    MSM Slips by Dartmouth

The Mountaineers of Mt. St. Mary's traveled to Leede Arena to face off against the Big Green of Dartmouth and expected a hard fight. That is exactly what they got as they narrowly escaped with a 78-68 victory. Dartmouth started the game on a 12-4 run and MSM could only cut the lead to 20-19 with 7:00 left in the first. Dartmouth was back up 39-30 at the break though dominating the boards 18-11. The second half was nip and tuck for the most part with MSM finally taking the lead 63-62 with only 4:30 to play. The game was sealed on a Chris Summers 3 with 1:08 remaining that put the Mountaineers up 74-68. MSM did lose the rebounding battle 28-31, but were able to overcome the defecit with great shooting hitting 58% from the field to Dartmouth's 45%.

The frontcourt of Dartmouth was incredible. Frosh PF Clayton Elder led the team with 18pts 11rbs and 5asts. He was helped by the C combo of Scott Klatsky and Cameron Elder who had 16pts/6rbs and 18pts/5rbs respectively. They didn't get enough help though to earn a victory.

All 5 Mountaineers starters reached double figures led by C Isaac Harvey and his 19pts 10rbs and 4asts. PF Damon Killingsworth had 14pts 5rbs. SF Pat Atangana chipped n with 11pts 5rbs, while Summers and SG Roland Thompson had 11 and 14pts respectively. A little bit of bench produciton was added by freshman SG Chris Neal who had 7pts in only 4min.

The Mountaineers are now 2-1 and due to play next, at home against 0-1 UC Irvine.

Three in a row by MSM

The UC Irvine Anteaters came to the Knott Center to see what all the hype was about and the MSM Mountaineers responded, posting a 92-81 victory over the west coast foes. The game was a back and forth struggle early with the lead changing hands several times in a first half that ended with a small 44-43 MSM lead. The pivitol moment of the game came with 9:30 left in the contest. The Anteaters had a 62-59 lead and MSM C Isaac Harvey had to go to the bench with his 3rd foul. The Mountaineers proceeded to go on an 11-0 run that would be the difference in the game as MSM held of a late UC Irvine charge. Both teams shot the ball over 60% but MSM outrebounded UCI 27-25.

The player of the game was without a doubt Damon Killingsworth. He was able to provide much of the scoring punch with Harvey in foul trouble. He had 36pts and 14rbs. Harvey was able to score 12pts with 9rbs in his limited action also. PG Chris Summers led the backcourt with 19pts and SF Pat Atangana had 14pts.

The Mountaineers had a tough time controlling the opposing team's inside game for the second consecutive game. PF Stanislav Zuzak had 26pts and 9rbs. While C's Adam Parada and Harry Fox combined for 29pts and 10rbs.

Coach Hendry was glad to get a win, "We were really fortunate to get a win tonight. If we wouldn't have shot the ball so well we would have lost tonight because we couldn't do anything to stop their inside game. This is becoming a problem for us and it will catch up to us eventually. It is a big win though. We have a chance to win 4 in a row now which we have never done in my 2 years here. UMBC has a good ball club though and we lost over there last year." The Mountaineers are 3-1 and open NEC action next at 0-1 UMBC.

          Mountaineers Stretch Streak to Four

The MSM Mountaineers got an early jump on the conference schedule defeating U Maryland Baltimore Co. 84-73. The RAC Arena crowd was hoping that the Retrievers would be able to win their first game of the year, but a well rounded attack spured MSM on to victory. The first half was a tight struggle with MSM holding a slim 42-36 lead at halftime. It wasn't until the 10:30 mark in the second half that the Mountaineers were able to have a solid lead at 59-48. That was the way the lead remained down the stretch with the 11pt win by MSM. Both teams shot well from the field with UMBC holding a 58% to 57% advantage. But MSM was able to outrebound the Retrievers by 4 and shot 6-12 from 3pt land while UMBC was held to 0-7.

The Mountaineers were led by SR SG Roland Thompson who had 29pts on the night. He shot an amazing 69% from the field, but an even more staggering 71% from 3 (5-7). PF Damon Killingsworth scored 16pts with 7rbs and SF Pat Atangana had 14pts. C Isaac Harvey had 8pts, 8rbs and Frosh SG Chris Neal had 7pts, and 2stls in 5min. Unfortunately, PG Chris Summers had 10 turnovers.

Once again a MSM opposition was lead by an inside attack with PF Eugene Young leading the way for UMBC with 22pts and 10rbs. C's Andrew Feeney and Thomas Lane combined for 32pts and 15rbs.

Coach Hendry is concerned about the lack of an inside defensive presence. "We are continuing to get away with it for now, but we have Arizona next and they will make us pay if we can't stop them. We played pretty well tonight and shot lights out. But we can't count on that kind of scoring every night if we want to win." Roland Thompson tried to downplay his great performance. "I was seeing the basket really well tonight, which is nice because i have been struggling so far this year. I really feel like i am getting a sense of rythm and that will be important as the year progresses."

