Re: The Life and Times of Jonny Flynn

    Week 7
    12/3 - 12/9

    T&C: Awareness, Skills, Durability

    Confidence: 84

    Flynn's Matchups
    12/3: @ (4-3) Virginia
PG Sean Singletary: Sr, 92 ovr, 85 3pt
Singletary is no doubt one of, if not the, best point guards in the nation. This will be Flynn's toughest matchup of the year, and depending on how he does, Syracuse could be upset here. Sean is a bit nicked up, but that shouldn't prevent him from playing.

    12/8: vs. (8-1) Rhode Island
SG Parfait Bitee: Sr, 73 ovr
SG Jimmy Baron: Jr, 76 ovr, 92 3pt
Rhode Island is a VERY good ball club, and Flynn may end up guarding Baron, one of the best longball shooters in the nation. This is easily one of the toughest weeks Flynn will have.

    Syracuse is now ranked #13.

    Flynn's averages: 19.1 ppg, 6.6 apg, 3.1 spg, 66% FT, 41% 3pt

    PRESS CONFERENCE WITH JONNY FLYNN

    Reporter:
Jonny, today Howie Crenshaw accepted a scholarship offer from Syracuse. He's the #7 PG in this year's class and was Virginia's Mr. BB. Do you think this will affect you at all next year?

Flynn: I try not to think about the future, but I'm not worried about playing time at all. As of now, we only have three guards on our roster (me, Devendorf, Scoop Jardine), so we need some more bodies in there. I can't wait to play with this kid and heard he has a sweet shot.

Reporter: The other two players Syracuse was targetting, 4* PF Brian Torbert and 5* SG Ralphy Evenstar, seemed very interested in Syracuse. Yet they decided to go to Georgetown and Pittsburgh, respectively.

    Flynn: Your question?

Reporter: Well, will there be any bad blood between you next year?

Flynn: Again, I'm not gonna think about that too much. I love rivalry competition, and right now, I'm thinking about the present. Right now I've gotta prepare for a big game against Virginia, so thank you.

      Flynn dominates Singletary
11 turnovers can't stop freshman from beating veteran
      David Meeks, SUhoops.com

Syracuse's first true road game matched a current elite point guard against a future elite. Who would come out on top, Sean Singletary or Jonny Flynn?

Flynn, although scoring 8 points, had 4 turnovers in the first half, which is much too high for him. Despite this, Syracuse jumped out to a 17 point lead early on. Virginia came back to narrow the deficit to 8 at halftime, 38-30, but Singletary could do nothing against Flynn's defense, with only 2 points (off free throws).

The Orange exploded out of the gates, taking an early 20+ point lead, leading to boos galore from the home crowd, and the subs got in early. Though Syracuse couldn't get anything going offensively in the later part of the half, it didn't matter, as they came away with the easy victory.

Flynn won the battle of PGs, even though he had a horrible night with turnovers. Singletary declined to talk afterwards, as he was stifled all night by Jonny. Flynn earned POTG honors with his performance, holding Singletary to 2 points, 2 assists, and 0/8 FG shooting (0/3 from three).

Flynn had 11 turnovers in the game, an atrocious performance, but also had 6 steals and 5 assists, also a season high 4 rebounds. Arinze Onuaku's 5 blocks helped Syracuse hold Virginia to 42 points, and 12 points in the second half (WOW).

      Flynn's Stats: 22 pts, 4 reb, 5 ast, 6 stl, 11 TO, 3 fouls, 20 min
      8/19 FG, 3/9 3pt, 3/7 FT

Flynn's Comment: I just wanted to show the nation that not only can I score, I can D up. I have all the respect in the world for Sean, and even though I had some dumb turnovers, tonight was our night.

        Carrier Dome, December 8th
        (8-2) Rhode Island Rams
        .........30...33...63
        (7-1) #13 Syracuse Orange.....33...31...64

        Career Night
Flynn does it himself, swishes game winning three
        David Meeks, SUhoops.com

Many thought Rhode Island would have a chance at upsetting the #13 ranked Orange, as their exceptional shooters could outscore Syracuse's poor offense. The Orange wanted nothing more than to keep this game as low scoring as possible.

Both teams came out even, and Rhode Island jumped out to a small lead for most of the half. That would chance with 2 minutes left, as Jonny Flynn attacked the rim following a steal on defense, and drew a foul to put the Orange up 2. Immediately after, he stole the in bounds pass and layed it in, putting 'Cuse up 27-23, forcing the Rams to call time. Flynn continued to make great shots, and his 17 points and 3 steals led Syracuse to a 33-30 halftime lead.

The freshman point guard would have to take control in the second half, as both teams battled back and forth. Nobody on Syracuse, besides Flynn, wanted to make a shot, whether it was Devendorf missing a wide open three or Harris being blocked on an easy lay up, Flynn had to do it himself.

