Mt. St. Mary's Mountaineers Career Legacy (CBB2k3)

The Mountaineers finally get a victory with a win in their home opener against New Hampshire 70- . Unfortunately it was the 4th game of the year bringing their record to a dismal 1-3. They did have a tough early road schedule playing at NC State, NC College, and George Washington. The only true blowout of those games was against NC College. Coach Austin Henry struggled to get the kind of performance out of his players that he finally got in the win.

Paced by Sr. Center Nick Dodd's 20ppg, the Mountaineers have three players averaging double figures in points including Jr. PF Angel Rivera and Jr. SG Roland Thompson, each with 11ppg. Dodd and Rivera are also averaging over 8 rpg also. Jr. PG Chris Summers is struggling with 4.5 turnovers per contest with only 16 minute halves. 6th man Ismail Brooks is shooting over 50%.

The Mountees next game is their conference opener against U of Maryland-Baltimore County. This is the first step toward the Northeast title.

Mt. St. Mary\'s Suffers Defeat at the Hands of the Retrievers.

Mt. St Mary's just got handed their 5th loss of the year by U of Marland Baltimore Co. running their record to 1-4, 0-1 in the NEC. The 56-53 loss was heartbreaking as the Mountaineers had several three point attempts miss in the closing seconds.

The real story of the game was UMBC's Andrew Feeney. The center paced the Retreivers with 26pts and 16 rebs in 27mins. He also shot a team high 61%(13-21) from the field. Other than Freeney no other UMBC player scored above 6pts.

The story for Mt. St. Mary's has to be a combination of the injury to So SF Pat Atangana in the first half (shin splints- 1 week), and the foul trouble of dominate big man Nick Dood. Dodd was limited in the second half missing over half of the period. He was still able to pace the team with 18pts in 19mins but was limited to 6rebs and 2blks. He shot a game high 64%(9-14) from the field also. PF Angel Rivera led the team in Dodd's absence with 14rebs (6 offensive) to go along with his 9pts. The backcourt of Chris Summers and Roland Thompson were each held to 7pts a peice included a combined 2-12 from 3 point land. Summers chipped in with 7 turnovers. The bench couldn't help much chipping in only 15 points between them.

The Mountaneers now must regroup and be prepared to travel to Duquesne in 2 days. The really tough portion of their schedule is now begininng.

      Dukes Knocked Off by Mountaineers!

Mt. St. Mary's headed to Duquesne not expected to do much in most people's opinion. They were physically overmatched by thier A-10 opponent but, they did just enough to hold on to win 72-61. The Mountaineers jumped out to an early lead and stretched it to as many as 20 points. The Dukes refused to go away quietly though and narrowed to margin to only 4 with 6 minutes to play. The Mt. St. Mary's took advantage of a +8 turnover margin down the stretch and hot shooting to finally pull away.

Both teams shot the ball extremely well with MSM having the advantage 59% to 57%. The Dukes were even able to out-rebound the Mountaineers 24-21. However, their 24 turnovers ended up being their demise.

The Dukes were paced by PF Brad Midgley's 20pts and 13rbs while shooting 10-15 from the field. PG Tyler Blue also had a big game shooting 2-4 from the land of three to have 11pts and 7assists. Finally C John Pawlak had 16pts and 7rbs to compliment Midgley's inside dominance.

The inside dominance was possible due to the foul trouble of SR C Nick Dodd for the second consecutive game. Dodd (who averages 18ppg) was held to a season low 10pts. He was still the leading rebounder with 7 and contributed with 4 steals and 3 blocks. Picking up the pace during Dodd's void was SG Roland Thompson who had 22pts and 4 assists while shooting 83%(10-12) from the field. Also key were Angel Rivera's 18pts and 3blks even though he was held to a season low 2rbs. The bench was able to produce unlike the last game when Dodd had foul trouble. Back-up PG Ismail Brooks had 8pts and Frosh C Sam Miller contributed 5rbs(all offensive). This was a key victory for a team that has struggled early in the year.

