    The Daily Oklahoman

I'm going to try a completly new kind of dynasty report. While I'm controlling a horrible team in a horrible conference, so that it has as little affect as possible on the rest of the nation, I will be writing newspaper stories on the 4 D1 teams in Oklahoma. Why Oklahoma? Because I live in Oklahoma. Oklahoma State is my favorite team, but I will have as little bias to them as possible.

    The 4 teams in Oklahoma

    Oklahoma State Cowboys-BIG XII
    Oklahoma Sooners-BIG XII
    Tulsa Golden Hurricane-WAC
    Oral Roberts Golden Eagles-MID-CON

I'll be taking over Savannah St, but I won't pay much attention to them.

    Team by team analysis, soon.

Oklahoma State Cowboys 03-04 record 31-4eveteran coach Eddie Sutton.

    Additions
    JamesOn Curry 6'3
    Aaron Pettway 6'11

    Losses
Tony Allen 6'4- Leading scorer, best defensive player, clutch, and brought a winner's mentality to the Cowboys
Janovar Weatherspoon 6'1- 6th man, good defender, spark off the bench
Jason Miller 6'8 - Played every game, but played miniscule minutes.

    Guards- *denotes starter

    John Lucas* 5'11 165 SR

A fireplug, small, and a lightsout shooter. The returning Big XII player of the year comes back with a vengenance. After giving up the winning layup to Will Bynum in waning seconds of the game, Lucas has something to prove. A fantastic 3 point shooter, Lucas should be able to score 15-20 pts. a game.

    Stephen Graham* 6'6 215 SR

Twin brother of OSU starter Joey Graham. Got seldom minutes last year due to being stuck behind Tony Allen. Tough and physical at 6'6, he should be a tough matchup with whoever he guards, and is guarded by. A solid shooter, is taller than most 2's in the nation.

    Daniel Bobik* 6'5 210 SR

Transfer from BYU, Bobik is an excellent defender and 3pt shooter. He picks his spots from beyond the 3pt arc, and hits them at over a 40% clip. A solid ballhandler. Always makes the extra pass.

    JamesOn Curry 6'3 190 FR

All-time leading scorer in North Carolina high school basketball history. Ran into some legal trouble, and had his scholarship offer recsinded by UNC. Got a 2nd chance in Stillwater. Looks to have left his troubled past behind him. JamesOn is a fantastic shooter and ballhandler for a freshman, and by the time he's a senior he could be contending for national honors.

    Forwards

    Joey Graham* 6'7 225 SR

Twin brother of OSU starting guard Stephen Graham. An amazing physical speciman. Unstopable from midrange, and is an excellent 3 point shooter. Above average rebounder, and a solid ballhandler for a big man. Has trouble with fouls sometimes though.

    Ivan McFarlin* 6'8 240 SR

A true warrior, a 4 year starter at Oklahoma State. Is always scraping in the paint, and fighting for rebounds. Gets 6-12 points a game from putbacks alone. Has been working on his range, and looks to hit 8-12 foot jumpers more often.

    Terrence Crawford- 6'6 230 SR

An undersized post, but has an oversized heart. Not much of a scoring threat, but can hit the uncontested 3 on occasion. Will certainly be in the post rotation for Eddie Sutton this season.

    David Monds- 6'8 243 SO

Played some valuable minutes last year as a true freshman. Looks to improve his skills and play even more minutes this season.

    Marcus Dove 6'7 210

A redshirt last season, Dove is already a solid on ball defender, but needs to fill out more before competing at a serious level in the Big XII, but with 7 seniors leaving this season. Dove could be a starter next year. So every minute he gets to play this year will help.

    Centers

    Aaron Pettway 6'11 238 JR

A JUCO transfer, Pettway looks to be what the Cowboys lacked last season, a presence in the post. A tremendous shot blocker. Has only played organized basketball for 4 years.

    Frans Steyn 7'2 289 SR

A former rugby player, that first picked up a basketball 3 years ago. If he can ever use his tremendous size to his advantage, lookout. But right now he looks to receive minimal minutes.

