The Life and Times of Jonny Flynn

Ok, as March Madness approaches, I've had the urge to pick this game back up. However, I didn't just want to do another team legacy, but instead, a player lock. I've never done one of these, but for those who don't know, here's what I'll be doing.

    Player Lock: ON
    Camera: Player lock
    Halves: 12 minutes
    Difficulty: MOP
Player: Johnny Flynn, Fr PG, Syracuse

Flynn is one of my favorite players, and I'm going to try and take him to his junior year (at least, I think that's when he'll declare for the NBA).

It will be written in the perspective of a journalist who is following Flynn's career.

    Suggestions welcome.

Re: The Life and Times of Jonny Flynn

So, just who is this kid?
    David Meeks, suhoops.com

Johnny Flynn. The point guard out of Niagra Falls, NY has been given less attention than his co-frosh, PF Donte' Greene. Still, Flynn has an enourmous amount of talent, and will probably stay for at least 3 years at Syracuse.

Flynn was ranked the #4 PG by rivals.com, and #22 overall for his class. He scores, when needed. But what makes him such a great runner of the offense is his ability to create for his teammates and unselfishness. He's an above average shooter, and can finish even with contact. His on-ball defense is exceptional, as he'll probably average a couple steals per game.

What made him choose Syracuse over Buffalo and Canisius? Perhaps it's his new teammate, who isn't really that new. Sophmore SF Paul Harris was his teammate at Niagra Falls, and the two helped their school win the state championship two years ago. If they can do that, imagine what they can do on the college level.

Expect about 10 points, 5 assists, and 2 steals a game for Johnny this year, and hopefully he can lead this very young Syracuse team to an NCAA birth.

    -----

Forgot to mention, the only thing I will be doing legacy-wise is training Flynn. I won't train any other players, won't do any recruiting and the likes.

          (0-0) #18 Syracuse Orange...38...36...74

Orange come alive in second half
          Flynn drops 34 in debut

Jonny's first basket of his college career was a great and 1 shot from the free throw line. Unfortunately, they were down at the time. Siena took a 9-2 lead early on, but Jonny's basket led the Orange to a 12-0 run, where they never looked back, taking a 38-27 lead at the break. Flynn, despite being stuffed by the rim on a dunk (he made it up later with a sweet 1 hander), had 14 points, 5 assists, and 3 steals in the first half.

The second half is when Syracuse looked like the #18 team in the country. Their defense stepped it up tonight, holding the Saints to 51 points.

Flynn earned player of the game honors easily, with a near double double. "I'm happy I did well, but if our first half showed you anything, it's that we have a lot of work to do," the freshman commented.

Other notable Syracuse players were Donte' Greene, who also nearly had a double double, with 15 points and 9 rebounds, and Arinze Onuaku, with 8 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 blocks. SU's defense had 5 blocks and forced 12 turnovers, while only giving it up 3 times (2 were Jonny's).

The player Flynn was guarding, Ronald Moore, had 2 points, 6 assists, and 5 turnovers.

          Flynn's Stats: 34 points, 1 rebound, 9 assists, 5 steals, 1 turnover, 20 minutes (out of 24)
          11/21 FG, 4/6 3pt, 8/13 FT

(What's funny about his performance is this is exactly what Flynn did in real life in his debut against Siena. He had the most points a Syracuse player has ever had in his debut with like 27, topping C-Melo)

Syracuse will now play (1-0) Saint Joes in the second round tomorrow, after they edged out F. Dickinson.

            Syracuse advances
Flynn's second straight POTG leads defensive dominance

The fans were treated to an excellent ball game in the first half, as neither team took command. Following Eric Devendorf's buzzer beater from the top of the key, Syracuse narrowly held a 30-28 lead. Rebounds were absolutely killing the Orange, as the Hawks had more offensive rebounds (8) than 'Cuse did total (6). Jonny, however, led all scorers with 13 points.

The second half Syracuse still couldn't get anything going on offense. Coach Boeheim switched to man defense as his 2-3 was getting picked apart, and with the score tied at 34, Jonny Flynn took over. He sparked an Orange run with an NBA range three, then assisted a Donte' Greene three. On the other end, he picked the pocket of the St. Joes guard, had a wide open dunk, but instead threw up an alley, to which Greene ooped.

Saint Joes tried to come back, but to no avail, as Syracuse ended up winning, 62-46, in a defensive battle. The Orange did better in the second half, as they ended up losing the rebounding battle by 1, 22-23.

