            Week 2 Preview

            Week 2 Preview

            National Broadcast Games
            Seminole Sayings......
Coach Johnson again announced this week that practice would be closed. He cited FSU's lack of killer instinct in the past few years and does not want his players getting cocky after a week 1 win.

Also, an uncomfirmed report that Xavier Lee could be seeing some playing time in this game. Make sure to tune in to see how the 'Noles preparation will affect them.

            Arizona at #5 LSU
            Minnesota at #22 Cal
            #21 Clemson at Boston College
            #14 Georgia at South Carolina
#11 Penn State at #3 Notre Dame
            UCF at #6 Florida
#1 Ohio State at #2 Texas *Game of the Week*
#19 Virginia Tech at North Carolina

            Game Preview
            Troy (1-0)at #10 Florida State (1-0)
Troy comes into Doak Campbell stadium ranked 113th in the nation and doesnt look to have the speed or talent to match up with the Seminoles. Florida State is coming off a huge win and could be looking ahead to next week's game against Clemson. But for all intensive purposes, this game is a tune up for the 'Noles. Look for their second stringers to get extended playing time as not only do they want to rest their starters, but this game shouldnt be close. Florida State has the edge in every category from top to bottom.

Keys to Victory for Troy:Troy must force turnovers. One thing they do have going from them is scoring offense, ranked 14th in the nation at 50 points a game. They should try and run the ball (ranked 16th in nation) and control the clock and wear down Florida State.

Keys to victory for Florida State: This game should be put away by mid 3rd quarter at the latest. Look for Weatherford to throw all over Troy with FSU's speed on both sides of the ball being too much. The defense could be susceptible to the run, but look for a ton of blitzes to force turnovers from an inferior offense. Both the first and second team players should get on the field, which will allow evaluation of all talent on the team.

              Troy surrenders under air assault

Troy's ground game was no match for the air attack for the Seminoles. Scoring early and often, Florida State put a pounding on the Trojans. Racking up 17 early points, FSU had it in cruise control for most of the game. They were able to move the ball at will, on the ground or in the air and with the defense playing a perfect first quarter, there wasnt much left to do.

Troy did put up a fight and managed to rally right before half, but Florida State just had too many weapons. Weatherford found an early rhythmn, throwing for 5 TD's to 5 different targets. He had a couple hiccups late in the game, but otherwise played solid. The running game didnt produce big numbers, but was effective enough to keep the safeties and linebackers playing honest football.

The defense was all over Troy from the start. They did nothing but bring pressure which confused and overwhelmed the offense. 9 sacks, an interception, several forced fumbles, the defense is beginning to look like a wrecking crew, and their star player, Buster Davis hasnt even started to show what makes him special. The second team didnt get as much face time as the coaches wanted, but this was a nice victory before facing Clemson.

                Speed Kills, Just Ask Troy

Tallahassee, Fl - You can't coach speed or so goes the cliche. That was bad news for those on the Trojans sideline as they watched their team mates get beat over and over again in a rout against Florida State. Troy knew it had to play perfectly if it wanted any chance, and unfortunately, they lost any chance of that 50 seconds into the game. With the home crowd urging them on, FSU opened up on a nice controlled drive with a good mix of pass and run. On a 2nd down and 7 from their own 48, Weatherford dropped back and found a wide open Damon McDaniel streaking down the sideline. This would be McDaniel's first TD and put Florida State up 7-0 less than a minute into the game.

After a drive of Troy's that stalled, Florida State again marched down the field, this drive ending with a 4 yard screen pass to De'Cody Fagg, pushing the score to 14-0. Things didnt get any better for Troy as on their first play from scrimmage after the TD, Haugabook dropped back and found a wide open Lawrence Timmons. The bad news is Timmons plays linebacker for Florida State. Timmons took it to the 3, but FSU couldnt punch it in, settling for a 33 yd FG.

                Top 25 News
In what many have dubbed the game of the year, Texas and Ohio State are late in their game with the Buckeyes up a few points with about 5 minutes left. The winner of this game has the clear track to the # 1 ranking and control of their championship destiny.

A few upsets in week 2, including some close calls for perennial contenders.....

The ensuing kickoff resulted in a fumble recovered by freshman Anthony Leon on the Troy 17. The 'Noles walked it down the the 4 and Weatherford then hooked up on a beautiful fade route to Chris Davis. The next drive for Troy was like all the others, except this time they caught a break. On a 3rd and long from about midfield, Haugabook lofted a duck into the secondary. Myron Rolle, Florida State's superstar in the making, glided over to make the interception, but couldnt get the handle on it, tipping it to the Troy wide receiver, who took it to the 7 before being caught. Cauttouse would rumble the remaining 7 yards, narrowing the gap to 24-6 after a missed two point conversion.