    NOTE:

I raised the attributes of 3 players. Joey Graham-Who I just made better, JamesOn Curry-who I made a better shooter, and higher off and def awareness, and Daniel Bobik, who I slightly raised his onball defense.

I lowered the attributes of 3 players. Aaron Pettway, who I raised shotblocking, but severely lowered off and def awareness, Frans Steyn, who in RL is a horrible player, I lowered them accordingly, he's a 51 ovr, now, I also lowered David Monds, just slightly.

    OU's preview next.

Well, since I can't figure out how to edit, here's the summary for Okst.

This team should be just as good as last year's, if everyone can improve slightly it should make up for the loss of Tony Allen. This is a great defensive team, that has 5 guys that could go for 20 every night.

Best Case Scenario: Everyone improves dramatically, and JamesOn Curry provides 6-10 points off the bench, and the new force of Aaron Pettway gives Oklahoma State a #1 seed.

Worst Case Scenario: The loss of Tony Allen proves to be too much, and the Cowboys can't compensate for the loss, and gives the Cowboys a 5-8 seed.

Most Likely Scenario: Not having Tony Allen hurts slightly, but the Cowboys overcome, and get a 2 or 3 seed.

        OU analysis shortly.

            Re: The Daily Oklahoman

            03-04 record 20-11

A dissapointing season by Sooner basketball standards has both fans and players wanting more this season, a freshman loaded team last year, is now more experienced. They could certainly make a deep run in the NCAA's.

            Guards *denotes starter

            Andrew Lavender* 5'7 153 SO

Undersized but more than makes up for it with his explosiveness. A solid 3 point, and foul shooter. A year of experience should have helped his game this upcoming year.

            Terrel Everett* 6'4 185 JR

A JUCO transfer, he looks to pay immediate dividens for the Sooners, a slasher by nature, Everett has worked on his outside game and has a chance of being OU's leading scorer this season.

            Jaison Williams* 6'3 181 SR

The third part of this 3 guard lineup. Williams is solid in everything. An above average shooter, and a terrific defender, Williams will bring senior leadership to this team.

            Lawerence McKenizie 6'2 175 SO

Possibly the best shooter from beyond the arc for the Sooners, he'll most likely be the sixth man. Could easily be the starter if any one the other 3 guards fail.

            Kellen Sampson 6'1 182 FR

Son of head coach Kelvin Sampson, redshirted last season. A walk on, but knows the game like the back of his hand due to being coach's son.

            David Godbold 6'5 212 FR

A true freshman, that is very strong, doesn't look to receive much playing time this season, but after a year of working on his shooting and defense, he could be ready to contribute.

            Forwards

            Taj Gray* 6'8 235 JR

A superstar at the JUCO level. Gray looks to take his game to a whole 'nother level this year in the Big XII. He combines size and speed to make him almost unguardable in the post.

            Kevin Bookout* 6'8 259

A bull in the paint, but has a very soft touch around the basket. Along with Taj Gray, should provide a fantasic duo. A solid rebounder.

            Johnnie Gilbert 6'8 228 SR

Not much of a scorer, but that's not what his role is. He's there to shut down the opposing team in the post, and grab tough rebounds and block shots.

            Longar Longar 6'11 215 FR

Tall and lean. Has the ability to become one of the Big XII's elite. Long arms make him a great shot blocker, a couple of years to develop and he could be great.

            Centers

            No true center on team.

            Summary:

This team is much better than last year's. If the two players in the post (Bookout and Gray) can do what they have the ability to, the guards can just fall into place and watch the wins go on the scoreboard.

Best Case Scenario: Gray makes the transition to the Big XII without a hitch and Bookout comes off of a dissapointing year, too make this the best frontcourt in the BigXII, and the Sooners are looking at a run at a Big XII championship and a 2 or 3 seed.

Worst Case Scenario: Injuries take out an already thin team, and the guards and the guards shot's don't fall, and this team is fighting for a tourney spot.

Most Likely Scenario: This is a solid team that will be even better next year, and achieves a 5 or 6 seed in the tournament.

