    (7-7) South Florida Bulls
    .........32...20...52
    (12-2) #14 Syracuse Orange...31...41...72

    Second half dominance leads Orange
Flynn gets second double-double, tangle Bulls
    David Meeks, SUhoops.com

The first half went like most Syracuse first halves, as the Bulls stood their ground against the Orange, holding a narrow 32-31 lead at halftime. Jonny Flynn led all scorers with 12 points and 5 assists, but USF was getting everyone involved on offense, and Syracuse couldn't focus on any one player.

The second half also went like most Syracuse second halves. They came right off the bat and dominated the second half, holding the Bulls to 15 points before they scored 5 more in the final minute. 'Cuse shot 59% from the field, and surprisingly, with BE star Kentrell Gransberry in the middle for USF, outrebounded the Bulls 24-19.

Flynn won player of the game again, with his second double-double, 19 points and 10 assists. Donte Greene was the receiver of many of those passes, with 18 points and 7 rebounds. Paul Harris had 12 and 5, and Devendorf had 11 points. PG Solomon Bozeman led South Florida with 14 points and 6 assists.

    Flynn's Stats: 19 pts, 10 ast, 4 stl, 6 TO, 2 fouls, 21 min
    8/16 FG, 1/5 3pt, 2/2 FT

Flynn's Comment: We're really startin to come together as a team, and if we keep it up, we could fly under the radar I think.

        Fifth Third Arena, January 9th
        (13-2) #10 Syracuse Orange
        ....33...34...12(OT)...79
        (8-6) Cincinnati Bearcats.........37...30...15(OT)...82

18 point comeback falls short in OT
Cincy sharpshooters too much for Syracuse, upset Orange
        David Meeks, SUhoops.com

In a near carbon copy of the USF game, Cincinnati held a slight edge over the Orange in the first half, 37-33. Both teams had nearly identical stats, but the Bearcats were deadly from long range, as they were 5/10 from beyond the arc. Flynn and Greene both had 11 points to lead all scorers.

Unlike the USF game, Cincinnati dominated the beginning of the second half. They jumped out to an 18 point lead 4 minutes into the half, and all looked lost. But when you have the talent 'Cuse has, no deficit is insurmountable. Jonny Flynn led his team back, cutting it to 2 points following his three, 58-60 with 3:00 left.

The Orange would finally tie it up with a minute to play, after Flynn drained a jumper from the top of the key, 65-65. The press off the inbounds gave Donte Greene a steal in Syracuse's half of the court, and he passed it to a streaking Flynn for the dunk and the lead seconds later. Cincy would tie it up, and after missed shots on both ends, this game was headed to OT.

Cincy took an early lead, and after Syracuse tied it up with :40 left, Deonta Vaughn answered with a three to put the 'Cats up. Flynn failed to answer, and Cincinnati came away with the upset, 82-79.

Vaughn finished with 19 and 5 assists, but SF Mitchell had POTG with 29 points and 6/14 3pt shooting. Flynn and Devendorf both came close to a double-double, as Devendorf had 21 points and 7 assists. Donte Greene added 13 and 7 rebounds.

        Flynn's Stats: 25 pts, 1 reb, 7 ast, 3 stl, 4 TO, 24 min
        7/27 FG, 3/13 3pt, 8/8 FT

Flynn's Comment: I shot it 27 times. That's bad, even if I make a lot. I failed to answer my team's call when we needed it most, and missed some big shots down the stretch. I feel like this loss was my fault.

West Virginia hands 'Cuse second straight loss led by three point shooting
            David Meeks, SUhoops.com

Syracuse were given their second straight loss tonight, as West Virginia came right off the bat and took control of this game. Just like the Cincy game, shooting from beyond the arc played a key role in beating the Orange.

The Mountaineers' press got to 'Cuse early and often, giving Jonny Flynn fits throughout the night (9 turnovers for the frosh). Though a balanced scoring attack helped the Orange, their defense, usually very good, did not play well tonight at all. WVU ripped through their 2-3 defense and even man, and by half it was 45-34.

Things got even worse in the second half, as the Mountaineers jumped to a 14 point lead at one point. Midway through the half, Coach Boeheim threw a new press at WVU, the 1-2-1-1, and it brought 'Cuse back immediately, going on a 14-2 run and cutting the lead to 1. That was as close as they'd get, as West Virginia came to and pounded 'Cuse in the final minutes.

Huggin's squad was led by SF Butler, who made 6 threes and had a game high 33 points. Joe Alexander had 14 and 7 rebounds, and Darris Nichols had 15 assists to go with 8 points. The Mountaineers shot 11/26 from beyond the arc, while 'Cuse shot 6/19. Donte Greene had 13 and 5 steals, and Arinze Onuaku had 12 points and 7 rebounds.

            Flynn's Stats: 31 pts, 3 reb, 5 ast, 4 stl, 9 TO, 1 foul, 22 min
            13/28 FG, 4/13 3pt, 1/2 FT

Flynn's Comment: I shot a lot again tonight, and even though I had 31, 9 turnovers is killin' me. We gotta step up now, or the season could be lost.

Syracuse responds to two losses by beheading Knights
                David Meeks, SUhoops.com

After two tough losses to middle of the road teams, Syracuse needed this win against Rutgers, and they got it, 82-71.

Though the Knights stuck with the Orange, 'Cuse eventually took them out of the game in the second half, by taking a 20 point lead. The Scarlet Knights, led by PF Inman, who had 24 points and 12 boards, cut the lead to 7 at one point, but no closer. Donte' Greene and Jonny Flynn took away any chance by hitting two consecutive threes, and the game was done.

Syracuse finally had another team game, as several players were close to double-doubles, with Greene having 18 and 9 rebounds, and Paul Harris with 12 points and 8 boards. Arinze Onuaku contributed 3 blocks, and Eric Devendorf had 11 and 5 assists.