The Mountaineers record is now 2-4 (0-1, NEC) and they have some tough games coming up playing at Maryland College and then home for Navy before traveling to Baylor and Texas. Coach Austin Henry was very pleased with his team's performance: "This is very big emotionally for us. We have some tough games coming up on our schedule and we needed this upset so that we would start believing in ourselves. When i took this job i knew that it would be tough but i think that we are moving in the right direction."

        Mountaineers Lose in Heartbreaker

The Maryland College Flames used hot shooting to beat the Mt. St. Mary's Mountaineers 75-72. The Flames out shot the Mountees 63% to 52%. After jumping out to an early lead the Mountees then fell behind quickly and were trailing for much of the first half and the beginning of the second. Then with 10 minutes remaining in the game the Mountaineers went on a 14-0 run and pulled ahead. The game was back and forth coming down the stretch, but clutch free throw shooting by the flames and a missed Chris Summers 3 pointer led to the loss at the buzzer. The Flames won due to their dominant rebounding winning the battle of the boards 27-23, even though they lost the turnover battle 25-14.

The Flames used 4 of their starters for all 32 minutes and had 4 players in double figures as well. PG Lucious Jordan had a game high 13 assists. SG Charlie Bell had 12 pts and 10 assists. SF Bobby Bowen contributed 14pts and 5 assists. The frontcourt was the Flames' true strength though with PF Donovan Thomas pouring in 19pts and grabbing 14 rebounds and starting C Ira Ngounou scoring 20 and pulling down 7 rebounds. That tandem was assisted by backup C Dan Shimonovic's 8pts and 5rbs. It was a total team effort by the Flames that the Mountaineers couldn't weather.

The Mountaineers were led by PG Chris Summers who had his best game of the year scoring 18 and dishing off 8 assists, while getting 5 steals and limiting himself to 2 turnovers. The frontcourt also performed well with PF Angel Rivera scoring 14 and getting 8rbs. Star C Nick Dodd did score 21 and had 5 steals, but the downfall of the team was evident in the fact that he had only 4rbs.

The 2-4 (0-1, NEC) Mountaineers now return home to prepare for the arival of the Naval Academy, before embarking on a streak of 4 straight road games. Coach Henry was quite dejected after the game. "I thought that this game was very winable. We didn't get the job done defensively and they were really shooting the ball well tonight. They beat us on the boards and if that happens we are going to have a hard time beating anyone. We have to put this behind us now and get ready to play Navy. It is a home game and we are undefeated at home right now. Well at least we are 1-0. We need to get some wins but the most important thing right now is to prepare for the NEC schedule. You have to learn from these types of games."

          Mountaineers Hold Off Navy

The Mt. St. Mary's Mountaineers were able to hold off the late run of the US Naval Academy and emerge with a 69-65 victory, sending their record to 3-5 (0-1, NEC). It was a back and forth struggle the entire game, but a Roland Thompson bucket with 50 seconds to go put the Mountaineers up for good. Both team shot just over 50% and the turnover battle was as close to even as possible with MSM holding a slight 17-18 advantage. The game was won on the boards however with MSM outrebounding the Midshipmen 35-20.

The Midshipmen were paced by the play of a two headed force at center. Starting center Francis Ebong had 21pts and 6rbs while his backup Howard Lettenberger had 18pts and 9rbs. They didn't get the help that they needed for the win however and the only other significant contributer was PG Taj Matthews with 12pts and 7assists. Ebong was very frustrated after the game. "Both teams shot well and they couldn't stop us inside, but when shots were missed we were unable to grab them."

The Mountaineers enjoyed a great team performance. The leading scorer was PF Angel Rivera with 23pts while adding 4assists and 7rbs. C Nick Dodd was strapped with foul trouble again and could only score 12pts, but did grab 7 boards. His backups Sam Miller and Paul Webber combined for 10 rebounds also. SF Pat Atangana had 6rbs too. Finally, PG Chris Summers played his second great game in a row scoring 14, with 5 assists and 8 steals. He was very pleased with his performance, "I am finally starting to get a little bit of production going. I just hope that i can continue to help out the club in whatever way neccesary in every game. We have a tough road ahead and i think that my play will be very significant to the success of the team."

