    Air Force Academy Falcons(restarted) (ncaa08)

    NCAA Football 2008 (360)
    Sliders: mine
    10 minute quarters
    Rosters: dkrause 8.03

    House Rules - recruiting

    No redshirts.
Will not recruit players over 300 lbs or over 6'7".
Academic Prestige must always be pitched to players no matter their interest.
A recruit must have average or greater interest in Academic Prestige. A combination of other interests, high awareness, and high interest in Air Force may make up for a low AcPrstg interest on a recruit by recruit basis.
Low awareness players will not be recruited (cannot be lower than a C, unless the recruit has AF in the top 3 schools and is very interested in academic prestige).
Non pipeline recruits must express interest in Air Force (AF must be on their list of schools).
3*** and above recruits must have AF in their top 6 schools(to be refined if AF attains 3 *** school status)

    House Rules - gameplay

No pitching the ball beyond 3 to 5 yards of the LOS when running the option.
No pitching the ball when the QB is wrapped up and going down. If the pitch is made by mistake when wrapped up the runner must go out of bounds within 3-5 yards of the LOS if not stopped for a loss.
FG kicks must be made with a single movement on the stick for adjusting height/direction. No fine tuning the kick arrow. Same for punts.
No calling the same pass play twice in a single drive. Will try to avoid calling the same pass play twice in the same half.
Playing as a LB with little to no switching during the play on defense.

The United States Air Force Academy, located immediately north of Colorado Springs in El Paso County, Colorado, United States, is an institution for the undergraduate education of officers for the United States Air Force.

The Air Force Academy is among the most selective colleges in the United States. Candidates are judged based on their academic achievement, demonstrated leadership, athletics and character. Cadets pay no tuition, but incur a commitment to serve a number of years in the military service after graduation.

The program at the Academy is guided by its core values of "Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence In All We Do," and based on four "pillars" of excellence: military training, academics, athletics and character development.

    --------------------------------------------------------

What you need to know about the offense:
The Falcons will be running an option oriented offense, but will pass more than previous years. We have a senior quarterback, senior halfback, senior tight end, and senior wide receivers. Most of the offensive line are also seniors.

We will run early to set up the play action and intermediate passing game. Very rarely we will throw deep.

AF will get the ball to Chad Hall as much as possible.

    Star of the offense:
SR HB Chad Hall - He will line up in the backfield, in the slot, and outside as a wide receiver. He is fast, elusive, and tough.
Player that has to step up and become a star: Senior tight end Travis Dekker. With an increased emphasis on passing, the TE will play a a big role in the offense.
Unsung star on the rise: Sophomore WR Anthony Hemphill. Anthony has great size and speed. Anthony is the slot receiver and will see action mostly on 3rd downs.
Best pro prospect: Sr HB Chad Hall.
Top three all-american candidates: 1) HB Chad Hall, 2) QB Shaun Carney, 3) C Blaine Guenther.
Strength of the offense: Impact quarterback and impact halfback running the option. Short passes into the flat and over the middle.
Weakness of the offense: Offensive line and wide receivers. Shaun Carney will not get much time in the pocket. His receivers will rarely beat the defense deep.

What you need to know about the defense:
Small, without proven backups, and senior heavy. We will have to rely on creative blitzing schemes out of the 3-4 in order to generate pressure. Our undersized defensive line will almost always have help from a blitzing linebacker or two. Where possible we will attack, against superior opponents we will try to keep everything in front of us running cover 3.

Star of the defense: Senior LB Drew Fowler, lead the MWC in tackles last season.
Player that has to step up and become a star: Junior DT Keith Williams. Keith anchors our 3 man line in the middle. He needs to create pressure to free up our linebackers.
Unsung star on the rise: Junior CB Kevin Rivers. Kevin is the nickel corner and will see a lot of action this year. He's fast and a decent tackler.
Best pro prospect: Senior LB Drew Fowler
Top three all-american candidates: 1) LB Fowler, 2) FS Giannini, 3) CB Rybak
Strength of the defense: Fowler stopping the run.
Weakness of the defense: Undersized, tackling and pass coverage ability suspect.

South Carolina State (0-0) at Air Force (0-0)

      Pregame
South Carolina State is a division 1aa team, but will not be taken lightly.

Our number one goal is to stay healthy. This game is being talked about almost as if it's a preseason game. I personally don't like to see it that way and I've assured the players losing this one will count on our record.

      Game summary

Air Force out played South Carolina State from the first snap to the last. AF's 1st team offense scored 21 points in the 1st quarter while it's defense came up with 7. The SCSU Bulldogs were outmatched and AF pulled their starters late in the 2nd quarter.

