'Noles Return To Glory (PS2 - NCAA 07 Dynasty)

    Florida State’s Return to Glory

That’s what many people are proclaiming as a new coach has come on board at the former powerhouse. In an effort to revitalize the sleeping powerhouse, a new coach, Charlie Johnson was hired on, but not as head coach. Johnson will oversee all parts of the team, effectively taking on the assistant head coach role. He will have an active role in shaping the players, as well as recruiting, discipline, and team philosophies. He has no previous coaching experience to speak of, but has described himself as a "student of the game." The idea was to bring new blood into the organization while keeping the figure head, Bobby Bowden, as the head coach. Not only will this help infuse new blood into the team, into the university, but it allows FSU to keep some of its pull as a great recruiting team with the hallowed Bowden still at the helm. Some see this as a sign of desperation or a way to force Bowden out should Johnson right the ship, but the university, through the athletic director state that "While coach Johnson is an excellent addition to our team, Bobby Bowden is still the head coach, for as long as he wants the job."

    BCS News

The BCS Committee announced today that they have no plans for a playoff, but are willing to consider a "plus one" system.

Many coaches have been petitioning for a playoff, but it doesn't appear it will happen.

In other NCAA football news, there have been several rule changes, including a moving clock to shorten games.

Coach Johnson had this to say as he was annouced as a new member of the Florida State family. "Im grateful for the opportunity to coach at such a terrific university and with perhaps the greatest coach the game has seen in Coach Bowden. Looking at the team, the challenge will be gettin what amounts to a group of younger players to play consistently and play smarter. The talent is there, but as is the case with all young players, keeping their heads in the game for the full 60 minutes is a challenge. I think we can do that here, this year. With some of the senior leadership we have, as well as the playmakers, this team has a chance to be one of the most exciting in the nation. That being said, we are looking to re-establish the present and get to a championship level, and re-energize this proud school, the tradition of excellence at Florida State. I have no doubt that we have the talent and desire to life that crystal football again."

The media will be quick to point out that Bowden’s team has been on a bit of a downhill slide lately. A few years ago they were just coming off a National Championship win, and now, before anyone could realize, they are coming off an 8-5 season. Granted, they won the ACC last year, but they backed into it, more a result of a poor ACC than anything else. Many feel that the Noles have slipped in years past, that Bowden cant recruit or coach like he used to. Many say that the game has passed him by or that there is so much exposure that FSU has lost its advantage in bringing in recruits from not only its pipeline states of Florida and Georgia, but nationally also. Bowden, and his staff, publicly states that this isnt true, and he is more dedicated than ever to his team and the university.

The inability to beat rivals and win home games have killed the Seminoles as of late. Doak Campbell Stadium used to supply a great advantage as it provided the home crowd noise and instilled fear in their opponents, but with key home losses in the last few years, the mystique of Doak is slowing fading away. While Florida and Miami have been beatable for the Noles, they lose games they should win to teams like North Carolina, Clemson and NC State. Alot of the blame for losing was placed on the offensive coordinator, who was let go to make room for Coach Johnson. The key to Florida State's success is discovering the formula that worked in the 90's; great offense, both in the air and on the ground, smothering defense, and keeping special teams off the field.

As they gear up for the season, FSU has an eye on the ACC championship again, and look to attain another National Championship. The new hire, combined with the talent on the team has everyone thinking big early on. Will coach Johnson deliver? The Seminoles appear poised to take the next step, and will begin by running through the august drills. This includes red-shirting players, fine tuning their schedule, and a look forward to the preseason Top 25 and Heisman Hopefuls. Look for more details on the Noles and their upcoming season as it gets closer.

Note: If i forgot something, or if you want to see something or know something about my dynasty, let me know. Also, i apologize for the lack of colors and graphics, but im new to HTML and dont have a whole lot of time to be real creative with work and what not. Hope you enjoy.

