Re: NCAA 2004: Prestige to Challenge

    Playbook UPDATE!

Switching to the playbook the coach used back in Texas worked like a charm, and he says that he'll stick with it as long as it works.

    Straight From the Coach
"I was really impressed with the way these bunch of kids played against Florida State. Zach Lane was a monster on defense. Five interceptions and a touchdown? That's talent right there. This team is really starting to come together, and after two big wins, the confidence is growing. Aaron Anderson continues to play fairly well, although his 2/10 TD/INT ratio is a little on the depressing side. John Thorburn is another kid we are really excited about. He's got some speed and each week he seems to be learning and developing. With this team rolling the way it is and with the confidence building, Tulane should be advised to watch out. They're next on our list."

    RECOGNITION!!
The NCAA recognized Zach Lane (4 Tackles, 5 INT, 1 TD) as their Defensive Player of the Week. Congratulations Lane!

            Houston (2-2) at Tulane (3-3)
The Cougars still had a top-rated D heading into this game and that really helped their confidence. With 3 minutes left in the first, Tulane was driving and then Howell saved the Cougars with an interception. Early in the second quarter, Anderson hit backup tight end DeMarcus Thorpe on 3rd and goal from the 11 yard line to give the Cougars a 7-0 lead. Tulane put up an impressive drive only to be intercepted by Webb at the Houston 18. Anderson threw an INT at the 30 which was converted into a TD. 7-7. A hail marry attempt failed and at the half it was still knotted at 7. Poor defense gave Tulane a 14-7 lead. They then returned an INT for a TD. 21-7. With 2 minutes left in the 3rd quarter, Barrick Nealy was given a shot at QB. He was able to drive the Cougars the length of the field. The drive involved a few heartstopping conversions. In the end, John Thorburn muscled his way into the endzone for the 6th time this season. 21-14. A 3-and-out gave me the ball at the 46. Nealy stayed in the game. I converted a 4th & 10 from the 36 with 4:30 left to play. Nealy set the Cougars up in prime position to tie the game. I failed to convert 4th down and Tulane got the ball at the 50. The offensive line let down the Cougars head coach BIG TIME. Houston had another opportunity after forcing a punt. Anderson was brought back in at QB. On 2nd & 18, he launched the ball to WR Tommy Austin who took off for a 78 yard score. A PAT made it 21-21, with 1:28 left. Could the Cougar defense hold on until overtime? The defense started out strong with the batting down of a pass. They then faced 3rd & 10. 1:10 left and the Houston offense will get another chance prior to overtime! With 46 seconds, Tulane picked the ball off at their own 44 yard line. 39 ticks left... 3rd & 10 for Tulane again... HB Screen for an 8 yard loss. A hail marry turned to an interception to end regulation.

In overtime, Houston took offense first. Their scheme changed to a running attack. After a stubborn drive, they punched it in with FB Daniel Rojas from the 1 to take a 28-21 lead. On 3rd down, Tulane's WR made an unbelievable catch to tie the game at 28 and send it to double overtime. When Tulane got the ball in the 2nd overtime, QB #6 had been knocked out for a series. This was a factor as Tulane was intercepted on 2nd down. Now Houston had their chance. The Cougars this time had two big pass plays to TE Barry to get near the goaline, and then Aaron Anderson snuck it in on 3rd & Goal from the 2 yard line. Houston wins 34-28 in double overtime!!

            FINAL: 34-28, Double OT
            Greatest Games Score: 853 ( )

            PLAYER of the GAME
TE Derrick Barry. He had 23 receptions for 203 yards and a win would not have been possible without him.

            SURPRISE of the GAME
The Houston Cougars overcame a 21-7 deficit and struggled to hold it at 21 before overtime. Finally, they prevailed on defense and offense as they won the game 34-28.

            Mentionable Performances
            QB Aaron Anderson - 108.0, 22/39, 256 yards, 2 TD, 2 INT
            QB Barrick Nealy - 101.3, 10/18, 98 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT
            RB John Thorburn - 26 att, 65 yards, 1 TD - 2 rec, 18 yards
WR Tommy Austin - 1 rec, 78 yards, 1 TD

The fact that they didn't give up late in the game shows the confidence this team has. Now at 3-2, Houston is gaining momentum and is ready to break out and become a powerhouse.

