LOL, yeah, Smith was jumping up and down behind him, but Carney just did a little fist pump and dropped the ball. I guess he's still a bit depressed from coach hammering him throughout the practice week for throwing too many picks

      Pregame
Our last game of the year vs 8-2 SDSU. SDSU has won their last 5 scoring 40 or more points in 4 of those wins. Yikes. Yet if we want to go bowling, we have to knock these guys off.

All bets are off, we'll do whatever we have to do on offense to get it done. I want to get this win for the seniors.

      Game Summary
The last game of the year started with an outstanding AF 14 play, 65 yard drive for TD, eating up 5:11 of the clock. Shaun Carney found WR Mike Moffett for a 15 yard score.

SDSU scored on an 80 yard pass play to HB L.Hamilton and a 6 yard pass to WR B.Swain in the second quarter, while AF could only get a 33 yard field goal. It was SDSU 14 - AF 10 at the half.

The third quarter belonged to AF. After AF punter SO Brandon Geyer pinned SDSU deep in their own end, I let the LB's loose. We blitzed and blitzed some more until we got the safety. SDSU 14 - AF 12.

We got the ball right back and drove into SDSU territory. Chad Hall finished the drive with a 31 yard option run for the score. We regained the lead going into the 4th quarter, SDSU 14 - AF 19.

Chad Hall wasn't done. with 7:12 to go in the game, he ripped off another long run for a TD to put AF up by 12.

AF SR HB Chad Hall speeds to the sideline on a stretch play, breaks a tackle and pulls away to the pylon for a 22 yard TD, SDSU 14 - AF 26.

SDSU answered right back to keep the game close, scoring on an 8 yard scramble from QB K.OConnell with 3:55 left. SDSU 21 - AF 26.

After limiting AF QB Carney's green light to throw deep the past month, I finally let him go. SDSU impact SS Ray Bass went out with a stinger and we saw our opportunity to strike with a backup protecting against the deep threat.

AF QB Shaun Carney hits WR Mark Root on the 51 yard play action bomb to extend the AF lead back to 12.

Once again our defense could not hold and SDSU drove down the field for a5 yard TD pass to WR B.Swain.

With 2:08 to go in the game and down by 6, SDSU did not go for the onside kick. We've been in this situation so many times before and it hasn't worked out for us. We just need to put together one last drive to end the game.

We're stopped at midfield with 52 seconds left, but we've forced SDSU to use all of their timeouts. AF punter Brandon Geyer boots the ball into the endzone and SDSU starts on their own 20 with 48 seconds to work with, down by 6.

On SDSU's second play from the 20, AF LB Aaron Shanor seals the win and a possible bowl berth with an interception to end the game.

We stop the drive before it even starts, Air Force WINS!

      Postgame
Visions of Bowl games dancing in my head. This team is just not used to winning. In the past month, we have shown it. We don't know how to kill a game in the 4th quarter when we have a lead. Hopefully this win can start to change that for our non seniors for next year. We grabbed the lead in the 3rd quarter and held on to it.

We end conference play 6-6[4-4]. I've heard the New Mexico Bowl is a possibility for us. I don't really care where at this point, just as long as we go somewhere. 6-6 is our best record since 2003 when AF was 7-5.

Air Force's last bowl game was after an 8-4 year in 2002. We lost to Virginia Tech in the inaugural Emerald Bowl, 13 - 20.

Rice threw for 3000+ yards? I would have had no idea. That is a bit scary because we gave up 300+ passing yards to QBs quite a few times.

An interesting match up. Rice can throw but can't defend the pass. We can run, but can't pass or defend the pass. Rice's biggest win of the year came against 8-4 Memphis, 41-38 in OT.

We're going to go out there and run the offense that got us invited to this game. The offense we ran when we played SDSU where we loosened the restrictions on Shaun Carney. We'll try and establish the run early, air it out when the matchup is right, and try to protect the ball.

                  Game summary

                  First play of the game.

Air Force senior HB Chad Hall goes untouched 72 yards for the opening TD.

Rice is held for a 3 and out, but Chad Hall can't hold on to the ball this time.

AF HB Chad Hall gets stopped in the back field and fumbles the ball. Rice is there to scoop and score.

