Re: NCAA 2004: Prestige to Challenge

    Houston (0-0) at Maine (0-0)
The Cougars should be able to beat Maine. Should be able to. The stadium was virtually silent as there was a low turnout. Houston took an early 3-0 lead. UH stopped Maine on 3rd & short. A long drive and a John Thorburn run gave the Cougars a 10-0 lead late in the 1st. Maine made a surge but came up short once again and had to punt. They returned an INT for a TD to make it 10-7. Anderson was up to his old tricks. Another INT for a TD made it 14-10. Holy ****!!! On their next drive, Thorburn took it up the gut to put the Cougars back on top 17-14. However, on the drive, Aaron Anderson injured his ankle. It was not long before they determined the seriousness of the injury. It was a high ankle sprain and would cost Anderson 4 weeks. This meant walk-on freshman QB Austin Smith would have to get the job done. He was the only other quarterback. Good thing they had a 17-14 lead. On his only pass play before the half, Smith was taken town for a sack.

    HALFTIME: 17-14, Houston leads

The injury to Anderson appeared as though it was going to have devastating effects. Smith was nowhere near as good as Anderson. On Maine's next drive, Freshman LB Jason Mullins intercepted the ball at the 40. Maine's offense was doing pretty poorly as well, and they were unable to move the ball at all. Hey, what do you know? Austin Smith led the Cougars to a field goal on the next drive to put them ahead 20-14. A new strategy was tried: a mixture of Austin Smith and John Thorburn at QB. Thorburn wasn't too bad, although mostly all he did was sneak the ball. But the mix proved to be a solid combination. That is, until WR B.J. Morgan fumbled near the goaline to foil a confidence-building drive. No matter as the defense continued to gel, and finally Jason Mullins intercepted his second ball and brought it back to Maine's 17 yard line, just about where Houston left off the last time. This time the ending was happier as Smith hit TE Chance Brown from 6 yards out to give Houston a comfortable 27-14 lead with 3 minutes left in the game. On 4th down, Maine's TE made an acrobatic catch and streaked 70 yards for the score. 27-21. Two minutes left in the game. Thorburn at QB efficiently ran out the clock.

    FINAL: Houston wins 27-21!

    PLAYER of the GAME
RB John Thorburn - no doubt about it! As a rusher, he had 40 attempts for 142 yards and 2 touchdowns. Then, when Anderson went down and Austin Smith wasn't doing much, he aided at the QB position, going 2/2 for 39 yards. An outstanding ballgame for this young man.

    SURPRISE of the GAME
Has to be the heartbreaking injury to Aaron Anderson. Though it'll only cost him 4 weeks, he was really looking forward to proving something this season. Hopefully he'll be able to once he gets back in the starting lineup.

    Mentionable Performances
    QB Austin Smith - 102.8, 9/19, 86 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT
    QB Aaron Anderson - 75.4, 11/23, 123 yards, 0 TD, 2 INT - 7 rushes for 30 yards
TE Chance Brown - 15 rec, 180 yards, 1 TD

    Straight From the Coach
"This injury to Anderson is a real nightmare. Austin Smith showed flashes of stability but overall was too inconsistent on the field. Times like these I wish we didn't have two straight weekends of games coming up. We'll have to make do, I suppose. The combo of Smith and Thorburn seemed to be a viable option. Thorburn's speed with Smith finishing off the drives through the air is a possible scheme that we might have to try out. We'll see what happens. At least we started out with a win."

Houston Cougars: 1-0 - They won, but it cost them QB Anderson
Next Game: at San Diego State (0-0)

      Report Following UH Practice
It seems that after a couple of practices this week, the solution the coach has come up with at quarterback is indeed that John Thorburn will try his hand at it, mixed with backup QB Austin Smith. Obviously Houston will try their best to bring a run-oriented attack, but we'll see how successful they are.

Houston (1-0) at San Diego State (0-0)
The Cougars had no idea what to expect in this game as they went in without their normal quarterback, Aaron Anderson. It just didn't seem right to have tailback John Thorburn warming up his throwing arm prior to the game. SDSU got the ball first. Lane got his 1st INT of the year at the 50 yard line. Houston's opening drive was incredible. They drove the fifty yards and got a touchdown. Thorburn was the QB the entire time, completing 3 of 3 for 34 yards, including a touchdown pass of 20 yards to TE Chance Brown. He also ran for 16 yards. The coach looked like a genius. Another brilliant drive saw Thorburn hit Dillard for the touchdown to give Houston a 14-0 lead. The Houston defense was pumped up as a fumble recovery by LB Seth Jewell set the Cougars up at the 3. Thorburn threw ANOTHER touchdown to Chance Brown. 21-0, still a little time left in the first. Late in the second, SDSU made a big mistake -- a bad pass led to Lane's 2nd interception of the season, which he returned to the 10 yard line. John Thorburn ran the ball from the 4 yard line for his 4th overall touchdown already in the 1st half. 28-0, Houston looked unstoppable. And Austin Smith hadn't even made a QB appearance yet. Teddy Stewart punched it in, but Varnado missed the PAT. Houston had a 34-0 lead going into the fourth. The previous drive also saw John Thorburn dislocate his shoulder, which knocked him out of the game. Houston's defense would not budge. Late in the 4th, SDSU forced a punt but a muffed return gave Houston the ball back. With 1 minute, an interception gave SDSU the ball at the Cougars' 40. They dropped back for a hail marry, but Seth Jewell and Jason Mullins converged on the QB for a sack. Jewell was awarded the full credit, however, as Mullins was a split second later arriving at the QB. The game was over!

