Not really that surprising, he's more likely to have a pass that was dropped be reviewed and be reversed to an incomplete pass. That probably didn't make any sense, just like EA challenges.

      Week 5
Rivalry Game - Battle for the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy
      September 29, 2007, 3:30 PM
      Air Force(2-2)[1-1] at Navy(1-3)
      No TV
      Sunny, 71F, 1mph

      Injuries

      MLB C.Sovie 24 Tkl
      DT N.Frazier 1 Sk
      FS J.Deliz 1 INT

      Pregame
Navy won their first game and lost their last 3. I'm surprised to see how well Kaheaku is passing. With some rivalry game jitters, we'd like to really concentrate on limiting the sacks we give up and eliminating interceptions.

With senior CB Garrett Rybak out for at least 2 months, everyone moved up a spot on the depth chart and freshmen PJ Adeji Paul moves into the #4 spot.

      Game Summary

Air Force battle Navy to a 14-14 tie at half time. Both teams showed some life on offense, but neither team could get the upper hand.

Navy FB Adam Ballard opens the scoring with a 27 yard run right up the middle. AF's defense had trouble stopping Ballard all day.

In the 2nd quarter on a 4th and 1 at the goal line, Air Force HB Chad Hall takes an outside toss and gets into the endzone untouched. Coach Tiger was tired of settling for field goals in previous games

The interception bug bit Shaun Carney again. He threw 3 and killed any momentum the AF offense was gaining in the second half.

Navy CB Rashawn King intercepts a Shaun Carney pass in the 4th quarter. AF would not score a single point in the 2nd half.

Navy's triple option attack was too much to handle, Navy scored 17 in the 2nd half to win 31-14.

      AF Stars of the game
TE Travis Dekker, 67 receiving yards and 1 TD from 3 catches. Travis showed some tackle breaking ability on his 44 yard TD pass.
DT Keith Williams, 7 tackles, 3 for loss, and 2 sacks. Despite Keith's numbers, we could not stop Navy on the ground today.

      Postgame
Navy ran the ball 52 times for 235 yards and 3 TDs. We know they are going to run yet we can't stop them. There were just too many broken tackles and too many guys fooled on the triple option. Our defense is brought back to reality after 4 pretty good games to start the year.

Some worry is starting to creep in with Carney. I'm not sure what it is, perhaps the increased pressure of having to throw the ball more than he has ever had to before. We have got to get his interceptions under control or backup Eric Herbort will be seeing the field soon.

We play 2-3 UNLV next week and we have several prospects visiting. UNLV won their only conference game so far this year against Utah in week 4, 45-14.

        Pregame

Both Lee and Kirk pick AF to win, I'm jinxed for sure now. UNLV QB Rocky Hinds will be hard for us to contain, we'll be spying him all day.

We have two decent recruits visiting this week so we need to get this win.

        Game Summary

Air Force missed quite a few chances to take a halftime lead and let UNLV control the game before halftime. Late in the 2nd quarter, UNLV scored 2 unanswered TDs. UNLV lead 14-6 at the half.

Falcon's Sophomore WR Anthony Hemphill drops a sure TD reception in the first quarter. Air Force would have to settle for a field goal.

SR HB Chad Hall strained his bicep late in the 2nd quarter and would not return. This was a major blow to AF's offense as Hall was averaging 5 yards a carry at the time of his injury.

AF managed their only TD of the day after UNLV QB Rocky Hinds made an option pitch to no one early in the 3rd quarter. AF was there to scoop up the ball and they went 28 yards on 6 plays for the score and 2 point conversion to tie the game up at 14.

Until late in the 3rd quarter, AF QB Shaun Carney had done an excellent job protecting the football and not forcing the ball into traffic. UNLV LB Beau Bell made Carney pay for his first mistake of the game with an interception returned 32 yards for a TD.

AF QB Shaun Carney tries to hit FB Scott Peeples near the sideline, but UNLV LB Beau Bell is there for the pick with no one between him and the endzone.

UNLV held off AF's offense the rest of the game to win 31-17. AF SO backup QB Eric Herbort saw some action late in the 4th quarter after Shaun Carney's 2nd interception, but Herbort proved to be largely ineffective.

UNLV killed any hopes of an AF comeback with this TD run with 5:00 left in the game.

