    Bearcats Keep Rolling
"James White dropped 19 points on the Redhawks, winning player of the game honors for the fourth time in ten games."
    Tuesday December 28th, 2004
    The Cincinnati Enquirer

The Bearcats won their tenth straight game, and have opened the season with a 10-0 record after blowing out the Miami (OH) Redhawks 83-58 last night. James White scored a team high 19 points, and had 5 rebounds in the win. James White said the game was great, "There's nothing like beating a home state rival." Coach Huggins and the gang will now pack their bags and head for San Francisco. They will be competiting in the San Francisco Classic, a tournament played at the Leavey Center, home of the Santa Clara Broncos starting tomorrow night.

James White is all smiles as the Bearcats get win number ten, 83-58.

Santa Clara Bulldogs - (7-5, Unranked, 4th in West Coast Conference)
Central Conn. St. Blue Devils - (2-5, Unranked, 10th in Northeast)

    Schedule:
    Tuesday December 28th:
Yale vs Cincinnati (6 PM PST)
Central Conn. St vs Santa Clara (9 PM PST)
    Wendesday December 29th:
TBD vs TBD (6 PM PST)

Santa Clara Bulldogs - Travis Niesen, Forward/Jr. (15.9 PPG)
Central Conn. St. Blue Devils - DeMario Anderson, Guard/Soph. (13.0 PPG)

Although Cincinnati is favored to win the tournament, dont count Santa Clara out. They are known to be a very dangerous team from beyond the arch and can rebound very well. Plus, they will be playing with homecourt advantage throughout the tourney. The Bearcats start off by playing the Yale Bulldogs, a team that only averages about 67 points a game, while the Bearcats average over 80 a game.

                  Cincinnati at Illinois Preview
                  The Cincinnati Enquirer

On Friday, New Years Eve, the Bearcats will face their first major test of the season when they play the Illinois Fighting Illini. The game will be played in Las Vegas, Nevada on national television. Illinois was the team that defeated Cincinnati 92-68 in March last year in the NCAA Tournament. The Bearcats come into the game 8 point underdogs and will have to play their best ball to compete with a team of Illinois strength. Heres a quick breakdown of tomorrow's game.

                  Points Per Game
                  Cincinnati - 85.4
                  Illinois - 80.8

                  Rebounds Per Game
                  Cincinnati - 29.1
                  Illinois - 30.8

                  Assists Per Game
                  Cincinnati - 17.4
                  Illinois - 17.3

                  Steals Per Game
                  Cincinnati - 14.6
                  Illinois - 8.5

                  Blocks Per Game
                  Cincinnati - 4.5
                  Illinois - 6.1

                  Turnovers Per Game
                  Cincinnati - 4.7
                  Illinois - 11.6

                  Leading Scorers
Cincinnati - James White, 14.8 PPG
Illinois - Deron Williams, 19.2 PPG

It seems Cincinnati has the advantage, having better stats in more catergories than Illinois, but the Fighting Illini have played harder teams so far in the year, while the Cats schedule has been quite easy. Illinois is a team known for their defense, and it is very hard to score against them, every shot Cincinnati makes will be well earned. Illinois is ranked 4th in the nation with a record of 10-1, while Cincinnati is ranked 8th and has a record of 12-0.

The schedule now will get a little tougher for Cincinnati, they next will face the #4 ranked Fighting Illini of Illinois, the team that knocked the Bearcats out of last years NCAA Tournament.

                    Cincinnati at Illinois Preview
                    The Cincinnati Enquirer

On Friday, New Years Eve, the Bearcats will face their first major test of the season when they play the Illinois Fighting Illini. The game will be played in Las Vegas, Nevada on national television. Illinois was the team that defeated Cincinnati 92-68 in March last year in the NCAA Tournament. The Bearcats come into the game 8 point underdogs and will have to play their best ball to compete with a team of Illinois strength. Heres a quick breakdown of tomorrow's game.

