#1 Oregon defeated #2 Stanford in what some are calling "Game of the Century". Oregon scored a FG early, and that was the difference, as in a back and forth battle Oregon slipped past Stanford 38-35 despite Andrew Luck throwing for 5 TD's and over 400 yards.

#3 Michigan State held off Iowa 21-19
#17 Boise State defeated #7 TCU 42-28 thanks to Kellen Moore returning and going 29/41 for 417 yards and 5 TDs.

#11 Illinois continued their dream season with a 30-24 victory over Michigan

Rankings and Season Analysis

There has been a lot of debate over teams their worthiness this year. One half of the National Title Picture looks clear as of right now, if Oregon can win out over USC and Oregon State and the Pac 12 title game they are in the national title. But Utah is looking good in the Pac 12 south right now, and wins over USC and Oregon State never come easy. It will be a long road to finish undefeated.

Meanwhile, if Michigan State and Penn State win out whoever wins the Big 10 title game will also go to the national title game. Penn State has to defeat Ohio State and Wisconsin to get there, while Michigan State has an easier road with Indiana and Northwestern.

The ACC front runner Virginia Tech and Big 12 leader Missouri both are hoping for two of the top teams to slip up, ideally Oregon and whoever loses the Big 10 title game. A 1 loss Big 10 champion, especially Penn State, could claim a legit shot at the title over an undefeated ACC and Big 12 champion with a big win over the #2 team in the nation in the last week of the season.

Virginia Tech has UNC and Virginia and the ACC title game to finish the season, and none of those games look to challenging. They should easily finish 13-0.

Missouri has played an amazing season, and nobody expected them to go 8-2 to start 2011 let alone 10-0. They only have to defeat Texas Tech and Kansas. Texas Tech looks like a snoozer, but never under estimate the Jayhawks in the Border War and their No Huddle spread offense with is averaging nearly 300 yards a game in passing will be hard for the Tigers to contain.

Alabama is the clear 1 loss favorite to make the leap to the NT game if it becomes available. Their only loss is to Penn State, in the opening game of the season, and the Nittany Lions are currently 10-0 and controlling their own destiny for the national title game. The Tide fans are hoping for a chance at revenge in the national championship. But the Tide need Oregon, Virginia Tech, Missouri, and Michigan State to lose to get there.

Stanford, Illinois and Oklahoma State all have back door chances at the title game. With neither one having to play in a title game, if 3 or more of the top 5 teams slip up then either one could play for the national title.

Undefeated Southern Miss (10-0) has no shot at playing for the national title unless huge upsets happen. Despite being the only undefeated non AQ, TCU and Boise State are the likely candidates to receive BCS bids, while Southern Miss will have to be satisfied with 13-0 if they win out.

Current prediction: With Oregon having such a rough road left and Michigan State wanting to disprove all the doubters, ESPN predicts a Michigan State vs Virginia Tech title game.

Game Notes Texas Tech enters the year attempting to spoil Missouri's magical season. Missouri cannot afford any slip ups if they wish to go to the national championship. A loss won't hurt the Tigers BCS chances, as they only need to go 1-1 to be guaranteed to make the 2012 Fiesta Bowl. The Red Raiders must win if they wish to have any chance of going to a bowl game this year. They must win out, defeating Missouri and Baylor. Missouri is not as large a favorite as one might think, as the Red Raiders run a prolific offense that preys on the Tigers weak spot, the passing game. Although as time has shown, the Tigers may give up lots of passing yards but they manage to hold on and shut down the pass when it's most important.

Texas Tech almost ruins Missouri Tigers Dream Season

When Texas Tech walked into Faurot Field the Tiger fans were not really concerned about the Red Raiders. More attention was focused on the Oregon vs USC score and Penn State at Ohio State, to see if Missouri could get a break to make the BCS national title game.

Luckily the coaching staff and players were ready, as the Red Raiders made their intentions known early with an opening drive TD on A. Zouzalik's 72 yard catch from Seth Doege.