        UNLV 31 - AF 17

        HB Smith 13-42, 3.2avg, 2TD

        QB Herbort 6-12-43, 50%

        HB Smith 12-15
        TE Dekker 5-45
        WR Hemphill 4-37
        WR Root 2-21

        ILB Fowler 9TKL, 1TFL

        K R.Harrison 3-4 FG, miss from 53

        AF Stars of the game
TE Travis Dekker - 45 receiving yards on 5 catches. He's becoming Shaun Carney's go-to receiver.
ILB Drew Fowler - 9 tackles, 1 for loss. Drew played very well today against the run and in coverage.

        Postgame
This is a frustrating loss because we had several chances to score TDs in the first half, but couldn't. WR Anthony Hemphill dropping the TD pass in the corner of the endzone was a heart breaker for the team.

After we lost Chad Hall in the 2nd quarter, our run game was mostly ineffective. Without it, we simply will not win football games.

We have to turn this losing streak around with next week's rivalry game at 3-2 Colorado State. We are entering a stretch of 4 winnable games - at CSU, vs Wyoming, at New Mexico, and vs Army. We need to get at least 3 of them, otherwise matching last year's 4-8 record may be the best we can hope for.

Just be lazy like me and not put up the pics

You can come back and edit. Don't let it all build up, then it will become a chore.

Nah, it won't be a chore. I like writing this stuff. It adds personality to your team and makes dynasty more enjoyable - specially later on down the road when you can look back at previous years. I've got most of it written out, I just need to add the vids/pics.

C'mon Ea, just add some servers and fix the problem. I can understand the site being out on sunday and into monday, but not for 3 days straight now. This better not go on for a couple of weeks like the missing espn radio updates did

                    Pregame
CSU HB K.Bell is averging 6.3 a carry, csu is atop the MWC, and they beat a very good tcu team. Yet somehow I think we still have a chance at winning this one. AF is rated C+, CSU B, so a win isn't out of the realm of possibilities.

We need to stop our slide.

We are going back to basics throwing the ball. We'll keep a back in protection at all times, throw short, and limit PA. Carney has thrown too many interceptions this year and we have to find a way to stop them.

                    Game Summary

The first half was an even affair. Both teams traded interceptions and scored 10 points.

AF LB Drew Fowler sacks CSU QB Caleb Hanie in the first quarter.

Defense dominated the 3rd quarter, once again the teams traded scores. The 3rd quarter ended locked up at 13. Overtime looked to be a very likely possibility.

Late in the 4th quarter, AF's offense came alive with a 12 play, 87 yard drive for the go ahead TD. With only 4 minutes left, AF just needed to hold CSU once, maybe twice for the win.

QB Shaun Carney throws a 10 yard TD pass to Chad Hall late in the 4th quarter to take the lead.

AF could not hold. CSU drove right down the field only needing 2:48 to go 70 yards in 9 plays to tie the game up at 20.

CSU QB C.Hanie finds G.Hill in the endzone from 20 yards out to tie the game at 20 with 1:11 left.

AF got the kickoff and was stopped by CSU 3 plays in a row. I elected to pass the ball on a 3rd down, but Carney threw an incomplete pass and saved CSU from using their final timeout. We had to punt back to CSU with 22 seconds left. 3 plays later, CSU was at the 31 and with the clock stopped at :02 after using their last timeout.

CSU K.Bell gets CSU into field goal position for a game winning field goal attempt.

CSU kicker Durrell Chamorro kicked the game winning field goal from 48 yards out as the clock hit 00:00.

HB Chad Hall, 139 total yards and 1 rec TD. We don't have much offense without Chad, and he delivered today.
ILB Drew Fowler, 8 tackles and 1 sack. Helped to hold CSU HB Bell to 3.9 per carry.

                    Postgame
This loss killed any shot of doing anything in the MWC and just about destroyed any bowl long shot hopes for my first year. We'll need to dig deep to come up with 4 wins this year because our schedule doesn't have too many winnable games left.

We played well enough to win, but couldn't hold late in the 4th quarter nor could we move the ball when we had to in order to kill the clock.

Next week we face Wyoming. If we don't win that one, we might as well pack it up for the rest of the year.

Wyoming beat winless BYU, that's it. Here is our best chance to climb out of the gutter by stepping all over the other team in the gutter. We have New Mexico, Army, Notre Dame, and SDSU left after this game, we need this one.

                      Game Summary

A low scoring 1st half, each team could only manage a single TD. 7-7 at the half. We had some bad news when senior outside linebacker John Rabold broke his wrist in the 2nd quarter. It doesn't look like he'll be back for the rest of the year.

Wyoming TE Wade Betschart scores on a pass play at the goal line to tie the game up with 6 seconds left in the half.

