Trooper Tayor: The Making of a Name.
New Mexico State hires unknown high school head coach, Trooper Taylor, for the recently vacated offensive coordinator position. Head football caoch Dewayne Walker said,"We liked the way he ran his offense in high school. He effectively ran a pistol heavy playbook with great success."

2011 New Mexico State Aggies Preview
OFFENSE
OVERALL - D
Quarterbacks
1. #2 Matt Christian 6'3'' 211lbs SR [66 ovr]
2. #8 Tanner Rust 6'2'' 200lbs SO(RS) [62 ovr]
3. #16 Andrew Manley 6'3'' 225lbs SO [58 ovr]
#17 Travaughn Colwell 6'3'' 185lbs FR [58 ovr]
Overall - D
None of these quarterbacks is NFL quality, but neither were any of Coach Taylor's when he coached high school. For now Matt Christian is called the starter, but don't be surprised if he is over taken by Rust.
Halfbacks
1. #3 Kenny Turner 5'10'' 192lbs JR [78 ovr]
2. #29 Victor Clay 5'11'' 230lbs JR(RS) [58 ovr]
3. #23 James Hall 5'8'' 175lbs SO(RS) [57 ovr]
4. #21 Brandon BentanCourt 5'11'' 185lbs FR [50 ovr]
#28 Robert Clay 5'10'' 187lbs JR [65 ovr]
Overall - D
Kenny Turner is the best player on this team and he will get a lot of touches this season, even though the depth here is very sub-par.
Fullbacks
1. #25 Germi Morrison 6'0'' 191lbs JR [58 ovr]
Overall - D-
Germi Morrison may see a lot more playing time with this new offense brought in by Taylor, or he may get replaced by one of the tight ends.
Wide Receivers
1. #7 Todd Lee 5'9'' 160lbs SR [69 ovr]
2. #1 Taveon Rogers 6'0'' 181lbs SR [69 ovr]
3. #9 Darrius Preston 6'1'' 168lbs JR(RS) [66 ovr]
4. #10 Marcus Williams 6'3'' 187lbs SR [64 ovr]
5. #5 Julius Flemming 5'8'' 180lbs SR [51 ovr]
#4 Austin Franklin 6'2'' 175lbs FR [66 ovr]
#89 Joseph Matthews 6'1'' 175lbs FR [56 ovr]
Overall - D
This receiving corps isn't the best in the WAC, but they can take some pressure of Turner.
Tight Ends
1. #82 Stephen McIntyre 6'0'' 213lbs SO [66 ovr]
2. #15 Trevor Walls 6'5'' 232lbs JR(RS) [63 ovr]
3. #22 David Quiroga 6'1'' 217lbs JR [40 ovr]
#14 Matthew Jaramillo 6'5'' 245lbs FR [54 ovr]
Overall - D-
Stephen McIntyre is a young star well on the rise, remember his name you may hear it a lot.
Tackles
1LT. #74 Davonte Wallace 6'4'' 257lbs SO [67 ovr]
1RT. #76 Aundre McGaskey 6'6'' 297lbs SR [69 ovr]
2LT. #75 Taylor Lenzmeier 6'5'' 275lbs FR(RS) [63 ovr]
2RT. #79 Jake Swenson 6'6'' 296lbs SO(RS) [57 ovr]
3LT. #71 Maveu Heimuli 6'4'' 338lbs JR [48 ovr]
3RT. #73 Faison McKinnis 6'7'' 300lbs FR [43 ovr]
Overall - D-
This offensive line is sketchy at best, but Wallace and Lenzmeier show a brighter future for NMSU quarterbacks.
Guards
1LG. #58 DeJuan Yates 6'2'' 276lbs SR(RS) [68 ovr]
1RG. #78 Andrew Kersten 6'6'' 305lbs JR [69 ovr]
2LG. #63 Mike Yocius 6'4'' 312lbs JR [55 ovr]
2RG. #50 Valerian Ume Ezeoke 6'2'' 267lbs FR [44 ovr]
Overall - D-
The interior of the line is pretty solid, but they need to bring in some young guys before it gets away from them.
Centers
1. #72 Sioeli Fakalata 6'3'' 340lbs SR [71 ovr]
2. #62 Mike Grady 6'3'' 306lbs SR(RS) [70 ovr]
3. #65 Ryan Arbelaez 6'1'' 273lbs SO [53 ovr]
Overall - D
Much like the Guard position, the Centers are pretty solid and the Aggies have some decent depth here.
DEFENSE
OVERALL - D
Defensive Ends
1LE. #48 Pierre Fils 6'3'' 245lbs SR [68 ovr]
1RE. #52 Donte Savage 6'4'' 239lbs SR [70 ovr]
2LE. #57 Gino Martinez 6'2'' 230lbs FR(RS) [63 ovr]