                Flynn's Stats: 12 pts, 9 ast, 2 stl, 2 TO, 2 fouls, 22 min
                3/7 FG, 2/4 3pt, 4/6 FT

Flynn's Comment: This was definately a great team win, and I think Coach put us on the right track after we lost those games.

Villanova's shooters struggle against upstart Orange
                  David Meeks, SUhoops.com

Villanova was simply...atrocious in the first half. Their good set of three point shooters could not buy a shot, as they shot 29% from the field, while Syracuse was on the complete opposite side of the spectrum, shooting 71%. Syracuse made 7/10 threes, while 'Nova was 3/15, as Flynn and Devendorf combined for more points (24) than the entire Wildcats' team, en route to a 45-20 massacre.

They'd have to do better, right? Well, a little bit. They managed to score 33 points in the second half, but then again, that was against the Syracuse reserves half the time. It was just a horrible night for Wildcat fans, but a great one for Syracuse going into their rivalry game with Georgetown.

Jonny Flynn earned yet another POTG, with 26 points and 6 assists in only 18 minutes, despite having 8 turnovers. Eric Devendorf did great on the defensive end, with 5 steals and 11 points. And Scoop Jardine had 16 for the Orange, in 12 minutes. Scottie Reynolds had a bad game, with 12points, 5 assists, and 6 turnovers, and Corey Fisher shot 2/10 from downtown for 6 points. SF Clark had 22 points, and 'Nova shot 35% on the game, and were outrebounded 16-28.

                  Flynn's Stats: 26 pts, 6 ast, 3 stl, 8 TO, 2 fouls, 18 min
                  11/18 FG, 4/7 3pt

Flynn's Comment: Big win over a rival tonight, and another rival coming up soon. Our defense stepped it up, and this week couldn't have gone better.

Hibbert's 20 lead Georgetown as they never trail in rivalry matchup
                          David Meeks, SUhoops.com

Jonny Flynn couldn't do much more to help his team tonight, as even though he scored 27 and had 7 dimes, Roy Hibbert's 20 points and Georgetown's defense helped the Hoyas dominate in the first matchup of these two bitter rivals.

GTown went up by 10 early on in the first half, but Syracuse, like always, creeped back into it. Coach Boeheim said he knew the game was over when Jonathan Wallace hit a buzzer beater three, while getting fouled at the end of the first half to put John Thompson's team up 31-26 at break.

The second half is when Syracuse really started to make a run, as they tied the game several times. Whenever they did though, the #3 team would just get their lead back up to 6 or 8. The Orange never led in the game, as their offensive woes (4/15 3pt shooting) doomed them, despite forcing 13 turnovers.

Wallace had 16 points on 4/7 3pt shooting, and Patrick Ewing Jr. had 13 points and 8 rebounds. Hibbert had 20 and 5, and Paul Harris had 13 and 5 boards, and 4 steals for the Orange. Syracuse only had 2 bench points, belonging to Scoop Jardine.

                          Flynn's Stats (POTG): 27 pts, 7 ast, 5 stl, 3 TO, 3 fouls, 21 min
                          10/23 FG, 3/7 3pt, 4/4 FT

Flynn declined to comment on the game.

                            Jonny Flynn Press Conference
                            January 22nd, 2008

Reporter: Jonny, what did you think of the game last night?

Flynn: I think we still need some work, and again, we showed we're not yet at that elite status. Quite honestly, I can't think of any one spot we need work on. We need to work on all aspects of our game for the remainder of the season.

Reporter: You're averaging 20.8 points and 6.9 assists, and are a frontrunner for Big East Player of the Year. Do you feel your teammates aren't putting in as much effort?

Flynn: What? Are you serious right now man? Yeah, I've got 20 somethin' points, but does that mean I'm working harder than my team? Yeah, I'm workin' hard, but Paul's (Harris) knee has been hurtin all year, Donte's been hurt, not to mention all those players we got on the bench who work just as ****in' hard. This is why I don't like these press conferences, cause of ****heads like you.

Flynn sprains ankle, Friars hold on for upset
                              David Meeks, SUhoops.com

Jonny Flynn, no doubt the Orange MVP thus far, sprained his ankle with a minute left in the first half tonight, with Syracuse down by 4. Luckily, his status is positive and it doesn't look to be severe.

Still, even with Flynn, Syracuse looked lost out there in the first half. Providence's shooters were lights out, and rebounding absolutely killed the Orange, as Geoff McDermott grabbed 10. 'Cuse played, well, average, and you can't play average against a very talented team in Providence, as they were up at half, 37-30. Flynn had nearly all of the Orange points, as he had 20 in the first half! He went down with a minute left, after taking a hard spill after driving to the basket, clutching his ankle immediately. 'Cuse fans thought the worse, but were relieved to see him walk off the court on his support.

There was stlil a game to be played, and the Orange simply lacked the confidence and energy to make any sort of real comeback. Providence hit their free throws down the stretch, and all the baskets in the world couldn't save 'Cuse, as they went down for a second straight time, 64-61.

Eric Devendorf had 15 points and 3 assists in his absence, and Donte Greene added 10. Arinze Onuaku had 8 and 9 boards, and SF McKenzie of the Friars had 12 points, while Stefon Curry had 11.

                              Flynn's Stats: 20 pts, 5 ast, 2 stl, 2 TO, 1 foul, 12 min
                              5/11 FG, 3/8 3pt, 7/10 FT

Flynn's Comment: Once again I apolgize for my break out earlier in the week, and I think my ankle should be alright for next game. We have to pick it up soon.

(Note: once Flynn went down, I simmed the rest of the game. Diagnosis says only 2 days.)