Each team had one good drive in the 3rd quarter, and once again exchanged TD scores. As the 4th quarter began, the game was tied at 14.

Wyoming went ahead by 3 with a long 51 yard field goal from kicker Jake Scott. As the grim reality of losing this game was setting in after being forced to punt the ball back to Wyoming, a gift was handed to us.

AF SS Chris Thomas scoops up a Wynel Seldon fumble and returns the ball 73 yards for the go ahead score. WYO 17 - AF 21.

With thoughts of last week's game and our inability to sit on a lead, coach Tiger decided to run the ball, and run some more for the final 5:16 of the game.

With 2:23 left in the game and Wyoming pinned at their own 15, WYO QB Karsten Sween coughed up the ball on an option play. Wyoming knew we were going to run, but we ran anyways. We only managed 4 yards and settled for a 28 yard field goal to go ahead by 7, WYO 17 - AF 24.

Our defense just needed to hold for 1:33, that's it. We could not. Several key broken tackles and some mix ups in coverage and less than a minute later, WYO QB K.Sween found WR Hoost Marsh for a 18 yard TD score. Our defense had let us down again when it really counted. The game was tied 24 - 24 and we went into overtime.

Wyoming lost the OT coin toss and we elected to play defense first. Amazingly our defense held with the help of a huge tackle for loss by Drew Fowler. Wyoming only moved the ball one yard and had to settle for the a 41 yard field goal attempt.

#21 Wyoming kicker Jake Scott stares in disbelief after missing a 41 yard field goal in overtime. He had nailed a 51 yarder in the 4th quarter.

We knew our defense probably wouldn't hold like that again and the offense had to win it right now.

HB Chad Hall goes right up the middle for an 11 yard TD run to win the game in OT. RT Ryan Zeman pancakes his man and moves to the second level to clear the way.

Wyoming's defense, tired and drained from the FG miss, just parted and let us through for the OT game winner.

                      Postgame
A game we absolutely had to win, and almost didn't. We had trouble containing WYO's pass offense and once again QB Shaun Carney struggled. At this point, I don't think sophomore backup Eric Herbort is ready to take over the starting job. I think I"ll have to cut out some of the deeper passing plays and take the game out of Carney's hands somewhat by running even more.

We improve to 3-5 and now have 2 wins in conference play. Next week we face a dangerous New Mexico team that has a mobile but young QB in Donovan Porterie. We'll have to juggle the starting outside linebackers a bit with senior OLB John Rabold confirmed out for the season. The early plan is to have JR Trent Burney and JR Garrett Gilbertson split time replacing him.

After the game, we made offers to several of the visiting prospects. 4 agreed to become Air Force Falcons. It was a great week in my young coaching career.

New Mexico lost their last two at Wyoming and at SDSU. They are without their starting HB R.Ferguson, but have a capable backup in M.Epps.

We are going to try and simplify the offense for Carney to get a handle on the interceptions.

                        Game Summary

The first half featured AF LB Drew Fowler all over the field making hits. The guy showed up everywhere New Mexico went. Both teams played well and the score at halftime was AF 17 - NM 21.

The 3rd quarter started off poorly for us, Chad Hall fumbled the ball on a long run after taking a devastating hit. He was a bit dazed, but ready to go after sitting on the sideline for a few minutes. New Mexico turned the turnover into 3 points to take a 7 point lead, AF 17 - NM 24.

The 4th quarter began with NM struggling to move the ball out of their own half.

AF CB Kevin Rivers and SS Chris Thomas stop NM QB Donovan Porterie on an option play early in the 4th quarter. Porterie would fumble the ball, but AF would be stopped and have to punt the ball right back.

With senior OLB John Rabold out for the rest of the year, backup JR Trent Burney makes the most of his opportunity. He intercepts the D.Porterie pass and returns it for the tying score in the 4th quarter, AF 24 - NM 24.

The rest of the 4th quarter was played with one eye on the clock. Who was going to score last? With 1:41 left, AF kicker Ryan Harrison gave us the lead 27-24. Surely our defense wouldn't let us down in the 4th quarter for 3 straight games? While not a total defeat, they did surrender 40 yards in under one minute to NM, but held at our 30 yard line. NM was held to a 47 yard tying field goal with 39 seconds left. Rather than risk anything, we sat on the ball to go to overtime for the 2nd week in a row.

Once again our defense stiffened in overtime, AF FS Bobby Giannini was key as he batted down a sure TD pass over the middle of the field on a 3rd down to force a field goal attempt. NM took the overtime lead AF 27 - NM 30.