I changed the ratings of some players:

I made Taj Gray(Everything) better, Kevin Bookout (Everything), and Terrel Everett (Everything)

I made Johnnie Gilbert (He's a horrible scorer, so I lowered that quite a bit) and Jaison Williams (I lowered his shooting atributes.) worse.

                03-04 record 9-21

A WAC powerhouse 5 years ago, the decline in Tulsa basketball has been a steep one. But a weaker conference is always easier to make a huge jump in, and the Golden Hurricane have as good as chance as anybody.

                Guards *denotes starter

                Seneca Collins* 6'4 240 JR

                A two-year letterwinner . . . has played in 60 career games and averages 4.6 points (275) and 1.5 rebounds (92) . . . has eight career double-figure scoring games, a solid shooter from the outside.

                Chris Wallace* 6'2 185 JR

A two-year letterwinner . . . has played in 53 career games and has started three games . . . averaged 1.3 career points, getting a chance to start this season, is a solid defender and can shoot the trey.

                Deion James 6'1 180 FR

True freshman, who will get significant minutes this season. A possible starter at the point next season after a year under his belt.

                Brett McDade 6'0 165 FR

Fantastic ballhandler and quicker with the ball then some are without. Needs to work on other aspects of the game before becoming a starter.

                Kyle Blankenship 6'0 185 SR

                In his fourth year at Tulsa . . . a walk-on athlete . . . saw valuable playing time last year following a red-shirt season in 2002-03 . . . has played in 26 career games . . . averages 1.4 career points. A serious 3 point threat.

                Forwards

                Jarius Glenn* 6'6 220 SR

A three-year letterwinner and two-year starter . . . has played in all 96 games since coming to Tulsa, and has 50 career starts, the best player on the Tulsa squad. Plays bigger than he actually is. Can step out and hit the 3 on occasion.

                Yusuf Baker* 6'8 220 JR

Coming out of JUCO, looks to add some serious scoring punch to the Tulsa team. Has a variety of moves in the paint to terroize opponents. One of the better rebounders in the WAC.

                Guilherme Teichmann* 6'9 205 SR

A solid big man, a solid post defender, and has been working on his shooting in the offseason.

                Anthony Price 6'8 205 JR

Will get a lot of minutes off the bench this season. A good shot blocker, that could fight for a starting spot.

                Oswaldo Gonzalez 6'9 220 SR

Intimidating. Surpisingly agile in the paint, and catches defenders by suprise with his offensive game.

                Vernell Davis 6'8 220 JR

JUCO transfer, was a leading rebounder at NEO, and looks to provide needed help on the glass this season off the bench.

                Centers

                Charles Ramsdell 6'10 205

Big man with some shooting range. Needs to put on some weight, then could contend for WAC honors by his senior year.

                Best Case Scenario
JUCO transfer Yusuf Baker and Jarius Glenn provide a deadly 1-2 punch and contend for a WAC title.

                Worst Case Scenario
Team commits too many turnover because of their young guards, and Baker's game doesn't translate well.

                Most Likely Scenario
Another season of growing pains, but the 2 freshman guards (McDade and James) gain valuable minutes and become a standout backcourt in the future

                Oral Robert analysis soon.

                    03-04 record: 19-11

A young team last year, is only going to get better. Plus with their point guard of 2 years ago back off of injury it's only going to get better.

                    Guards *denotes starter

                    Luke Spencer-Gardner* 6'1 185 SR

Back off of a leg injury that cost him all of the season. A tremendous passer and ballhandler, looks to add some senior leadership that they needed last season. A solid shooter from beyond the arc.

                    Ken Tutt* 6'1 175 SO

Led the nation in 3 point % last season, possibly the best shooter in the nation. A supberb ball handler. Mid-Con preseason player of the year.

                    Jonathan Bluitt 5'9 160 JR

Should be a sparkplug off the bench. A solid 3 point shooter that can go off any given night.

                    Chris Riouse 6'2 185 JR

JUCO transfer that can create his own shot and nail the long range bomb

                    Mike Morgan 6'3 180 SO

Sophomore that is a likely redshirt candidate.

                    Forwards

                    Larry Owens* 6'7 200 JR

Guard in a forward's body. Provides highlight dunks and is a good rebounder. On any other WAC team would be the first offensive option.

