We stole last year's game from SDSU at home 33-28. I'm sure SDSU will be looking for payback. This will be one heck of an early season test. We don't open with a 1AA cupcake like last year.

There are many unknowns for both teams.

        Game Summary

The game started with neither team able to move the ball much, and that is how most of the game played out with some exceptions here and there.

Late in the 1st, SDSU put together a 14 play, 83 yard drive for a TD. We simply could not get them off the field on 3rd down.

In the second quarter In what was SDSU's final long drive of the day, they moved the ball to the goal line. Their drive was stopped with an AF interception in the endzone.

Air Force ended the half with a 12 play 50 yard drive for a field goal. AF 3 - SDSU 7.

AF JR QB Eric Herbort throws a bullet to slot receiver senior Matt Davis for a 23 yard gain to setup a field goal in the closing seconds of the first half.

SDSU controlled the 3rd quarter, but could not get any points. Their first drive ended on a fumble which AF turned into a field goal, their second drive ended on another fumble, and their final drive of the quarter ended after beings stopped on a fake punt at midfield. SDSU's offense was struggling as the quarter ended AF 6 - SDSU 7.

Senior WR and captain Spencer Armstrong dropped a pass to convert a 3rd and 7 early in the 4th and we were forced to punt. Like SDSU's offense, we struggled all day too.

SDSU went 3 and out and punted right back to us. This time we put together a decent drive and moved into the redzone and then to the goal line. 2 consecutive penalties pushed us back to the 30 yard line though. We could only get the ball back to the 14 and settled for a 31 yard go ahead field goal with 4:33 left. AF 9 - SDSU 7.

SDSU's last drive got them to the AF 38 yard line. On 4th and long with 1:15 left, SDSU set up to kick a 55 yard field goal into the 10 mph wind.

The distance combined with the wind was too much. SDSU's kicker looks on as the ball falls just short.

AF killed the final minute and won an ugly, ugly game.

CB Kevin Rivers - 10 Tackles, came up big in run support.

        Postgame
Somehow we've had SDSU's number the past two meetings. You could call it a defensive struggle, but it was more like an offense is struggling game. Both sides were flat nearly all game. I think we needed another week or two in camp.

I'm used to a HB that can catch nearly every pass out of the backfield and make guys miss in the flat. Phillips just doesn't provide that. His backup, FR Melton, has better hands but he's not as good a runner. I'm also used to 2 good inside linebackers on defense. My current starters are barely passable.

Some changes may have to be made on both sides of the ball. Starters on the bubble - HB Phillips, LB Gilbertson.

Standouts - FB Glover, WR Davis, OLB Sisk.

Truly fascinating and amazing work here mudtiger. Just mind blowing how much you are putting into this.

What did you think of the AA slider set for year 1? Happy with them? I still noticed a fair # of CPU picks. Was it overdone?

Re: Air Force Academy Falcons(restarted) (ncaa08)

Thanks, I'm really having a great time with this game despite the turnovers. I'm really liking easportsworld

I'm very happy with the year 1 results. The biggest improvement over the earlier varsity sliders was my completion % being held under 60.

I threw 22 interceptions, I'd say half of those were directly my fault for making stupid throws that I had gotten used to making on varsity. I'd say from the other 11, about half of those were good throws that the cpu came away with fairly or unfairly, and the other half of those remaining 11 were off target passes I have no control on. Plus I'm taking a traditional non-throwing team and making them throw so I can live with that number for year one.

2 games in to year two, I think I have my ints under control, I did a lot of practice mode trying to relearn what I can and can't get away with so hopefully I won't see a repeat of those int numbers.

My team's picks were reasonable for year one. Not as low as I'd like, but my top guy getting 6 picks I can live with. Sure AF had 9 total picks last year with the top guys getting 2, but for this game I can live with it. At least I didn't see any of those crazy 5+ int days or lead the league in picks.

It's still very much a problem that I'd like fixed by ea, but I've learned to live with it. The dilemma for me comes if ea does put out a patch that lowers cpu thrown ints, do I start the dynasty over or not Now that will be a tough call. I'd like to give it another go with Carney and Hall now that I'm pretty sure I'd throw less picks, but I've also drafted a couple of good guys for this one....dunno.