We were in this situation last week, our offense responded.

Air Force senior QB Shaun Carney scores the game winner on an option play from the 7 yard line.

Another OT thriller. A game I would never really have expected to win, but QB Shaun Carney finally had decent day throwing 2 TDs and only one interception. Our defense just steps up their game in OT. A great showing by JR Trent Burney in his first game replacing injured John Rabold.

We're now 4-5[3-4] and we've at least equaled last year's 4-8 season. I don't see anyway for us to vie for the MWC title, but we now have an outside shot at a bowl game. We'll have to beat Army and steal one away from SDSU at home in the final game of the year.

Win or lose, just as long as it's not another overtime game I'll be happy. Seriously, we've got 7 important recruits visiting this week's rivalry game so we need a win.

I'm going to continue limiting the pass plays for QB Shuan Carney and rely more on the run. Army WR J.Trimble should be the only deep threat we have to worry about. Their HB is small and elusive, so tackling will be important today.

If we want to go to a bowl game, we have to beat Army.

                            Game Summary

The first half belonged to AF's offense. We were just clicking both running and passing and grabbed a 20-7 halftime lead.

This 32 yard screen pass to HB Chad Smith leads an early 25 yard field goal.

AF LB Drew Fowler showing he can get out into coverage by swatting away an Army pass in the 2nd quarter.

Our lead would have been even bigger at the half if not for a holding call on WR M.Moffett that nullified a 50 yard Chad Hall TD run late in the 2nd quarter.

In the 3rd quarter, Army made things interesting with a long drive capped off by a 6 yard Pevoto TD pass, Army 14 - AF 20. AF could only answer with a field goal after being held at the goal line on 3 straight plays.

HB Chad Hall holds off the Army defender and gains 36 yards midway into the 3rd quarter. This play would help get AF into the red zone and get a field goal.

The 3rd quarter ended with the score, Army 14 - AF 23.

The 4th quarter was full of defense on both sides. We ran the ball as much as possible to kill the clock and kept Army off the scoreboard. AF kicker Ryan Harrison added 3 points of insurance to give AF the win and a shot at the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy.

                            Army 14 - AF 26

                            AF Stars of the game
FB Scott Peeples, Scott showed some talent today, running for 43 and a TD, and bringing in one pass for 6 yards.
K Ryan Harrison, 4-4 in field goals. He was Mr. Consistent and won us the game.

                            Postgame
A good performance on both sides of the ball today. We held Army to under 200 yards, and only had one turnover - a HB Chad Smith fumble lost. Sure Army doesn't have a great offense, but after giving up 300+ yards passing the last two weeks, it's a good sign that we can still stop someone.

We're now 5-5 and have to go to Notre Dame and then host SDSU for the last game of the year. ND is only 4-5, but I don't expect to win that one, maybe not even keep it close. So our bowl hopes rest on beating a very hot SDSU team the last game of the year.

Tanner loved what the AFA has to offer and signed after the Army game. I was hoping more prospects would be impressed by the rivalry game win and would sign, but I'm very happy with Tanner committing to AF.

Notre Dame's offense is struggling, I'm sure they'd like to pad their stats against us. I want to go out there and limit our turnovers, stay healthy, and at least not get walked all over on NBC for the whole country to see.

                                Game Summary

Notre Dame jumped out to an early 10-0 lead in the first, but AF looked like they may be able to claw back into the game after getting a field goal and a TD(but missing the xp) in the second quarter. ND's offense didn't care, they just kept on scoring and put up 14 in the second quarter.

Notre Dame's first of many scores today.

It was AF 9 - ND 24 at the half.

The second half was all ND, they put up another 14 in the 3rd and added a field goal midway into the 4th. AF was held scoreless. ND's defense was just too much and we could not move the ball.

HB Chad Hall, 106 total yards against a good defense.
CB Kevin Rivers, 2 interceptions. ND QB Clausen was good throwing for 300+ yards, but not perfect, we did manage 3 interceptions against him.

                                Postgame
Coach Tiger was a bit upset at ND coach Weis for leaving his starters in the whole game, but what are you going to do? It's Notre Dame and they can do whatever they want.

We couldn't keep the game close, but at lest no one got hurt and we did score a TD.

We head into our last game hosting SDSU next week at 5-6. SDSU is now 8-2 after beating UNLV in OT this week and they now have won 5 in a row. If the players want to go bowling, they'll just have to end SDSU's winning streak.