Re: 'Noles Return To Glory (PS2 - NCAA 07 Dynasty)

    Florida State Seminoles
    Location: Tallahasse, Florida
    Offense Playbook: Balanced
    Defense Playbook: Multiple
    Prestige : 6 stars
Rival School: University of Florida and University of Miami
    Colors: Garnet and Gold

Rosters – I wish I could remember where I got the names from (sorry!)
    Skill Level - Heisman
9 minute quarters (may switch between 8 and 10 depending on number of play issues and actual game time)
    HFA – on

    Sliders

    Offense
    QB Acc – 35/40
    Pass Block – 55/55
    Wr Catch – 50/50
    RB Ability – 60/60
    Run Block – 10/40

    Defense
    Awareness – 70/85
    Knockdown – 80/80
    Interception – 15/0
    Break Block – 65/55
    Tackling – 50/55

    Special Teams
    FG Length – 50/0
    FG Accuracy – 0/0
    Punt Length – 45/50
    Punt Accuracy – 25/10
    Kickoff Length – 55/50

Note: Sliders are geared towards my personal skill level and style of play, meaning i like to have the defensive games between two good teams, but allow for the "barnburners" between two great offenses. I also tried to replicate FSU's struggle to run the ball while reducing the number of fumbles.

General Settings: No money plays, no re-starts, Sim all games not involving FSU, recruit 12 players in-season, and allocate points with no more than 15 to one recruit until some get eliminated. This is a "straight" dynasty, so i wont be pulling any fast ones, or trying to find a way around recruiting or gameplay to my advantage. I play a straight style, running and passing, utilizing subs and packages and trying to "re-create" the FSU team for this first year. After year 1, i may alter philosophies to match personnel, as you would in the real games and seasons. I'll make any notes as to great game scores and dynasty records (i cleared all those out before i started, so i have a clean slate.)

Re: 'Noles Return To Glory (PS2 - NCAA 07 Dynasty)

      Rosters

      Bold = starter
      Red type = redshirt

      Offense

      Quarterbacks
      Drew Weatherford – So (RS) – 85 – ACC 2nd Team
      Xavier Lee – So (RS) – 80
      Christian Ponder – Fr – 74
      D’Vontrey Richardson – Fr – 72

Notes: Second Year starter Weatherford should provide some stability. He’s a better pocket passer, but in the event he goes down Xavier Lee is more of a scrambler. Overall, young QB’s who need more development.

      Halfback
      Lorenzo Booker – Sr (RS) – 88 – Impact Player – Acc 1st Team
      Antone Smith – So – 86
      Marcus Sims – Fr – 82
      Jamaal Edwards – Jr – 82

Notes: Booker has been a disappointment but still has blazing speed (96 Spd). Waiting in the wings is Antone Smith, a fast (96 SPD) back with power and agility. Look for him to steal some carries from Booker.

      Fullback
      Matt Dunham – Fr – 82
      Seddrick Holloway – Fr – 80
      Joe Surratt – JR – 78

Notes: Your average stable of Fullbacks. Dunham has some speed but will primarily be a blocker

      Wide Receivers
      Chris Davis – Sr (RS) – 87
      De’Cody Fagg – Jr – 86
      Greg Carr – So – 86
      Damon McDaniel – Fr – 80
      Richard Goodman – So (RS) – 78
      Joslin Shaw – Jr (RS) – 76
      Rod Owens – So (RS) – 76

Notes: Senior leadership in Davis who is the primary target. Fagg and Carr provide depth with Carr being a 6’6” threat. All have good speed.

      Tight Ends
      Brandon Warren – Fr – 84
      Caz Piurowski – Fr – 82
      Charlie Graham – Fr (RS) – 76

Notes: Have some weapons at Tight End. Warren has good speed (84) for a TE and Caz is a 6’7” beast.

      Tackles
      David Overmyer – Jr (RS) – 85
      Mario Henderson – SR – 84
      Shannon Boatman – Jr – 82
      Daron Rose – Fr – 76

      Notes: Decent blockers, nothing special

      Guards
      Cory Niblock – Sr (RS) – 90 – ACC 1st Team – Offensive Captain
      Jacky Claude – Jr – 78
      Matt Hardrick – Fr – 78
      Geoff Berniard – So (RS) – 74
      Evan Bellamy – Fr – 72

Notes: See above. Niblock is solid, but the rest are average at best.