2RE. #90 David Niumatalolo 6'2'' 245lbs SR [67 ovr]
3LE. #13 Anthony Smith 6'1'' 216lbs SR [58 ovr]
3RE. #60 Chance Roberts 6'5'' 227lbs SO(RS) [48 ovr]
Overall - D
One of the most solid positions on this team, with Fils and Savage anchoring the outside.
Defensive Tackles
1. #51 Tommy Stuart 6'3'' 315lbs JR [69 ovr]
2. #98 David Mahoney 6'3'' 280lbs SR [67 ovr]
3. #93 Sean Brown 6'3'' 265lbs SO(RS) [61 ovr]
4. #26 LaFelton Traxler 5'9'' 228lbs SR(RS) [40 ovr]
#91 Augafa Vaaulu 6'3'' 295lbs SO [61 ovr]
#81 Stephen Meredith 6'4'' 240lbs [52 ovr]
Overall - D-
The Aggies may not have good depth here, but their top 3 players are very solid.
Outside Linebackers
1LOLB. #53 Bryan Bonilla 6'1'' 217lbs SO(RS) [67 ovr]
1ROLB. #36 B.J. Adolpho 5'11'' 224lbs JR(RS) [75 ovr]
2LOLB. #32 Dylan Davis 6'0'' 230lbs SO [56 ovr]
2ROLB. #45 Michael Matthews 6'1'' 231lbs JR [52 ovr]
#68 Anthony Joyner 6'2'' 223lbs SO [58 ovr]
Overall - D
The only good thing here is B.J. Adolpho, if it wasn't for him teams would run circles around this line backing corps.
Middle Linebackers
1. #47 Boyblue Aoelua 5'10'' 227lbs SR [72 ovr]
2. #96 Numi Lolohea 5'11'' 235lbs JR(RS) [62 ovr]
3. #56 Alexander LaVoy 6'1'' 227lbs SR [55 ovr]
Overall - D
Boyblue is the starter here, with no fear of being overtaken. The Aggies need to keep some fresh blood here.
Corner Backs
1. #3 Donyae Coleman 5'10'' 175lbs SR(RS) [73 ovr]
2. #1 Jonte Green 6'0'' 174lbs SR(RS) [69 ovr]
3. #30 Anthony Edwards 6'0'' 185lbs JR [65 ovr]
4. #11 Jeremy Harris 6'2'' 180lbs JR [49 ovr]
#9 Darien Johnson 5'9'' 164lbs SO [66 ovr]
#20 Samuel Oyenuga 5'10'' 165lbs FR [57 ovr]
Overall - D
Team captain, Donyae Coleman, makes this pedestrian secondary look a lot better.
Free Safety
1. #27 Justin Smith 6'2'' 196lbs SO [66 ovr]
2. #19 Stephen Hatchett 5'8'' 170lbs SR(RS) [64 ovr]
#12 George Callender 6'1'' 191lbs SO [63 ovr]
Overall - D
Justin Smith over took Hatchett for the starting spot and he is only a sophomore, who is just gonna get better.
Strong Safety
1. #6 Ben Bradley 5'10'' 182lbs SR(RS) [62 ovr]
2. #24 Josh Smith 6'2'' 199lbs SO(RS) [53 ovr]
3. #31 Davis Cazares 5'11'' 182lbs SO [45 ovr]
Overall - D-
Except a lot of teams to take advantage of this glaring hole in the defense, called the strong safety.
SPECIAL TEAMS
OVERALL - D+
Kickers
1. #18 Tyler Stampler 5'10'' 171lbs JR [77 ovr]
Overall - C+
Tyler Stampler is one of the best kickers in the WAC and he will be the offenses best friend this season.
Punters
1. #42 Jake Capraro 6'1'' 218lbs FR(RS) [75 ovr]
Overall - C
The Aggie staff is excited to get this young man on the field and start pinning opponents inside their own 20 yard line.
Kick Returners
1. #3 Kenny Turner 5'10'' 192lbs JR [96 ovr]
2. #9 Darrius Preston 6'1'' 168lbs JR(RS) [82 ovr]
Overall - C
Why not use the best player on the team to return punts and kicks. The more touches Kenny Turner has the better chance this team has to win.
Punt Returners
1. #3 Kenny Turner 5'10'' 192lbs JR [96 ovr]
2. #9 Darrius Preston 6'1'' 168lbs JR(RS) [82 ovr]
Team Overall - D
With the new hiring of Trooper Taylor, to help the offense out, this program may be on the right track. The Defense is solid up front and from what Taylor did in college expect the offense to rank near the top of the WAC. But don't expect a championship this year, maybe a top 3.

