Sick of it all...Lions Dynasty Thread

Lifelong Lions fan here...so sick of watching what's happened to my team I have to distract myself with this dynasty. Not sure how often I'll write here but what the heck, let's see how it goes.

I believe in building with the offensive line and with the latest roster update, the Lions aren't all that terrible. Still, something to upgrade in the draft but right now I need pass defense and lots of it (CB and DE, DT).

Lions are through 2 preseason games and are 0-2. We lost a close game 40-38 to the Colts (original time we played this we lost 65-3 but a corrupt file made me revert to a backup) and just lost to the Bengals on the road 27-24 having gone for it with 2 seconds left from the 3 yard line. 3rd string QB Drew Henson completed a pass to his WR who feel a foot short of the goalline to preserve the win for the Bengals. Henson threw 2 TD's and has looked strong through 2 weeks of play. Drew Stanton has also played well as the backup although he was injured after being sacked early in the 3rd quarter. Starter Dan Orlovsky, we traded Kitna to the Cheifs for a 2nd and 4th, has played well.

Other notables, Kevin Smith has looked strong and may be overtaking the #1 RB position from Rudi Johnson. Duece McAllister, whom my owner wished me to trade for, is the 3rd RB and #1 3rd down back.

We have a few players trying some new positions such as S Darnell Bing at LOLB and Alex Lewis adding some depth as a S (might not make the team).

Our most promising new face is a SS name Michael Ford who is listed as a potential Pro-Bowl player. With a name like Ford, he should fit in nicely with the Lions. Ford is currently the #2 SS behind starter Dwight Smith.

LeCharles Bentley, slated to be our #1 C will likely be cut due to his nagging leg injury. He's barely been able to practice and was injured once again against the Bengals.

We are in the process of finalizing a deal for TE Desmond Clark of the Bears, another of the owner's wishes, and still have Roy Williams on the trading block. We've had a few teams offer a 3rd plus more for him but I'm holding out for someone to offer a first in 2010. I'd also be willing to resign Roy although he's unhappy with all of the losing going on.

We signed DT Ted Washington to help fill the void left by Shaun Roger's departure but the oft-injured 360+ behemoth might not make the team for the same reason Bentley wont.

Brian Kelly, our #2 corner is likely out for 2-3 months which really hurts our status at the CB position.

I'm thinking of trading for Okeafor (OLB) from Arizona who's on the block and possibly a speed rushing end, such as Mark Anderson of the Bears (perhaps in the Desmond Clark trade?) and there are a few decent pass rushers on the block.

I wish Mack Miller, our dubious GM, would get fired already!

More updates to come. I might get a chance to make some more cuts after work tomorrow!

Still looking for some decent penalty sliders too!

Good Luck with your Lions....can't believe a Viks fan would say that. Anyway, always good to see how others are doing. In my franchise...your wish has come true as they fired Miller.

    Are you playing or simming?

    Again, good luck.

Good on ya, Mike. I was surprised at my own disappointment when I saw the only NFL game on locally at 1:00 was the Lions. Yikes. Unwatchable.

I've started a(nother) Lions dynasty myself after two false starts. I love the draft but I found I could "game" the initial draft just by having real life knowledge. So, I fired up the Lions as is post-draft. Who gave all those crap safeties all that bonus money!? Oh, yeah. Thanks, Mack Miller. Solid work, there. Looking around at these contracts, Mack is a big fan of bonus babies. Sure makes it hard to maneuver.

Honestly, though. I've argued that "Mack's" picks over the last few years are more the product of bad luck than obvious bad judgement. In keeping with that (and in order to present myself with a challenge), I'm keeping Mack for the forseeable future. That, and I'm keeping the crap playbooks as well. I'll just add to them from stealing plays.

Anyone looking for a challenge, I suggest taking the Lions (or is that already obvious watching TV on Sundays?)

Well the Chiefs must love making bad trades with me because I talked them up from 2 6th round picks for K Jason Hanson (35 or 38 years old) to a 3rd round pick in 2010. I love Hanson, and he's a Lion's HOFer (which is rare) but business is business.

We cut C LeCharles Bentley who is an injury waiting to happen...who's already injured if that makes sense.

I also cut CB Keith Smith (78 ovr) because he's played miserable the first two preseason games and I can't stand watching MY games and feeling like it's the real Lions.

Also cut long-time Lion Alex Lewis who I had working out at SS and we cut George Foster who is a POS.

            More to come shortly...

For the record, on the Hanson trade, it took me about 2-3 weeks of them only offering as high as a 4th for Hanson...patience seems to play a role in this game!??

It certainly does seem to play a role, yes. I started a Bengals franchise and immediately put chad johnson on the trade block. I waited until the end of preseason before I got an offer I liked.

The Titans ended up offering me a first and sixth round draft pick in 2010. Plenty good enough for me to get rid of that whiny baby!

Well, Jason Hanson was cut by the Chiefs...what is with this game?!?!?

I think I will stick with my plan to sign 25 year old free agent Matt Prater out of UCF. (80 OVR). He isn't the best rated K avail but seems to have the best leg...which is all I'm concerned with.

Question: How do you all handle signing FA's who do NOT appear on the clipboard? I always feel dirty signing players before other teams have a chance but some guys, like Prater, likely wont pop up and I need a K for this week's game.

                    Correction on the Kitna trade...it was a 2nd and 7th not a 4th.

About to play preseason game #3 although it may have to wait until tomorrow now that the wife is home. Believe it or not, I'd much rather spend time with her than playing PS3 all night ;-)

What else can you do? Like you say, they don't pop up as clipboard items. I always assumed everyone else already had their shot.

I suppose you could do a little research and see what days team typically sign players and then wait until after that. I would assume that teams aren't doing wholesale changes of personnel, just adding a player to fill in for injury. So, you could do something like give them the Monday after games to get "their" guy and maybe do yours Tuesday.

In regards to the FA's, I was always under the assumption that other teams didn't have a need for them, or there was something fomulaic involved (for example, if current player position = x and prosepctive FA is rated at y% of X, then try to sign him). I think this could go for the CPU teams as well as your own GM, but I'm just speculating, really. I just assumed they didn't need a particular FA - if they did it would go to the clipboard.
