      Husky Revenge
Flynn's double-double can't help Syracuse, UConn scores upset
      David Meeks, SUhoops.com

"There comes a point in time where you gotta say, 'what more could go wrong'"? That's all Coach Boeheim had to say about tonight's game, where they got completely dominated in every aspect against Connecticut. The Huskies avenged their loss earlier in the season, by thoroughly crushing the Orange, 82-69.

The Huskies just could not miss all game (63% FG), and dominated the boards (24-12, 9-2 off), and their press just frustrated Syracuse, forcing 16 turnovers. Instead of going to AJ Price like last time, the guy who stepped up was Craig Austrie, who finished with 28 on 4/8 3pt shooting. He had 16 in the first half, and even though the Orange thought they were close in the first half, they weren't, and following a Stanley Robinson buzzer beater dunk, went into the lockers down by 9. Flynn played great however, with 12 points and 8 assists in the half.

Things just got worse in the second half, and no matter what defense or offense the Orange tried, nothing worked. The Huskies were just perfect all game, and the young Syracuse team seemed a bit out of place in the Verizon Center, as the pressure was on to perform. The only good thing of the second half, was that Flynn had a double double within the first minute.

All 5 starters for UConn finished in double digits (Price 11, Robinson 18, Adrien 10, Thabeet 11), while only Jonny Flynn and Eric Devendorf did for the Orange (both had 19). Harris and Greene both had 7, and Onuaku had 9, and only 2 rebounds, which is way too little for him.

      Flynn's Stats: 19 pts, 15 ast, 3 stl, 7 TO, 2 fouls, 24 min
      7/16 FG, 3/7 3pt, 2/2 FT

Flynn's Comment: I just don't think we were prepared at all really. UConn seemed so on tonight, and there was nothing we could do to stop them really. None of us were really aggressive, and just let them attack us again and again.

I know the BET is supposed to be in Madison Square, but I searched and searched for MSG, but just couldn't find it. I figured I had to do a nuetral site, so I did the Verizon Center (GTown's, Washington Wizards). I have to tell ya, if you've never played a player lock game, with crowd sounds and everything turned all the way up, on a nuetral court against a rival, I suggest you do it. People say this game doesn't have atmosphere? Try that.

          Selection Sunday
          Sunday, March 16th

Greg Gumble: Welcome everyone, we're going to get right to it, as here are the #1 seeds, the moment everyone's been waiting for. March Madness is here!

Clark: But first, the BUBBLE TEAMS! Who will be in? Texas (20-13) looks to be in, and Rhode Island (25-11) should be in with their great record. Boston College (18-12) might miss out.

Greg: Let's look at the top 4 teams in each region, shall we?

          East
          1 UCLA
          2 Syracuse
          3 Arizona
          4 Duke

          South
          1 Michigan State
          2 Louisville
          3 Vanderbilt
          4 Gonzaga

          Midwest
          1 Kansas
          2 Kentucky
          3 North Carolina
          4 Providence

          West
          1 Pittsburgh
          2 Memphis
          3 Georgetown
          4 New Mexico

Clark: Pittsburgh really surprised everyone with their run in the BET. I think they'll be the first #1 seed to be taken out this year.

Greg: Clark, what do you think is the hardest region?

Clark: The East is definatley looking tough. UCLA is the #1 overall team, and a potential 4/5 matchup with Connecticut and Duke is looking very juicy. Arizona as a #3 seed, and Indiana as a #7 just shows how deep this region is. Then you have Syracuse at 2, a team who disappointed in their conference tourney but has the talent to go far this year.

          Greg: The easiest?

Clark: The West looks very weak. Pittsburgh is no doubt the weakest 1 seed, but it looks like they have a very easy road to the Elite 8 (having to play #16 Hampton, #8 Saint Marys, and #4 New Mexico/#5 Texas A&M potentially).

Greg: Now a look at the conference breakdown. The Big East has a fantastic 8, while the Big 12 and A-10 relly surprised with 6. The Big Ten got a mere 2, while the SEC, Pac 10, and ACC all had 5.

Clark: MORE BUBBLE TEAMS! Texas got in, as did Saint Louis. Boston College is the biggest surprise getting in, while Utah, Cal, Auburn, and Illinois all missed out.