Rolle would again play a part in the next series, as he was beat on a 12 yard TD score to make the score 24-13 going into half time.

As the second half opened, Florida State stopped Troy, and marched down the field. They had a 1st and goal from the 9, and couldnt push it into the end zone, bringing up a 4th and goal from the 1. Coach Bowden decided to go for it, trying to put the game away, or if they didnt get it, put Troy in an impossible decision. The defense wouldnt be needed, as Weatherford hooked up with Carr on a 1 yard TD strike to make it 31-13.

Troy took the next kickoff to the 19, had a holding penalty push them back to the 9, and lined up for their next play. Coach Johnson would reveal after the game that he lit into Rolle. "I told him that Florida State players done make those mistakes. It doesnt matter who we're playing, you have to want it, have to be ready for anything. I didnt put him down, I tried to motivate him." That was all the young phenom would need, as on the next play, he barrelled into the backfield and sacked Haugabook, stripping it in the process. Darrell Burston would fall on it in the end zone, resulting in a 38-13 lead.

FSU would tack on another field goal before sending in their second team defense. Coach Johnson wanted to see more of his starting offense, so he left them out there. They marched down to the 3, where Weatherford made one of those decisions that keeps him from being an elite quarterback. He threw into double coverage and had it picked off and returned 97 yards for a TD.

To make matters worse, FSU went 3 and out on their next drive, and Troy marched it down the field on the 2nd team defense and scored on a short TD pass, making it 41-27. All of the first teamers were put back in and in two plays, Weatherford rebounded, connecting with Brandon Warren for a 45 yard TD pass.

Troy would make a few last attempts, but could get nothing going. As they punted with 1:21 left, the plan was to run the clock out. FSU did just that on the first two plays and had a 3rd and 1. They tossed it to Smith, who was stopped short. The Troy player was so pleased that he taunted the 'Noles, resulting in a personal foul and a 1st down.

Coach Johnson and Bowden called a timeout and had a discussion. Bowden wanted to kneel and close it out, but Johnson had other ideas. He wanted to show them that no one celebrates on Doak Campbell, especially being down 21 points. He told Weatherford to hand it off to Smith and let him do the rest. Smith obliged and took it 14 yards, to end the game with a score of 55-27.

                Players of the Game
                FSU: Alex Boston - 4 tackles (3 for loss) - 2 sacks
Troy: Elbert Mack - 3 tackles, 1 Int, 1 TD

Play of the Game: 50 seconds into the game, Weatherford launches a pass for true freshman Damon McDaniel, who hauls it in for his first collegiate touchdown.

Turning Point: Early in the second half, nursing a 24-13 lead, Florida State decides to go for it on 4th and goal from the 1. They convert, and never look back.

It Was Over When: The schedule was released. Troy doesnt belong in the same sentence as Florida State.

Key Stat/Number: 9 sacks. Troy was under pressure all day, and even when they did find a way to beat the blitz, they couldnt stop FSU on the other side of the ball.

After the game, the coaches acknowledged that their first team defense was playing pretty good and that the offense seemed to be headed in the right direction. Coach Bowden said "We still have a few things to work on, but this young team is slowly coming together. We should have a good test next week with Clemson coming to town. That should be a good one dadgumit." Coach Johnson wanted to discuss other things after the game. "For any player to celebrate like that on our field, when they are getting their butts whooped is beyond me. He's lucky i wasnt out there, becuase i dont think i wouldve scored the TD, i think i wuldve run right after him and plowed him over." He changed gears and spoke about how he has helped the team come alive. "No disrespect to Coach Bowden, but i feel i bring an energy to this team. Just look at Myron......he was struggling today, and i lit a fire under him. Its nice to see players respond to you."

The win makes Florida State 2-0 as they head into an ACC game. The next test should be a bit tougher as the 'Noles welcome Tommy Bowden and the Clemson Tigers into Doak Campbell Stadium for the "Bowden Bowl".

                      Week 3 Pre-Game Article

Father looks to beat son.....in football

Tallahassee, Fl - In what has become an annual tradition, not only in the ACC, but in the Bowden family, Tommy will take his Clemson Tiger team and head down to Tallahassee to face his dad, Bobby and the Seminoles of Florida State. Going on its 7th year, the game has lost a little bit of its individuality, but should still be interesting as Clemson is ranked #20 in the nation at 2-0, while Poppa Bowden sits at #10, with a record of 2-0. This early season game will have a big impact on the ACC picture and could have a say in the National Championship picture.