      Center
      John Frady – Jr (RS) – 82
      Dumaka Atkins – So (RS) – 80

Notes: Nothing outstanding about these guys, but they get the job done.

      Defense

      Defensive Ends
      Alex Boston – Jr (RS) – 88
      Darrell Burston – Sr (RS) – 85
      Everette Brown – Fr (RS) – 84
      Neefy Moffett – So – 82
      Justin Mincey – Fr – 78
      D.J. Norris – Jr (RS) – 76

Notes: Solid group of ends, with good depth for years ahead. Boston is a threat to control the line at any time.

      Defensive Tackles
      Andre Fluellen – Jr (RS) – 90 – ACC 2nd Team
      Paul Griffin – Jr – 85
      Aaron Jones – So (RS) – 82
      Kendrick Stewart – Fr (RS) – 80
      Emmanuel Dunbar – So – 80
      Letroy Guion – So – 80
      Ryan McMahon – Fr – 78

Notes: Fluellen and Griffin combine to be an above average combo in the middle. Good at rushing the passer, but weak in stopping the run

      Outside Linebackers
      Lawrence Timmons – JR – 88 – Impact Player
      Geno Hayes – So – 84
      Marcus Ball – Fr – 78
      Recardo Wright – Fr – 76
      Toddrick Verdell – So – 72
      Rodney Gallon – So (RS) – 72

Notes: As usual, FSU has speedy, tough linebackers. Timmons and Hayes combine to form a good duo on the outside. Timmons is a great asset in rushing the passer while Hayes plays all over the field. Ball will also see some playing time as a good asset in years to come

      Middle Linebackers
      Buster Davis – Sr (RS) – 95 – Impact Player – ACC 1st Team – Defensive Captain
      Derek Nicholson – So – 78
      Anthony Kelly – Jr (RS) – 76
      Jae Thaxton – So (RS) – 76

Notes: Buster Davis controls the middle of the field and the defense as a whole. Is all over the place and will be blitzing as well as playing coverage. An outstanding player, but has little depth behind him.

      Cornerbacks
      Tony Carter – So (RS) – 82
      J.R. Bryant – JR – 82
      Michael Ray Garvin – So – 78
      Jamie Robinson – Fr (RS) – 70
      Patrick Robinson – Fr – 70

Notes: A below average set of corners. Carter and Garvin have some speed but lack the height and awareness to be threats in press coverage. As a result, a lot of zone is played.

      Free Safeties
      Roger Williams – Jr (RS) – 84
      Anthony Leon – Fr – 80
      Darius McClure – So (RS) – 76

Notes: Williams has proven to be a liability. Not as fast or as dominant as he should be. Leon will steal some snaps as he is a tall, hard hitting safety in the making.

      Strong Safety
      Myron Rolle – Fr – 87
      Anthony Houllis – Jr (RS) – 82
      Mister Alexander – Fr – 70

Notes: Rolle is the #1 recruit in the country and looks to play immediately. Has all the necessary tools.

      Special Teams

      Kicker
      Gary Cismesia – Jr – 82

Notes: Not a star, but can get the job done. Range is out to about 48 yards.

      Punter
      Graham Gano – So – 70

Notes: Lacks leg strength and accuracy, not much of an asset

Season Preview for the 2006 Florida State Seminoles

(Before I start, ill credit “theaub” for his format. While this may not be exactly like his, I would be lying if I said I wasn’t borrowing some of his formatting ideas. Just wanna give credit where it is due.)

                  Offense

The Florida State offense comes in with the same designation it has in years past. Full of potential and explosiveness, but does it have the ability to let it loose and become a powerhouse as it once was. The Offense is led by a Red shirt Sophomore QB in Drew Weatherford. He set ACC Rookie Records with 18 TD passes but countered that with 18 Interceptions and seemed to wear down as the year went on. He has a dynamic back up in Xavier Lee that, while he lacks the polish necessary to be a dominant player at all times, he makes up for with his quickness and cannon of an arm.

The backfield is full of speed and look for the Noles offense to try and utilize this speed. Both Booker and Smith will get carries and have the opportunity to line up in the slot in certain packages.