Greg: Now that we've revealed all the brackets, who do you see in the final four, and who are your sleepers?

Clark: I like UCLA in the East, but look out for Duke, who seems to be a bit angry after being snubbed to a #4 seed. In the South, I think #2 Louisville has a pretty easy road, and can beat Michigan State. For my sleeper, I think #11 Rhode Island has the shooters to do some damage. The Midwest is definately tough, and I think #3 North Carolina has the most potential. #9 Tennessee could upset Kansas I think, and go pretty far. In the weak West, #3 Georgetown is definately the favorite, with #5 Texas A&M the sleeper, as I think they could upset Pittsburgh if they meet.

And in the final four, I see UCLA beating Louisville, and North Carolina beating Georgetown. Then I predict North Carolina as your national champions.

Greg: Thanks Clark, now we'll take a closer look at the East regional.

            'Cuse catapults the Catamounts
Devendorf scores 28, Orange advance easily
            David Meeks, SUhoops.com

When asked about what he thought of Syracuse's position in the tourney, Jonny Flynn responded, "We're all extremely happy to be a 2 seed, as after being snubbed last year, maybe the commitee decided to repay us (laughs). We think we can definately go far this year, and we're not looking forward to next year at all."

Well, Flynn didn't need to do much tonight, playing only 15 minutes, as Syracuse dominated Vermont from start to finish, and never once trailed. There isn't much else to say, as this was pretty expected for the Orange. The defense played very well in the second half, holding the Catamounts to 25 points, and blocking 8 shots while forcing 19 turnovers.

Devendorf had 28 and 6 assists for POTG, Paul Harris had 15 and 12 rebounds, and Donte Greene had 18 and 8 and 4 blocks.

            Flynn's Stats: 8 pts, 3 reb, 4 ast, 1 stl, 1 blk, 2 TO, 3 fouls, 15 min
            2/9 FG, 1/6 3pt, 3/6 FT

Flynn's Comment: I didn't play well at all tonight, couldn't shoot or pass. But we still blew them out, right? That's what makes our team so great. If you shut down one of us, another player will step up big.

Greg: Wow, what a great first round, Clark. Tons of upsets and buzzer beaters. What upsets did you like, and what second round games will you be looking forward to?

Clark: Well, I did not see Connecticut losing in the first round. Duke narrowly escaped an upset against cinderella George Mason with a buzzer beater, which was quite a finish. Two upsets will face each other in the second round, Pacific and Oregon, which should be fun to watch. Syracuse and Indiana will be amazing to watch in the East.

Greg: And in the South, surprsingly the only upset was #10 Texas over #7 Southern Illinois, which many predicted. The 'Horns will face off against your pick, Louisville. Many see that game as the featured game in the South.

Clark: Agree there. In the Midwest, my sleeper Tennessee nailed Baylor and will face off against #1 Kansas. Two BE teams will square off in the 4/5 spot, 5 WVU and 4 Providence. #10 Clemson upset #7 Xavier in the only real upset. Hard to pick just one great game, but I am loving #6 Marquette and #3 North Carolina.

Greg: Several upsets in the West, where 12 Temple beat 5 Texas A&M, and 13 TCU beat a pretty overrated 4 New Mexico. 10 Alabama beat 7 Kansas State, and will play Memphis, who simply destroyed Kent State. 6 Oklahoma and 3 Georgetown is lookking pretty good right now.

Madness Results in 18 Point Comeback
Orange fight their way back, Greene's bucket advances 'Cuse
              David Meeks, SUhoops.com

This game looked to be another Connecticut, as Indiana couldn't miss a three, going 6/7 in the first half en route to a 14 point lead. Syracuse couldn't do much right, as Eric Gordon had 12 points.

Things continued just like UConn in the second half, as the Hoosiers built an 18 point lead. Slowly but surely, from the 8 minute mark on, Syracuse inched back into the game, three by three, bucket by bucket. The defense suddenly turned it on, and the Orange cut the lead to 3 with about 6 minutes left, but could never tie. The Orange finally tied it up at 67 with a minute remaining, following two threes by Flynn and Devendorf.

