    Utes Outmuscle Rebels
UNLV Loses Conference Opener at Home

Johnnie Bryant launches a three pointer in Utah’s win.

    1/03/07
Las Vegas, NV (AP) – The Utah Utes knew that in order to defeat UNLV they had to beat the Rebels up on the inside and take advantage of the perimeter oriented Rebels. On Wednesday evening they did just that and came out with a 71-62 victory. Shaun Green pounded UNLV down low all night, scoring 19 points and grabbing 12 boards in the Utes’ victory.

Utah (8-4,1-0) came out and immediately got the Rebels into foul trouble by pounding the ball down low. They led 37-23 at the break and opened the lead to 48-30 early in the second half.

But Kevin Kruger would not let UNLV go away quietly. With Wink Adams having an off night, Kruger stepped up and willed the Rebels back into this one, leading them on a 26-11 run to cut the lead to 59-56 with just 3:20 left. Utah responded by pounding it back down low and getting to the free throw line, where they went 24 of 34 in the game (71%).

UNLV had no answers and dropped their first Montain West game of the year.

Utah shot 46% for the game and UNLV shot 42%. The Rebels struggled from the outside, hitting just 6 of 21. Kruger shot 3 of 7 while the rest of the Rebels went 3 for 14. The Utes also dominated in the paint, outrebounding UNLV 40-25.

The Rebels will now hit the road for games at the nationally ranked Air Force Academy on Saturday evening and at Wyoming next Wednesday.

Thanks for checking in. The game is definitely a challenge for me. I figured that playing with the senior laden Rebels would put me in line to win 20 games, but I need to go 13-5 in the Montain West just to get there. I think that I will probably need to win at least 20 just to get into the postseason.

The sliders that I am using are pretty good. If I play good defense and move the ball offensively, I can win. If I get lazy, I usually end up losing.

#13 Air Force Escapes With a 63-61 Win

Matt McCraw nails the game winning three with just 0.5 seconds left.

              1/06/07
Colorado Springs, CO (AP) – UNLV got a taste of their own medicine on Saturday night at Clune Arena as the 13th ranked Air Force stunned UNLV 63-61 on a game ending three pointer by Matt McCraw.

UNLV (7-9,0-2) led this one all the way, leading by as many as 11 in the first half and ten in the second half.

“This one hurts,” said Coach Janis afterwards. “Our guys played their hearts out tonight. They put in a great defensive effort, but we just fell short. You have to hand it to Air Force, they made the plays down the stretch.”

Down the stretch is when the Air Force (14-2,2-0) took over. Trailing 59-54 late, Dan Nwaelele hit back-to-back threes to put the Falcons up 60-59. UNLV retook the lead on a Gaston Essengue layup with 2:20 left. It would be the last time UNLV would score.

The teams exchanged four possessions, each ending in a defensive stop. Wink Adams missed a three pointer from the top of the arc with :34.1 left to set up the incredible finish. Air Force got the rebound, did not call timeout and it looked like they were trying to get the ball to Nwaelele. But with Wink Adams blanketing him, Matt McCraw decided to launch a deep three over the outstretched arm of Kevin Kruger. He hit nothing but net to give Air Force it’s first lead and to send the Falcon crowd into a frenzy.

Dan Nwaelele led the Falcons with 28 points on 11 of 19 shooting. He scored 22 in the second half when Air Force outscored UNLV 38-31. He and Wink Adams were trading big shots all night. Adams finished with 27 points including five three pointers in the losing effort.

UNLV shot 47% from the floor and 6 of 18 from beyond the arc. Air Force shot 43% and 10 of 24 from beyond the arc and the outrebounded the Rebels 30-26. Air Force was 7 of 7 from the free throw line while UNLV was just 11 of 17.

The Rebels will end their two game road trip on Wednesday evening in Laramie as they take on the Wyoming Cowboys.

                  Another Heartbreaker
Wyoming Pulls Game Out in Closing Seconds

Daaron Brown grabs a huge offensive rebound in the closing seconds.

                  1/10/07
Laramie, WY (AP) – Free throws and rebounding. Those are the two things that UNLV head coach Jim Janis emphasizes at each and every practice. “It may not be sexy, but it gets the job done.”

His words were prophetic on Wednesday evening in Laramie as the Wyoming Cowboys upset the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels 73-71. Daaron Brown pulled down a crucial offensive rebound with 3.5 seconds left and drained both free throws to help propel Wyoming (7-6,1-1) to the upset. Brown pulled down a game high 18 rebounds (9 offensive, 9 defensive) and added 17 points.

The Mountain West’s leading scorer, Brandon Ewing, did his part also. He added 26 points and really carried Wyoming in the first half when he scored 22 of their 37.

For UNLV, another heartbreaking loss. After Brown’s free throws, Kevin Kruger inbounded the ball and pulled up at the elbow, but his game-tying shot bounced off the back of the iron to send UNLV (7-10,0-3) to their third straight loss and fourth in their last five.

Kruger finished with a team high 18 points. Wink Adams added 17 and freshman Marcus Lawrence scored a career high 11 in the loss.

UNLV made just 10 of 21 free throws on the night while Wyoming buried 17 of 19. The Cowboys outrebounded the Rebels 54-16 including 21-6 on the offensive end which led to 18 second chance points.

UNLV will now return home for a meeting on Saturday afternoon with BYU (7-8,0-2).

