New Mexico State Aggies 2012 Season Preview

          OFFENSE
          Returning Starters - 4

          QUARTERBACKS
          1. #8 Tanner Rust [67 ovr] 6'2'' 200lbs (RS)Junior
          2. #16 Andrew Manley [63 ovr] 6'3'' 226lbs (RS)Sophomore
          3. #17 Travaughn Colwell [62 ovr] 6'3'' 188lbs (RS)Freshman
          #5 Aaron Allen [55 ovr] 6'2'' 238lbs Freshman

          Overall - D
With Christian graduated Tanner Rust takes the reins of this offense. Rust is a better thrower than Christian but the Aggies lost some receiving threats since last year.

          HALFBACKS
          1. #3 Kenny Turner [84 ovr] 5'10'' 192lbs Senior
          2. #28 Robert Clay [70 ovr] 5'10'' 190lbs (RS)Junior
          3. #29 Victor Johnson [65 ovr] 5'11'' 233lbs (RS)Senior
          4. #23 James Hall [62 ovr] 5'8'' 177lbs (RS)Junior
          5. #21 Brandon Betancourt [57 ovr] 5'11'' 189lbs (RS)Freshman

          Overall - D+
Kenny Turner is back after an injury riddled 2011 season and worked harder than ever in the off season, his goal is to be the leading rusher in the WAC. Also, with Robert Clay off of his red shirt the Aggies have some decent depth so if Turner does re-injure his elbow they will still have a threat in the backfield.

          FULLBACKS
          1. #25 Germi Morrison [62 ovr] 6'0'' 193lbs Senior
          2. #14 Matthew Jaramillo [58 ovr] 6'5'' 252lbs (RS)Freshman

          Overall - D
Germi Morrison lead way for three different backs last year and did a decent job, but new coach Randy Sanders spent much of this off-season was spent on improving the running game. Also, Matthew Jaramillo came over from tight end to add some depth and prepare for next year when Morrison graduates.

          WIDE RECEIVERS
          1. #9 Darrius Preston [71 ovr] 6'1'' 169lbs (RS)Senior
          2. #4 Austin Franklin [69 ovr] 6'2'' 179lbs (RS)Freshman
          3. #89 Joseph Matthews [60 ovr] 6'1'' 179lbs (RS)Freshman
          4. #86 Jay McCoy [51 ovr] 6'3'' 189lbs Freshman
          5. #83 Shawn Gould [48 ovr]6'0'' 168lbs Freshman
          #87 Chris Mullins [58 ovr] 6'1'' 218lbs Freshman
          #84 Mark Johnson [51 ovr] 6'2'' 160lbs Freshman

          Overall - D-
New Mexico State lost some quality receivers last year, but they got Preston back to lead the receiving corps. The Aggies also have some nice young talent, especially so in Austin Franklin.

          TIGHT ENDS
          1. #82 Stephen McIntyre [71 ovr] 6'0'' 215lbs Junior
          2. #15 Trevor Walls [68 ovr] 6'5'' 233lbs (RS)Senior
          3. #80 Andrew McGuire [41 ovr] 6'7'' 240lbs Freshman
          4. #22 David Quiroga [40 ovr] 6'1'' 219lbs (RS)Junior
          #85 Neal Henry [53 ovr] 6'5'' 197lbs Freshman

          Overall - D-
Stephen McIntyre did not see too many targets last year, because of the depth at receiver. But in 2012 with an all most new receiving corps he may be the best receiver they have. Also, Trevor Walls worked hard in the off-season to solidify his number two tight end position.

          TACKLES
          1LT. #74 Davonte Wallace [72 ovr] 6'4'' 261lbs Junior
          1RT. #79 Jake Swenson [62 ovr] 6'6'' 299lbs (RS)Junior
          2LT. #71 Maveu Heimuli [53 ovr] 6'4'' 343lbs (RS)Junior
          2RT. #73 Faison McKinnis [48 ovr] 6'7'' 309lbs (RS)Freshman

          Overall - D-
Davonte Wallace is back for another year, but that doesn't help the fact the Aggies lost their right tackle. New Mexico State o-line needs to improve on their atrocious 2011 performance, keep Tanner Rust upright and let Kenny Turner get to the second level.

          GUARDS
          1LG. #75 Taylor Lenzmeier [67 ovr] 6'5'' 284lbs (RS)Sophomore
          1RG. #78 Andrew Kersten [75 ovr] 6'6'' 306lbs Senior
          2LG. #64 Luke Harris [53 ovr] 6'3'' 303lbs Freshman
          2RD. #50 Valerian Ume Ezeoke [49 ovr] 6'2'' 274lbs Sophomore

          Overall - D
Taylor Lenzmeier moved over from the tackle position to take Dejuan Yates spot, making the interior line look better than last year and hopefully perform better.