Missouri fired back with J. Jackson and James Franklin, driving 93 yards to score a TD on Jackson's 41 yard catch. The first quarter ended with the two sides trading punts, and it was a 7-7 tie in Columbia.

Missouri pulled ahead in the second quarter thanks to G. Ressel nailing a pair of 36 yard field goals, and Bolden sacking S. Doege on 3nd and long for a safety, giving Missouri a 12-0 lead. Missouri scored on the ensuing possession with G. Ressel nailing a 20 yarder, going to halftime with a 18-7 advantage.

Texas Tech refused to surrender, and A. Zouzalik instantly lit things up with a blazing 83 yard TD to make it 18-14. James Franklin ran in a TD for MU, but D. Carona hit a 32 yard chip shot to make it 25-17 as the third quarter ended, still anyone's ball game.

The fourth quarter put Bedlam from 2010 to shame, as Texas Tech and Missouri exploded for a combined 37 points.

The game looked out of reach with Missouri ahead 35-17 with 3:55 left, but T. Swindall catch an 80 yard pass that went for a TD, and after holding Missouri to a field goal, Texas Tech struck again with A. Torres going 49 yards for a TD and making it 38-31 with 1:32 left in the game.

Missouri tried to run out the clock after recovering the onside, but ended up kicking a field goal with 56 seconds left after a rush by Moore got them in range. Texas Tech struck back with A. Torres again, this time marching down quickly and hitting Torres on first and goal from the 7 with a 7 yard strike to make it 41-38. Missouri grabbed the onside kick and knelt down to end the game, 41-38.

Michigan State fans upset at #3 ranking, other BCS news, 2 Rose Bowls?

While Michigan State fans are upset at Penn State taking the #2 spot in the BCS from them, whoever wins the Big 10 title will get into the BCS title game. Unless of course they lose a game between now and then.
Penn State faces #13 Wisconsin this week, and Michigan State faces Northwestern. Penn State is a slight favorite against Wisconsin due to beating Illinois who beat Wisconsin but there is no transitivity in football and Wisconsin will be looking to end the season on a good note and possibly get a bid to the Capital One bowl.

The ranking to be ashamed of is Southern Miss going 11-0 and only being #17 in the BCS. While they haven't beaten anyone of high regard, at this point they have not been challenged and it would be a shame for Boise State to go to the BCS over USM since Boise State has 2 losses, both to non AQ competitors.

Missouri needs two of the top three players to slip up, the best chances of that are #1 Oregon vs Oregon State and #2 Penn State vs #13 Wisconsin to get into the BCS National Championship, or else they have no reason to defeat Kansas besides trying to finish perfect, as the Tigers are locked into the Fiesta Bowl at worst now.

Due to a possible Big 10 vs Pac 12 national championship game, there exists two at large bid possibilities for the Rose Bowl. Due to the BCS's new strict chose the best team available policy for bowls, the Rose will select the two best available at the time, and right now that would be Illinois/loser of the Big 10 title game, and Stanford. Which would give us fans two Rose Bowl matchups (Big 10 vs Pac 12) this year.

Game Notes The Border War is always a competitive and great game, but the stakes for this game are as high as ever. #4 Missouri has guaranteed themselves a trip to the Fiesta Bowl regardless, but a victory and things falling just right will give them their first trip to the BCS National Championship. It's been a dream season already, with a cinched BCS Bowl Game and 11 wins. Kansas (7-4) has been waiting to ruin Missouri's day ever since Missouri ruined the 2007 Kansas Jayhawks perfect season with a 36-28 triumph. Kansas is averaging over 300 yards a game passing, and KU Head Coach Turner Gill has personally vowed that if KU scores less then 35 points or less then 330 yards passing he will eat his shirt. Apparently he is allowed one condiment if he wishes..

Kansas Jayhawks make 2011 Border War one to remember

The #4 Missouri Tigers (11-0) ventured into Jayhawk Stadium with a 2 game winning streak on the line, but the Jayhawks had nothing to lose. At 7-4 the Jayhawks really wouldn't improve bowl position or conference position that drastically with a win, but defeating the undefeated Missouri Tigers, the first undefeated squad the Tigers had since 1960, that was to good to not try everything to win.