AF backup quarterback, Sophomore Eric Herbort, never found a rhythm in his limited time in the third quarter and looked shaky. He threw 2 interceptions and only completed one pass for 4 yards. He was replaced with 3rd string quarter back Shea Smith after his second interception.

SCSU did manage a touchdown pass against the 2nd team defense at the end of the first half, and a touchdown pass in the closing seconds of the 3rd quarter against the AF 3rd team defense. AF coasted to a 48-13 win and kept everyone healthy to start the season right.

Senior HB Chad Hall started the year off with a bang, scoring a 61 yard TD run on the first play from scrimmage.

WR Mark Root celebrates in the endzone after a 37 yard TD reception in AF's dismantling of South Carolina State.

      SCSU 13 - AF 48

      SCSU
      offense 150
      rush 16-(-3)
      pass 12-25-153

      AF
      offense 441
      rush 43-306
      pass 9-16-135
      penalties 7-50

      QB Carney 7-10-125, 3TD, sacked 2
      HB Hall 8-135, 2TD, long 61
      WR Root 1-37, 1TD

      AF stars of the game
HB Chad Hall, 150 total yards and 2 TDs on the ground. Chad started the game with a 61 yard TD run.
QB Shaun Carney, 3 TDs in 10 attempts.

      Postgame
There's not much to say other than we stayed healthy and won. I think I managed to get every single player on AF's roster into the game. I was disappointed in backup QB Eric Herbort's performance and pulled him before he could make things worse. Hopefully Eric will respond well in practice and I'll try and get him more game time where possible.

Our conference opener comes early, we play the 0-1 Utah Utes next week. They lost to Oregon State last week 13-26.

Utah's passing attack will be hard for us to stop. Utes QB Brian Johnson can pass and run. We'll have to put a spy on him on 3rd downs, possibly other downs depending on how often he runs. Utes HB Darrell Mack only had 5 attempts for 22 yads after leaving the game early last week, I'm sure he'll get more today.

Today we find out what kind of team we have when we face adversity for the first time this year.

            Game Summary

Air Force's 1st quarter drive was deceiving. They went 78 yards in 12 plays, chewing up 4 minutes of time. They looked unstoppable, until they hit the red zone. AF was forced to settle for a 28 yard field goal and the Utes dodged a bullet.

In a 1st half dominated by defense, AF CB Garrett Rybak had the only TD score when he scooped up a Ute QB Brian Johnson option pitch that went to no one and ran the ball 29 yards into the endzone. Air Force was up 10 - 3 at the half.

Senior corner back, Garrett Rybak protects the ball while scoring on a 29 yard fumble return.

AF HB Chad Hall almost turns a simple pass into the flat into 6 during the 1st half. Chad's day was full of plays like these where the Utah defense was able to bring him down just as it looked like he would take it all the way.

The story of the 2nd half was Shaun Carney's arm. He threw three 2nd half interceptions, two coming in the 4th quarter when down by 7. Both were balls that were off target and killed any chance of an AF come back.

Utah's QB Brian Johnson came alive in the 2nd half after a lackluster first half. He threw two TD passes and moved the Utes into position to score their game winning TD with 1:40 left in the game.

Utah HB Darryl Poston scores the game winner from 8 yards out.

AF QB Shaun Carney's 4th interception of the day ends all hope for any last second heroics.

            AF Stars of the game
HB Chad Hall, 122 total yards but could not score. He almost broke several plays for long TDs, but Utah always managed to make the tackle.
OLB Hunter Altman, 9 Tkl(1 tfl), 2 Defl. Hunter played well both in coverage on the outside and spying on Utes QB B.Johnson. We held Johnson to -3 yards on 9 attempts.

            Postgame

A defensive struggle for sure. I didn't think our defense was capable of these types of things against quality opponents. Maybe it was just Utah's offense struggling in the first half more than our defense playing well.

QB Shaun Carney's 4 interceptions don't concern me too much. 2 came in the 4th when he had to air out the ball every play in a comeback attempt. The other 2 were from great plays by the Utah defense.

We can pass the ball when the opposing defense has to respect our run game. We cannot pass the ball when the opposing defense knows we have to pass the ball. Our offensive line just can't hold up under intense blitz pressure to give Carney enough time to see deeper routes and step into the throw.

We're now 1-1 and face off against 1-1 TCU. The last I heard, TCU's QB Marcus Jackson has a strained elbow and will not play. They have two red shirt freshmen backups so I'd imagine we will see a ton of impact HB Aaron Brown.