Next up for the 4-1 (1-0) Mountaineers will be the #1 ranked team in the land. They will travel to Tuscon to play the 3-0 Wildcats of Arizona.

MSM Falls to #1 Ranked Arizona

The Wildcats of Arizona were a little bit too strong for the small conference Mountaineers from Mt. St. Mary's. The McKale Memorial Center crowd did not go away disappointed as their Cats remained unbeaten on the year to retain their #1 ranking. The game wasn't even as close as the score might indicate with the final being 86-75.

The game was close early with the score going back and forth the entire first half. The score was tied at 24 with 4:30 left in the half but MSM was able to go on a 13-8 run to end the half up 37-32. An upset was brewing but the lead was only due to a big advantage in both shooting (65% to 48%) and rebounding (15-10). It only took 4 minutes for the WIldcats to erase the lead. With 13:00 left in the contes the score was 45-45. Arizona then proceed to go on a 25-6 run to put the game out of reach. MSM attempted to make a comback but cam up 11pts short. The shooting evened out with both clubs shooting 59%. The rebounding battle also tilted the way of Arizona with the final edge being 28-21.

The player of the game would have to be SG Salim Stoudamire with 25pts. C Channing Frye had an excellent game also with 23pts and 12rbs. Help also cam from SF Marc Simmons with 15pts, 9rbs and PF Austin Grant 12pts, 7rbs, 5stls.

The leading scorer for the Mountaineers was backup SG Chris Neal with 16pts. The inside game wasn't up to par though with C Isaac Harvey's 12pts and 4rbs and PF Damon Killingsworth's 14pts and 7rbs. PG Chris Summers was able to score 12pts though. Coach Hendry was fairly pleased with the performance. "We were playing the best team in the country tonight and it showed. We were physically overmatched and also overmatched talentwise. The way that we stayed close the first half was encouraging. This is the type of team that we would play in the NCAA tournament if we make it so we need to be ready to play against this type of competition. We learned a lot tonight and will hold our head high and move on."

MSM's record is now 4-2 (1-0, NEC). Next up the Mountaineers return home to play MAC opponent Kent St. who is 2-1.

                      MSM Starts New WInning Streak

The Mountaineers returned to the Knott Center after falling to Arizona looking to get another winning streak started. The Kent St. Golden Flashes didn't have an answer to the inside attack of the Mountaineers as they fell by the score of 75-72. MSM was able to come back from a 38-36 halftime deficet by shooting well in the second half. For the first time in coach Hendry's tenure, the Mountaineers won a game when they were outrebounded. The lost the rebounding battle 33-25. They were able to outshoot the Flashes 53% to 46%.

The frontcourt of the Mountaineers was the key led by Freshman C Isaac Harvey and his 29pts, 8rbs. PF Damon Killngsworth also got into the act scoring 12pts and 6rbs. Chris Summers did score 11pts and had 5stls but he could only shoot 3-16 from the field (19%). Coach Hendry was suprised by the win even though they didn't play well. "We were beaten on the boards and turned the ball over too much but still one. That is a great testament to our team that we can overcome those obstacles."

The Golden Flashes were also led by an inside attack with PF Nate Gerlach and C Darrian Campbell combining for 30pts and 17rbs. SG Logan Crenshaw did score 10pts.

The Mountaineers are now 5-2 (1-0, NEC) on the year and nex play 2-2 Eastern Kentucky.

Mountaineers Take Care of Eastern Kentucky

The Mt. St. Mary's Mountaineers remained unbeaten at home on the year at 3-0 by defeating the Eastern Kentucky Colonels 106-56. This would have to be considered the best performance by MSM since coach Austin Hendry took over nearly a year and a half ago. It was also the first time that MSM went over 100 points in a game. It didn't take long for the Mountaineers to take control with their lead at halftime being 43-25. But things really got out of control in the second half with MSM outscoring E. Kentucky 59-31. For the game MSM outshot the Colonels 64%-45% and outrebounded them 30-16. It was really a truly dominate performance by the Mountaineers.

Eastern Kentucky could only manage to get three players in double figures. PF Michael Haney had 13pts and 6rbs. C James Leonard had 12pts and 5rbs. An PG Mike Scott had 10pts and 5stls.

Every starter scored in double figures for MSM led by PF Damon Killingsworth and his 38pts and 14rbs. C Isaac Harvey also had a double-double with 21pts and 10rbs. SF Pat Atangana had 16pts. PG Chris Summers chipped in with 10pts and 4asts and SG Roland Thompson had 14pts and 4stls. Coach Hendry was absolutely elated after the victory. "This is as close to perfect as i have ever seen a team play and this gives us a huge confidence boost as we look ahead to conference play. We do have Bama next so we better let this win go and get ready because they really know how to play ball. We feel like we could play with anyone though right now."

As coach Hendry mentioned the 6-2 (1-0, NEC) Mountaineers will play at 7-3 Alabama next.
