Re: Rebuilding the Fear - Oakland Raiders M13 CCM

Offense Holds Steady Until Defense Can Clamp Down
Saints Push Raiders in First Half, But Wilt Under
    Physical Attack. Raiders Win 34-20.

The Raiders were initially thrown off guard by the Saints ground attack. Ahmad Bradshaw returned from his injury and was running through the Raiders defense without problem. He had racked up over 100 yards in the first half alone.

But all did not go well for Bradshaw in that first half. He got crushed by Bobby Wagner flying through a lane and gave up the ball. Maeweather was there to fall on it to create the turnover.

Martens led the ensuing drive down the shortened field and finished it with an 8-yard pass to Moore for the touchdown.

Andy Dalton fired back with a deep pass to WR Clifton Faulk, who beat Smoke by a step for a 63-yard completion. That set up a run a couple plays later by Danny Woodhead for the touchdown, using a few nifty moves to get around Olsen and beating Branch to the pylon for the score. That gave the Saints a 17-10 lead in the second quarter. Earlier in the drive, Bradshaw's day came to an end as Davarius Bullock tracked him down from behind. Bradshaw landed very roughly on his wrist, and he was taking out of the game.

Martens continued to make his throws, picking up chunks of yards to Moore and Green. This time, it was Karl Kruger who was the recipient of the touchdown pass after the Saints were looking like they would hold as they stopped Caulder cold on two attempts. The touchdown got the Raiders even again at 17-17.

The Saints picked up a field goal before the half ended, taking a 20-17 lead into the locker room.

The Raiders received the ball first in the second half, but went 3-and-out on their possession. Darnell Dockett was getting into a groove with his pass rush, making life difficult.

The Saints didn't manage anything with their possession as it looked like both defenses made some adjustments at halftime.

Martens' arm got a little bit of a rest after throwing 31 first half passes as the Raiders turned to the ground game to try to get it going. Caulder struggled in the first half, but Spiller had a little more success. Caulder got the call first and found a little room, but helped keep the drive going. He and Spiller tried to lean on the Saints defense, while Martens set up play action off the runs.

Finally, later in the quarter, the combination of a fresher defense and the running got the Raiders in position to score. Spiller's number was called in another situation inside the opponent's 5 yard line. Spiller found some room and punched it into the end zone. This gave the Raiders at 24-20 lead.

Run game closed down, Dalton returned to the air. The Raiders tried to bring pressure, but it wasn't getting to the QB for much of the game. This time, Wagner was closing in, and Dalton fired the ball downfield. Tyvon Branch snatched the wild pass. The Raiders couldn't turn the possession into points, however.

Next Saints possession, Dalton came out throwing again. He was having success this time with Jimmy Graham being a match up problem. The veteran tight end nearly picked up 100 yards on the day on 9 receptions. However, the coverage held up on the next play as Dalton tried to go to Clifton Faulk deep. Patrick Peterson undercut the route and picked off the pass.

This time, the Raiders were able to capitalize. Caulder started pounding and finding more room and bigger runs. He never broke one, but he wore down the defense. Martens found his third touchdown pass, hitting Akia Green underneath and the receiver pushed his way across the endzone. This put the Raiders up 31-20. The team would add a FG after some more Caulder runs on the next possession.

With under 2 minutes left, the Saints had to take chances. Dalton couldn't find a way to try to make a miracle happen, and Raiders kneeled on the ball to end the game.

The pass coverage was significantly better in the second half. After the first half, Dalton had hit 78% of his passes. He finished the game with 56% completion percentage. It was mostly the coverage as Branch got the lone Raiders sack in the game. Not much else was getting through the Saints' protection scheme all day.

"It's good to know that we do stand a chance against a solid passing team without having to get constant pressure, " Branch spoke, "We figured out the route combinations they were running and us DBs got together to work out how we wanted to handle it, and it worked out pretty well."

In fact, the blitzing was doing more harm than good in this one, leaving gaps in pass and run coverage. Meanwhile, the Raiders protection held up well, aside from Darnell Dockett picking up 3 sacks. Even then, they were to a degree coverage sacks where Martens didn't want to force a pass. While he took those sacks, he avoided interceptions.

The Raiders head into their bye with a 2-game win streak and back over .500 at 4-3.