Flynn earned POTG honors again, while no other 'Cuse player finished in double digits. Rick Jackson (bench PF), Devendorf, and Greene all had 9. PG Govens for the Hawks, guarded by Flynn, had 5 points, 6 assists, and 5 turnovers.

            Flynn's Stats (POTG): 22 pts, 7 ast, 3 stl, 3 TO, 19 min
            7/12 FG, 1/4 3pt, 7/7 FT

Flynn's Comment: "I've just been attacking the rim relentlessly," he said of already going to the line 20 times this season. "Our defense has been playing sick, and I hope we can keep it up."

              Team Effort Lifts Orange
Syracuse dominates from start to finish
              David Meeks, SUhoops.com

Syracuse came out on fire, draining shots from outside and inside, as Fordham just didn't stand a chance tonight. Flynn and Devendorf's 10 first half points each helped the Orange to a convincing 47-32 halftime lead.

The reserves got some quality minutes in the second half, and showed that although this team is young, they have some fight in them. Flynn was quite alright with not playing as much in the second half, as Syracuse won 85-70.

Eric Devendorf stole the crown from Flynn for POTG honors, finishing with 17 points and 6 assists. Donte' Greene had 11 and 8 boards, and for the Rams PF Dunston had 19 and 10, as they turned it over a whopping 23 times.

              Flynn's Stats: 14 pts, 6 ast, 4 stl, 2 TO, 17 min
              6/9 FG, 1/2 3pt, 1/2 FT

Flynn's Comment: This was a quality win over a tough A-10 team, and I think now we're ready to go against a very good team in Washington.

I love watching Jonny play, he's easily the clutchest player on the team right now. I heard around he wants to stay all four years here to get a degree but eh, who knows. His average minutes should be around like 39.9 to keep it real.

He's definately going to stay at least til his Junior year. I don't think anybody will leave after this year. Donte is way too cocky and inconsistent, Harris doesn't have an outside shot, and Flynn isn't that consistent.

2OT thriller sees Greene take over, scores 35
                      Dave Meeks, SUhoops.com

Just like the Saint Joes game, this was a defensive battle in the first half. Both teams seemed to be testing each other out, not being too aggressive, as there was only 4 combined fouls. Flynn had his worst half of the year, scoring only 4 points with 4 assists, also being subbed out late with 2 fouls. Washington managed to turn it on late, taking a 31-28 lead.

Jonny picked up his 3rd foul within :30 of the second half, but played through it. His day countinued to get worse with 8 minutes left, as he picked up his 4th foul. Immediately following that, things got even worse for Syracuse when Paul Harris pulled his quad (out for 10 days). Luckily, Donte' Greene caught fire, and Flynn went back in the game with 4 minutes left, Syracuse leading 51-47.

Greene continued to pour it on, from key blocks to draining contested threes, he was the sole reason Syracuse held onto their lead. But for every three Greene hit, Husky sharpshooter Ryan Appleby had an answer. Following Flynn's 4th turnover, Washington cut the deficit to 1 with under a minute to play. Flynn missed a wide open three, but Rick Jackson got a key rebound, and Washington was forced to foul.

Flynn made both free throws, but Quincy Pondexter hit a three immediately for his 19th points, tying the g ame at 62. Flynn missed his three, and this was going to OT.

Within 30 seconds, Flynn picked up his 5th foul and had to watch his team from the sidelines. Syracuse fought back after Washington held the lead for most of the overtime, but couldn't take the lead, as this game was headed to double OT tied at 72.

The teams continued to throw punches, but neither would go down. Arinze Onuaku, 'Cuse down by 1, had two straight key offensive rebounds, the latter being a tip in to take the lead. On the other end, Donte' Greene had a huge block, and Onuaku had a block AND steal to seal the game for Syracuse, 91-88.

Despite being without their leading scorer for half the game (17 of 34 minutes), Donte Greene's player of the game performance lifted the Orange. He finished with 35 points, 14 rebounds, and 2 blocks in 32 minutes. Arinze Onuaku had 14 and 18 with 2 blocks himself, and Devendorf had 14 and 5 assists. For Washington, Pondexter had 24.

                      Flynn's Stats: 10 pts, 3 reb, 9 ast, 2 stl, 4 TO, 17 min (fouled out)
                      3/11 FG, 1/5 3pt, 3/4 FT

Flynn's Comment: "I sucked. You know what? I flat out sucked. Yeah, I almost had a double-double, but that don't mean ****. You know what? We won. That's all that matters."