FR MLB Andrew Townsend is given a chance to start at ILB over SR Garrett Gilbertson. Gilbertson is just too slow and not agile enough. I was package subbing him out on nickel and dime plays last game all the time. Freshmen SS Eric Miller is now the 4th corner instead of FR CB Tanner Crowder who moves to #5 on the depth chart. I may look to split time between HB D.Phillips and J.Melton depending on how Phillips does.

Arizona QB Willie Tuitama threw for 2535 yards and 21 TDs last year. He also ran for 563 yards and 5 TDs. Our defense will have a hard time today stopping him.

Hopefully the heat won't hurt us too badly. It's a dry heat.

              Game Summary

We started the game by driving into the redzone only to throw an interception in the endzone. It was a throw Herbort should have never made. Arizona turned it into a 42 yard field goal. The rest of the quarter belonged to us. Herbort made up for the interception by scoring on a 47 yard pass and 27 yard pass.

AF TE Keith Madsen turns a 1st down gain into a 47 yard TD reception in the 1st quarter.

QB Eric Herbort extends the AF lead by hitting Spencer Armstrong for a 27 yard TD pass.

The quarter ended AF 14 - Arizona 3.

Arizona kicked a 22yard field goal early in the 2nd quarter to cut the lead to 8. Arizona would miss 2 other field goals before the end of the half.

The score was AF 14 - Arizona 6 at the start of the 2nd half.

Arizona started the half with a 39 yard TD pass from W.Tuitama to WR M.Thomas. They went for and got the 2 points to tie the game at 14.

Arizona WR M.Thomas cuts up field and beats Hunter Altman and Chris Bennett for the 39 yard TD.

Hunter Altman would regain the lead for AF when he picked off a W.Tuitama pass and returned it 15 yards for the score.

With 1:19 left in the quarter, Arizona kicked a 38 yard field goal to get within 4, AF 21 - Ariz 17.

The 4th quarter belonged to the Wildcats. After a long run off a draw, Arizona scored on a 7 yard W.Tuitama pass to WR B.Dennard to take the lead.

HB Xavier Smith eludes a group of AF defenders and runs 52 yards to get into scoring position. Arizona would go up 24-21 after the Dennard TD reception.

For the rest of the game, the AF offense could not manage to sustain a drive. To add insult to injury, we gave up a safety after being pinned on our 1 yard line.

HB Daylan Phillips can't get out of the endzone and gets knocked backwards for the safety.

Arizona holds on to the slim lead for the win.

TE Keith Madsen, 98 yards and a TD. His 47 yard run...wow, just wow. I've never seen someone that slow break away from the defense.
LOLB Jeff Sisk, 9 tackles, 2 for loss, and a sack. This kid was a 4 star recruit and number one on our board last year. He committed early and he's making an impact early.

              Postgame

We wanted a tough non conference game instead of a cupcake and got it. We got burned just enough when Arizona went 4 wide and ran the option or jet sweep play to keep us honest and unable to stop the pass...although Arizona seemed good enough that they probably would have thrown on us either way.

A tough loss, but one I can stomach because we only lost by 5 to a good team. The team played pretty well and I was happy with HB Daylan Phillip's game after he was challenged in practice all week by freshmen backup Jeremy Melton. I was also very happy with QB Eric Herbort's day. He made one mistake early in the game and was punished for it with the pick, otherwise he had a great day throwing and running.

As of right now, freshmen ILB Andrew Townsend has earned the starting spot over senior Garrett Gilbertson.

Next week we have a bye. We host Utah the week after.

Your dynasty looks good and the pictures/videos are great.

That was a tough loss to Arizona as Tuitama seemed to tear apart the defense through the air. Hopefully the team can bounce back in the next game.

It was a good game, but one I wasn't really expecting to win. I can't stop a passing team that has multiple wr weapons or likes to run the draw/option/jet sweep out of 4 wide. I just don't have the players yet.

This year's team is a little bit worse than last year's team. I miss having an impact guy in the backfield to carry the load on offense. The defense lost a lot of starters, but I recruited some good safeties, decent cornerbacks, and a very good ATH/OLB. I need to get some good MLBs and D linemen this year, but so far not too many guys on my recruiting board have AF high on their list. I think I packed it with too many 3 star guys and not enough 2's. I may have shuffle it around if guys don't start biting soon.