                    Rebel Yell!
Kruger Nails Game Winning Three to End Losing Streak.

Kevin Kruger makes a game winning three pointer......again!

                    1/13/07
Las Vegas, NV (AP) – UNLV returned home after two gut wrenching road losses and found a way to reverse their fortunes. They looked to their leader, Kevin Kruger and he did not disappoint.

Kruger nailed a three pointer with 0.5 seconds left in regulation time to break a 75-75 tie and send UNLV to their first Mountain West victory on the year. Kruger finished with 18 points and five assists to lead the Rebels back from a ten point second half defecit.

“What can you say about Kevin? He is a leader and when the game is on the line, he steps up. This team relies on him and he comes through.” Coach Janis post game comments following the thrilling win over the Cougars.

BYU trailed 75-73 late, when Lee Cummard drove wildly to the hoop and Gaston Essengue appeared to draw a charge. But the referees ruled it a block and Cummard calmy sank both free throws to tie it with 6.8 seconds left.

That set up Kruger for his last second heroics...again! It was his third game winning shot this season.

Cummard led the Cougars (7-9,0-3) with 16 points. Jimmy Balderson chipped in 15 points and added eight rebounds.

BYU shot 48% from the field while the Rebels shot 42%. The Cougars outrebounded UNLV 38-34, but the Rebels got the best of the offensive glass, grabbing 14.

UNLV will now have the week off before returning to action next Saturday evening as they travel to Fort Worth, Texas to take on TCU.

                          Horned Frogs Crush Rebels 81-63

Shannon Behling pours in three of his game high 22.

Fort Worth, TX (AP) – The Texas Christian Horned Frogs may surprise some teams in the Mountain West this season. They certainly surprised UNLV on Saturday evening as they blew open a close game in the second half to win 81-63. Shannon Behling scored a game high 22 points and Brent Hackett added 17 for TCU.

UNLV (8-11,1-4) led this one 30-29 at the break. It was a back and forth affair until the Horned Frogs went on a 10-0 to take a 62-52 lead with 5:06 left. Kevin Kruger injured his right knee driving to the basket and UNLV never challenged the rest of the way.

Michael Umeh led UNLV with 13 points, while the injured Kevin Kruger scored 12 before leaving the contest. He will be evaluated tomorrow in Las Vegas.

TCU (6-12,3-2) shot 60% from the floor in the contest. They held UNLV to just 43%. The Rebels did connect on 9 of 19 three pointers, but it wasn’t enough. Rebounding again hurt UNLV as the Horned Frogs outrebounded the Rebels 38-21.

UNLV will return home for a game on Tuesday evening against San Diego State.

                              1/23/07 (Tuesday)
Las Vegas, NV (AP) – After Saturday evenings blowout loss to TCU, Coach Jim Janis lamented that his team needed to to a better job of rebounding. Tuesday evening, the Rebels did not heed his advice as they were embarassed at home by the San Diego State Aztecs, 104-75. Brandon Heath led San Diego State with 21 points on nine of 15 shooting.

The Aztecs (11-8,3-3) led only 46-42 at the half despite outrebounding UNLV 22-3. They held a 15-1 advantage on the offensive glass. For the game, SDSU outrebounded the Rebels 43-11 and 20-6 on the offensive end. That led to 28 second chance points and had coach Janis fuming afterwards.

“They ought to be embarassed! We put forth minimal effort tonight and the Aztecs took advantage! We could have lost to a CYO team tonight. I don’t know what this team’s expectations are, but if we continue to play like we have the past two games, we are going to be in for a very long second half of the season.”

The Aztecs outscored Vegas 58-33 in the second half and had plenty of layups as UNLV failed to get back on defense numerous times. San Diego State shot 61% from the floor and made 22 of 25 free throws in the contest.

Wink Adams led the Rebels (8-12,1-5) with 21 points. Wendell White injured his ankle in the second half. It appeared to be pretty serious and he will be evaluated tomorrow.

UNLV will host New Mexico (14-8,4-2) on Saturday afternoon at the Thomas & Mack Center.

UNLV Jumps Out to Big Lead, Holds On

                                1/27/07
Las Vegas, NV (AP) – After starting out their Mountain West schedule by losing five out of six times, sophomore Wink Adams asked to have a closed door, players-only meeting to clear the air. Apparently it worked, as UNLV upset New Mexico on Saturday evening, 62-57 at the Thomas & Mack Center. Wink Adams led all scorers with 22 points, shooting 6 of 10 from beyond the arc.

UNLV (9-12,2-5) led this one from the start and appeared on their way to a blowout victory as they led 37-23 at the break. They would lengthen their lead to as many as 18 in the second half before the Lobos went on a furious late run that was aided by UNLV’s poor free throw shooting. The Rebels shot just 5 of 16 (31%) from the free throw line and was just 1 of 8 late in the game.

New Mexico (14-9,4-3) was led by Tony Danridge who scored 18 points and added three rebounds.

UNLV shot 47% from the field, but converted 9 of 21 from beyond the arc (43%). The Lobos shot 45% from the field and 8 of 15 (53%) from downtown.

The Lobos also made 11 of 12 free throws in the contest. The Rebels outrebounded the Lobos 30-23, a key stat in their recent losing streak.

The Rebels will travel to Colorado Springs on Tuesday evening for a matchup with Colorado State (8-9,3-4).