Memphis (1-5) at Houston (3-2) Recap
At home, Houston was more than just a little confident going into this game. Running back John Thorburn was heard remarking "This is the first game we figure is a definite win." Perhaps they were over confident, as Memphis returned the opening kick off for a touchdown to go ahead 7-0. On offense, however, the Cougars welcomed the return of TE Chance Brown. On my first drive, Varnado's field goal bounced off the crossbar. A lucky catch by Memphis' WR gave them a quick 14-0 lead. Houston looked hopeless out there. Definitely their ego had gotten to them. Houston made it 14-3 on their next drive. Poor defense upped the Memphis lead to 21-3. Could the Cougars pull off another miracle comeback? With 1:53 in the half, Varnado made it 21-6. With 25 seconds left, CB #10 of Houston intercepted the ball and ran it back to the 20 yard line of Memphis. With 17 seconds left, Anderson threw over the middle and hit Chance Brown for a 20 yard touchdown. Memphis made a hail marry connection but the WR was tackled out at the 10 -- 21-13 at the half. To the crowd's disappointment, Houston punted from the 48 on 4th & 2 to open the 3rd quarter. Memphis appeared invincible as they made the Houston defense endure a long drive. But Webster made them pay by intercepting the ball in the endzone to stop a dangerous threat by Memphis. This time the crowd won the coach over on 4th & Inches from the Memphis 31 and he let John Thorburn pound it forward for the first down. After a long drive, Anderson tossed it to a sliding Thorburn from the 1 yard line. They would now try for 2 as it was 21-19. They figured that Chance Brown had been solid all game (16 receptions through the 3rd quarter) so they might as well try a pass to the tight end. The result? It's good! 21-21. Nick Walsh, Houston DL, broke his thumb at the end of the 3rd quarter but he would return. A 12 yard pass from Anderson to Chance Brown gave Houston a 28-21 lead with 5:30 left to play. On 3rd down, Webb got an interception and returned it to the Memphis 30. Late in the 4th, Thorburn failed to convert on 4th & goal from the 3. Memphis WR Roth made a miraculous catch on 1st down... 99 yard TD -- obviously a new NCAA record. 28-28; Memphis had tied it back up. It wasn't over yet. With 30 seconds left, WR Justin Hansen made a great 30+ yard catch to put the ball at the 28, and Thorburn ran it up the middle for 7 to put the ball in good position. 4 seconds left... 38 yard field goal attempt... Varnado kicks it... GOOD! 31-28, with 1 second left on the clock. The return pitted them at my 35 yard line but on the hail marry, the free safety came away with an endzone pick to end the game. Houston has made another comeback!
                        31-28 victory!

                        FINAL: 31-28
                        Greatest Games Score: 1250 ( )

Houston Cougars: 4-2; 4 game winning streak

                        PLAYER of the GAME
There were a ton of great performances in the game, such as Chance Brown's huge return to college football. However, one play was the difference in this game, and that was the field goal with 4 seconds. The Player of the Game is thus no other than the Kicker, Adam Varnado for having ice in his veins on a clutch field goal. Kudos, Adam!

                        SURPRISE of the GAME
Overconfidence played a factor in Houston falling into a 21-3 hole. However, they once again found it within themselves to pullout a victory for the second consecutive week.

                        Mentionable Performances
                        QB Aaron Anderson - 137.4, 36/55, 353 yards, 3 TD, 0 INT
                        RB John Thorburn - 32 att, 105 yards, 0 TD - 2 rec, 11 yards, 1 TD
TE Chance Brown - 24 rec, 209 yards, 2 TDs
K Adam Varnado - Made 3 field goals

                        Straight From the Coach
"What a game. Quite a scare from the 1-5 Memphis team. It's those underestimated teams you have to watch out for. The team showed a lot of heart in the comeback today and that is great to build on, but we also found a vulnerability today -- arrogance. We came into this game thinking it was sealed from the start, but Memphis came out and let us know right off that they had other plans. Plans we weren't ready for at all from the looks of things. Anderson and Thorburn are really starting to shine. I was so glad that John was able to crack 100 rushing yards. And Chance Brown comes back where he left off -- being a total monster on the field. Nice comeback, but we have to watch out for becoming too confident."

                        HOUSTON: 4-2
                        Next Game: vs TCU (6-2)

                              TCU (6-2) at Houston (4-2)
This would prove to be a sure challenge for the Houston Cougars. Going into the game, the coach's main concern was about how well the secondary would perform. On TCU's opening drive, the option worked for an 89 yard score. 7-0 TCU early. The coach's fears appear more than justified. Houston drove down to the 37 of TCU quite efficiently. The drive stalled at the 20 and Varnado's 37 yard field goal madde it 7-3. The Houston D came up big on a 3rd and short by TCU, forcing a 4th down punt. TCU burned Houston deep to go ahead 14-3. Still a minute left in the first quarter... the defense was already starting to break. A nice productive drive put Houston back in it at 14-9 after John Thorburn broke a nice 18 yard TD run. A taunting penalty by Thorburn cost Houston quite a few yards, but Varnado nailed the PAT to make it 14-10. TCU turned it over on downs after a failed 4th down attempt. Good defense kept the score 14-10 and then gave Houston the ball with 1:40 left in the half. Anderson threw an interception, giving them the ball at the Cougars' 39 yard line. The defense held them to a field goal try which was missed. 14-10 was your halftime score. Thorburn rushed for 59 yards in the first half. I opened the third quarter well but threw an interception into the endzone. Anderson was having a very bad day. Webster responded by picking off a deep pass at the 50. Next drive = another INT at the 5 yard line. Nealy started to warm up. Houston did not appear to have any run defense left as they basically watched the TCU tailbacks fly by. They were finally stopped at the 50. Anderson had one more shot. He failed to produce. Should the Cougars get another chance, Nealy would come in. TCU threw a 60+ yard pass to get inside the 5. A touchdown made it 21-10. TE Derrick Barry dropped a 4th down pass. Houston was doomed. On the sidelines, the head coach ripped into his offense for a good ten minutes before refocusing on the game.

                              SURPRISE of the GAME