The receivers must step up and help a young O-line and QB. With a Senior in Davis and a Junior in Fagg, they have the experience to be troublesome for opposing defenses. They also have reliable and future stars in their backups, but again, lack consistency. Dropped passes have plagued the Noles in years past.

The O-line looks to be porous and could potentially be a problem.

The offense should be able to utilize some special packages to their advantage with either speed (Booker/Smith) or size (6’6” Carr) in the slot at times. Many fans believe the offensive philosophy is what is holding FSU back. For this year, it will stay the same, a balanced playbook. But they do have an eye to going to the spread offense to resurrect memories of the mid 90’s Noles with Charlie Ward and Warrick Dunn.

Player who must deliver: Lorenzo Booker – as the starting running back, it all starts with him. If he cant find holes and break tackles, our passing game wont have a chance

Player who must improve: Drew Weatherford – He isn’t a freshman anymore, and must learn from his mistakes. Interceptions and unnecessary sacks aren’t tolerated. He must be more of a leader

Role player expected to produce: Antone Smith – as the backup running back, as well as kick/punt returner, he will get plenty of touches. Look for Smith to become an integral part of the team

Freshman expected to contribute: Damon McDaniel – Luckily, FSU doesn’t have any starting Freshmen, but McDaniel is the 4th receiver and will be playing in certain packages.

Stat of the preseason: 2 – That’s the number of starters FSU will lose after this year. Look for this group to learn and grow together.

Re: 'Noles Return To Glory (PS2 - NCAA 07 Dynasty)

                    Defense

The Defensive unit as a whole is filled with present and future playmakers. As always, speed is preached over power and this defense doesn’t lack in either area. For much of the Seminoles history, it is the offense that has drawn much of the attention, but in years past, the defense has come into their own, and has earned a reputation of being quick, nasty, and able to deliver a stop when needed.

The defense will use a greater number of players than its offense in order to keep everyone fresh. They run out of the multiple D set, utilizing the 4-3, 3-4, 4-6,5-2, Nickel, Dime and Quarter. They will blitz, play man and zone, and incorporate any means of attacking the offense that is possible. While no one will admit it publicly, in the defensive huddle, they know if they want to win the game, it rests on the defense’s shoulders, not in the offense’s hands.

The D-line is solid and has one or two potential NFL players. Most of the damage will be done from the edge by both defensive ends. Look for them to create problems for all teams and produce a number of sacks, hurries and interceptions. The middle of the line is solid, but could use more size. Stopping the run could be a problem for this team as they lack the big run stuffer that some teams have. Not a lot of twists or stunts are done and the D-line is rarely asked to drop back in coverage.

The linebackers are full of superstars, guys that could play in the NFL right now. In the middle is the defensive captain, and leader of the team, Buster Davis. He has the speed to play sideline to sideline, blitz, and run with tight ends and some receivers. While a bit undersized, he plays as a dominant force. There isn’t any play that he cant make for the team. On the outside are two speedsters who look to run down any and all running backs. They are still young and lack some awareness and coverage skills, but are asked to play more zone than man.

The secondary could be a problem. The corners are undersized and young, but fast. They can make up ground, but don’t have the technique necessary to play man to man. Look for Mickey Andrews (the defensive coordinator) to dial up a lot of zone plays. The safeties play in tandem, with the Freshmen phenom Myron Rolle as the rover (strong safety) and Roger Williams and Anthony Leon (Freshmen) playing free safety.

The problem concerning the defense is size, and endurance. As mentioned, you will see a lot of subs to keep guys fresh, but if the defense has a weakness, it is the tendency to get run over and wear down against teams with good running backs.

Player who must deliver: Buster Davis – without him, this defense would be in shambles. He is the obvious choice for a team MVP, and deservedly so. As he goes, so goes the team

Player who must improve: (Tie) Andre Fluellen/Tony Carter – Fluellen is the defensive tackle tasked with stopping the run. If he gets pushed aside, look for FSU to bring more guys into the box. Carter is the #1 CB and must be able to at least slow down the opposing teams number 1 receiver. If he cant do this, its gunna be a long season.

