    GAME 9
SYRACUSE, NY - The Golden Bears opened up the first College Football Playoff rankings #1, the first time they have ever achieved that honor, but today they traveled to Syracuse to face a team desperate to get the season over with. Syracuse head coach Fran Brown is really starting to circle the drain, after putting up two middling seasons this year has been a disaster for the program. Sitting at 2-6, a visit from the nation’s best offense would not be a recipe for success.

So I used the HTML, and the preview showed the text matching the width of the image, but when I post it the text ignores the set margins.

      ESPN 300 Commits : None
      Top Offensive Prospect : None
      Top Defensive Prospect : None

      Previous Ranking : N/A

After pulling off a Top 25 class in 2024 that brought in 35 players, there aren’t any areas of desperate need in Berkeley. For once Justin Wilcox can just focus on bringing in a higher caliber of player, and the fact that he is getting so much traction with four star players points to potential success in this area. On top of that, an unfamiliar sight tops their list of targets; a five-star prospect. The last time Cal signed a five-star prospect in the ESPN 300 was never, going all the way back to 2007.

This will be an interesting class for Wilcox as the one position they would really like to improve on is WR. Mike Bloesch looks to be targeting faster wideouts after the success of Tobias Merriweather and Mikey Matthews, the transfer of Noah Short is further evidence of this. Players like Darryl Hawkinson and Andre Onwenu come up frequently when scouts are asked about Cal’s recruiting approach, they might not be five-star prospects but they could be very valuable to a Cal team looking for speed.

          ROYALS NEWS
Royals' top prospect to make MLB debut tomorrow night

Caglianone called up for MLB debut: It's finally happened, although a bit earlier than expected -- the Royals have called up top prospect Jac Caglianone after a quick, breezy tour through Double-A and Triple-A this season. In 228 plate appearances between the two levels in 2025, Cags slashed a remarkable .319/.417/.534 with eight doubles and eleven homeruns. He also walked twenty-six times, striking out on only fifty-eight occasions.

In a now-viral video, Caglianone was given the news by his manager in Triple-A, Mike Jirschele during Omaha's off day yesterday.

The Royals had several open spots on the 40-man roster at the time, so no corresponding move had to be made in that respect. However, MJ Melendez is going on the injured list with a right elbow sprain that will keep him out of action for a couple of weeks. Manager Matt Quatraro noted that he suffered the injury during yesterday's loss to the Athletics, but remained in the game.

"I mean, yes, you look at the 450-foot homeruns and those are great, don't get me wrong," Quatraro went on to say. "But he's clearly pretty advanced, even for a guy who was playing college baseball less than 18 months ago. Sure, there will likely be some struggles early on, but he's a diligent worker and we're looking forward to having him here."

He'll be joining an offense that has some standout players, including Bobby Witt Jr, Salvador Perez, and Vinnie Pasquantino. However, the offense has been rather impotent in the last handful of weeks, as they've averaged just 3.3 runs per game over their last twenty-four games dating back to May 19th. Prior to that, Kansas City had a top-five offense in most major offensive categories. It's still a top-ten offense, but no longer the juggernaut it was in the early going.

Witt has largely carried the offense in that timeframe, as he's surged into the lead into the American League batting race, looking to defend his batting title from a season ago. Witt also is tied for the league lead in bWAR (4.2), hits (91), and total bases (160); while tying for second in steals (15), second in triples (5), and tied with Pasquantino for third in doubles (20). He is also top-five in SLG% (.559) and OPS (.924).

“Where I would caution him is like he’s not a savior to this offense, nor should he think he think he is, nor should anybody think he is because that’s super unfair,” Pasquantino said. “He needs to come into this lineup and be his best self because his best self is what helps us the most, not him trying to do too much or to try to save the offense.”

Royals make flurry of other moves: The Royals didn't just make waves nationally with the Caglianone news; they also made a slew of other roster moves. In addition to that, the Royals also designated pitchers Chris Stratton for assignment and optioned Taylor Clarke to Triple-A, re-calling Steven Cruz from Omaha along with adding fellow Storm Chasers teammate Andrew Hoffmann to the 40-man roster and to call him up to the Royals to take their spots on the active roster.

Signed to a two-year contract prior to last season, the veteran righty Stratton exercised his $4.5 million player option after a shaky 2024 campaign. It hasn't gotten any better in 2025, leaving the Royals with a 6.35 ERA and twenty walks in 28 1/3 innings this season. Clarke, who has not yet hit the six-year service mark but has more than five, accepted the optional assignment and will remain in the organization.

Hoffmann will re-join his former Braves farmhand in Drew Waters, as the two came over in a July 2022 trade (along with former Royal minor leaguer C.J. Alexander) in exchange for the 35th overall draft pick in that year's draft. Atlanta turned that pick into pitcher JR Ritchie, who has failed to find much of a footing in pro ball so far.

The Royals also optioned speedy outfielder Dairon Blanco to Triple-A in favor of John Rave, who gives the Royals another left-handed bat on an active roster that badly needs more impact bats from that side. Rave profiles as a leadoff hitter with above-average speed and defense, as the struggling Blanco with his sub-.600 OPS will head to Omaha.

Right-handed pitcher Eric Cerantola, drafted by the Royals in the fifth round back in 2021, also had his contract purchased by the organization but will remain in Omaha. Veteran catcher Luke Maile, who did not appear in any action with the Royals, was waived by the club to make room for Cerantola.

Ragans to embark on rehab stint this week: Royals GM JJ Picollo revealed that southpaw Cole Ragans would begin his rehab assignment as he continues to recover from elbow tendinitis that has shelved him for nearly six weeks. According to most reports, he'll work out of the bullpen mostly. Before his injury, he had been going through an up-and-down season, but his return will make an already-strong rotation that much better.

In fact, Picollo went on local radio and noted that finding starting pitching at the deadline wasn't even really on the radar.

"We feel really, really good about our pitching depth, especially in the upper levels of the minors," Picollo went on to say. "I feel quite confident in saying that starting pitching is well down on the list of positions that we'll be looking to upgrade as we approach the deadline. Now of course, things change and we could deal with another injury or two; or we could fall out of the race, but as of now it's not something we're looking into."

Some of that depth might be right-hander Kyle Wright, who just came off a disappointing rehab start earlier this week with Omaha by allowing four earned runs in 3 1/3 innings, although he didn't walk a batter and struck out three. Additionally, Seth Lugo (shoulder) won't return until possibly September, but he could also give them a boost late in the season, especially in the bullpen as he won't likely have the stamina built back up to start games.