Kansas started it off with a 45 yard TD rush by J. Sims on 3rd and 6 but offensive holding ruined the play and KU had to punt. Missouri went 3 and out, and T. Beibre and J. Webb hooked up for a 62 yard TD catch to put KU up 7-0.

MU tied the game late in the 1st, and then went on a 20-7 run in the second quarter to walk into the half up 27-14. The Border War was a good game, but nothing like people expected. Kansas either struck deep or went 3 and out every single possession it seemed.

The 3rd quarter was more of the same, as Kansas struck 3 times, all of them 78 yard or longer strikes while MU worked the short game. The difference maker was the defense as Will Ebner scooped up a and rumbled 49 yards for a TD for Missouri, making it 40-28 with 1:51 left in the 3rd.

Missouri stopped KU on 4th down and then scored on a 21 yard pass to J. Jackson to take a 47-28 lead. Kansas fired back with an 85 yard single play drive, a deep pass to M. Jackson to make it 47-35 at the end of the third.

The 4th quarter started with KU striking first, K. Pick grabbed a short crossing route passing and scrambled 36 yards for the TD. MU fumbled the kickoff returned, and KU scored with J. Sims walking across the goal line. KU missed the 2 point conversion, but still held their first lead of the game since it was 7-0, as the Jayhawks went up 48-47.

M. Egnew grabbed a 0 yard catch on MU's next drive, and MU hit the 2 point conversion to take a 55-48 lead. On the very next drivefor Kansas MU's own Resonno drove through the line and forced a fumble, setting up a short field. TJ Moe scored a 16 yard TD, and MU took a 62-45 lead with 2:19 left, and MU's fans went nuts, the game was over.

KU didn't appreciate the lack of respect, and K. Pick grabbed a 70 yard TD for make it 62-55. Kansas held Missouri to 3 and out and used all but one timeout, and then K. Pick hauled in another pass, this time for 63 yards to tie the game at 62-62 with 1:28 left.

MU responded with a long drive and TJ Moe stepped up and hauled in a beautiful 22 yard pass to make it 69-62. KU fired back with Pick again for fourth TD for the quarter on a 61 yard bomb with no time left as KU sent it to overtime, 69-69 thanks to an amazing 34 points fourth quarter.


In overtime K. Edwards picked off J. Webb on 3rd and 2, but was ran down 9 yards from returning it for a TD. J. Franklin was knocked out of the game on 2nd and 15, but luckily G. Ressel stepped up and made the only FG asked of him all day, a 37 yard chip shot to win the game 72-69.

#1 Oregon overcame a 20-3 deficit at halftime to beat Oregon State 31-23
#4 Missouri defeated Kansas 72-69 in OT
#2 Penn State defeated #13 Wisconsin 21-17 with a TD with 0:07 left

All eyes on Bedlam this week, BCS news

With the NCAA required break in scheduling if your conference has a conference championship, the week is quite quiet. #11 Oklahoma (9-2) is traveling to Stillwater, OK to take on #8 Oklahoma State (10-1) in what is most likely a battle for an at large BCS birth.



In the WAC, a 3 way tie is going to break out for the 2nd year in a row if Nevada (9-2, 5-1) handles Idaho. Nevada break Fresno State (6-5) who beat Hawaii (7-3) who beat Nevada. It's shades of 2010 all over again, only this time nobody is ranked. It's quite ironic Nevada and Hawaii will have shared the title twice, with Boise State swapped out with Fresno State. Next year all 3 of these teams will toil in the MWC with Boise State. In 8 days it will be announced if the MWC receives a BCS exemption to become an AQ conference for the next 2 years.