Both teams come in with offenses that seem to be finding their groove. Florida State boasts an all-around attack with several weapons. Drew Weatherford has started to mature and with weapons like Booker and Smith in the backfield, they look to distribute the ball and keep Clemson on their heels. Clemson has its own 2 headed monster in the backfield, with James Davis, a bruising, tough runner being backed up by former high school sprint champion C.J. Spiller. This game could be very high scoring with the amount of firepower on the field.

Both defenses have shown flashes of brilliance, and are saying they haven’t hit their stride. This is more apparent on the Florida State side as they are continually one of the best defenses in college football. The last two games haven’t shown it, but this team looks to be as solid up front as any other FSU team. Buster Davis hasn’t made much of an impact in a slow start to his senior season. Look for him to really start to turn it on as he gets into the flow of the season. Myron Rolle has been playing well for Florida State. He has had a few lapses, but he is a freshman and is definitely a threat in the secondary to drop into coverage or bring the heat on the quarterback.

Both Bowden coaches have been saying that their family wont provide a distraction, that its just another football game, but Coach Johnson says otherwise. “I know Coach Bowden will never come out and say it, but he wants this one. It kills him inside to lose to anyone, but to lose to an ACC team, and to your son? No father takes losing well. We’re getting our boys ready to come out fired up and play a full 60 minutes.”

Any Top 25 showdown is good, but rest assured, a game with ACC, National Championship, and family repercussions will add something extra to the game.

De'Cody Fagg will not start in this weeks showdown against Clemson. The Junior Receiver has been suspended for 2 quarters for excessive lateness to class. He will be allowed to come into the game after halftime.

Coach Johnson said "They are here to be students first, and De'Cody didnt feel the need to show up to class, so we dont feel the need to start him. He will get that message, i hope." Fagg had no comment on the matter.

In his place will be sophomore receiver Carr, who has been an excellent third receiver.

                        Game Preview:

#20 Clemson at #10 Florida State

"Bowden Bowl" is about to get kickoff in what should be a great clash between offensive teams. Clemson comes in ranked 8th in the nation in scoring (47.5 ppg) and total offense ranked 3rd at 552 yards per game. Both teams are ranked in the top 50 in every category, which should translate into a great game.

                        Keys to Victory for Clemson:
Clemson must use all of its offensive tools to win this game. Will Proctor has thrown for 676 yards in 2 games with 8 TD's to 1 Int. Spiller and Davis both have over 200 yards this year to complement their offense. Their leading receiver is Chansi Stuckey, their impact wide receiver. With all these weapons, they have a good chance to win.

Keys to Victory for Florida State:
Florida State must defend their home turf. Their defense has to play their best in order to keep Clemson at bay. Weatherford has to keep playing his best and cant turn the ball over. This game could come down to special teams plays, where Florida State has been solid this year.

Florida State proves it can dominate even the best offenses

In a game that was supposed to be a clash of two dynamic offenses, it was a ball control offense and smothering defense that proved to be the difference. Florida State moved to 3-0 with a great showing on both sides of the ball. The offense wasnt great, but it didnt have to be. In fact, the offense played a management game. They didnt turn the ball over, they didnt commit bad penalties, they just marched down the field and took care of business.

Clemson looked slow all game, and never got adjusted to the Doak Campbell crowd and could never put that high octane offense into 2nd gear. Except for a brief flash by James Davis, the Clemson offense looked like the scout offense.

This loss drops Clemson in what they had hoped would be a championship run. Florida State has Rice next week, in what should be a good stat padder before their bye week.

Poppa Bowden takes son to the woodshed

Tallahassee, Fl - A matchup between ACC schools, Top 25 teams, and father and son turned into a education as Bobby Bowden defeated his son, Tommy Bowden, 34-7. Many thought that this would be the year that Clemson would overtake Florida State in the ACC, and Tommy would enjoy a nice season, propelled by a win over his dad, but this year doesnt look like that year.

The game got off to a relatively slow start as both teams played conservative, determined not to make any mistakes. The first quarter almost went by with no scoring. Clemson had an early opportunity, but on a 3rd and 12, cornerback Michael Ray Garvin came out of his nickel position and sacked Proctor, pushing them out of field goal range. The first score of the game came after Buster Davis picked off Proctor and returned it to the Clemson 40. 6 plays later, the 'Noles settled for a 40 yard field goal from Cismesia, who has yet to miss this year.

Florida State's defense kept with the theme of the year and pressured the quarterback through a variety of blitzes and pressures. All totaled, they had 5 sacks in the first half. With the 2nd quarter running down, Clemson faced a 4th down situation.