          CENTERS
          1. #63 Mike Yocius [62 ovr] 6'4'' 314lbs Senior
          2. #65 Ryan Arbelaez [59 ovr] 6'1'' 275lbs Junior

          Overall - D
Mike Yocius moved from the left guard to center to replace Mike Grady. He may not be as good as Grady, but his is the best option the Aggies had for center.

          DEFENSE
          Returning Starters - 3

          DEFENSIVE ENDS
          1LE. #13 Anthony Smith [63 ovr] 6'1'' 218lbs (RS)Senior
          1RE. #57 Gino Martinez [68 ovr] 6'2'' 236lbs (RS)Sophomore
          2LE. #97 Blake Mann [51 ovr] 6'4'' 229lbs Sophomore
          2RE. #60 Chance Roberts [53 ovr] 6'5'' 230lbs (RS)Junior

          Overall - D-
New Mexico State lost both starting ends last year, but they replace them with some decent pass rushers. Gino Martinez is a young rising star and finally has his chance to start, you may hear his name quite a bit in the years to come.

          DEFENSIVE TACKLES
          1. #51 Tommy Stuart [75 ovr] 6'3'' 317lbs Senior
          2. #91 Augafa Vaaulu [67 ovr] 6'3'' 301lbs (RS)Sophomore
          3. #93 Sean Brown [66 ovr] 6'3'' 268lbs (RS)Junior
          4. #81 Stephen Meredith [57ovr] 6'4'' 245lbs (RS)Freshman

          Overall - D+
Tommy Stuart didn't really perform well last year, but he has put some quality time in the weight room and looks to help the defense improve from the NCAA's worst. Plus, Augafa Vaaulu is another talented young man on this defensive line who will make a good duo with Gino Martinez for the next couple years.

          OUTSIDE LINEBACKERS
          1LOLB. #53 Bryan Bonilla [71 ovr] 6'1'' 219lbs (RS)Junior
          1ROLB. #36 B.J. Adolpho [80 ovr] 5'11'' 227lbs (RS)Senior

          2LOLB. #32 Dylan Davis [61 ovr] 6'0'' 232lbs Junior
          2ROLB. #45 Michael Matthews [57 ovr] 6'1'' 233lbs Senior

          Overall - D+
This is hands down the best position on the New Mexico State defense and maybe the whole team. Bryan Bonilla helped this defense be near the top of the WAC in rushing yards allowed and team captain B.J. Adolpho is back to lead the defense.

          MIDDLE LINEBACKERS
          1. #96 Niumi Lolohea [67 ovr] 5'11'' 237lbs (RS)Senior
          2. #68 Anthony Joyner [63 ovr] 6'2'' 225lbs Junior
          #56 Lee Cutler [40 ovr] 6'5'' 226lbs Freshman

          Overall - D-
The lose of Boyblue Aoelua may not hurt the defense as bad as some expect, Niumi Lolohea is a decent middle linebacker and he will be receiving a lot of help from the outside backers.

          CONERBACKS
          1. #30 Anthony Edwards [71 ovr] 6'0'' 185lbs Senior
          2. #9 Darien Johnson [71 ovr] 5'9'' 165lbs (RS)Sophomore
          3. #20 Samuel Oyenuga [61 ovr] 5'10'' 167lbs (RS)Freshman
          4. #11 Jeremy Harris [54 ovr] 6'2'' 181lbs Senior
          #39 Adam Fontaine [56 ovr] 5'11'' 174lbs Freshman

          Overall - D
The New Mexico State defense was near the bottom of the nation in pass defense and losing Coleman this year sure won't help, but Darien Johnson is another bright young talent on this defense.

          FREE SAFETIES
          1. #27 Justin Smith [70 ovr] 6'2'' 197lbs Junior
          2. #44 Jonathan Bell [63 ovr] 6'2'' 190lbs Junior

          Overall - D+
This Justin Smith needs too be more active in the secondary if the Aggies want to slow down pass happy teams like Hawai'i.

          STRONG SAFETIES
          1. #12 George Callender [68 ovr] 6'1'' 193lbs (RS)Sophomore
          2. #24 Josh Smith [58 ovr] 6'2'' 200lbs (RS)Junior
          3. #31 Davis Cazares [48 ovr] 5'11'' 183lbs (RS)Sophomore

          Overall - D-
The lose of ball hawk Ben Bradley is going to hurt this defense, but George Callender comes over from the other safety position to help out.

