For the first 3 innings, both teams could not get their offense rolling, but Terrence Long got on base and Giles drove him in, which would break the short offensive slump. By the 6th inning, the Padres had found their grove, going up 4-0. The Mets, in the meanwhile, couldn't string together any runs due to Valdes' spectaular outing.

In the end, the Padres played better overall baseball, and win the game 4-0