Daniels for Rhode Island continued to shoot lights out though, with 27 points, putting the Rams up 4 on a three with under 2 minutes to go. Flynn again would answer the call, as he had to do it himself the entire half (nobody was making a shot), and with a minute to go, he stole the ball from Parfait Bitee, and went the length of the court, laying it up over two Rams, 63-61. Flynn would get a chance to tie the game or take the lead, as Rhode Island missed a shot with :16 to play.

Jonny's outside shot wasn't falling that much tonight, as he was 2/5 up to that point. Flynn drove with :08 left, couldn't find anything against the 2-3, and passed it opposite wing to Devendorf, who immediately passed it to the elbow to Onuaku. With :05 left, Onuaku passed it to the top of the key to Flynn, who was spotting up for three. He had only a little bit of room, but shot it over the oncoming Jimmy Baron, and hit nothing but net with 3 seconds left. Rhode Island's last shot would barely rim out, and Flynn was the hero.

An exhausted Flynn walked off the court as all 25,000 fans were on their feet. Jonny's performance easily won player of the game, as he finished with half of the Orange points in 22 minutes, the most he's played all year. Bitee finished with 8 points and 10 assists, Baron with 10 points, and Daniels had 27. Donte Greene added 12 and Onuaku had 10 rebounds.

Thanks in large part to Flynn, the Orange shot a fantastic 15/17 from the FT line.

        Flynn's Stats: 32 pts, 1 ast, 4 stl, 2 TO, 3 fouls, 22 min
        10/23 FG, 3/6 3pt, 9/11 FT

Flynn's Comment: This is why I play basketball every day, for nights like these. I just wanted to win, and even though I was getting hacked all night, I was getting to the free throw line, and converted. It was a great win for us, going into a matchup with the #2 team.

Re: The Life and Times of Jonny Flynn

          Week 8
          12/10 - 12/16

          T&C: Inside scoring, Defense, Durability

          Confidence: 94

          Flynn's Matchups:
          12/15: vs #1 North Carolina (7-1)
PG Ty Lawson: So, 89 ovr
Oh boy, if Flynn thought Singletary and Baron were tough, wait til he gets a load of the #1 team in the nation. Lawson will work him all night, and both these players are fast as hell, so it will be one of the most exciting matchups in the nation all year. Lawson is averaging 10 points and 6 assists.

Syracuse will have to give all they've got for this game, and they have a week to prepare. They match up fairly well, but there's no doubt UNC deserves to be the #1 team. The matchups will look like this.

          Ty Lawson (89)
          vs. Jonny Flynn (79)
Wayne Ellington (84) vs. Paul Harris (83)
Marcus Ginyard (79) vs. Eric Devendorf (84)
Tyler Hansbrough (90) vs. Arinze Onuaku (73)
Deon Thompson (72) vs. Donte Greene (82)

As you can see, some abnormal matchups there. Paul Harris (SF) is the better defender and will guard the sharpshooting Ellington, while Devendorf will guard the lesser Ginyard. Onuaku (C) is a much bigger, more physical player than Greene, and instead of guarding Thompson will guard 6'9'', 245 lb Hansbrough.

Syracuse jumps to #11 in the polls. Other BE teams include GTown (6), Louisville (10), Pitt (12), Marquette (17), and Notre Dame (23).

Flynn is 17th in the nation in PPG (20.9), and first in steals (3.6). He also averages 5.8 assists.

          Syracuse team stats

They're 8-1 this season, and 0-1 against the top 25. They have the #1 RPI, and are #7 in the coaches poll. They're offensive efficiency is #3 in the conference and #7 in the nation, given an A+ grade, as their average score margin is +10.9 (73.6 ppg). Surprisingly their defense is given a C+, despite holding teams to 62.7 ppg and forcing 13 TO.

They're second in the BE in SPG, with 9.6, second to Villanova's 9.7. They're #1 in blocks with 4.8, and turn it over only 9.7 a game, #1 in the conference.

UNC puts Orange on their heels
Danny Green & Co. too fast for 'Cuse, pull away in second half
            David Meeks, SUhoops.com

Many thought this game would be one of the games of the year, with the key matchup being at the PG spot, between two future stars, Ty Lawson, and Jonny Flynn. Flynn would win the statistical battle, but Lawson the game.

In the first half, both teams proved their ranking, as it was even steven the entire half, with North Carolina holding a slight edge at halftime, as their press started to rattle Syracuse and their up-tempo play was too much for the thin bench of the Orange, as they held a 38-35 lead at the break. Flynn, however, continued his dominant performance last week, scoring 19 in the half.

What was equal in the first half turned to lopsided in the second. The Tar Heels dominated the second half, as they ran up and down the court on Syracuse, and the Orange failed to respond on offense. Everything fell apart for 'Cuse, as they found themselves down 67-44 6 minutes into the second half. Danny Green exploded for UNC, nailing every three he took. The Heels ended up demorilizing #11 'Cuse, as they only scored 18 points in the second half.