Role player expected to produce: Defensive Subs – if they cant provide some rest and relief to the starters, the starters will get worn down.

Freshman expected to contribute: Anthony Leon – he could start now, but lacks a bit of awareness and composure. He is featured in 2-3 defensive packages and must be able to take the reigns over from Roger Williams.

Stat of the preseason - 17 – number of players expected to see significant time on the defensive side of the ball.

                    Special Teams

Always a sore spot for FSU fans, this year doesn’t look to be much better. The kicking game will be average, but wont be able to provide anything significant. The return game is in much better shape and could be a bright spot this year.

The kicker, Cismesia, swears he isn’t affected by FSU ghosts of the past. He came to prove that FSU kickers can be clutch. He has been anything but that. He has decent range, out to 48 yards, and with a new kicking system (stupid analog) he should be more accurate than years past.

The punter however is nothing special. Should only average about 38-40 yards per punt, cant directional kick and has little to no touch when aiming for the corner. What could be a weapon is now a liability.

The return game features Antone Smith on both kickoffs and punts. This is one way FSU uses to get the ball in the hands of what could be a sensational weapon. With great speed (96), great agility (96) and high strength and broken tackle ability, he is a tough guy to bring down.

The gameplan for the kicking team is, keep them off the field and give our return guys one block and a chance. Its safe to say anything is possible with the special teams this year.

                      Florida State Schedule Preview

Florida State has a schedule that is heavy on rivals and opens and closes with two of the more heated games in college football. Top to bottom it ranks as a schedule somewhere in the middle as far as toughness goes. Officially rated a “B” by the analysts, it features some tough match-ups on paper, and even tougher match-ups on the field. The schedule features games against all of its main rivals, with two of them being away (Miami and N.C. State). It has several prime time games and look to make an early splash with games against two ranked teams early on. The problem games appear to be at Miami, at NC State (more on this later) and Florida at home. They face a total of 3 ranked teams but have several teams on the docket that will provide a stiff test for this young Noles team. The hopes are high in Tallahassee and fans know if they can get by Miami and Clemson early, that there is potential for a special season. There are a few road blocks though

                      - The N.C. State game poses a problem for several reasons. It’s a rivalry game, its away, and its Thursday night. FSU seems to have problems winning on Thursday nights. This game could make or break the season.

                      - Florida is always tough, and this looks like year they could win it all. This game may determine who plays for the title if all goes according to plan

                      - Any game against a running team, and there are several (Troy, Clemson, N.C. State, Rice, Wake Forest, Maryland).

The schedule sets up favorably with a good stretch of games at home late in the season as FSU is hopefully making a push towards a BCS bowl. There isn’t room for any letdown this season, and the schedule provides none.

Anticipation Builds as the Seasons Kicks-Off

Tallahassee, Fl – Hopes are high, flags are flying, and fans of college football everywhere are about to be glued to their seats as the 2006 NCAA season begins. This is the one time of year where everyone is on a level playing field. Everyone believes their team has what it takes to win it all and are looking forward to their team’s first game. Each school has the fight song's blaring, the mascots running around town, and the coaches offering up bland statements about how you can only look to your next opponent. With so many story lines to choose from, here are the prominent ones nationally.

                        - Can Ohio State run the table with the wizardry of Troy Smith

                        - Can Brady Quinn be a big game QB

                        - Will anyone survive in the SEC

Locally, Tallahassee is abuzz with hopes of another Florida State championship. While the season ended in a disappointing fashion last year, the ‘Noles did win the ACC. They hope to build on that and play for the National Championship in Arizona at year end.

With Miami looking ahead though, fans are quick to note that this game could be the difference in a great or average season. The fans of FSU have adopted a more pessimistic view of their teams first game, many praying that it doesn’t come down to kicking as it has in years past.

The team leaves to travel in a few short days, and rumors are the team looks crisp in practice. Normally open to observers, the new coaching staff, with permission of Bowden, closed practice to any observers, so the team could “focus and prepare for the start of a new era in Florida State football.”