AF QB Shaun Carney threw an interception while being hit on the next possession, but Rice could not capitalize on this and missed a 51 yard field goal. Shaun Carney would make up for his mistake.

A 61 yard TD pass to WR Mike Moffett puts AF up 14-7 in the 1st quarter

The first quarter would end with each team going 3 and out and being forced to punt.

The 2nd quarter belonged to Rice. They scored on a 4th down and goal early in the quarter, but missed the extra point. AF 14 - Rice 13. Air Force could not get their offense moving, Rice LB T.Garmon was in the backfield all day and forced us to punt.

Rice drove the ball 48 yards in 8 plays and this time scored on a B.Benibo 1 yard run at the goal line. Rice took the lead, AF 14 Rice 20. On our next possession, a holding call forced us into a bad situation and we went 3 and out and punted. The half ended with a Rice field goal with 1:32 to go, and then an AF field goal as time expired. AF's offense had some momentum going into the locker room after their very well run 2 minute drill got them into field goal range.

It was AF 17 - Rice 23 at the half.

Rice got the ball to open the 2nd half and was stopped with a sack on 3rd down and had to punt. For the 2nd time in the game, AF HB Chad Hall fumbled the ball after getting hit in the backfield. Rice moved the ball down to the goal line, but the Air Force defense held on 4 straight plays and earned the turnover.

Rice QB C.Clement is stopped by AF LB Hunter Altman inches from the endzone to force a turnover on downs

Air Force's offense managed to move the ball past midfield as the third quarter drew to a close. Early in the 4th as the drive continued, Air Force laid the ball on the ground again. This time TE Travis Dekker after getting his legs taken out, dropped the ball on the way down as he was trying to cushion his fall. Rice recovered another fumble.

AF TE T.Dekker fumbles the ball right before he hits the ground early in the 4th quarter.

Luckily, Rice gave the ball right back with an interception on an overthrown ball. With 7:51 to go in the game, AF was still in decent shape, only down by 6. We just needed to get our offense going again.

On a 3rd and 4 in our own territory, AF HB Chad Hall drops a pass that would have resulted in a first down.

Both teams went 3 and out on their next 2 possessions. With 3:31 to go in the game, AF got the ball back on their 20. Sensing time was running out and we needed to come away with at least a field goal pretty quickly, coach Tiger decided to start putting the ball in the air.

Rice CB Jacorey Shepherd got his 2nd interception of the day, and sixth of the year on an off target Shaun Carney throw. Shepherd ran stride for stride with AF WR Mark Root across the middle of the field and timed his jump perfectly to come away with the pick. He then broke a tackle and ran 23 yards for the final nail in the coffin. Rice tacked on the 2 point conversion and went ahead by 14.

We couldn't move the ball as time trickled away and we turned the ball over on downs. Rice sat on the ball and won the Papajohns.com Bowl.

                  Postgame
Ugh. Rice's SO LOLB Terrance Garmon was in our face all day. He had 7 tackles for loss. We had no answer for him in the 2nd half and we were held scoreless. This game started so well, but turnovers did us in, both fumbles and interceptions. Carney's passes were fluttering all day, even on his 61 yard TD pass.

I'd just like to forget the first bowl game of my coaching career and remember our 6-6 year. We had so many great players this year and I'm going to miss every single senior that is leaving.

There is a lot of work to do this offseason, we already have 5 very good prospects committed to Air Force, but we are going to need a lot more for next year's team to match this year's 6-6 record and a bowl game.

                    Offense

Star of the offense: (Preseason Chad Hall) SR HB Chad Hall - Chad did it all for us this year. He lead the team in rushing yards and receiving yards.
Player that has to step up and become a star: (Preseason TE Travis Dekker) Backup FB Scott Peeples stepped up. When starter Ryan Williams went out with a torn shoulder muscle in week 4, Scott stepped in and did everything we asked of him.
Unsung star on the rise: (Preseason So WR Anthony Hemphill) LG JR Andrew Pipes. Andrew lead the team with 24 pancakes and only gave up 2 sacks. He'll anchor the left side next year.
Best pro prospect: (Preseason Sr HB Chad Hall) Chad Hall, though he is too small to play in the NFL.
Top three All-American candidates: (Preseason HB Chad Hall, QB Shaun Carney, C Blaine Guenther) We had no All - Americans.