Flynn couldn't get much going in the second half either, and had a whopping 8 turnovers because of the press. Green ended up with player of the game with 24 points, and Ty Lawson had 11 points with 8 assists. Arinze Onuaku had 8 points and 7 rebounds, as Syracuse had 15 turnovers, to UNC's 7.

            Flynn's Stats: 25 pts, 6 ast, 3 stl, 8 TO, 1 foul, 20 min
            9/20 FG, 2/6 3pt, 5/7 FT

Flynn's Comment: I had a pretty good game stat wise, but that's not what I was hoping for. We needed this game this point in the season. We came in thinking we were hot and underrated, but this loss shows us that we have a lot of work to do in order to become an elite team.

Yeah, Flynn's a beast on D for me.

Onuaku is frustrating me, because every time I give it to him, he'll give it RIGHT back. He gets most of his points off offensive rebounds.

Flynn played very well, as did the rest of the starters for once. Syracuse dominated from the get-go, taking a 48-37 halftime lead and finishing it off, 84-63. Devendorf had 14 points and 7 assists, Paul Harris had 15 and 7 rebounds, and Onuaku had a double-double with 11 points and rebounds. Flynn finished with 11 points, 8 assists, 3 steals, and 3 TO.

                        ---

                        (3-4) Cornell Big Red @ (9-2) #18 Syracuse

Greene exploded in this game with 27 points, making 12 free throws. Syracuse took a 45-32 lead at half, and finished strong 86-73. Flynn played very well with 20 points, 4 assists, and 3 steals. PG Louis Dale for Cornell had 13 points and 7 rebounds.

Vaden is one of the top players in C-USA, and Flynn may be tasked with guarding him. He's stepped up to the challenge of guarding other team's best players, so he should be able to do so on Sunday.

Syracuse moves up to #14 in the rankings, after beating two cupcakes.

Flynn has career high 17 assists in comeback win
                            David Meeks, SUhoops.com

The first half didn't go too well for the Orange, as they found themselves down at half, 31-27. Flynn had a measly 3 points on 1/7 shooting, but 5 assists. UAB's perimeter shooters were killing any defense Syracuse threw at them, as Vaden had 7 points and SF Kinnard had 11. It didn't help that Donte Greene pulled his quad early in the game (out 13 days) and couldn't play much.

Coach Boeheim must have said something at halftime, because the Orange came out on fire. Jonny Flynn had 5 assists in the first 5 minutes of the second half, which gave him 10 for the game, his career high. The occasional Syracuse press rattled the Blazers, as the crowd exploded and forced UAB to call a time out, Syracuse holding a 9 point lead.

The Orange continued to dominate for the remainder of the half, until the Blazers finally started to crawl back, cutting the lead to 6 with 2 minutes remaining. Luckily the 'Cuse defense stepped up and prevented UAB from doing anything else, pulling away 77-66.

Eric Devendorf finally caught fire tonight, finishing with 26 points on 6/11 3pt shooting, also contributing with 5 assists. But he didn't get player of the game, as that went to Jonny Flynn, who although struggled to score at times, had a career high 17 asssists and 15 points, playing the entire second half for the first time this year. Paul Harris and Donte' Greene both had 10 points.

                            Flynn's Stats: 15 pts, 2 reb, 17 ast, 2 stl, 6 TO, 1 foul, 25 min
                            6/16 FG, 1/3 3pt, 2/3 FT

Flynn's Comment: Tonight our shooters were just feeling it, and I gotta thank Eric (Devendorf) for all those assists. This is a big win for us goin into conference play.

St. John's gives 'Cuse a scare, but starters dominate late
                                David Meeks, SUhoops.com

As Syracuse entered Big East play with only 2 losses, they were feeling good about themselves. They felt even better after the first half, as Jonny Flynn's 11 points and Paul Harris' 9 rebounds led the Orange to a 47-38 advantage at halftime.

St. John's came out with a vengeance in the second half, though, as Eugene Lawrence was carving through the 2-3 defense like a knife on butter, and the Storm tied the game with 5 minutes remaining. Arinze Onuaku would have none of that, as he dominated the small St. John's lineup late, earning his first POTG and led Syracuse back to the 6 point victory.

Onuaku had 19 points and 11 rebounds, and Paul Harris had 10 points and 12 boards. Devendorf and Greene finished with 12 and 10 points, and Lawrence had 13 for St. John's.

                                Flynn's Stats: 16 pts, 7 ast, 1 stl, 2 TO, 3 fouls, 21 min
                                6/7 FG, 2/2 3pt, 2/2 FT

Flynn's Comment: It's always great to get your first win in conference play, and in the Big East, each win matters.
