    NCAA 2004: Prestige to Challenge

Before we get to the dynasty... I created a team called the Big Sandy Wildcats which is my former high school. I forget who I replaced, but I made them independant and apparently somewhat strong. Then I started with the Longhorns. This dynasty journal is joining my dynasty already in progress, heading into the third season.

    Dynasty: Started off as Texas
    Year: Start of 3rd
    Overall Record: 26-2
Difficulty: Season 1: AA, Season 2 & Since: Adjusted Heisman

    Recap of Career at Texas
In my first season, Texas went 13-1, beating Miami in the National Championship. Lots of players left, and a great WR corp was brought in. About four ***** players were coming in at WR. Season two was a little bit different. I went 13-0, only to lose to Big Sandy in the National Championship. That's when I decided it wouldn't be such a bad idea to leave Texas and try to build up another program somewhere. I declined a coaching offer from Oklahoma, resigned from Texas, and found a job in Houston.

    Career at UH Begins...
First task was to analyze the roster and figure out what changes I felt were necessary. I placed a few freshman in starting positions. Others I will give the opportunity to earn starting spots during the season. I look forward to trying to turn Houston into a powerhouse.

    Key Roster Information

    Quarterbacks
Barrick Nealy - Senior - Starting quarterback...
Aaron Anderson - Freshman - Will see playing time...

    Running Backs
Teddy Stewart - Junior (RS) - Starting running back...
John Thorburn - Freshman - Will see a lot of playing time...

    Fullback
Daniel Rojas - Freshman - Will probably be starter for season.

    Wide Receivers
Tommy Austin - Senior - #1 WR on the team.
Jermelle Smalley - Sophomore - No idea what he's like.
Justin Hansen - Sophomore - Looks like he'll be a good WR.
B.J. Morgan - Junior (RS) - Don't know what to expect.

    Linebacker
Seth Jewell - Freshman - Starting OLB.

    Kicker
    Adam Varnado - Freshman - Starting K.

          Houston (0-0) at Cal (0-0)

          FIRST HALF
Stopped them their first drive. My second play -- Nealy throws an interception. They have it at my 45 yard line. 42 yard pass to the 3. 3 yard touchdown. 7-0, Cal's lead. Houston goes three and out. They return punt to the 48. 3rd and 10 and Cal's WR catches the ball off a defensive tip to score a 48 yard touchdown. 14-0. Houston executed 17 plays on their next drive, going 86 yards on a drive that lasted 4:28. The drive was topped off with Freshman RB John Thorburn running it in from the 3. 14-7. On my next drive, I failed to convert on 4th & 6 from their 40.

Aaron Anderson came in at QB the next drive and threw an INT returned to the 50 by Cal. Late in the 2nd quarter, I was driving, but Teddy Stewart fumbled at the 45 yard line. The rest of the half was all defense.
            [*]Halftime: 14-7[/list]
            SECOND HALF
Freshman QB Aaron Anderson and Freshman RB John Thorburn were given the entire 3rd quarter to try and impress the head coach. On the initial drive, Anderson tosses an interception, but Nolan Howell gets the ball back with a pick himself. 2 plays later, Anderson fumbles the ball. They failed to convert 4th down after being sacked. On their next possession, Cal took it all the way to my 25 before Nolan Howell got himself INT #2. Defense dominated most of the 3rd quarter. With 30 seconds left, Cal tossed a 40 yard pass to the 23. I held them to a field goal attempt. Cal's kicked hooked the kick to the left. 14-7 still. In the 4th quarter, Thorburn was allowed to stay in at RB and Nealy came back in at QB. Was Nealy the answer? He was able to put together an 11-play drive that went 72 yards in 2:40 and ended with another goaline TD from Thorburn. 14-14 with 5:13 left in the 4th quarter. With around 3 minutes, Cal got to the 23 yard line. Just under three minutes to go and they get a 23 yard touchdown. 21-14. With 2 minutes, I converted a 4th & 3 from my own 36. With one minute left they picked me off. Cal proceeded to run out the clock.

            END GAME: 21-14
            Greatness Score: 393 (#1 So far )

My first game as U of H head coach wasn't a total failure. It gave me a good feel for my team as well as what works -- like passes to the tight end. Chance Brown is going to be a huge part of the offense. It's tough losing to Cal 21-14, but I am confident that I'll still be able to do a satisfactory job this year.

                      UPDATE
Lost to Hawaii 37-16. I had plenty of opportunities but turnovers upped their score and held mine down. 0-2 to start the season off. This decision is looking smarter and smarter all the time.

Chance Brown (TE) was injured and will be forced to miss 6 weeks. That is a major blow to my offense. Hopefully Thorpe and Barry, the backup tight ends, can get the job done.

Aaron Anderson has been awarded the starting QB job after out-performing Barrick Nealy against Hawaii.