With the score tied, and a 5 second shot clock difference, Syracuse had the ball. Jonny Flynn waited til there was :10 left on the shot clock, drove the lane, and handed it off to Donte' Greene, who sank the 4 footer with :07 left. Indiana tried to get the ball to Eric Gordon, but couldn't, and their center ended up taking a three, and following an air ball, the Orange escaped.

Flynn eanred POTG, with 1 assist away from a double double. Devendorf had 12 and 4 steals, and 5/8 3pt shooting, and Paul Harris had 12 and 5 rebounds. Eric Gordon finished with 18, and Ratliff had 17 off the bench for the Hoosiers, who only made one three in the second half (7/10 on the game). Despite being outrebounded 25-15, the Orange forced 16 turnovers and had 7 blocks (4 by Onuaku).

              Flynn's Stats: 21 pts, 9 ast, 4 stl, 6 TO, 3 fouls, 24 min
              8/16 FG, 3/6 3pt, 2/2 FT

Flynn's Comment: Man, this was my initiation into March Madness. This is why this is the best playoff system out there, for games like these. It was a joy to be in, and I have to commend Indiana for a great game.

              Greg:
Well Clark, there was no shortage of excitement in the second round. What was your favorite game?

Clark: It's hard not to say the Syracuse-Indiana game. Two classic teams facing off, and you gotta love the heart of Jonny Flynn and that Syracuse team. That East regional is looking more and more entertaining as this thing progresses. That Duke-UCLA game is looking fantastic as well.

Greg: In the South, #1Michigan State upended #8 LSU by 4, and #5 Stanford beat #4 Gonzaga by 1 in another great game. It looks like your final four team was upset, as they lost to #10 Texas in a great game by 4, who willl play #3 Vanderbilt.

Clark: But I did get something right, in the Midwest, as #9 Tennessee upset #1 Kansas. Did I not call it? They'll play #4 Providence. #3 UNC controlled #6 Marquette, and will face off in a game between two old time teams, North Carolina and #2 Kentucky.

Greg: And finally, in the West, Pittsburgh survived a late #8 Saint Mary's run, and #12 Temple crushed #13 TCU. #2 Memphis was upset by #10 Alabama by 4, and will face off against your pick, #3 Georgetown.

'Cuse dominate on offense, advance to Elite 8

                  David Meeks, SUhoops.com

Syracuse knew they were going to win this game tonight. It wasn't cockyness, it was confidence, and they knew that after a very close game with Indiana, they wouldn't let that happen again.

Jonny Flynn hit a three to start the first half (4/5 for the game), and from then on, the Orange never trailed. Led by Flynn and Donte' Greene, Syracuse took a commanding 49-40 lead, as the two combined for 22 points, holding Oregon high scorer Bryce Taylor to a mere 3 points.

Duck fans would have nothing to quack about in the second half either, as Syracuse came out and took a 28 point lead early on, and the subs kept the run going throughout. "It was a great win for this school," said Boeheim. "We wanted to show how even though we're a young team, we've got the talent anad heart to go deep."

Greene had POTG as he had one of his best games of his career, with 28 points, 11 rebounds, 6 assists, 4 steals, and 4 blocks. Paul Harris had 14 and 8, and Onuaku added 10. The bench had 23 points for Syracuse. Taylor finished with 11 for the Ducks, and Porter had 17.

                  Flynn's Stats: 22 pts, 4 reb, 4 ast, 1 stl, 3 TO, 3 fouls, 20 min
                  5/6 FG, 4/5 3pt, 8/10 FT

Flynn's Comment: As we keep goin through the tourney, I get more and more excited. I feel like a kid living out my dreams, and it's great that we've gone far, but I'm not satisfied yet.

                    Sweet 16 Review
With Greg Gumble and Clark Kellog

                    1 UCLA - 68
                    4 Duke - 83

                    11 Oregon - 72
                    2 Syracuse - 99

Greg: Well Clark, another round is in the books. Contrary to the past rounds, the Sweet 16 had many blowouts and only a couple close games. In the East, #4 Duke dominated #1 UCLA and won 93-68, led by Kyle Singler's 19 and 11 and 4 blocks. They'll face off against #2 Syracuse, who dismantled #11 Oregon, with Donte' Greene's 28 points. That should be a great game.

