          2008 Marshall Preview

The Herd come in looking to make a bowl game once again. Last year, they finished 6-7 (4-4) and lost the New Orleans Bowl. This year, look for the Herd to finish 5-7. The Herd may not make it to a bowl this season as they have a murderous non-conference schedule. Let's hope the do, though, and "We Are Marshall"!

Do you see the team focusing more and more on the run after Bernie left?

The special teams looks to be especially weak this season. We recruited a true freshman kicker in Aaron Richards, but he is rated as a 40 overall. Absolutely terrible! Senior punter Marty Biagi will be the place kicker and punter this season in place of Richards. Our return team looks good, but our kicking situation could prove disastrous in close games.

Our defense does not look too good either, in particular our secondary. The secondary was not good last year either, but they racked up the interceptions to allow us to stay in games. Our highest rated player in the secondary is cornerback JJ Johnson, an 81 overall. Our free safety is CJ Spillman, a 75 overall, and our strong safety, Phillip Gamble, is a 77 overall.

Yes, now that Bernie Morris is gone, we should run the ball more. We would not have normally ran the ball as much as we did the last few games of last season, but since our runningback, Chubb Small was injured, we had no run game and had to pass the ball far more. Junior Wesley Beardain, a 78 overall, will be handed the starting quarterback job, but if he does not perform well, he will be replaced by sophomore Brian Anderson. Our runningback, Chubb Small, is a senior this season, so he will get a lot of carries.

Thanks for the replies guys! If anybody has anymore questions, feel free to ask!

I'm about to play the West Virginia game and they're rated a B+ while we're rated a B-. This could be a possible upset. WVU seems to be a little overrated. I guess the departure of Steve Slaton hurt them. Unfortunately, I have to deal with Noel Devine.

Well, we were leading at the half, but the 3rd quarter was disastrous. Injury-prone Chubb Small was injured in the 2nd quarter, leaving our offense in peril. We used several backups, but none produced as we had -22 rushing yards, negative yardage! Wesley Beardain was forced to throw 30 passes, resulting in 4 costly interceptions. Next week, I'm going to start freshman Chris Smith, who has some speed and should be able to give us a little running threat. I am also going to switch to Hawaii's playbook to spread things out. We fall to 0-1 (0-0) on the year.

Wow, what a game! I knew the spread offense would open things up, but I did not know it would enable us to score 51 points, just 1 game after struggling to put 7 on the board versus West Virginia. Chris Smith solidified his starting job at the quarterback position as he passes fro 255 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions, and ran for another 31 yards and another touchdown. "I felt good out there", Smith said. "I felt I was in control of the game. I hope we can continue this next week." Marshall improves to 1-1 (0-0) with the huge win on the road.

Thanks! I hope we can continue rolling. Beating a Big 12 team on the road is definetely a start. I felt we let the WVU games slip from our grasp as we held the 7-6 lead at halftime, but unfortunately allowed them to score 22 unanswered points. In the Colorado game, we kept rolling and did not let up, which gave us the huge win. The Hawaii offense was fun to run too as it really allowed me to spread the ball around to different receivers.

Well, we got another win over a BCS Conference team, this time against the Cincinnati Bearcats out of the Big East. We came into Cincinnati looking to win against Brian Kelly's squad, and we accomplished our goal. Our offense, once again, looked great. Chris Smith is doing a great job calling the signals. Our defense played great until the 4th quarter, when they decided to let Cincinnati put 2 touchdowns on the board. Luckily, we got the ball back and held on to it for the win. We move to 2-1 (0-0) and face UCF in Huntington in our first Conference USA game next week.

Note: I have switched from All-American to Heisman for added difficulty.