Anticipation has held us long enough, and its about that time for the action to start. What will this year bring? A title? Another close finish? A new star? There isn’t a lot we know at this point, but the city, school, and fans are ready for an exciting year. Many are proclaiming that this is the year they return to dominance, while others are predicting an above average season.

While we may not know what the team looks like at this point, one thing is for certain, as the season kicks off, there will be plenty to watch for every fan out there.

Florida State, Miami.....two bitter rivals. They have produced many classics over the years, and unfortunately, most of them were Miami victories. Wide Right, Wide Right II, Wide Left......so many heartbreaks for Bowden's squad. FSU broke through last year and won a defensive battle in Tallahassee and look to continue onto a streak of their own when they travel down to the Orange Bowl for the game.

Not only is this a rivalry game, but its also a conference game. The winner of this game has a leg up in the conference race that will propel one team to the BCS. This game has everything you could want....rivals, history, conference implications, and a national spotlight.

                          Miami
To win, Miami must be able to establish a running game and have their O-Line play well. Their weakness is in the trenches on offense and they must establish dominance there to have a chance. In the passing game they must get Greg Olsen, the great tight end, involved.

On defense, if they can rattle Weatherford early and shut down the run game, it will make it very tough for the 'Noles to walk away a winner.

                          Florida State
FSU must establish the run and force turnovers to win. Playing in a hostile stadium against a great defense is never easy. Look for Florida State to pound the ball early and see what happens. The O-Line will have to open some holse and provide Weatherford some protection if they want to sustain any drives.

On defense, its simple, pressure the QB. If pressured, Kyle Wright becomes average at best. No real threats at receiver with Ryan Moore suspended. The focus falls on Greg Olsen, the big target at tight end. As their go to impact receiver, look for him to be shadowed tightly by a LB and a DB most the time.

All aspects of the team will have to be ready to go, as Miami is never an easy victory.

And with that, lets kick off the 2006 season.

                            Defense smothers 'Canes

The offense wasn’t impressive, but got the job done as the Seminoles outlasted the Hurricanes of Miami. A game on the defensive side proved FSU to be the stingier defense, as they led their team to a 23-13 victory.

Geno Hayes led Florida State racking up two forced fumbles to headline a defense that dominated the game, while Weatherford and the offense had a below average showing that amounted to just enough to secure the win. Miami's offense struggled all game in the face of pressure and couldn’t get anything going until late in the game. They looked completely rattled in front of the Orange Bowl crowd, even drawing boos late in the 4th quarter as passes were dropped.

Most of the scoring was done in the 2nd quarter with an 8 yard TD run by Smith and a 3 yd strike from Weatherford to Carr that put Florida State up for good. Miami joined the game late with 2 TD passes to Leggett, but the FSU defense proved to be too much. The two headed backfield for Booker and Smith appeared to be the difference, with both contributing to the team's offense.

Defense proves they’re for real, Miami doesn’t

Tallahassee, Fl - Florida State opened up the season with a convincing 23-13 win over in-state rival Miami. Many “experts” had this game predicted as a low scoring defensive battle, and they were half right, as Miami seemed lost on a chilly night in South Florida. It looked like rain might muddy up this contest, but it never did start. Instead, it was a cloudy day, which many ‘Canes fans would soon say reflected their team’s chance of winning. Many fans braved the dreary weather, but left just after halftime to a disappointing show by the Hurricanes.

Florida State’s defense dominated the game early, allowing few opportunities for Miami to get on track. The game started out slow with both Florida State and Miami being held to zero points and only 18 combined yards of offense in the first quarter, in what amounted to a lot of face time for each punter. Each team was trying to feel out the other team and not make any crucial mistakes.

                              Possible Week 1 Upset

Oklahoma, ranked #8 in the country, appears to be on the way to losing their opener to UAB. Trailing late in the second half, Oklahoma is trying to mount a comeback and pull out the win. UAB has led most the game and is trying desperately to hang on. Check back later for the final score.

