Mt. St. Mary\'s Regular Season in Review

The MSM Mountaineers head into the NEC tournament as the 4 seed in a very even league. They finished the regular season with an overall record of 14-13 and a league record of 11-7. The Mountaineers led the conference in several key categories including: scoring (74.2 ppg), rebounding (30.6 rpg), offensive rebounding (11.5 orpg), steals (9.4 stls), fg% (51.7%fg). They were last in the league in both turnovers (19 topg), and 3 point %(17.8%3pfg). They were still able to finish tied for 4th in the conference and will get the number 4 seed in the tourney. Their first round matchup is against 5 seeded Quinnipiac.

        Player Reviews:
        Starters:
SR C Nick Dodd: Dodd was the Mountaineers MVP for the regular season and was a first team All-NEC selection. He led the team in scoring (17.1ppg), blocks (1.6blks), and shooting (68%fg). He was also able to pull down 7.2rpg and shoot 67%ft. His biggest weakness would have to be staying out of foul trouble, but outside of that he is a great all around player.

JR PF Angel Rivera: Rivera was also a key contributor for the Mountaineers and was another first team All-NEC player. He led the team in minutes (29.2minpg), and rebounding (7.3rpg). He also added in 16.1ppg while shooting 65% from the field. His biggest weakness would have to be foul shooting as he was able to hit a meager 49% from the foul stripe. Outside of that he is a dominating inside prescense.

JR PG Chris Summers: Summers was a bit inconsistent at the point although he improved as the year went along. He was able to lead the team in assists (3.8apg), steals (2.1spg), and free throw shooting (82%ft). He also chipped in 11.0ppg while shooting 41% from the field. His two weaknesses are 3 point shooting (20%3pfg) and taking care of the ball (4.6topg). He is a great penetrator and has the potential to hit big shots when under pressure.

JR SG Roland Thompson: Thompson solidified the backcourt with Summers. He was the teams' leading 3 point shooter (23%3pfg). He shot 41% from the field and 71% from the free throw line. He was able to score 9.7ppg while becoming an excellent defender. His biggest weakness is being able to hit the open shot. He really needs a man in his face to be real effective.

SO SF Pat Atangana: Atangana was a solid contributor for the team as he did a lot of things good while doing nothing great. He "just" scored 9.3ppg, shooting 55% from the field (22%3pfg), and grabbing 3.9rbg. He was also solid from the foul line hitting 63%. He holds the title as of the teams best dunker and is best off the dribble. He needs to add some defensive intensity though as the post season begins.

Reserves:These 2 players are the only subs with more than 2ppg

FR C Sam Miller: Miler is an vital sub for the Mountaineers, especially because of Dodd's foul troube. He averaged 12.3 minutes for the year due to Dodd being out of the lineup. In that limited time he was able to score 3.5ppg and most importantly grap 5.1rpg. His rebounding was the key to many Mountaineer vicories. His major weakness would have to be inside shooting because he was only able to hit 40% of his shots, many from the paint.

JR PG Ismail Brooks: Brooks was a key sub for the backcourt. He was able to spell Summers for 7.6minpg. He scored 3.4ppg shooting 44% from the field, and 86% from the foul line. His biggest weakness is 3 point shooting as he shot 4.3% for the year. His strength is taking the ball to the basket and finishing strong.

Mt. St. Mary\'s Hangs on for First Round Win

The Mt. St. Mary's Mountaineers were prepared for battle as they entered the Spiro Sports Center on the Wagner College Campus and they got the war they expected against the Quinnipiac Bobcats. The back and forth battle was tightly contested throughout until the final minutes as MSM was able to pull away for a 74-48 victory that was closer than the score indicated.
The first half was close with a pivotal moment coming with 9:28 remaining and the score 16-11 in MSM favor. Nick Dodd got called for his 2nd foul and had to sit down for the rest of the half. The Mountaineers went on a run though and with 4:00 to go they were ahead 30-17 after a Angel Rivera putback dunk. They went on the finish the first half with a 32-22 advantage. Shooting was a problem for both teams with Quinnipiac holding a slight 42% to 41% advantage. The biggest differnce in the first half was rebounding with MSM dominating 24-12 and 11-3 on the offensive glass. Rivera finished the half with 6pts and 7rbs.

The second half was just more of the same for the Mountaineers as they dominated the boards. However Quinnipiac started hot with a 6-0 run with 13:30 left in the game to cut the score to 34-31. But that would be as close as they would get. Dodd would get his third foul with 12:02 reamaining and with the Mountaineers ahead 38-35. MSM would respond by going on a 7-0 with 9:00 left to get out to a 46-35 lead. At the 2 minute mark backup C Sam Miller would get a double double by scoring his 10th point of the game and making the score 62-46. The Mountaineers would go on to win 74-48 going on a 20-2 run to end the game.