      Week 8 - Midweek News

      No NCAA Football News

      NFL News:

Rams expect HB Darren McFadden to play this week after recovering from his injury.

Saints expect to lose HB Ahmad Bradshaw for a few weeks.

Jets get ace QB Terry Carter back this week after being cleared to play.

Tony Romo has 343 TD passes, good enough for 8th all-time.

Matt Forte continues his climb up the all-time rushing leaders chart. He is now 8th all-time in rushing yards.

The Bengals remain undefeated at 7-0.

      Raiders News

The trading deadline will arrive after the bye week, and analysts are wondering if the Raiders will make any moves to shore up the offensive line.

"They need a true right tackle in my opinion. Freese as a natural left tackle. I don't know what matches might be out there, but something needs to be done, " one sports show analyst commented.

Another interesting case can be made for trying to find a running back on-the-cheap to fill out the depth chart. Of all things, a young fullback has also been mentioned by some sports talking heads as something the Raiders need to pursue.

In any case, the Raiders find themselves still in third place as the Broncos and Chiefs also won.

Raiders' Next Game: None. Bye Week.

      Raiders Injury Report
      PosPlayerInjury Note
WRBryan MillsOut 2 weeks (abdominal tear)
QB Kip RickettsOut 3 weeks (dislocated knee)

Walters and Griggs were practice participants and should be ready to go come week 9.

      Roster News:

The Raiders were spotted in practice using a 4-man front throughout. Some speculate that this is an attempt to get Keithen Lett on the field, a speedy pass rusher in the vein of Dwight Freeney, on the field.

Tevin Ash is rumored to be moving to the left end slot to be the Mathis-type rusher.

This leaves Keiwone Walters out, and the team might be making this sort of move in response to the contract number that Walters has thrown around. He could be on the way out - either sooner at the deadline or later during the offseason. Walters has been something of a disappointment - and often injured - during his time in Oakland.

This also will leave Jake Olsen without a permanent spot as Bullock will start at LOLB and Wagner moves to ROLB. Olsen will likely come in during some pass defenses as he is, by far, the best cover linebacker and is not terrible if called upon to blitz, something all of the linebackers will still be doing.

"Basically, same philosophy, different front - all in hopes of increasing pressure on the QB, " one reporter commented.

Further fueling the trade rumors is that the Raiders would have a match in RT Johnathan Lewis from the Steelers, and the Steelers could use Walters as he would be an improvement over the existing REs on the its roster.

Lewis is a run blocking RT, something that seems somewhat uncommon in the league right now. He has solid acceleration and is a tall kid, standing 6' 7". Despite that size, not very strong, so that might tamp down interest. No reports of interest from either the Steelers or Raiders. Though anonymous sources say talks entered the initial stages.

      Scouting News:

S.D. State product DT Manny Smith caught some attention from scouts after showing a good burst off the line in his last game. He seems to have a pretty good knack for timing out the QB's cadence. He also seems to show good effort when engaged, making him more difficult to block. He's pegged as a late-1st prospect.

Marshall DT Charles Wade plays up to his size very well, but he either doesn't know how to get off blocks or doesn't show much fight in general. He hits relatively hard and is a pretty sure tackler, but if you can't fight in the trenches, it's going to be a question mark how effective he could be at the next level. The consensus draft grade of a late-3rd speaks to this.

DT Collin Moore, from Hawaii, looks like a potential solid prospect. He has a good head for the game and is able to diagnose blocking schemes relatively quickly and accurately. He has good size and plays with leverage. He hand-fights well when engaged, helping him disengage quickly. Could also be a good bull rusher up the middle, but needs a lot of work on his footwork and burst off the snap. Considered a 4th round prospect.

Raiders and Cardinals Complete Deadline Deal

The Cardinals were a surprise partner for the Raiders, but a sensible one. The Cardinals needed a RE, but held out for a high draft pick in return to take the potential FA off the Raiders' hands. They also got WR Fabian Favors, whom many team scouts consider a prospect languishing on the Raiders depth chart.