                            Separation Saturday

With a full docket of games featuring top 25 teams playing each other, the rankings look to be shaken up after this week.

One team in the top 6 will lose, as #4 LSU and #6 Auburn face off, but will any other top ten teams lose? Will the luck of the Irish help them pass the Wolverines? Will Florida beat Rocky Top and the Vols in Tennessee?

With lots of action this week, be sure to check out the updated rankings
They elected to punt and pinned Florida State inside the 25. After a few running plays, and stopping the clock by going out of bounds, Booker ripped off a 15 yard run to get to the FSU 45. On that play, senior receiver Chris Davis was injured, and after more tests, it was determined he would miss the rest of the game.

That left no starting receivers for the remainder of the first half, but both Coach Bowden and Coach Johnson saw this as an opportunity to play som inexperienced guys. They sent out Joslin Shaw, a WR who doesnt see much action. On the first play after Davis' injury, Weatherford looked right, pumped and looked left to see Shaw streaking down the sideline. He threw a bullet to the outside shoulder and Shaw hauled it in for the touchdown, to make the lead 10-0 going into half.

After halftime, FSU started to pound the ball, with Sims, Smith, and Booker all touching the ball on one drive that led to another field goal by Cismesia. With the score 13-0, Clemson's big play running back, James Davis had an answer, and the only score for Clemson all day. In a display of power running, he took off the left tackle, broke 3 tackles, and scored on a 47 yard TD run, to edge it to 13-7.

That was as close as it would get, as on the next drive, Proctor was hurt, and the backup for Clemson, Cullen Harper came in. On his first play in the game, he dropped back and threw it right to Lawrence Timmons for the interception. Booker would knock it home to make it 20-7.

Clemson's next possession ended in a punt, and with one key block and a key cut, Antone Smith showed why he has Florida State fans talking about his potential, as he went 64 yards for the return TD.

As the game was winding down, all the back ups got in, and Sims busted off a huge run. As he came to the sideline, he slapped Smith's hand, who was heading on the field and told him to finish it off. Smith did just that, scoring on a 1 yard TD run to end the game, and the scoring 34-7.

Florida State: Antone Smith - 178 total yards, 1 rush TD, 1 punt return TD

Key Play of the Game: Buster Davis picks off Will Proctor and sets up the first Florida State score.

Turning Point of the Game:With less than a minute left, and no starting receivers on the field, Weatherford goes to Joslin Shaw, a young, inexperienced receiver for a TD just before the half.

It was over when: Antone Smith put the game out of reach with a 64 yard Punt Return for a touchdown.

Key Stat/Number: 0 - How many turnovers the Florida State offense had.

Both coaches were available for a few minutes after the game. Coach Bowden said "I was pleased with our effort. That ole' Antone Smith sure is something special isnt her? Our offense did what they could, our defense put us in great position, and our special teams were flawless. It was sure nice to win, i just hate to do that to Tommy." As he walked away, Coach Johnson was seen sharing some laughs with some players. He stopped by and talked with reporters. "Was nice to get another win here at Florida State. Our fans sure were loud today and helped us, but i tell you what, our team is playing great right now in all aspects. If we play like this, i dont know of any team that can touch us right now."

Florida State has a home game next week against Rice, and should be able to put that one away early. After that is a bye week before a Thursday night game in Raleigh against N.C. State.

                                Week 4 Preview Article

Tallahassee, Fl - As the season continues to roll on, the Florida State Seminoles have the look of a national contender. Their team has been surprisingly balanced on both sides of the ball. The offense has been able to produce points as needed and limited their turnovers. There hasnt been one stand out player on offense, instead settling for 14-16 steady players all across the board. There is no better indication of this than the backfield. Lorenzo Booker came in the starter and has been ready to light up opposing teams, but his carries have been limited to give Antone Smith a chance to carry the ball. What has resulted in fresher legs, less turnovers and confidence that either guy can make waves on this team.

The defense has helped out in a variety of ways. While their coverage skills have been average at best, as noted by their lack of knockdowns and interceptions, their pressure on the QB and the ability to limit big plays has been tremendous. They dont stay on the field long, often causing havoc in the backfield. Their 18+ sacks in the first 3 games has served notice that this defense is aggressive.

This week Florida State has Rice, a doormat at this juncture in the season. Florida State plans on utilizing 1st and 2nd string in an effort to not only keep starters healthy, but in an effort to see who can help contribute. Coach Johnson and Coach Bowden want anyone to be able to step in, in the event of injury, as was the case last week. With Fagg suspended and Davis hurt, Rod Owens and Joslin Shaw stepped in and didnt miss a beat.

FSU should win this game big, and head into a shortened bye week with confidence.