Most of the other top 25 teams appear to be on their way to easy victories. Check the next update for more information on who won, who lost, and who is making their case for the Heisman Trophy

The scoring finally picked up about a minute into the second quarter. Florida State sustained a drive, mixing the run and pass to get down to the Miami 19 yard line, but had to settle for a 36 yard Cismesia field goal to go up 3-0.

The ensuing kickoff was sent down to Miami’s return man, who was stripped by Geno Hayes and recovered at the Miami 4 yard line by Hayes. Florida State recorded a 1 yard gain, followed by a false start to set up 2nd and goal from the 8. Trying to capitalize on the situation, Coach Johnson suggested that Antone Smith, a stronger, tougher runner be brought in to replace Booker. Coach Bowden agreed and they brought Smith in. What resulted made both coaches look like geniuses. FSU ran a toss to the right to Smith who ripped off one of the better 8 yard runs, juking left, followed by a back juke and a stiff arm at the 2 to rumble into the end zone. 8 yards and about 4 seconds proved that this kid was the future at running back.

The defense kept the pressure on Wright and Miami as they were blitzing from all angles. Trying to confuse Miami’s offense, they kept subs coming in and out and rotated between formations and schemes to keep them guessing. What took place in the first half was a product of the ever changing face of the defense. While Florida State’s defense didn’t intercept any passes, they had 5 sacks of Wright, 3 by Burston in the first half to keep the Miami team from ever mounting a serious threat.

After several punts, Florida State again engineered a long drive down to the Miami 3 where Weatherford hooked up with Greg Carr on a short drag route for a 3 yard TD pass on 3rd and goal to go up 17-0. The offensive line did a particularly good job on this play, allowing Weatherford time to wait as Carr came all the way across the field.

Miami fumbled their next possession, which set up FSU at the 34. They drove down to the 15, but Weatherford was picked off on an acrobatic, diving interception by Gooden at the 12. Miami couldn’t get anything going, and both teams headed for half. The halftime stats would show Miami had 5 yards of total offense, a far cry from what they hoped to accomplish.

Another Cismesia Field goal sent the score to 20-0, and finally Miami started knocking on the door. Wright would find Lance Leggett deep to get Miami inside the FSU 30, but this was followed by an incomplete pass, a tipped pass and a sack/strip by freshmen phenom Rolle (recovered by Charlie Jones) and Miami would squander that chance and have to punt.

Cismesia would add to the scoring with another chip shot field goal to go to 23-0. With about 8 min left in the game, FSU had the ball and started running clock. Antone Smith fumbled setting up a quick 44 yard TD strike from Wright to Leggett, with the two point conversion failing.
After a few punts, Miami would strike again with 1:05 left, with Wright and Leggett again producing a TD. This would send the game to 23-13, and after a failed onside kick, Florida State would take a knee to preserve the victory over their rival.

                              Players of the Game
FSU: Geno Hayes - 3 Tackles, 2 Forced Fumbles
                              Miami: Lance Leggett - 4 catches for 155 yards, 2 TD's

Play of the Game: With the score at 3-0, Antone Smith made a remarkable 8 yard run to score, pushing the score to 10-0.

Turning Point: After a 36 yard Cismesia field goal, Miami returner, Terrell Walden, fumbles to set up a Smith TD run.

It Was Over When: Miami's offense took the field. One of the worst 1st half performances in recent memory.

Key Stat/Number: Without Leggett's two TD catches, the Miami passing game had under 50 yards of passing offense and 20 yards of total offense.

The win sends Florida State to the top of the ACC and gives them a “quality win” early in the season. Coach Johnson had this to say after the game. “I really felt that our defense carried us in this game. They played outstanding, except for one blown coverage late in the game. Trust me, we will get that worked out before next week. Our offense was feast or famine. We moved the ball well, but once we got inside the 20, we had a hard time moving the ball. Weatherford looked like a sophomore out there, which he is. Our goal is to get him looking like a Senior in a few weeks. But, a win’s a win, and im happy to say my first game with the team ended in a win, and im extremely happy that it came against Miami down in the Orange Bowl. This is what Florida State is about, winning big games.”

Florida State now has a short week to prepare for Troy, who will come into Doak Campbell Stadium and try to defeat the ‘Noles.