The 14 pts raised Summers average to 10.3ppg, making him the 4th player on the team to average double figures with Dodd (17.6), Rivera (13.9) and Roland Thompson (11). The Mountaineers will now travel to the Lone Star State to play Texas and then Baylor. Coach Henry said, "we know that both of these Big 12 schools now how to play and we just have to play our game and try to make them make mistakes."

Mt. St. Mary\'s Loses a Pair in the Lone Star State

The Mt. St. Mary's Mountaineers lost back to back games at Texas and then Baylor to drop thier record to 3-7 (0-1, NEC). They were totally dominated by UT from tip-off losing in a rout that was probably not as close as the 72-54 score. Then against the Baylor Bears, MSM wasn't able to hold onto an early lead getting outscored 49-31 in the second half to fall by a count of 85-69.

Texas physically manhandled the undersized Mountaineers with C James Thomas leading the way with 26pts and 12rbs while shooting an amazing 12-14 from the field. PG T.J. Ford dished out twelve assists with his backup Drew Greer pouring in 10pts. Forwards Brandon Mouton and Brian Boddicker had 13 and 17 points respectivley with Boddicker pitching in with 6 boards. The real tale of the game though was the shooting performances. UT outshot MSM 60% to 49% and outscored them on the fast break 14-0.

The Mountaineers only source of production came from PF Angel Rivera who scored 20 with 8rbs. He did struggle taking care of the ball committing 7 TO's. Nick Dodd pitched in with 10pts but could only muster 4rbs while his backup frosh C Sam Miller grabbed 7 in limited action. The backcourt added little in terms of production with the combination of Chris Summers and Roland Thompson only scoring 11pts with 3 assists and 3rbs. They were able to collect 8 cummulative steals though.

It was a different story against Baylor though with it being a back and forth struggle early which resulted in a MSM 38-36 halftime lead. The game was won on the boards and from the charity stripe. Baylor outrebounded MSM 28-17 and was 19-22(86%) from the foul line with MSM shooting 5-12(42%)

All 5 starters and 1 reserve were in double figures for the Bears with the only standout being PF Lawrence Roberts. Roberts, who played the entire game, scored 19pts and collected 17rbs. Coach Henry was impressed by the overall team performance by the Bears, "we put them down early but they didn't quit. Every person that stepped on the coart for their team contributed. Roberts was especially hard to stop. We should have just stayed in the locker room at the half and gone home. I would have been less embarrassing than what happened in the second half. I am very dissapointed in the heart that our team showed tonight. If we play like we did in the second half we don't have a chance of competing for a Northeast Conference crown."

The only postive for the Mountaineers was that SF Pat Atangana had his best game of the year scoring 14pts. Rivera and Dod were able to add 12 and 14 respectively but the frontcoart trio was only able to grab a combined 12rbs.

"This was a tough road trip for us." We were unable to do anything in Texas. We are really looking for our team's identity right now. Just when we think that we are starting to turn the corner we get crushed in two straight games like what happened here. We have got to do something to get this ship on track."

            NOTES:
The Mountaineers start the meat of their conference schedule against St. Francis (PA). A preview is forthcoming.

                MSM Wins in Rout!

The Mt. St. Mary's Mountaineers crushed the St. Francis(PA) Red Flash 90-63. The offense of the Mountaineers was just too much for the Flash as they won the shooting battle 68% to 53%. The Mountees also had an advantage on the boards winning 25-19. Coach Henry was very pleased, "this was a huge win for us. We are only now really starting our conference schedule so hopefully this will give us some momentum as we try to finish the second half of the season strong. We really shot the ball well and that is really all that we neede tonight to get the win. I am really proud of our guys."

All 5 MSM starters reached double figures for the first time this season. Chris Summers played wonderfully at the point scoring 25pts while shooting 3-6 from three land and dishing out 7 assists. Angel Rivera matched Summers' 25pts and shot a staggering 11-12 (92%) from the field. SG Roland Thompson pitched in 10pts and 6 assists while Pat Atangana was good all around with 11pts, 4asts, and 5rbs. The leading scorer for the year Nick Dodd managed 13pts and 7 rbs. His backup Sam Miller led the team in rebounding with 8 in only 11minutes.