                    Points Per Game
                    Cincinnati - 85.4
                    Illinois - 80.8

                    Rebounds Per Game
                    Cincinnati - 29.1
                    Illinois - 30.8

                    Assists Per Game
                    Cincinnati - 17.4
                    Illinois - 17.3

                    Steals Per Game
                    Cincinnati - 14.6
                    Illinois - 8.5

                    Blocks Per Game
                    Cincinnati - 4.5
                    Illinois - 6.1

                    Turnovers Per Game
                    Cincinnati - 4.7
                    Illinois - 11.6

                    Leading Scorers
Cincinnati - James White, 14.8 PPG
Illinois - Deron Williams, 19.2 PPG

It seems Cincinnati has the advantage, having better stats in more catergories than Illinois, but the Fighting Illini have played harder teams so far in the year, while the Cats schedule has been quite easy. Illinois is a team known for their defense, and it is very hard to score against them, every shot Cincinnati makes will be well earned. Illinois is ranked 4th in the nation with a record of 10-1, while Cincinnati is ranked 8th and has a record of 12-0.

                          Interview With Coach Huggins
                          Wendesday January 5th, 2005
                          The Cincinnati Enquirer

Cincinnati Enquirer sports writer Paul Daugherty sat down Wendesday afternoon with Bearcat coach Bob Huggins on the UC campus to talk about his team halfway through the season.

                          Paul Daugherty
                          Enquirer Sports Writer

                          Here's how the conversation went...

Daugherty - So, here we are halfway through the season and your team has a 12-1 record and is #13 in the Nation. How do you feel going into C-USA play?

Huggins - So far so good, the Illinois game hurted, but what more can you ask for, we won 12 of our first 13. As for the C-USA, I think as long as we stay healthy and focused, we will be just fine.

Daugherty - Yeah, 12 out of 13 is pretty good. Some critics claim the Bearcats are overrated, they say Cincy has had a fairly weak schedule and should be lower in the rankings, do you feel the same?

Huggins - I am very proud of this team and disagree. The critics are just saying how they feel, and their job is to criticize. That's how they earn their checks.

Daugherty - Enough said coach. Now, I want to talk a little about Friday's loss to the Illini. Your thoughts?

Huggins - They simply outplayed us, they are a very strong team on both sides of the ball. I wouldnt be surprised if they make the final four or even win it all in March.

Daugherty - Injuries haven't hurt the team yet through the season, but Kirkland missed the Illinois game, will he be back for DePaul tomorrow?

Huggins - He will be back, he just had a sore ankle like Muhammad did a few games back. Although, Eric Hicks may miss the game, he has been fighting the flu all week.

Daugherty - Hopefully Hicks recovers well. That brings me to my next question, are you happy with the results Souleymane has given you at center? Many people were surprised you started him over Hicks.

Huggins - He has been great so far, especially for a freshman, he will just get better as time wares on. Hicks is better coming off the bench for us, he can play both the power forward and center position well, which is nice when Maxiell or Asrangue needs a rest or is in foul trouble.

Daugherty - I see, with conference play starting tomorrow what teams scare you most?

Huggins - Well of course Louisville, but I also see Memphis, DePaul, Charlotte and St. Louis as strong teams. The C-USA is a very tough conference, even UAB and Marquette are tough games.

Daugherty - Well coach, I thank you for your time, and wish you and the Cats the best of luck in the second half.

                          Huggins - Thanks Paul.

Cincinnati Enquirer sports writer Paul Daugherty sat down Wendesday afternoon with Bearcat coach Bob Huggins on the UC campus to talk about his team halfway through the season.

Trailing for most of the game, the Bearcats finally took the lead from the DePaul Blue Demons with less than three minutes to go in the game. Jason Maxiell got fouled while making a lay-up and completed the three point play giving Cincy a 72-70 lead. The Bearcats then had a huge defensive stop and got a clutch jumpshot by Jihad Muhammad giving Cincinnati their first conference win.

Jason Maxiell dunks the ball, he finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

The two teams were pretty much equal in every catergory, but the Bearcats were able to force a few more turnovers which gave them the advantage on the scoreboard. Cincinnati will take on DePaul again on February 12th on the road. The Bearcats (13-1, 1-0) will now go on the road to take on the St. Louis Billikens, a team that like DePaul is one of the C-USA's best on both sides of the court. The Bilikens are 13-3 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