                    Caleb Green* 6'7 240 SO

A fantastic talent. Undersized, but uses it to his advantage. Fights for every rebound, and wins it almost every time. A great scorer in the paint.

                    Eric Fowlkes 6'4 200 SR

Plays bigger than he actually is. Will go out and give it his all, and fght for loose balls. A tremendous leaper and dunker.

                    Moses Ehambe 6'5 207 FR

Very quick for how big he is. Will provide solid defense and a steady shot from outside off the bench. Could be great in a couple of years.

                    Yemi Ogunoye 6'8 210 SO

Long armed solid defender that will be a solid contributer to this team.

                    Andrew Meloy 6'5 200 SR

Good shooter, but not big enough for the post and not a good enough ball handler or defender for the wing. Still will see some minutes due to his shooting capabilites.

                    Schuyler Thomas 6'9 220 SR

Will recieve a medical redshirt this season. But when he returns next year, he will be a inalvuable post player.

                    Centers

                    Matt Gatsel* 6'11 230 SR

Uses his size to shoot over people. A solid rebounder.

                    Mickey Michalec 6'10 255 JR

Transfered from Texas Tech two seasons ago. Will add even more solid depth inside for the Golden Eagles. A good defender in the post.

Best Case Scenario: Tutt and Green are the best 2 in the Mid-Con. Owens and Spencer-Gardner contend for All-Conference, and Gatsel grabs 7 boards a night, this team steamrolls through the rest of the conference straight to the NCAA's, and gets a high seed in the 9-12 range

Worst Case Scenario: Injuries hurt a thin backcourt, and they get a bad seeding in the Mid-Con tourney.

Most Likely Scenario: Tutt and Green are too tough to handle for most teams, and the Golden Eagles make first NCAA appearance since the 70's.

The Tulsa Golden Hurricanes basketball team got the best start they could hope for with a 69-57 victory over the Youngstown St. Penguins in the opening round of the Preseason NIT. Pacing the Golden Hurricanes with 16 points was Guard Seneca Collins who connected on 6 of 7 shots from the field. Also in double figures for Tulsa was Jarius Glenn with 12, and Anthony Price with 10.

JUCO transfer Yusuf Baker, showed how good he really is in limited minutes. In only 20 minutes before fouling out, Baker put in 6 points and grabbed 9 rebounds, 2 of them being offensive.

The highlight of the game was probably when big Guilherme Teichmann nailed a 3 pointer at the end of the first half, just beating the buzzer.

The leading scorer for the Penguins was Guard Jon Mends, who totaled 14 points on the night, 6 of those coming from the charity stripe.

Even after an opening win to the season, Tulsa head coach John Phillips had this to say about the victory, "We fouled way too much, Phillips said of the 30 attempts from the free throw line that Youngstown had, hitting 22. "And if we're going to foul that much, we have to equal them, which we didn't." Tulsa in stark contrast only reached the line 12 times hitting 9.

Tulsa plays Arizona tommorow at 2 P.M in the Quarterfinals of the Preseason NIT.

Arizona Guard Mustafa Shakur torched the Tulsa defense for 22 pts.

John Phillips just hung his head. Turnovers. Turnovers. Turnovers. The one thing he had preached all summer, don't let them happen, and create them on the defensive side of the ball. Well, for this game Tulsa forgot commiting 24 turnovers last night against the staunch Wildcat defense.

The lone bright spot for Tulsa was forward Jarius Glenn, who had 13 points including an eyepopping breakaway dunk in the 1st half. Seneca Collins had another solid game also putting in 13, and Anthony Price joined the double figure club with 10 of his own.

Arizona had 4 in double figures. Shakur had 22 on 9 of 16 shooting, and Channing Frye led everyone with 27 pts. Inlcuding 9 from beyond the arc and 8 from the charity stripe. Salim Stoudamire chipped in 12, and Chris Rodgers added 14 to the equation.

Arizona advances to play Michigan tommorow for the chance at advancing to the Preseason NIT final.

Anthony Price looks for the open man