The Red Flash were led by C Jason Osborne with 22pts and 6rbs. He didn't get much help though with the only other players in double figures Rodney Gibson and Steveroy Daley managing only 12 and 16 points respectively.

The Mountaineers (now 4-7,1-1) next play against Robert Morris who is 1-9 (0-2) on the year. Summers is excited about their opportunity. "We have to go on the road again, but i think that we will be ok. If we can play like we did tonight it will be tough for anyone to beat us."

MSM Splits a Pair of NEC Games

The Mt. St. Mary's Mountaineers kept their conference record at .500 by splitting a pair of games against the Robert Morris Colonials and the LIU Blackbirds. MSM first lost a tough game on the road to the Colonials 77-71. They quickly rebounded however to spank LIU 82-65. The win brought their season record to 5-8 and their confernce mark to 2-2.

Against Robert Morris, MSM outshot the Colonials 58% to 52% but was unable to take care of the ball with 29 turnovers while giving up 15 offensive rebounds. C Brent Thomas led the Colonials with 20pts and 11rbs with help from frontcourt mate Aaron Thomas who had 18pts, 5asts, and 7rbs. They also had good production at the point with Maurice Carter scoring 13 and handing out 6asts. The only significant contributions from MSM came from SR C Nick Dodd (19pts, 5rbs) and JR PF Angel Rivera (14pts 9rbs). PG Chris Summers did score 10pts but was a major factor turning the ball over 7 times. Another huge disappointment was the combination of SG Roland Thompson and SF Pat Atangana who combined for 10pts and 3rbs.

The Mountaineers were able to turn things around quickly though and rebound for a huge win against LIU. The win also kept them undefeated at home. The Mountaineers shot only 51% to the Blackbird's 48% but were able to outrebound them 41-27. Coach Henry was very happy afterward, "we learned against Robert Morris how important rebounding was and we obviously decided that we could do a better job of it. We shot well and when we did miss we got the rebound most of the time and those second chances make a big difference in the outcome of games.

MSM had 5 players in double figures led by Rivera's 21pts. The center position was also a real strong point for MSM with Dodd scoring 13 with 9rbs and his backup FR C Sam Miller having a double-double with 11pts and 11rbs. Thompson and Atangana responded from their bad games to score 10 points each in this contest.

The Blackbird's only sources of scoring came from the frontcourt as C Craig Taylor had 13pts and 10rbs and PF Dawan Gary had 10pts. SF Jaja Bey also had 10pts. The loss dropped the Blackbirds to 5-8,2-2 also on the year.

MSM will next face off against NY College at home and try to keep their home undefeated streak in tact.

Mountaineers Continue Run with Back to Back Wins

The Mt. St. Mary's Mountaineers were able to run their winning streak to a season high 3 games with a pair of wins over NY College and LIU. Playing in the friendly confines of the Knott Center, MSM was able to hold of the NYC Lions by a score of 79-75. Then travelling to Long Island and the hostle Schwartz Athletic Center the Mountaineers cruised to a 93-74 victory.

The story of the game against NYC was MSM's dominate shooting a rebounding. The won the shooting battle by a count of 62% to 49% and held a rebounding edge of 30-24. It wasn't easy overcoming their absurd amount of turnovers (32). The Mountaineers held a narrow lead at the half and were just able to pull out a victory in the closing minutes. They were led as usual by one of the premier frontcourts in the NEC with PF Angel Rivera scoring 18pts with 6rbs and C Nick Dodd scoring 15pts with 6rbs and 4blks. PG Chris Summers also contributed with 12pts and 5asts, but was very discouraged by his 9 turnovers. The suprise of the game would have to be backup SG Bob Faulkner who reached double figures for the first time this year with 12 pts. The Lions had contributers all over the place even in defeat. SG Bronski Dockery was unstoppable with 25pts. He had a lot of help too with SF Patricio Tabias' 13pts and PF Clifford Strong's 11pts, 6rbs. C Chris Sockwell also managed 14pts and 8rbs. PG Toree Chavis was a force at the point with 11asts and 5stls. It all wasn't enough though as the Mountees barely squeaked out a W.