Boise State is holding onto hope for #23 Houston (10-2) to defeat #14 Southern Miss (12-0) next week in the C-USA conference championship. Due to the Big East not having a single ranked team right now, as long as a non AQ conference champion is ranked in the top 16 of the BCS they are guaranteed a spot. Boise State is currently #9, and since they are the MWC champions, as long as they handle New Mexico and Southern Miss loses they are guaranteed a spot despite their 2 loss record. If Southern Miss wins they will most likely jump the Broncos in the BCS standings, since nobody wants a 2 loss non AQ to potentially embarrass an AQ team.

Conference champions, Conference Championship Game Previews
ACC: This is Virginia Tech's game to lose. Had they not stumbled to UNC earlier this year they would be one of the top contenders to slip into the title game if Oregon stumbles in the inaugural Pac 12 championship game.

Big East: USF (8-4) is the Big East Champion

Big XII: #4 Missouri (12-0) is the Big XII champion

Big 10: The winner goes to the national championship. This is incredible, the first year of the new Big 10 and they have 3 teams in the top 6 of the BCS standings, and two are undefeated meeting for the Big 10 title!

C-USA: The second largest Houston fanbase right now has to be in Boise Idaho. If Southern Miss loses then Boise State is guaranteed to be the highest ranking non AQ champion, and as long as they don't fall of the top 16 in the BCS this week they are guaranteed to go to the BCS due to the Big East's USF (8-4) being unranked.

MAC: Miami Ohio is the favorite in this matchup, but not by much.

MWC: #10 Boise State (10-2) is the MWC champion

Pac 12: #1 Oregon has to defeat #21 Arizona again and they are BCS National Championship bound for the second year in a row. Arizona only lost to Oregon, Stanford, and Oklahoma State all season, a trifecta of teams that has a combined 3 losses all year, all to teams with a combined 3 losses. Arizona took Oregon to the wire earlier this year, look for it to a be a great game.

SEC: #15 South Carolina (10-2) is ready for this game, but #5 Alabama (11-1) is the favorites because they want revenge for the loss that knocked them out of BCS National contention last year and Bama's only loss this year is to current #1 Penn State.

Sun Belt: Troy is the 2011 Sun Belt champion

WAC: Nevada (10-2), Hawaii (8-4), and Fresno State (6-6) are co-champions in the WAC

The curse of the Big 10?

In 2006 the Wisconsin Badgers went 11-1 with their only loss to Michigan who finished the season 11-1 and #3 in the BCS. Unfortunately the Badgers were left out of the BCS due to the limit of 2 teams per conference rule, as #1 Ohio State (12-0) also went to the BCS bowls.

In 2010 #9 Michigan State (11-1) was left out of the BCS bowls as #5 Wisconsin (11-1) and #6 Ohio State (11-1) both went to the BCS.

Now it 2011, the Big 10 fields three great teams again. #1 Penn State (12-0), #3 Michigan State (12-0), and #6 Illinois (10-1).

The loser of the Big 10 title game won't drop much in the standings, and if it is Penn State odds are they will stay ahead of the Fighting Illini due to their H2H victory over Illinois. The sad loser of the Big 10 season will be the one team that is ranked lowest in the final BCS poll of the season, due to the new selection procedure of taking the highest possible candidate most of the time.

Only time will tell, but at least there won't be a controversy about who deserves to be in the title game. Oh wait, there are 4 undefeated teams with 3 from BCS conferences? Darn..

Big 10 #3 Michigan State won the right to their first ever BCS National Championship Game with a hard fought closer than it looks 31-21 victory over #1 Penn State

C-USA #23 Houston busted #14 Southern Miss's BCS hopes with a 28-21 OT victory.

MAC Miami (Ohio) defeated Northern Illinois 19-3 to win the MAC

PAC 12 #1 Oregon overcame a 21-7 halftime deficit to win the first ever Pac 12 conference championship game 45-38 in double overtime over #21 Arizona.

SEC #15 South Carolina shocked #5 Alabama 43-17 to earn a Sugar Bowl Berth.