The Raiders picked up a RT and a prospect HB in this swap of youth and picks across both teams. Here's the overall deal:

        Raiders trade:
        RE Keiwone Walters
        RT T. Kropog
        WR Fabian Favors
        2019 1st round pick
        2019 2nd round pick

        Cardinals trade:
        RT D. Robinson
        LB James Hazzard
        HB V. Mattinson
        2019 5th round pick

The biggest piece went to the Cardinals in both the 1st rounder and Walters, especially if they can get him signed. The Raiders pick up a couple young prospects with potential, but not ready to play now in any every down role. Hazzard is a extremely hard hitter, but that's about all he can do at this point. Could make for a "hazardous" special teams contributor. Mattinson is a very raw halfback that shows signs of power and elusiveness in a combined package, but has a long way to go before he can be considered trustworthy.

Robinson is the only one would can (and will) step in to play immediately. Otto Freese will be on the bench ready to come in, but also get some time to learn and adjust to the NFL in general.

Favors is the interesting piece in the deal. He has good qualities, but never really got the chance to show them. Other players of this nature moved on from the Raiders to blossom either in skills or production - or both (Quinterrius Fields, Tanner Bailey, Paris Cooper, who suddenly likes man coverage evidently, D'Andre Ware...to name a few). It will be interesting to see how Favors looks with the Cardinals in a couple years.

          Week 9 - Midweek News

          NFL News:

          Pro Bowl voting has begun.

Bengals, the last undefeated team, fell last week to the Ravens 38-24 as Flacco showed up with a big day, throwing for 5 TDs and 393 yards.

Flacco was outdone by Robb Bell, who threw for 451 yards to go with his 5 TDs.

The Cardinals front office if getting much praise for it's acquisition of Keiwone Walters. He will play this week as a starter after taking last week to learn the Cardinals playbook.

          Raiders News

Big game for the Raiders this week. Rolling into town are the Denver Broncos, who won again to rise to 6-1. This can be a chance for the Raiders to pull themselves up by their own hands...or suffer a serious set back and fall back to .500 and 3 games out to start the second half of the season.

Walters and his contract distraction is gone and the team has already aligned the defense without him. That defense will be tested, but the defense has been pushed in most games. However, if there's a time for the pass rush to work, it's now with Josh Freeman on the docket.

Raiders' Next Game: Broncos (6-1) @ Raiders (4-3)

No change to the injury report with the bye week.

          Roster News:

New arrival Darian Robinson is the starter at RT. The team will see if this young man can stabilize the position. His first test will be against Von Miller and company. Welcome to the AFL...er...the AFC West.

Bull Griggs will be the starter with somehow Spiller and Caulder splitting the rest of the time. Perhaps a three-pronged attack on the ground is possible. Of course, this has been said before and Griggs ended up with the carries anyway. However, the load does need to be lightened on Griggs, being the physical runner that he is.

Spiller will remain the returner after a solid showing, especially on punt returns, averaging 12 yards per return, a good result.

          Contract News:

C Sergei Wainwright reportedly rejected an offer for an extension. The number of years might be the sticking point. Wainwright wants 4 years, according to his agent, and the team offered 3 years. Perhaps the real issue is Patrick Seaver's arrival.

          Notable Progression:

          LB Davarius Bullock
          STR: 81 to 83

          LG Cale Welch
          IBL: 92 to 93

          LB Bobby Wagner
          MCV: 62 to 64

          C Patrick Seaver
          STA: 67 to 74

          QB Danny Martens
          MAC: 84 to 85

          WR Akia Green
          BCV: 69 to 70
          RTE: 82 to 83

          LB Tevin Ash
          PRC: 85 to 86

          TE Karl Kruger
          IBL: 66 to 68

          LB Kendle Maeweather
          ZCV: 56 to 57

Jeez.....cant believe you traded away your FIRST and SECOND round draft picks. Hope those guys you acquired are under long term contracts because if not, you're basically giving up high draft picks for stopgap players. Either way, hope it works out for you.

On a related note - how did you trade three players and two draft picks in the same trade? I thought the limit of trading/acquiring players/draft picks were three max for each team for a total of six? Thanks.

They are all under cheap contracts so keeping them should be no problem. All are young as well. They aren't just stop gap, at least not by plan. Freese can play LT once Veldheer goes when his contract is up, leaving the acquisition to have RT (and there are NO good RT in this draft, imo, so basically I'm "drafting" a RT with this trade). Plus, I had four 1st round picks and this draft that seems meh for my needs. So I still have picks to trade down. Also still have a second to use.