Things were much easier against LIU. The Blackbirds proved to be no competition for the Mountaineers being outshot 63% to 45% and outrebounded 38 to 22. The Blackbirds were led by PF Dawan Gary's 22pts and 8rbs. SF Jaja Bell's 14pts and SG Antawn Dobbins' 10pts and 6asts were the only other significant contributions. The real story of the game was the domination of SR C Nick Dodd. He was a force to be reconned with scoring 35pts on 17-23 shooting (74%) with 16 rbs. Coach Henry wasn't suprised by Dodd's performance. "I knew that he had this kind of game in him. He has been a consistent leader all year long and this game was almost like a showcase for his talents. He shot, he scored, he rebounded, he blocked. He showed how overall dominant he really is. I think that he might be the best player in the NEC." Dodd's contributions weren't the only significant one's however with Rivera pitching in 10pts and 7rbs with SF Pat Atangana scoring 15 and SG Roland Thompson scoring 13. Summers struggled again with 10 turnovers to go with his 6pts and 4asts. The bench contributor of the game was SO PF Paul Webber grabbing 6rbs in only 9mins.

The wins take the MSM record to 7-8 (4-2 NEC) and creates a lot of momentum. Coach Henry is looking forward to the rest of the year. "We have NY College again in our next game so we need to be ready for them to come for revenge, but a victory would take us to .500 and that would be huge for our team. We have won 3 of our last 4 so we are very hot."

                          Mountaineers Streak Ends at Three

The Mt. St. Mary's were handed they're first loss in four games when they traveled to the NYC Center to play the NY College Lions. The 75-63 loss not only ends the three game winning streak but drops their record to 7-9 (4-3 NEC). Poor shooting would end up being the demise of the Mountaineers as they could only manage 39% from the field (14% 3ptfg) and 58% from the foul line. The Lions were able to shoot 54% from the field (57% 3ptfg) and 83% from the charity stripe.

The Lions were led by PF Clifford Strong's 24pts and 18rbs. He had a lot of help though with SG Bronski Dockery, the leading scorer from the last meeting, scoring 13pts with 8asts. The other key contributors included PG Toree Chavis with 10pts and 7asts and C Chris Sockwell with 8pts 7rbs.

The Mountaineers held a narrow 33-32 halftime lead but were not able to stay with the Lions in the second half. The Mountaineers had no real standout players for the night. SF Pat Atangana was the leading scorer with 14pts, but the most productive player was C Nick Dodd with 12pts and 8rbs. Other key players inculded PF Angel Rivera with 9pts and 8rbs and SG Roland Thompson with 10pts. Coach Henry wasn't too disappointed with the loss. "This one is tough because of the success that we have had recently. I guess that we will just have to start another winning streak next game."

Up Then Down for the Mountaineers Over 5 Game Run

The Mt. St. Mary's Mountaineers have been riding a roller coaster over the past couple of weeks. They were able to win 3 straight games and take their record to a 10-9 record (7-3, NEC). The wins over Monmouth, Fairleigh Dickinson, and Central Connecticut St. were by the scores of 96-73, 88-78, and 88-65. They were relatively easy wins with the first 2 of the three taking place at home. The succes was short lived though because just as quickly as the winning streak began, it came to an end. The Mountaineers proceeded to lose 2 straight to Quinnipac and then UM Baltimore County. The scores were 79-82, and 65-91 respectively. So after the five games the season record is 10-11, 7-5 NEC, with only six games left before the conference tourney. Right now the Mountaineers are tied for first in the confernce and are fighting for a number one seed in the tournament. The last loss to UMBC was the first at home on the year bringing MSM's home record to 6-1.

NOTES: In the 5 games the leading scorers were: SR C Nick Dodd twice with 27pts twice, SO SF Pat Atangana with 23pts, and JR PF Angel Rivera twice, with 16pts and 28pts. Dodd had two double double's and Rivera added one also.

The Mountaineers have 6 regular season games remaining and will look to run the table for momentum in the tournament.