Syracuse will now play #16 Texas A&M in the finals, after the Aggies flat out dominated the Buckeyes, 61-39. Flynn will be tasked with guarding veteran PG Dominique Kirk, 81 overall.

A&M holds off Orange in second half
                        David Meeks, SUhoops.com

Syracuse took control of the game from the get-go, led by none other than Jonny Flynn, who wanted to redeem his horrible game yesterday. The freshman had 9 points in the first four minutes, and finished with 19 in the first half on 3/3 shooting from downtown. Just as important, he didn't have a foul. He led them to a 35-25 halftime lead over the Aggies.

Unfortunatey for Flynn, nobody else was doing anything. Missed layups and open threes, the Aggies took a 44-39 lead with 4:00 left to play (yes, 4 points for Syracuse in the first 9 minutes).

2 minutes later, the Orange finally started to score. A couple threes later, and they held a narrow 50-49 lead. From then, neither team could hold a lead, going back and forth. The Aggies took a 4 point lead with :40 left, but Donte Greene took a pass from Flynn and drained a three, as the Orange now had t ofoul. Unfortunately, the Orange had 0 fouls in the half.

Syracuse had :15 to score, down 3. Flynn takes a three...blocked. Final score, 58-55.

In only 17 minutes Jonny was the leading scorer with 21 points, also adding 5 assists. Eric Devendorf was the onnly other player in double digits, with 10. SF Carter for A&M had 21 as well. The Orange shot 36% from the field, and 6/10 from the FT line. 4 more free throws, and 'Cuse wins.

                        Flynn's Stats: 21 pts, 2 reb, 5 ast, 2 stl, 1 TO, 17 min
                        8/17 FG, 3/6 3pt, 2/4 FT

Flynn's Comment: This is a tough loss to swallow. Yesterday it was foul problems, today it's offense. We got a lot of work to do.

"We were determined not to let that A&M game get to us," said Coach Boeheim after a dominant win over a tough A-10 team. "The Atlantic 10 has played us tough all year, and tonight was no different."

Practicing offense for several days should be fun, right? "Wrong," said Jonny Flynn. "I've never disliked offense so much after what we did in practice these past few days." It worked, as the Orange were on fire, forcing turnovers and getting many fast break points en route to a 43-32 halftime lead, where Flynn had 10 points.

After the Orange built an insurmountable lead, in came the subs, and 'Cuse continued to dominate. They outrebounded the Minutemen 44-30, and forced 24 turnovers. Paul Harris earned his first player of the game, with 20 points and 10 rebounds, and Arinze Onuaku was an absolute beast with 19 boards. Donte Greene added 17 points and 6 rebounds.

                            Flynn's Stats: 14 pts, 7 ast, 5 stl, 2 TO, 20 min
                            3/7 FG, 1/4 3pt, 7/13 FT

Flynn's Comment: This was a good comeback win for us. I just gotta keep attackin the rim like I do and we're good.

Next up for 5-1 Syracuse is Tulane.

                              Orange offense explodes
'Cuse takes care of business; overcomes 13 point deficit
                              David Meeks, SUhoops.com

The first half was nothing but scary. Tulane came out attacking the rim as much as possible, and got to the line 20 times in the first half. Syracuse was just missing shots left and right after a convincing win over UMass, and now found themselves down 42-29 at halftime. The main reason? Jonny Flynn had 3 fouls early on and didn't play much at all.

Jonny Flynn took it in his hands to turn things around. He came out and scored 17 second half points, for a total of 19 on the game. He sparked Eric Devendorf into having one of his best all around games of his career, going 4 rebounds away from a triple-double. Paul Harris and Donte' Greene suddenly got in the action on the defensive end, and were rewarded on offense. The Orange dominated the second half with 64 points, getting the 'W' 93-82.

Devendorf earned POTG honors with 13 points, 6 rebounds, and 10 assists. Harris and Greene both had 15, and for Tulane PF Gomez had 21 points. The Wave PG, Kevin Sims, had 6 points, 9 assists, and 3 turnovers.

                              Flynn's Stats: 19 pts, 3 ast, 1 stl, 3 TO, 4 fouls, 14 min
                              8/10 FG, 1/2 3pt, 2/2 FT

Flynn's Comment: I've gotta learn to stop fouling so much, because we almost blew this game early because of me.