InjuriesHB Kenny Turner [78 ovr]
Sprained elbow (3 weeks)Game Notes New Mexico State hosts UTEP for their first home game of the season, with the trophy for the battle of I-10 on the line. Last week the Aggies showed that they can at least keep pace with the big boys, their defense played lights out and their offense moved the ball effectively. However this week may not go so well, Kenny Turner is how for the next 3 weeks with an elbow problem. So with the back up running back being in there is not a real threat on the ground. For the Aggies to come out of here with a win the defense is going to have to play good and someone is going to have to step up on offense.
The Battle of I-10 is a rivalry between The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) and New Mexico State University (NMSU). It is called the Battle of I-10 because the two universities are located along Interstate-10 connecting El Paso and Las Cruces.Comment

M. Christian(#2) throws a pass that is intercepted and taken back for 6. Despite throwing this interception Christian had a very good game, throwing for well over 400 yards and 4 touchdowns.
M. Williams(#10) races toward the end zone for a 71 yard touchdown pass, scoring the first points in New Mexico State's impressive second half rally that fell just short.
Here #7 T. Lee catches a deep post pattern and out runs the defense for a 74 yard score. The Aggies' offense had many long plays and Lee was a big part of that, catching six balls for 210 yards and two scores.

On paper their offense is better and their defense is near the top of the division, but with the lack of a running game how effectively can they sustain drive to give the defense a breather. The Spartan's defense ranks near the bottom in every catagory, so this is a good chance to create a running game and carry that momentum into next week.

New Mexico State has racked up 1306 yards on offense and only allowed 1055 yards on defense, in three games this year. Matt Christian leads this explosive passing game throwing for over 1100 yards and 10 touchdowns. The Aggies are gonna need every bit of him and the receiving corps with back up running back Victor Johnson out for the rest of the season and Kenny Turner not expected back till next week, from his elbow injury. This ground game has been non-exsistent for the last three games and expect no different this weekend.
The Rio Grande Rivalry a intercollegiate national known rivalry between The University of New Mexico and New Mexico State University, the rivalry began in 1894.
The current format of the rivalry, awarding each school points based on victories over the other in head-to-head competition, was introduced prior to the start of the 2007-08 academic year. Each head-to-head contest between the institutions in any NCAA varsity sport is worth 1.5 points, with the exception of football, which is worth 3 points, and baseball and softball, in which each game is worth .75 points. The point totals are tabulated at the end of the academic year and a traveling trophy is presented to the school with the greater accumulated points total. The trophy is to be officially presented to the winning school at its first home football or men's basketball game against the other school during the following academic year.Comment