The key to the game was the Mountaineers dominance on the boards. They outrebounded Quinnipiac 51-22 and 19-6 offensively. They also picked up the shooting finishing 49% from the field to QU's 38%. They were out blocked 16-2 but held a 16-2 edge in bench points and a 22-8 advantage in second chance points.

The only real bright spots for the Bobcats were PF Jeremy Bishop and his 16pts and 6rbs and C CJ Victor and his 17pts and 11rbs.

The Mountaineers were paced by Rivera who had 20pts and 17rbs. The center position was a big advantage for the Mountaineers with Dodd scoring 12pts with 9rbs and Miller chipping in 10pts and 11rbs. PG Chris Summers was able to score 11pts with 3rbs and 3asts. He did have 4 turnovers though. SG Roland Thompson could only manage 9pts and 5rbs with SF Pat Atangana scoring 6pts with a meager 3rbs.

Coach Hendry was excited about the win. "We really dominated inside and didn't miss a beat when Nick had to leave the game with foul trouble. Angel really picked up the slack and the backcourt contributed just what we needed. Our defense was also stifling down the stretch. I am excited to see how far we can go in this tournament." The road is about to get tougher for the Mountaineers as their next game is against number 1 seed Central Conn. St. "We are going to have to play a perfect game against CCS. They crushed us in the regular season finale, so we better be ready to go when we step on the court."

Mt. St. Mary\'s Falls but Looks forward to 2003-04

The Mountaineers of Mt. St. Mary's had thier season brought ot an abrupt halt against the Blue Devils of Central Conn. State in the second round of the NEC tourney. The 75-70 loss was tought to swallow for a team that was up and down the whole season. MSM entered the Spiro Sports Center hoping to extend their season and get a shot at the NCAA tournament but were unable to win the big game.

The first half was a back and forth defensive struggle that finished with CCSU ahead by a 30-28 score. Both teams shot under 45% and had over 10 turnovers. The Devils set themselves apart in the rebounding department with a 17 to 14 edge. They were led by Frosh C Robert Barrett with 14pts and 6rbs. The Mountaineers were led by C Nick Dodd and his 6pts and 4rbs although he shot a mere 2-11 from the field.

The second half was much more offensive oriented with MSM taking their first lead with 12:30 left at 41-40. CCSU then was able to stretch their lead to as much as 9 with MSM battling back to cut it to as little as 2. They could never make it all the way back though and a lack of 3 point shooting really hurt them down the stretch. For the game CCSU shot 54% from the field to MSM's 46%. They also won the rebounding battle 36-30 and had a 14-6 edge in second chance points.

The Devils were led by Barrett and his 29pts and 16rbs. He was helped by PG John Alexander and his 12pts and 6asts. PF Rich Pittman had 13rbs.

The Mountaineers were led by Dodd who had a game high 30pts and 13rbs with 5stls. He could only manage to shoot 12-26 from the field though. PF Angel Rivera did score 15pts but could only manage 4rbs. That was about it for the Mountees with SG Roland Thompson scoring 9pts with 5rbs and PG Chris Summers scoring 5pts with 7 turnovers. The Mountaineers finished the year with a record of 15-14 and now have the task of winning more games next year.

                    Preseason 2003-2004

After the Mt. St. Mary's Mountaineers lost in the NEC tournament coach Hendry immediately started looking forward to next year. Already losing star C Nick Dod and backup SG Bob Faulkner a bombshell was dropped. The Mountaineers best returning player PF Angel Rivera declared himself eligible for the NBA draft, leaving the Mountaineers reeling. So the recruiting process began with MSM needing a C, PF, and SG.

Coach Hendry had a wonderful recruiting season though that suprised many experts. Their prized recruit was the 154th best player in the land, a 4-star PF from Arlington, VA, Damon Killingsworth. He is a 6'9", 212 pounder who is a shot blocking specialist. His overall 80 rating makes him an instant starter who should contribute immediately. The next best recruit was the 236th ranked player in the nation, Chris Neal. A 3-star SG from Muncie, IN, Neal will be a backup in his freshman campaign. He is a 6'7" 218lb defensive specialist with a 77 overall ranking. His defensive ranking is 93 though. Finally, the Mountaineers were able to sign Isaac Harvey, the 628th ranked player. A 3-star C from Brooklyn, the 6'10" 234 pounder is also a shot blocking speciallist. His overall ranking is only a 72 but he will be a starter from the beginning of his career.

