers
          Record: 45-18 (20-10)
          Conference Tounrnament (SEC): 1-2
          Best Player: Kelly Christian - 3B (94 OVR - .356, 15 HR, 53 RBI)
          Best Pitcher: Kent Morgan - SP (90 OVR - 15-3, 2.64 ERA)
Outlook: A very good hitting team, that has two aces. Can hit for power, can run, and can play solid defence. The easy favourite to come out of this group, and host a super regional. If they can win the first 2 games, it's basically over.
          Odds: Even

          Seed 2 - #24 Florida State Seminoles
          Record: 36-27 (19-11)
          Conference Tournament (ACC): 0-2
          Best Player: Joe Kuhn - RF (96 OVR - .379, 9 HR, 38 RBI)
Best Pitcher: Brent Hinchliffe - SP (8-7, 3.94 ERA)
Outlook: Very high-scoring team in the normally defensive ACC. Can hit for power as well, but not as fast as Auburn. Also has a much weaker starting staff. Need to win first game to have a chance, because the pitching won't stand up. Home crowd will help them.
          Odds: 5-1

          Seed 3 - Nebraska Conhuskers
          Record: 33-32 (17-13)
Conference Tournament (Big 12): 4-1 (Winner)
          Best Player: Chris Farris - RF (98 OVR - .381, 13 HR, 53 RBI)
          Best Pitcher: Kevin Mura - SP (94 OVR - 10-4, 2.79 ERA)
Outlook: Coming in on a streak after winning the Big 12 tournament. Led the Big 12 in homers by a large margin, and were second in average, only behind #3 Texas Tech. However, have the second worst ERA in the conference, only ahead of dismal Missouri. Need some help to advance.
          Odds: 15-1

Seed 4 - Northern Iowa Panthers
          Record: 32-31 (12-12)
          Conference Tournament (MVC): 1-2
          Best Player: Brent Weibl - 2B (85 OVR - .309, 2 HR, 16 RBI, 13 SB)
          Best Pitcher: Eddy Toca - SP (91 OVR - 9-6, 3.24 ERA)
Outlook: Easily the least talented team in this regional. However, they do have the ability to win 1 big game, and if they can beat Auburn, it will be huge. Very little power for a MVC team, but had a very low ERA. The only team in this regional that depends more on pitching then hitting, which could prove to be either their downfall or their big help.
          Odds: 25-1

          Other SEC Teams in Regionals
Mississippi: #3 Seed in Oxford Regional (1-1)
South Carolina: #2 Seed in Chapel Hill Regional (2-0)
Louisiana State: #3 Seed in Baton Rouge Regional (1-1)
Alabama: #2 Seed in Charlottesville Regional (1-1)
Arkansas: #1 Seed in Clemson Regional (1-1)
Kentucky: #1 Seed in Lexington Regional (1-1)

The Auburn Tigers Road to Omaha started off with a success, as the #1 seed opened up the Tallahassee Regional with a 5-2 win over the Northern Iowa Panthers.

The Tigers fell behind after a 2 run 5th by the Panthers, but scored twice in the bottom of the inning, and maintained the lead for the rest of the game.

Kelly Christian had 2 RBI's for the Tigers, including a solo HR, bringing his total to 56, while Daniel Hardin stole has 28th and 29th bases of the year.

Brian Morales homered for the Panthers, who got a solid pitching performance out of Eddy Toca, who struck out 7 in 5.2 innings of work.

However, the Tigers opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, when Hardin and Jack McPherson led off with walks. Horacio Wigginton singled to right, and Christian hit into a fielder's choice to drive Hardin in.

Auburn will now play the Nebraska Cornhuskers, who surprised Florida State 10-5, and scored 9 runs in the last 3 innings. The Cornhuskers have won 7 of 8.

Northern Iowa will play the Seminoles, who have lost 3 in a row.

                  Auburn Plainsman
                  Sunday, June 7, 2009

The Auburn Tigers are now one game away from elimination, and they are going to be replaying their first game.

By losing to Nebraska 3-2, the Tigers will now have to play Northern Iowa, who shocked Florida State 5-4 in 11 innings. Then, the winner of that game plays the Cornhuskers, and needs to win twice.

Daniel Hardin gave up a big homer to Casey McCoola in the 2nd, and then fell behind 3-0 in the third. Star pitcher Kevin Mura held down the fort for 7.2 innings of solid baseball.

Auburn scored a run in the third on a RBI groundout by Jack McCormick, and seemed to be poised to tie the game with a Horacio Wigginton double scoring Hardin in the 8th. However, catcher Colin Taborelli climbed the brick at Dick Howser Field and brought back a foul popup, killing the rally, and the Tigers could'nt muster anything in the ninth.