Bowl Previews

#2 Oregon (13-0) gets their second straight shot at the national title while #1 Michigan State (13-0) makes their first ever BCS Bowl Appearance. Oregon appears to be the favorite, but it will be a great game no matter who wins.


While to many the true Rose Bowl is taking place as the BCS National Championship at the Sugar Bowl, this consolation warmup Rose Bowl featuring #4 Penn State (12-1) and #6 Stanford (11-1) is a very nice treat. Stanford has the edge with their passing attack, but Penn State is full of surprises, the Lions weren't even picked to win their division let alone go 12-1 this season.


#9 South Carolina (11-2) already took out what people considered the best 1 loss team of the land in Alabama, now they face arguably one of the worst conference champions this year in USF. If it's not over by the half South Carolina is doing something wrong.


#24 Florida State (9-4) will get their chance at revenge for their beat down at the hands of #7 Oklahoma (10-2) earlier this year. Oklahoma is the odds on favorite, but people said that about Virginia Tech in the ACC Title game also.


#3 Missouri (12-0) is at the middle of a dream season, and #11 Boise State (10-2) wants to play spoiler. Boise State is making their third trip to the Fiesta Bowl while Missouri is making their second, their first one was back in 1972 where they lost to Arizona State.

Boise State only made it to the BCS thanks to some kind non-AQ rules, since USF and Florida State where both AQ conference champions and ranked below #12, Boise State only had to be ranked in the top 16 and the highest ranked non AQ champion. They had an easier road than Missouri, but there is doubt about their quality since their two losses were to non AQ's #25 Nevada (10-2) and #21 Tulsa (8-4).

Missouri is the favorite, but Boise State's Kellen Moore looks to take advantage of the weak Missouri pass defense which was horribly exposed in the Border War against Kansas. If Boise State was not a non AQ, or Missouri wasn't one, then Boise State would most likely be the favorite, as Boise State has only lost 2 games when Kellen Moore has played healthy. (2008 Poinsetta Bowl, 2010 vs Nevada).


In the high lite of the non BCS bowl season, #8 Alabama (11-2) and #5 Illinois (10-1) face off in a classic SEC vs Big 10 battle, but it is also a highly featured bowl where both teams are ranked higher than a BCS bowl (Sugar Bowl). Alabama would have went to the Sugar had they not dropped the SEC Title game, Illinois only lost to Penn State all year, but due to that and being the 3rd big 10 team in the top 5, they are not allowed into the BCS Bowls this year.

Alabama looks to make up for their loss to South Carolina, but Illinois looks like the favorite as Alabama's offense appears soft.


For the fourth straight year TCU finished in the top 11 of the BCS rankings, and for the second time of those four they aren't going to the BCS. Their only loss was to Boise State, who is actually the only team to defeat TCU since 2008. (Boise beat TCU in January 2010, and also in the 2011 regular season), and they finished higher in the BCS than Boise but due to the non AQ conference champion rules, Boise State gets to go to the Fiesta Bowl and TCU has to return to the Maaco Las Vegas bowl, where they face Arizona State (7-5). TCU is the huge favorite, but Arizona State played a stacked schedule against #2 Oregon, #3 Missouri, #22 Arizona, #5 Illinois, and Utah (9-3).

MWC granted temporarily exempt status

Thanks to the efforts of the TCU Horne Frogs and the Boise State Broncos, the MWC has earned itself an exemption granted by the BCS to be an AQ conference for the 2012 and 2013 bowl seasons. While the loss of the TCU was a concern, the addition of Nevada and Hawaii and Fresno State seemed to offense the balance as in a unanimous vote the BCS committee made the MWC the 7th AQ conference.

The MWC was desired by the Fiesta Bowl, but surprisingly the Orange Bowl also wanted a piece of the action. The only bowl to not want anything to do with the MWC? The Sugar Bowl. Apparently a SEC vs MWC matchup is not desired, although nobody can blame the SEC after Boise State took care of their pride and joy Georgia earlier this year.

The MWC bid will be an at large, much like the Big East's, who keeps their BCS status until 2013 when all conferences will be reviewed again.