The recruiting season went well but the road will not be easy for the Mountaineers. 8 of their first 12 games will be on the road including visits to North Carolina, Florida A&M, Arizona, and Alabama.

                        Mountaineers Fall to UNC

The Mt. St. Mary's Mountaineers fell in their season opener to an overpowering North Carolina club by an 81-62 count. The game was never really close after the Tarheels took the lead just past the midway point in the first half. The key to the UNC victory was hot shooting and a 30-25 rebounding advantage. They outshot MSM 56% to 44%. It was close early with MSM actually leading 23-18 with 9:30 left in the first. However, UNC quickly erased the lead and built one of their own, leading 45-34 at the break.

Four minutes into the second the Heels had stretched their lead to 59-40. The win takes UNC to 1-0 and MSM to 0-1. The Heels were led by PF Jay Williams and his 32pts and 10rbs. He was helped by C Sean May (11pts, 10rbs, 3blks), and SF Jackie Mann 16pts. Sg Raymond Felton was able to contribute with 7asts.

The MSM squad was led by SR PG Chris Summers and his 14pts and 3asts, but the story of the game was the debut of the Freshman frontcourt. C Isaac Harvey had 10pts and 8rbs, although he shot only 36%, and PF Damon Killingsworth had 10pts and 9rbs. Backup PF Ismail Brooks was the only real bench contributor with 7pts.

Mountaineers Respond with Win at FAMU

After a tough loss at the Dean Dome at the hands of the mighty Tarheels the Mountaineers traveled to Talhassee Florida to play the Florida A&M Rattlers. Gaither Gym was pumped as the 1-0 Rattlers were big favorites against the 0-1 Mountees.

The game started out very close with the first real advantage going to MSM as they went ahead with 7:00 to play in the first, 28-21. That carried them to a slim 36-35 halftime lead. The game was back and forth all the way down the stretch and the Mountaineers rode a strong inside presence to a 71-66 victory. The game was fairly even with each team hitting 51% from the field, but the big difference was on the boards where MSM had a 35-28 edge.

FAMU was led by their center combination of Jermaine Hill and Todd Ubaka. They were able to combine for an unbelievable 37pts and 15rbs. They didn't have enough help though with PG Moses White scoring 9pts with 12asts and PF Dave Campbell scoring 10pts with 6rbs.

MSM was also lead by an inside attack. Frosh C Isaac Harvey had 16pts, 14rbs, 4stls, and 3blks. His classmate and fellow post, PF Damon Killingsworth had 12pts and 11rbs. Senior leadership was present though with SG Roland Thompson leading the team with 21pts. SR PG Chris Summers chipped in with 10pts. Coach Hendry was ecstatic after the win: "we have a really brutal early schedule so it is big when we get any victory, much less a W on the road. This is really big for our team and we hope we can build on this momentum next week."

MSM is now 1-1 on the year and will play at 2-0 Dartmouth next.

                                MSM Slips by Dartmouth

The Mountaineers of Mt. St. Mary's traveled to Leede Arena to face off against the Big Green of Dartmouth and expected a hard fight. That is exactly what they got as they narrowly escaped with a 78-68 victory. Dartmouth started the game on a 12-4 run and MSM could only cut the lead to 20-19 with 7:00 left in the first. Dartmouth was back up 39-30 at the break though dominating the boards 18-11. The second half was nip and tuck for the most part with MSM finally taking the lead 63-62 with only 4:30 to play. The game was sealed on a Chris Summers 3 with 1:08 remaining that put the Mountaineers up 74-68. MSM did lose the rebounding battle 28-31, but were able to overcome the defecit with great shooting hitting 58% from the field to Dartmouth's 45%.

The frontcourt of Dartmouth was incredible. Frosh PF Clayton Elder led the team with 18pts 11rbs and 5asts. He was helped by the C combo of Scott Klatsky and Cameron Elder who had 16pts/6rbs and 18pts/5rbs respectively. They didn't get enough help though to earn a victory.

All 5 Mountaineers starters reached double figures led by C Isaac Harvey and his 19pts 10rbs and 4asts. PF Damon Killingsworth had 14pts 5rbs. SF Pat Atangana chipped n with 11pts 5rbs, while Summers and SG Roland Thompson had 11 and 14pts respectively. A little bit of bench produciton was added by freshman SG Chris Neal who had 7pts in only 4min.

The Mountaineers are now 2-1 and due to play next, at home against 0-1 UC Irvine.