The HB has high ELU and TRK with 90 SPD and 72 STR - if I can get his BCV/AWR up, he could be a starter. Hazzard has 99 POW and 80s TAK/AWR - some development and he's a potential starter quality LB.

Not gonna pretend it was cheap, but I don't think it was a bad overpay.

As far as the trade - it's two separate trades...I just wrote it up as one trade instead of listing it is two trades...

Oh, okay.....you're letting Veldheer leave so that explains it better. Even after letting him leave, you still have your starting left and right tackles. Looking at it this way, now the trade doesnt sound as bad. In fact, not bad at all and it makes sense.

Two separate trades...okay. I thought I was missing something or just not paying attention when trading.

Hope the trades work out for your team.

                  Heartbreaker in Oakland
                  Freeman Stands Strong Amidst Onslaught.
                  Broncos Rally for 22-21 Win.

Josh Freeman just showed his toughness and leadership in this game. The Raiders went all out against him all game long, piling up hits and sacks. Through it all, however, he continued to make throws, and one horrendus play by Patrick Peterson was the difference in the game.

The game started off with the defenses in control. Nothing but a Broncos field goal in the first quarter.

Then the Raiders got some offense going. Martens found Akia Green for a touchdown to give the Raiders a 7-3 lead. The running game was getting going next, with Griggs finishing a drive for another touchdown. The Broncos put up a field goal before half to make it 14-6, Raiders.

The third quarter was back to the defenses. Neither team could maintain any momentum on offense, trading three-and-outs or very short drives all quarter.

The Raiders looked like they would break it open after a balanced drive ended with Moore finding a window behind the zone down close to the goal line. Martens rolled out and the zone defenders watched him, and Moore sneaked behind them. Martens saw the window and threw the ball anticipating Moore being there, and he was for the touchdown. That made the score 21-6.

Freeman refused to quit. He stood up to the hits he was making and started firing the ball down field. The Broncos drive got started with a perfect throw just past Seawood outstretched hand. Another throw to Torrey Smith got the Broncos in field goal range. The defense did hold and the Broncos settled for a short field goal.

The Raiders looked to take time off the clock, but couldn't get into scoring range.

The Broncos next possession saw Freeman continue his aggression down the field. Maeweather got in for a sack and was making tackles all over the field, but the Broncos were continuing to march. Heyward-Bey broke open and made a play to give the Broncos a touchdown and make the score 21-16.

With under a minute left, the Broncos went into the hurry up. The Raiders went with heavy blitzing, hoping to get one more pressure or perhaps a hurried throw to a defender.

Instead, something happened to Patrick Peterson. He simply just flopped on the ground or perhaps fell down. Whatever happened, it left Torrey Smith wide open with nothing but daylight in front of him. No one could catch him and the Broncos took the lead with less than 20 seconds left.

The Raiders denied the 2-point conversion, and the Broncos squib kickoff. If the Raiders could find a play, perhaps they could get into field goal range, even with just 10 seconds left.

Martens had Kruger open on one play and made a nice throw, but Chris Harris made an exceptional play to tip the ball away. After that, the Raiders couldn't get anything and the game went to the Broncos.

The losses wasted a gutsy effort by Bull Griggs, who racked up 110 yards. In fact, the ground attack picked up 190 yards. Martens was up and down all day, and the receivers weren't much better. They had a hard time finding openings against the Broncos defense. Martens threw 2 TDs but also 2 INTs, completing just 50% of his passes.

Maeweather was everywhere, trying to keep the defense together. He racked up 15 tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble. He also got called for a very questionable roughing the passer.

"He hit the QB low and you can't do that any more, " an official was heard trying to explain to a livid coach Lyle.

Perhaps technically, but even Freeman didn't seem to feel it. He didn't flinch or move at all.

The loss is not only heartbreaking, but damaging to the team's hopes of getting back in the race. Now at 4-4, the Raiders need to get something going.

                    Week 10 - Midweek News

                    No NCAA Football News

                    NFL News:

Jets WR Braylon Edwards picked up 165 yards last week.

Dolphins HB Chris Johnson ran for two TDs in a 48-20 win over the Bengals.

Steelers QB Ben Rothlisberger nearly had a perfect passer rating against the Titans last week.

