    vs. Radford

    58-55

This was a very close game throughout. The Keydets seem to play to the level of competition most often and cannot pull away from their weaker opponents. This could prove costly when entering into the conference tournament and even the NCAA Tournament or NIT when stiffer competition is faced. Radford led the game 23-22 at the break. However, VMI came back and held off Radford down the stretch led by Chavis Holmes and his 24 points and 3 assists.

    20-1 (7-0)

    -------------------------------------

    at Coastal Carolina

    62-45

There seems to be a trend forming in these games. However, the trend was broken in this one. It was all Keydets all game long. VMI stormed out to a huge lead in the first half. They led at the break 31-17. Chavis Holmes led the Keydets to a 17 point victory and had 32 poitns and 5 assists in the win. Stephen Sargent also chipped in 15 points and 8 rebounds. On the defensive side of the ball Sargent was also a factor with his 4 blocks. He is looking for the Freshman of the year award in the Big South.

    21-1 (8-0)

    Poll News:
VMI remains at the #2 position in the Mid-Major top 25. They also remain in the top 25 poll for the 2nd straight week, this time checking in at #23.
    --------------------------------------

    at Charleston Southern

    73-57

VMI had displayed its dominance and senior leadership in the last two games. In this one the Keydets led by a score of 36-27 at the break. Chavis Holmes once again dominated the first half with 13 points. He then turned it into a whole new level finishing the game 9/18 from 3 and with 32 points and 7 assists overall. Travis Holmes was the side kick in this game. He scored 20 points on 6/9 from 3 and also added 5 rebounds and 2 steals in the 73-57 win.

    22-1 (9-0)

    ----------------------------------------------------

    at UNC-Asheville

    78-62

VMI seems to be getting better and better as the year goes on. Who knows how far they will be able to go and even if they will make the post season tournament. Nothing is guarenteed when you are in a small conference like the Big South. It was all VMI from the start. With the departure of Kenny George from the team in the off season, UNC-Asheville struggled to compete with the Keydets. It was 33-23 at the break and VMI just continued to pour it on in the 2nd half finishing with a 16 point victory. Chavis Holmes continued his streak of 30 point games finishing with 34 points on 8/19 shooting from 3. Stephen Sargent finsihed with 17 points and 9 rebounds. VMI now looks forward to its showdown with 10-1 league foe Winthrop for the regular season crown.

        vs. Winthrop

        86-65

This game was the biggest game of the year for the Keydets. This was the Big South annual champion, Winthrop, trying to come into VMI's house and take away what they have worked so hard for. VMI started on a 16-9 run. Chavis Holmes scored 15 of the first 19 points for VMI. VMI extended the lead to 40-27 at the break. VMI shot 64% in the first half. Chavis Holmes had 26 points in the first half. In the 2nd half it was more of the same. The Keydets only extended their lead and Winthrop never had an answer for Chavis Holmes. Holmes finished 20/29 from the field including 8/14 from 3. He finished with a career high 51 points. Stephen Sargent was the second leading scorer with 8 points and he also contributed 8 rebounds. This was arguably for the Big South crown and it looks like VMI is running away with it. VMI now has won 9 games in a row at home.

          at Radford

          48-84

Well this was the ugliest game of the year for the Keydets. Talk about a let down after an amazing win against Winthrop. Radford shot 70% in the first half to VMI's 23%. The Keydets could never get on track and it was just one of those games where nothing is working. Radford led 38-19 at the break. Then, in the 2nd half, Radford quickly extended the lead and cruised to victory. Radford was led by SR SF Jamar Jenkins with 17 points and 5 rebounds. VMI was terrible from the field. Chavis Holmes could never get on track and finished with 19 points . They finished 4/25 from the 3 point line.

          24-2 (11-1)

          -----------------------------------------------------------

          at Liberty

          75-77

VMI has experienced its first losing streak under Coach G. VMI came out shooting in this one scoring 43 points in the first half. However, Liberty was also up for the challenge and the defensive mistakes that plagued the Keydets in their blowout loss to Radford came back in this one as well. It was tied at 43 at the break. In the 2nd half, VMI couldn't come up with a big stop or a big shot at all, unlike the rest of the season. Late in the game Liberty got a winning basket with 2 seconds left and the Keydets could not come up with a miracle win. Chavis Holmes finised with 29 points and Travis Holmes had 16.

          24-3 (11-2)

Despite the 2 losses in a row the Keydets remained in the Top 25 poll at #25 for the last week of the regular season. They are now tied, but hold the tie breaker with Winthrop at 11-2 in the conference, having beaten the Eagles twice.