I'm hoping to just match last year's 6-6 record.

Tough loss on the road to what was most likely a superior team... really enjoying your work, MT. Remember, 1-2-3-4 I love the Air Force!!! Sorry, but that's left over from my ROTC days...

We've had an extra week to prepare for Utah and I still don't feel ready to play them. Their QB B.Johnson already has almost 800 passing yards after 3 games. They have a very good offense, but below average defense. Hopefully we'll catch some breaks.

                        Game Summary

Air Force HB Daylan Phillips capped off our first possession of the game with a 3 yard TD run to take an early lead.

AF HB D.Phillips celebrates his 1st TD of the year after a 9 play, 63 yard drive for the score.

Utah was rocked on their next possession when QB Brian Johnson went out injured with a sprained elbow. He would miss the rest of the game. His backup, redshirt freshmen Griffin Robles, threw for a considerable amount of yards, but looked shaky all game.

AF would jump out to a 24-10 lead at half-time.

This 36 yard AF screen pass to HB D.Phillips would get AF into field goal range early in the 2nd quarter.

AF TE Keith Madsen at the back of the endzone after his 9 yard TD reception to put up AF up 17-10 mid 2nd quarter.

The half would end with AF SS Chris Thomas getting his 2nd interception of the day. We turned that one into a 3 yard TD run by FB Warren Glover to go up 24-10.

We exchanged field goals in the 3rd quarter after each team managed a 10 play drive.

Utah did get a 4th quarter TD, but it was with 2:29 left in the game and we were able to hold off the Utes the final 2+ minutes.

FR CB Chris Bennett stretches to get his first interception of the year to kill any chance of Utah coming back late in the game.

SS Chris Thomas - 10 tackles, 1 for loss, and 2 interceptions. Utah's redshirt FR QB was erratic all day and Chris took advantage of his opportunities.
FB Warren Glover - 10-49 yards rushing and 1 TD. Warren is showing he is decent blocker and can tote the ball effectively when needed.

                        Postgame

Utah redshirt freshmen QB gives the game away to us after their starter was injured. It's hardly believable that we'd start the year 2-1 with both wins coming from conference play. Herbort struggled a bit this week, but the ground game made up for it.

Next week we face off against a struggling CSU team. They are 1-3, but have the #10 rush offense in the country and their losses were to Colorado, Oklahoma, and Northwestern. It's a rivalry game and I'm sure CSU will be up for it.

The Battle for the Ram-Falcon Trophy. Last year we lost this on a CSU field goal with 22 seconds left in the game.

Despite being 1-3, CSU has a good team stat wise. This will be a major test of our run defense.

                              Game Summary

We had trouble stopping CSU all day. Early on the defense contained CSU HB Bell, but we couldn't hold their passing attack. Later in the game once we started slowing down their passing game, their run game caught fire.

CSU led 27-0 at the end of the first half. CSU HB K.Bell went was injured midway into the 2nd quarter, he appeared to suffer a concussion and did not return.

The only AF highlight came early in the 3rd quarter after another CSU TD. Backup HB Jeremy Melton caught a pass out of the flex, broke 2 tackles and raced 71 yards for the score to at least avoid a goose egg on the score board. That was it for the AF offense today.

CSU's final score of the day.

4th string HB, FR Doug Cronin may have suffered a broken rib in garbage time late in the 4th, he will miss at least 2 weeks.

ROLB Hunter Altman - 15 tackles, one of the few guys that showed up on defense today.
HB Jeremy Melton - 71 yard reception for TD.

                              Postgame
The major test for our run defense? Yeah, we failed the test giving up 209 on the ground.

After seeing SR backup QB Shea Smith play, I may be quicker to yank Herbort if he is struggling. Smith played well coming off the bench in the 2nd half. Freshmen HB Jeremy Mitchell may see more time too after 4 very good runs in the 4th quarter.

HB Daylan Phillips let Herbort down time after time with dropped passes in the flat. He may be dropping his way out of the starting job. Guys are on notice, one more game like that and things will change.

Next week is another rivalry game, this time vs. Navy.