Clark: You're right Greg, that Singler-Greene matchup should be great, as well as Greg Paulus and Jonny Flynn, but I think Duke will come out on top, they're just too well coached and balanced.

Greg: And in the South, #5 Stanford was crushed by #1 Michigan State, 81-65, led by Raymar Morgan's 16 and 11. They'll play cinderella #10 Texas, who dismantled #3 Vanderbilt, 104-79, with Augustin and Abrams combining for 59 points.

Clark: I like Texas in that matchup actually, I think they have the guards to compete with Neitzel and Co.

Greg: And #9 Tennessee's miracle run was ended in the Midwest, as they lost by 3 to #4 Providence, who will play #3 North Carolina. UNC edged out #2 Kentucky, 96-93, led by Tyler Hansbrough's 31 points.

Clark: North Carolina was my pick earlier, and they'll stay my pick.

Greg: Finally, in the West, your overrated team, #1 Pittsburgh, was upended by another cinderella, #12 Temple, who crushed them. Your pick from this region, #3 Georgetown, will play them as they beat #10 Alabama handily. I'll just go ahead and assume Georgetown is your pick there.
Well that's it for us here in the review show, we'll see you back in a couple days for the Elite 8!

Blue Devils balanced attack upsets Syracuse, sends them packing
                      David Meeks, SUhoops.com

"I don't want to take anything away from Duke, they deserved this win, but we should have played better and won this game," said a frustrated, yet not angered Coach Boeheim. The Orange never led for most of the first half and the entire second.

Duke was simply too balanced to target one player. Kyle Singler had 11 points in the first half, as their 5 offensive rebounds helped them to a 7 point lead at halftime. Syracuse led briefly, 15-14 early on, but that was the only time. Paul Harris and Donte' Greene each had 9 in the first half.

In the second half, the Orange would find themselves down 18 at one point. Turnovers were killing 'Cuse, even though they had less than Duke (14-18). In fact, the only stat Duke was better in than Syracuse was FG% (59-51). Still, the Orange played conservative all game, and just didn't look like they wanted to win.

They would catch fire with about a minute and a half to go, when theyh were down 15. They cut the lead to 7 with a minute left, to 5 with :30 left, and 4 with :15 left, but it was all for naught, as Demarcus Nelson and his POTG performance would quiet 'Cuse.

Nelson had 34 points, and Greg Paulus had 13, 11 assists, and 5 steals, and Kyle Singler had 19 points and 9 boards. Eric evendorf had 5 steals with 13 points, and Paul Harris had 13 as well. Donte' Greene finished with 15, and Arinze Onuaku had 12 rebounds. No bench player scored for 'Cuse.

                      Flynn's Stats: 26 pts, 9 ast, 5 stl, 10 TO, 2 fouls, 22 min
                      8/17 FG, 2/8 3pt, 8/9 FT

Flynn's Comment: It was a really good season for a really young team. We don't have much depth, but we'll be good for years to come. It was disappointing, yeah, and I didn't play well at all. 10 turnovers from your PG wont win you any games, and a lot of blame on this loss should go to me.

                        Syracuse Press Conference
                        March 31st, 2008

Reporter: Coach Boeheim, what did you think of your team this year?

Boeheim: I think we showed a lot of heart with a very young team. We're in an extremely tough conference, and to get a #2 seed after missing the tournament last year is superb. These guys are a lot of fun to coach, I just wish we could have done a little bit more.

Reporter: Experts say you'll have all of your players back for next year, how much does that help?

Boeheim: I think it helps tremendously of course, with the core we have in place right now, we should be very good for years to come.

Reporter: Jonny, why do you think you lost last night?

Flynn: Well, of course there are a number of reasons. But I think Duke just played very well, I give them all the props in the world, and we just were off that night, that's all. We just gotta move on.

Reporter: Will you, Donte' (Greene), or Paul (Harris) be leaving for the NBA?

Flynn: Right now, that's out of the question for me. I'm not gonna speak for Donte' or Paul, but I've talked to them before and they're in agreement with me. We want a championship.