Awesome dynasty man. As a guy who loves house rules, you have some really great ones. I think I'll add them to mine. Ones I have include only one deep ball per half, unless it's the last play of each half and I have to throw to the endzone, and only one pass to the running back and one out-route pass play per quarter. Tough loss to Utah.

Thanks, the house recruiting rules actually have helped me so far. They really help to focus you on guys with specific attributes so you can narrow down your search. You aren't overwhelmed with who in the world should I go after when looking at prospects. That really helps with a team like AF because you can't just go after the best guys, you have to focus on the 1 to 3 star guys that fit your system.

The on the field rules are basic don't cheese the cpu stuff. I didn't put it in there, but I also snap the ball at about 10 seconds on the play clock, except when there is under 2 minutes at the end of the halves where I can milk the clock or play hurry up. Seems like if you let the cpu call their play on offense before you call your defense, they snap the ball with about 10 seconds on the play clock too.

I don't expect to win, and I don't really think this one will be close. Even with TCU's starting QB Marcus Jackson out, TCU's offense shouldn't suffer. Backup QB Andy Dalton competed with Jackson for the starting job in August.

TCU has two great defensive ends and I don't expect to have much success running to the outside.

                    Game Summary

That's why they play the games...or at least someone could have said that at the end of the first half. TCU was held to 7, red shirt freshmen QB Andy Dalton struggled to find a rhythm against AF's blitzing defense.

After being stopped on every drive in the 1st quarter, AF was able to move into TCU territory early in the 2nd quarter.

SO WR Anthony Hemphill shakes off A TCU defender in the endzone on a 22 yard TD pass to tie the game 7-7.

Air Force had no such luck in the 2nd half. TCU's defense was smothering. We could not get our run game established and as a result QB Shaun Carney never had time in the pocket to pass.

TCU scored 20 points in the 2nd half and cruised to a 27-7 victory.

TCU HB Aaron Brown jukes the linebackers and runs untouched for the final TD of the day. Brown had 137 yards on the ground.

ILB Drew Fowler - 14 tackles 3 for loss and a sack. Our defense played extremely well the first half, it's just too bad our offense couldn't match their performance.

                    Postgame
We just could not move the ball on offense. Our defense did the best they could and kept the game close until the 2nd half. Our run game was stuffed at every turn, inside, outside, triple option, whatever, TCU had a player waiting to make the tackle.

We're 1-2 after three games. We beat who we should have beat - SCSU, lost to who we should have lost to - TCU, and we almost went to Utah and won. While the record doesn't reflect it, our defense has played well above the level I thought they were capable of. Our offense has struggled.

Next week we go to Provo UT and play a 0-3 BYU team that already is injury riddled. We need to gain some momentum and win this game because we play our annual rivalry game at Navy the following week.

Yeah, I'm trying the AA sliders for the first season. At the end of the year I'll compare the results/stats to what I got from the varsity sliders and start year 2 with whatever I thought produced better results.

                            Game Summary

BYU started the game with a 77 yard TD pass from Max Hall to HB F.Vakapuna. Unfortunately for BYU, their offense wouldn't be heard from again until there were 11 seconds left in the game.

Air Force scored 14 in the first half, both on goal line runs from senior Chad Hall.

Air Force senior WR Mark Root gains 38 yards on a pass play in the first quarter. Mark caught 3 balls for 65 yards today.

After staying injury free for the first 3 games, Air Force finally was hit hard today. Senior fullback Ryan Williams tore a shoulder muscle and could possibly miss the rest of the year. He'll be out at least 2 months. Senior Scott Peeples will replace him. Senior corner back Garrett Rybak will also mostly likely miss the rest of the year after suffering a broken jaw in the 3rd quarter.

With BYU trying to make things interesting in the 4th quarter only down by 4, AF sealed the win with a 15 yard TD pass from Shaun Carney to Chad Hall.

There was some controversy in Provo as it appeared Chad Hall may not have gotten his foot down in the corner of the endzone. The play was not reviewed and AF went on to win 21-16.

ILB Drew Fowler - 10 tackles, lead the defense in holding BYU's HB Vakapuna to under 50 yards on the ground.

                            Postgame
BYU just never could move the ball consistently today. They'd grab a huge chunk of yardage, then have to punt 4 plays later. We did just enough on offense to secure the victory, thanks mostly to Chad Hall. QB Shaun Carney is still struggling a bit throwing into coverage. This is somewhat expected as he's really an option QB first, but if he could eliminate some of his mistakes we'll be in much better position.

We better watch out or someone is going to accuse us of having a pretty decent defense. We currently rank #44 in total defense in the league, mainly due to our #29 ranked rush defense. I don't think this is going to hold up over the course of the year.