                    Raiders News

The Raiders will have to find a way to put the loss behind them while the coaches figure out what has happened to the pass coverage. The pass rush seems to be liking the new arrangement, racking up 5 sacks and frequents hits on the QB. There's something going on with the DBs that's causing an issue.

The Chiefs also won (currently on a 5-game win streak) so the gap between the Raiders and 2nd place also widened.

On the bright side, Tevin Ash won AFC Defensive Player of the Week for his 3 sacks.

                    Raiders Injury Report
                    PosPlayerInjury Note
QB Kip RickettsOut 1 week (dislocated knee)

WR Bryan Mills was cleared to play this week, leaving only Kip Ricketts on the trainer's table.

                    Roster News:

The shift to a 4-man front seems to have activated Tevin Ash. Maeweather is showing he can handle the middle of the field, and everywhere else. This leaves getting Bobby Wagner and Davarius Bullock going - but perhaps Maeweather is just gobbling up everything, making their production look a little worse.

Lyle had a meeting with the DBs and then the DBs themselves had a "position only" meeting to try to figure out why QBs are carving up the secondary this year. Coaches are at a loss as well. One possible theory is that the DBs are just giving up mostly shorter passes, which has been true. Shorter passes are higher percentage. Peterson, aside from that one play, and Smoke did contain Bey and Smith pretty well last week, allowing just 5 catches between the two of them.

Perhaps the issue is Brandon Madison as nickle back. He may not be comfortable in that role and dealing with the slot receiver.

                    Contract News:

C Sergei Wainwright officially rejected the Raiders tender offer. No word on if talks would continue during the season or if Wainwright will test the free agent market.

                    Notable Progression:

                    LB Kendle Maeweather
                    MCV: 64 to 65
                    AWR: 82 to 83

                    FS Lamel Seawood
                    MCV: 64 to 67

                    LB Tevin Ash
                    POW: 86 to 87

                    CB Patrick Peterson
                    AWR: 87 to 88

                    RE Keithen Lett
                    BSH: 67 to 68

                    Scouting News:

Jibreel Lawson, DT out of Rutgers, looks like a solid player, especially given where he's projected to go (6th round). He does struggle getting off blocks, but he also shows reasonable strength, good power rush technique, and solid acceleration and explosiveness on the snap.

The team took a look at CB Mark Fightmaster from Idaho. He's got the athletic ability to play the position, but his technique is questionable and the injury doesn't help his case any, especially if a team wanted to take a chance on him in the second round.

Shyquawn Johnson (Illinois) isn't a strong safety, but he might be good enough for the team to try to groom for the position or move Seawood to SS. Shyquawn looks impressive on tape, showing great quickness and range and shows a comfort level working in space in coverage. He hits like a ton of bricks as well and has a decent amount of field awareness, but it needs work. Still, the team will have this kid on its board for sure.

Tell me about it - team hasn't been this snake bit a long time.

Who would have thought the coverage would struggle adding J.J. Smoke to Madison and Peterson?

Hopefully, it was just a slow first half.

Well - Nantz and Simms have pretty much written the Raiders off indirectly - saying that "both teams are playing for next year".

Sign...? Or will we make him eat those words?

                            Defense Overcomes Offensive Struggles
Pass Defense Rises Up and Then Holds Late.
Raiders Hold on for 26-20 Win.

The occasional terrible game struck again for Martens, who threw 3 INTs in the game without a TD. In two games, he has 3 TDs and 7 INTs. In the rest, he has 13 TDs and 5 INTs. The Falcons seemed to focus on the pass as well, which did allow Bull Griggs to have a very solid game.

The pass defense game up big, especially in the first half. Davarius Bullock isn't racking up the sacks this year, but he grabbed his first pick-six of his career. That was the first points of the game.

Keithen Lett then contributed with 2 sacks off the right end spot, showing flashes of that quick speed rush style. Both he and Ash came after the QB, and the pressure made him flustered for much of the game. J.J. Smoke finally got another interception as well.

The Raiders were up 20-0 after the first half. But Martens' inability to get anything consistent going in the passing game hampered efforts to tack on points. Ramonn Majors has disappeared and Karl Kruger suffered a major injury. That left Martens with just Moore and Green. Both racked up over 100 yards and Martens had nearly 300 on the game, but with no one else to really take pressure off, after a while, drives stalled.