          SPECIAL TEAMS

          KICKER
          1. #18 Tyler Stampler [83 ovr] 5'10'' 172lbs Senior

          Overall - B-
With the offense stalling so much last year Stampler did not get too many chances to prove he is one of the best kickers in the WAC, this year may be different.

          PUNTER
          1. #42 Jake Capraro [82 ovr] 6'1'' 220lbs (RS)Sophomore

          Overall - B-
In 2011 Jake Capraro got a lot of chances to boot the ball deep down field and he showed just how big his leg was. But this year he may not be on the field as much which is a good thing.

          KICK RETURNERS
          1. #3 Kenny Turner [99 ovr] 5'10'' 192lbs Senior
          2. #4 Austin Franklin [85 ovr] 6'2'' 179lbs (RS)Freshman
          3. #30 Anthony Edwards [87 ovr] 6'0'' 185lbs Senior
          4. #28 Robert Clay [86 ovr] 5'10'' 190lbs (RS)Junior
          5. #9 Darrius Preston [85 ovr] 6'1'' 169lbs (RS)Senior

          Overall - C+
Turner and Preston did a decent job returning kicks last year, but this year the young receiver Austin Franklin was put on special teams to give them two speedy threats.

          PUNT RETURNERS
          1. #3 Kenny Turner [99 ovr] 5'10'' 192lbs Senior
          2. #4 Austin Franklin [85 ovr] 6'2'' 179lbs (RS)Freshman
          3. #30 Anthony Edwards [87 ovr] 6'0'' 185lbs Senior
          4. #28 Robert Clay [86 ovr] 5'10'' 190lbs (RS)Junior
          5. #9 Darrius Preston [85 ovr] 6'1'' 169lbs (RS)Senior

          Overall - C+
Kenny Turner did a fine job of returning punts and he is the best scoring threat on this team so why not have him out there as much as possible.

          OVERALL - C-

In 2011 the Aggies had a year they would like to forget finishing 2-10, both of those wins being conference wins. Last year New Mexico State had one of the worst defenses in division 1 college football, but they have brought back some good talent at linebacker and have some young rising stars through out the defense. Trooper Taylor had this offense firing on all cylinders last year and at times they couldn't fight their way out of a paper bag, but they got Kenny Turner back and a young passing attack that can only get better. Walker got fired at the end of last year bring in the last recruiting class in the nation, then New Mexico picked up a very prestigious coach to help shore up this team and bring in some good young talent from the surrounding area.

            WEEK 1 IN THE NCAA

            WILL IT EVER END?
Can #10 Boise State make it a decade without a loss in The Blue?

If the old adage is true, then defense should lead #1 Sooners to a title.

            BETWEEN THE TRENCHES
Look for the #9 Crimson Tide to pound their way to a championship in 2012.

I really enjoyed your Michigan State dynasty and this one seems like it's going to be just as good, I really love how realistic it is. Hopefully you can improve from 2-10 and maybe end up around the .500 mark, you're team looks improved from last year. Also, it was pretty nice seeing Michigan State go 12-2 and end up ranked #3. Go Spartans!

Arkon comes into Las Cruces to face a much improved New Mexico State team. The Aggies lost some key players from their pass game and on their offensive line it should be interesting to see how they will fill these holes.

                          K. Turner(#3) celebrates after taking a hand off up the middle for 63 yards. Turner was named player of the game with 22 carries for 106 yards and a touchdown.

                          A. Franklin(#4) catches a pass over the middle and uses his speed to make it a 57 yard touchdown pass. New quarterback, Tanner Rust, and the passing game had a decent day with over 200 yards through the air and two touchdowns.

                          B. Adolpho(#36) gets in the backfield to get back up quarterback, P. Nicely, destroying any hopes of the Zips coming back. New Mexico State's defense played well in the first 3 quarters, but would allow 17 points in the fourth.

                              Game Notes
The Aggies head to El Paso, after a solid 31-24 win over Akron, to face UTEP in the Battle of I-10. The Aggies have improved in every facet since the last two played each other, but the Aggies are without two of their best players on defense so it may be up to their offense to keep scoring points if the Miners can expose these holes in the defense.

The Battle of I-10 is a rivalry between The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) and New Mexico State University (NMSU). It is called the Battle of I-10 because the two universities are located along Interstate-10 connecting El Paso and Las Cruces.