            FINAL: Houston wins 34-0

            PLAYER of the GAME
Second consecutive week -- John Thorburn. He had a 130.7 quarterback rating as he threw to complete 14 of 26 for 120 yards, 3 touchdowns, and zero interceptions. He also ran it 16 times for 34 yards and another touchdown. A great performance, all in 3 quarters as a dislocated shoulder would force him to sit out the entire 4th quarter.

            SURPRISE of the GAME
The stellar performance by the Houston defense. Pitching a shutout in a game when the head coach felt he would need them the most. He just didn't know the offense was going to post 34 points.

            Mentionable Performances
            QB Austin Smith - 108.8, 6/8, 56 yards, 0 TD, 1 INT
RB Teddy Stewart - 11 att, 36 yards, 1 TD
TE Chance Brown - 9 rec, 75 yards, 2 TD
LB Jason Mullins - 9 Tackles, Forced Fumble
CB Zach Lane - 2 INT
LB Seth Jewell - 3 Tackles, 1 Sack, 1 Forced Fumble, 1 Fumble Recovery

Houston Cougars: 2-0 - Lookin' strong so far...
            Next Game: vs Ohio (0-1)

            RUMOR UPDATE
Sources say that the coach is expecting a strong start will earn him a contract extension at the end of the year.

                        Houston (3-0) at #13 Penn State (3-0)
The Houston defense knew this would be a real test. So far the new starting freshman had been doing a good job. They rank #1 in yards allowed, giving up an average of 190.3 yards per game. This was their first real challenge of the year, however. Penn State got the ball first. They failed to convert a long 3rd & 12 and had to punt it away to Houston. On the punt return, WR Jermelle Smalley sprained his elbow and will miss 4 weeks. The Houston D was confused and allowed the PSU QB Wilcox to scramble for 30 yards. They came up big at midfield. Houston drove, but Anderson threw an INT at the 40 yard line. PSU easily made it 7-0. PSU recovered a fumble and then 2 plays later fumbled it back. Good defense gave Penn State the ball at the start of the 2nd quarter. But another bad pass gave Zach Lane his third interception of the year and he returned it to the 18 yard line of Penn State. Varnado missed an easy kick. The Houston coach nearly had an aneurism. PSU went up 14-0 after a long bomb. Houston was defenseless. Plus, Anderson looked like he had never played a game outside of Jr. High. The Houston defense was pathetic trying to defend anything. They did manage to give the Cougars offense the ball with 2 minutes left in the first half, though. On a first down scamper, Anderson injured his back which forced Thorburn to QB again. Anderson was out of the game with back spasms. PSU made it 21-0 at the half. Thorburn was picked off and the Nittany Lions failed to make anything of it. Houston D kept PSU from scoring on the next drive, too. The Houston OL seemed to choose today to take a day off from blocking. A huge punt return helped setup PSU's score to go up 24-0.

(INSERT ANY TEAM GETTING KILLED HERE)

                        FINAL: PSU wins 37-7

Straight From the Quarterback (Aaron Anderson)
"I don't know quite what the problem is. I can't stop throwing interceptions and I can't stop getting injured. That's life. I just have to accept it and move on. Hopefully we can put this loss behind us and really get moving on offense. It hurts to get pounded in my first game back from injury."

                        Straight From the Coach
"The score makes it seem like PSU dominated -- and they did. But the Houston D had their moments. Besides, we were playing the #13 ranked team in the nation -- what'd you expect to happen? This just makes me worry about the game against Louisville later this year. Hopefully Anderson can stay in the game injury-free next time."

Houston Cougars: 3-1 - Lost to Penn State but still confident in D
                        Next Game: vs ECU (0-3)

                              UPDATE
Houston was able to handle ECU 30-10 in a game that saw Aaron Anderson looking like a true quarterback. One of the most impressive performances came from the young defense though -- LB Jason Mullins had 4 tackles, 2 sacks, and 1 forced fumble. FS Jeremy Duncan had 4 tackles and 2 interceptions.