Meanwhile, the Falcons were starting to get things going against the defense. Also focused on the pass, given the situation, the Falcons used draw plays to move the ball. Patrick Peterson also made another aggressive mistake, allowing Julio Jones to get by for a TD.

Later, Falcons QB Lejon Jackson would find HB Mark Wood in the end zone. This made the game 26-20. The Raiders were able to take time off the clock, picking up some first downs, but missing a few big plays that could have put the game out of reach. Still, they bled out the timeouts from the Falcons.

The final possession for the Falcons ended with the pass defense coming up again. Tyvon Branch picked off a pass intended for Julio Jones. The Raiders held on for the win upon securing the 3rd INT of the game.

It was an ugly day for both QBs. Both threw 3 INTs and had terrible passer ratings.

"This is not a pretty win, but at this point, I'll take what we can get. It's ugly for sure and we still have a lot to work on, " Lyle spoke.

Theories abound as to why the passing game has struggled to find consistency.

"When he's bad, he's terrible, but otherwise, he's that same leader we saw last year. We just need to get that guy to show up more often, " a sports talk host said of Martens, "Perhaps it's the sophomore slump. Bull Griggs isn't running over people like he was last year either. Akia Green is the only rookie really having a good second year."

                              NFL News:

Saints have HB Ahmad Bradshaw back healthy and ready to play.

Redskins will have to do without HB Marshawn Lynch for a few weeks.

QB Robb Bell has thrown for 20,000 yards in his career.

                              Raiders News

The Broncos continue to win, now up to 8-1 on the season. However, the Chiefs lost, allowing the Raiders to close to within a game of 2nd place. At 5-4, the Raiders are in the middle of a logjam of 5-4 and 6-3 teams in the AFC. Hopefully, the win last week, ugly as it was, will get the team going in the right direction again.

The Raiders will have a chance at payback for the tough loss handed out by the Broncos this week and another chance to strike at the division leaders directly. They'll have to do it on Denver's home turf, however.

Raiders' Next Game: Raiders (5-4) @ Broncos (8-1)

QB Kip Ricketts returns but the team loses TE Karl Kruger. With all the QBs healthy, the team can let Josh Johnson go for depth at TE. Kruger will not be placed on IR, however, as the team could have him back should they reach the playoffs.

                              Roster News:

                              QB Josh Johnson was released.
                              TE Dwayne Allen was signed.

Allen will start at TE this week. He's been with Oakland before and proved to be relatively reliable.

Justin Blackmon returns to the slot WR spot as Majors has struggled tremendously recently.

This is the Danny Martens fans are hoping to see. The young QB who doesn't make mistakes and any INTs are the result of great plays and not errant passes.

It helps when you're in rhythm with Denarius Moore, and a hot Denarius Moore at that. Placed in the #2 spot to try to create favorable matchups, Moore made that strategy a success this week. He was the recipient of all three Martens TD passes, picking up 6 catches and 106 yards in the process.

Akia Green was more the possession receiver in this one, and he did well. Green garnered 78 yards on the day. Adding in the offense was Bull Griggs having one of his more dominant performances. He got just 16 carries, but ran off 122 yards.

Once again, the pass rush pounded on Freeman. Kendle Maeweather picked up two sacks while Bullock got a sack as did Suh and Lorenzo Hopkins on a dime blitz. This doesn't include the hits and pressures, one of which lead to Patrick Peterson picking off a pass and taking it back for six.

Maeweather is on pace for 188 tackles as a rookie. Reaching 200 tackles isn't totally out of the question, though he would have to average 14 tackles over the next 6 games to do so. He picked up 13 in this week's game, so, while very difficult, it isn't completely impossible. Maeweather also leads the team in sacks with 6, one more than Tevin Ash.

The pass coverage stepped up for the second consecutive week. Freeman picked up 260 yards, but was stopped from throwing a TD pass and threw the INT to Peterson. He completed just 56% of his passes as well.

The run defense contained Reggie Bush solidly. Bush picked up 4.1 yards per carry and a touchdown. But with the Broncos playing from behind, Bush was minimized in the run game.

The win gets to Raiders to 6-4 and now just 2 behind the Broncos. With six games left to play, the team still has its work cut out for it, and they can't let down now that they are on starting to build a winning streak.