Reporter: Mr. Devendorf, what do you think your team needs to improve on for the 08/09 season?

Devendorf: I think with a couple recruits coming in, we'll have a lot more depth. We don't have many guards, and with Andy (Rautins, SG who tore his achilles before the season) coming back, we'll have more experience and shooters.

Reporter: How will you handle being one of the lone seniors on the team?

Devendorf: Same way I handled being the oldest this year, nothing's changed.

Boeheim: THank you all, we've got to head out now.

                        Elite 8 Review
With Greg Gumble and Clark Kellog

Greg: Another round is in the books, and the final four is set! Let's get right down to the results of the Elite 8. In the East regional, #4 Duke upset #2 Syracuse, 78-71. There's no doubt this will be a team to reckon with for the next couple rounds, as they've already knocked off the overall #1 team, UCLA, and now Syracuse.

Clark: No doubt Greg. But they'll have a tough matchup against #3 Georgetown of the West, who escaped a close one with cinderella #12 Temple, 80-78.

Greg: Agreed, it'll be tough for Duke to matchup with the height of the Hoyas. In the south, #10 Texas lost by a buzzer beater from #1 Michigan State's Drew Neitzel, 78-76. What a game that was, and will go down in history as one of the best games in tournament history.

Clark: And they'll play #3 North Carolina, who *ahem* I predicted would be in the final 4, as well as Georgetown. The Heels ran all over #4 Providence, 94-85, led by Ty Lawson's 16 and 6.

Greg: Well, who do you see in the national championship?

Clark: I see North Carolina beating MSU, and Georgetown beating Duke.

                          Final Four Review
With Greg Gumble and Clark Kellog

Greg: This is the moment every team's season wants to end up at, the Final Four! Who will it be?

Clark: Did I not tell you Greg?! How good am I?! Come on, tell me I'm good.

                          Greg: Oh, you're good.

                          Awkward silence

Greg: Well, Georgetown upended #4 Duke, 74-71. Kyle Singler had a game high 16 points, but Roy Hibbert's 13 paced the Hoyas.

Clark: And on the other side, #3 North Carolina was too much for #1 Michigan State, 89-83. Allen's 20 points couldn't help the Spartans, as Ty Lawson played phenomonally with 17 points, 8 rebounds, and 13 assists. Danny Green added 19.

Greg: Well Clark, here we are, who do you see winning the NC?

Clark: This will be a very close game, but I think Lawson and Hansbourgh can shake off the Hoyas to become the National Champs. It should be very interesting with a fast paced team like UNC and a methodical team like GU.

The 07/08 season is in the books, Clark, and it looks like you were finally wrong!

                          Clark: You're right, I'm wrong.

Greg: Georgetown dominated in the second half after being down 34-36 in the first, and outscored the Tar Heels 47-28 in the second, en route to an 81-64 National Championship victory.

Clark: Roy Hibbert was POTG with 22 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 blocks. What a performance!

Greg: Psycho T for UNC had 29 and 6 boards, but no other Tar Heel was in double digits. Congradulations to the Hoyas!

Tough loss there man, hate to see the Cuse losing to the dukies, but it is what it is, and this team will be back with a vengeance. I'm doing the same thing with player lock but, I use Paul Harris who is a completely different player then flynn so its different, having a lot of fun so far, I also took out wright, and devendorf before I started to make up for the losses tho devendorf did play 10 games.

Yea, I'll never understand the selection committee, they used the exact opposite then last year to keeping us out, its like whenever were on the bubble its gonna be out. I hope boehiem schedules 14 cupcakes next year to tell the committee to eat it, I schedule harder and my high SoS means nothing.
                              Paul Harris...thats all

Yeah. We don't play a hard enough schedule, wedont get in. We have the #11 SOS, we dont get in. What's with them? Especially in a sucky year for bubble teams, youd think we'd get in.

I was wondering what I should do about Devendorf, but decided to just keep him. Got rid of Wright cause I just hate him and he sucks in this game. I've played player lock with every player on Cuse (starters at least), and Harris is way different than my style, so I didn't pick him.
