Re: Hammertime! Connor Davies, a Outside Linebackers Perspective

Inside Lane Stadium in the Media Room, there is a buzz in the crowd. Will Linebacker Connor Davies come back for his senior season and try one last time for a National Title, or will he leave for the NFL after the greatest season in Virginia Tech history. The room is filled to the back wall-to-wall with reporters from ESPN and every other major sports media outlet. In the front on a small stage is a tiny table with a Hokies banner in the background, and Connor's jersey draped on the front of the podium.

        AD:
I'd like to thank you all for gathering today. Connor would like to announce his intentions for the future.

Connor: I never thought this many people would turn out for a press conference featuring me, but many things have changed since becoming a Hokie three years ago. Thanks to the great staff, Coach Beemer, Coach Frederickson, and all the other coaches I have ever had, I have become a better football player then I could have ever imagined. My goals were simple when I started here at Virginia Tech. Win the ACC, we've done that, Become an All-American, I've done that, and win a National Championship, we've not done that. This decision has weighed on me over the past two months since the season ended with our loss in the Orange Bowl.

Connor begins to tear up slightly, Coach Beemer pats him on the back.

        Beemer:
What Connor is trying to say is that he will declare himself eligible for the NFL draft. I'm thankful that such a player came to Virginia Tech and taught the younger players well this season as a captain. He will not be easily replaced, and whichever team drafts him will be getting one hell of a ball player.

Connor gets up and hugs Coach Beemer. He turns and leaves the stage with the media yelling questions inaudibly to him.

Re: Hammertime! Connor Davies, a Outside Linebackers Perspective

It's late April, time again for the annual NFL draft. Hundreds of hopeful college athletes will have their dreams come true as they will be drafted and begin their careers in pursuit of the Lombardi trophy and the hall of fame. Many drafted today will not make it in the NFL, but for Connor Davies, he will be one of the few that will have a career here.

Connor is sitting at a table in front of the capacity crowd in New York City. He is the top rated outside linebacker on Mel Kiper's board, and is expected to go second overall to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Surrounded by his mother, father, and sister Amy, Connor waits as the first four picks come off the board.

            Connor:
I thought I was headed to Tampa. They seemed so sure they were going to pick me, and they go WR?

Father: The Redskins are up next, how great would that be.

With the 5th selection, the Washington Redskins select....

Disappointment for Connor, he isn't selected in the top 10, waiting still for that call.

            Roger Goodell:
Saint Louis are now on the clock.

Suddenly the phone Connor had placed on the table begins to vibrate.

            Voice:
This is Steve Spagnuolo. How would you like to be a Ram?

With a shakey voice, Connor meekly answers.

            Connor:
            I'd love to Coach.

RG: With the 11th selection in the 2012 NFL Draft, the St. Louis Rams select Linebacker from Virginia Tech, Connor Davies.

The Rams fans in the crowd burst into a Davies! Davies! Davies! chant. Connor calmly walks up onto the stage and shakes hands with Roger Goodell.

            RG:
            Welcome to the league son.

            Connor: Thank you sir.

Sorry I've not really updated anything. OTAs and Training camp have kicked my butt. First preseason game is coming up @ the Jets soon.

New Experience August 15, 2012 - 12:00am Posted by AllstarMe

What a crazy feeling it was to be the new guy on the football field. I've gone from the big fish in a little pond my whole life to an extremely tine fish in a gigantic pond. Things will come to me, but it'll take time.

We went up 19-0, and it looked like we'd run away with it, but the third stringers on our defense got destroyed by the Jets third string offense to the tune of 22 fourth quarter points for them. I returned a punt, played on the kickoff and return, and on the punt, stuff I've never done before, and I had a lot of fun doing it.

                22
                29

                2 Tackles

They both came on special teams. When I was in on regular defense I felt so out of place. This new system is nothing like I've ever played before, and I'm still really getting used to it.

End of my Dreams August 18, 2012 - 2:05pm Posted by AllstarMe

Yesterday in practice I suffered a catastrophic knee injury. It was one of those freak things you can't really control, but that wasn't the main issue I had with my health. I've been having acute chest pains and random shortnesses of breath over the past year or two, but thought nothing of it.

I had a weird reaction to the medication they gave me for my knee, and when they looked into it they discovered a large defect in my heart. I'll need surgery to fix it, and it will most likely put an end to my football career. The Rams have been great through it, and although I only suited up for one preseason game, They are honoring my signing bonus, and paying all my medical bills on top of it. I'm sad I'll never get a chance to play in a Super Bowl, Pro Bowl, or even a regular season game, but football has given me more than I could ever imagine.

Hopefully one day I'll be back in the NFL as a Coach. I'll miss playing, but am happy I'll live a normal life now. Thank you all for being fans, and I hope to keep in touch with all of you.