          -----------------------------------------------------------

          vs. High Point

          100-85

The Keydets needed to win this game in order to win the conference. They were now tied with Winthrop and forced to have a must win game. You could tell it was on their minds as they busted out to a huge lead in this one. VMI led 52-35. Chavis Holmes had 12 points at the break. The 2nd half showed more of VMI's weakness, but again they held on to win by 15 going over the 100 point mark for the first time in the season. Chavis Holmes finished with 36 points on 7/13 shooting for the Keydets. Quinn Brownfield also had 12 points. High Point was led by SO SG Ibrahim Appiah who had 20 points. With the win, VMI clinches Home Court Advantage in the Big South Tournament and their first Conference Championship in the first season for Coach G.

            2 Winthrop
            7 High Point

            vs. Charleston Southern

            94-80

VMI played very well in their opening round game. Having seen Winthrop, the 2 seed, go down to High Point earlier in the day, the Keydets knew they could seize control of the tournament with a win in the first round. The first half was all offense. VMI broke out to a 28-15 lead with 5 minutes left in the half. The lead however, shrunk after a late run in the half by Charl. Southern. The lead at the break for the Keydets was 53-47. In the 2nd half, SO SG Austin Kenon took over the game. Chavis Holmes was shooting poorly and Kenon came off the bench to score 21 points in the game and hit 4/5 from the 3 point arc. This surge and improved defense allowed the Keydets to cruise to victory over the 8th seed.

              Big South Tournament Semi-Finals

              1 VMI
              5 Coastal Carolina

              3 Liberty
              7 High Point

              vs. Coastal Carolina

              100-88

In the early portion of the game, Coastal Carolina was looking like it was going to take the Tournament Championship away from the Keydets. They jumped out to a 20-6 lead very early in the first half. However, the Keydets were able to fight back and turn on the gas a little bit. They surged to the end of the 1st half and took a 52-47 lead into the break after ending the half on a 14-5 run. In the 2nd half, the defense of the Keydets down the stretch was awesome. VMI was able to cruise to victory and win by 12. For the 2nd time in last 3 games, the Keydets were able to eclipse the 100 point mark. This was all led by Chavis Holmes, who finished with 21 points on 4/10 from the 3 point arc. Travis Holmes also had 21 points and fnished with 3 3 point field goals as well.

                1 VMI
                7 High Point

                vs. High Point

                92-80

The first half was smooth sailing for the Keydets. They were able to start the game on a 10-4 run and enjoyed a lead of 3-9 points the whole first half. They went into the break leading the Panthers 47-38. Coach G was preaching running the basketball up and down the court and trying to get to the century mark once again, however, they were not able to do that in this one. They only outscored the Panthers by 3 in the 2nd half and win by a score of 92-80. Chavis Holmes again was cold for the Keydets. He finished with only 10 points and was 1/7 from the 3 point arc and 3/15 overall. However, many other players were able to step up and score in transition. 5 players finished in double figures, including Stephen Sargent with a game high 17 points and 10 rebounds and Travis Holmes with 14 points and 6 rebounds. Chavis is going to have to fix whatever is wrong if the Keydets are going to be able to go a long way in march.

                            NCAA Tournament 2nd Round

5 VMI vs. 4 NC State

                            at. Arena In Birmingham

The game started out very even. NC State looked extremely talented and was slowing the pace a little. They didn't want to shoot up 3s at all and slowed the pace. It was 15-15 at the 6:45 mark. Then NC State went on a mini-run to go up 34-25 with 3:30 left in the 1st half. VMI couldn't respond as they were shooting terribly from the field. They ended up being down 10 at the half 41-31. In the 2nd half it was all NC State early. They jumped out on a huge run and took a 53-36 lead. However, VMI was up to the challenge of a comeback. They gradually chipped away and took the lead 62-61 with 3:09 left on a Travis Holmes 3 pointer. From then on it was all Wolfpack. They finished the game on an 11-5 run. VMI couldn't manage a clutch 3 pointer down the stretch. It was really the 3 point shooting that hurt the Keydets in the last month. They only shot 6/24 from 3. Chavis Holmes finished his career at VMI with 24 points and 4 assists. Stephen Sargent had 22 points and 10 rebounds. NC State was led by all 5 of their starters going for double figures. SR SG Courtney Fells had 18 points and 6 rebounds to lead the scoring party for the Wolfpack. VMI ended their season 29-4 (12-2) overall.