                    Defense

Star of the defense: (Preseason SR LB Drew Fowler) Drew Fowler. 120 tackles.
Player that has to step up and become a star: (Preseason JR DT Keith Williams) Senior RE Josh Clayton stepped his game up and earned 7 sacks this year.
Unsung star on the rise: (Preseason JR CB Kevin Rivers) Kevin Rivers. Lead the team with 6 interceptions and moved into the number 2 spot quit well when SR CB Garrett Rybak was out injured.
Best pro prospect: (Preseason SR LB Drew Fowler) Drew Fowler. I hope he turned some heads and hets picked up in the late rounds.
Top three All-American candidates: (Preseason LB Fowler, FS Giannini, CB Rybak) We had no All - Americans

The Bullard Award: Falcon Football’s Highest Honor
The Bullard Award is voted on by the team based on the criteria that typifies Brian Bullard – unselfishness, 110 percent effort, total team commitment and pride in his role on the team whether he’s a starter or not.

This year's Bullard Award was given to Captain of the defense, Drew Fowler. Drew ends the year averaging 9.2 tackles a game, and he probably will lead the nation with 120 tackles. He was a force on the inside stopping the run and he improved his coverage skills his senior year. Drew will not easily be replaced.

                        -----------------

Several weeks after our Bowl loss, I can look back and say we had a very good year. We led the MWC in tackles, taking the top 3 spots. Plus Drew Fowler led the country with 120, 21 more than the next spot.

We scored 22.5 ppg, our opponents scored 25.6. Our 3rd down % was 36% while our opponents' was 39%. We got 2 unexpected wins against New Mexico and stole one from SDSU. We already have 5 prospects committed to Air Force, and 2 have given a verbal commitment. I can't wait to dive into the off season!

What you need to know about the offense:
The Falcons will be running an option oriented offense, but they will try to pass more than previous years. We were very senior heavy last year without many non senior backups, so this year we are forced to play a number of freshmen.

We have a Junior quarterback with limited in game experience, a senior tailback with all freshmen backups, one senior tight end with two freshmen backups, and one senior wide receiver. Our offensive line is a bit shaky, but preseason All-American LG Andrew Pipes leads the unit.

We will run early to set up the play action and intermediate passing game. Very rarely we will throw deep.

                                Offense
                                Returning starters: 1

                                Star of the offense:
HB SR Daylan Phillips - Daylan has some speed, but also weighs in at 223 lbs. He can run over some defenders.
Player that has to step up and become a star: Junior QB Eric Herbort. With virtually no in-game experience, Eric needs to show why he was named the starter in preseason.
Unsung star on the rise: FR TE Brian Brown. He is the 2nd TE and should see some playing time. He has decent hands and size.
Best pro prospect: LG Andrew Pipes
Strength of the offense: Mobile QB and big halfback.
Weakness of the offense: Inexperience at every position.

                                Defense
                                Returning starters: 5

What you need to know about the defense:
We will have to rely on creative blitzing schemes out of the 3-4 in order to generate pressure. Our undersized defensive line will almost always have help from a blitzing linebacker. Where possible we will attack, against superior opponents we will try to keep everything in front of us.

The defense returns 5 very good starters and has 2 All-Americans, CB Kevin Rivers and SS Chris Thomas.

Star of the defense: Senior ROLB Hunter Altman.
Player that has to step up and become a star: Untested senior inside LBs, Reeves and Gilbertson.
Unsung star on the rise: Freshmen SS Eric Miller. He almost beat out All American SS Chris Thomas for the starting spot.
Best pro prospect: Senior CB Kevin Rivers
Strength of the defense: Good tackling DBs, and returning starters on the line.
Weakness of the defense: Inexperience at inside LB

Players to watch on the offense

JR QB Eric Herbort, takes over the offense. Is an option QB with some accuracy. Little experience.
SR HB Daylan Phillips, Has good speed and can truck some defenders at 223 lbs.
SR WR Spencer Armstrong, Captain of the offense, has good speed and hands.

Players to watch on the defense
LE Jake Paulson, had a great year last year with 39 tackles and 4 sacks, looking to improve on it.
ROLB Hunter Altman, was second to Drew Fowler in tackles last year.
CB Kevin Rivers, preseason All-American, had 71 tackles and 6 interceptions last year.
