Re: Rebuilding the Fear - Oakland Raiders M13 CCM
Week 12 - Midweek News
NCAA Football News:
Alabama HB Marvin Krunch has been benched for his poor play as of late, making his hot start seem like a distant memory. Some wonder if the young man is hiding an injury of some sort.
NFL News:
Patroits HB Ben Tate has healed and is ready to play.
Thanksgiving has arrived, and the Raiders and Browns are one of the games on the schedule this Thanksgiving Day.
Erik Lorig signed an extension with the Texans for 3 years worth $3.9 M
Bucs wide out Brandon LaFell scored two touchdowns last week.
Raiders News
The Raiders picked up another big win in their quest to get back into playoff positioning. The win coming against the Broncos made it even more sweet. The Chiefs are also happy about the Broncos losing as it brings them back to the pack.
The Raiders will play on Thanksgiving, facing a Browns team that has fallen far from being the team that was one way away from receiving the Lombardi Trophy.
AFC West Standings:
Broncos: 8-2
Chiefs: 7-3
Raiders: 6-4
Chargers: 4-6
Raiders' Next Game: Browns (4-6) @ Raiders (6-4)
Raiders Injury Report Pos Player Injury Note TE Karl Kruger Out 6 weeks (broken collarbone)
Raiders continue to keep Kruger on the roster. The team is eyeballing a possible return on the first round of the playoffs.
Roster News:
Lyle is making a surprise move, giving Max Justice the start at LG over Aaryn DePriest.
"We're going to have Aaryn checked out, " the Raiders head coach said, "He's been struggling more than we are used to and have to wonder if something isn't bothering him either on or off the field."
Otto Freese seems to be progressing well with his depression treatments. His therapist remarked at a significant improvement in Freese's demeanor and outlook on life. Perhaps it will translate to the football field soon.

Scouting News:
Rice WR Mitchell Osbourne initially attracted attention with his speed on tape, but then scouts saw that he was terrible at running routes. With no skill for being a returner, the team quickly moved on from him.
FIU wide out Andrew Jenkins also attracted scouts. He has very strong explosiveness and seems to have top-range speed. Scouts also love his size, 6' 5", 245 lbs. He uses that big frame to go up for catches and his strong lower body gives him good jumping ability. Scouts are concerned about his route running and even more concerned with his frequent lack of focus and inability to run after the catch, despite his explosiveness. Still, the team has him on the list for further evaluation.
VT strong safety Cleon Smith got a long look from scouts this week, and they are still mystified by what kind of player he is or could become. Athletically, he's a mixed bag of speed and explosiveness combined with slow feet and weak raw power but an excellent jumping ability. Mentally, he stays focused in most cases but has only average anticipation. He doesn't tackle well at all and doesn't hit with a lot of power. That would indicate he's more of a cover safety, but his coverage isn't very well developed. Scouts are unsure if he's something of a "blank canvas" or just a track star/workout warrior.
Wingate HB Tobias Bray shows a lot of natural ability as a kick returner. The team would like someone that can be a specialist in the return game, and perhaps Bray could be a prospect along those lines. Not highly touted by any means - making him perhaps a no-risk type of pick."Some people call it butterflies, but to him, it probably feels like pterodactyls in his stomach." --Plesac in MLB18Comment

Re: Rebuilding the Fear - Oakland Raiders M13 CCM
Meaweather, Defense Come Alive
Another 4 INTs From Martens Does Little
Harm as Browns Can't Make Headway. Raiders Win 27-16.
Somebody made Maeweather mad. He came out fired up and ready to hit people. He chased down anyone with the ball and brought them to the ground with ferocity.
He picked up a sack, injured two players and racked up 16 tackles, his best thus far. He's already reached his 125 tackles goal and there's 5 more games to play. The sack came on third down to get a tiring defense off the field in one of the few drives the Browns mustered.
"It's official. The Raiders defense is otherworldly. Fear them." That was what Mike Hill tweeted right after the game.
Meanwhile, on the offensive side of the ball, there wasn't much good happening other than a few big plays. Martens hit Moore on a deep post pattern and then had to leave the game later with an injury, which clearly messed with Martens' head.
He then turned to Akia Green, and he was out for much of the game before returning in the 4th quarter. Left with Majors, Blackmon, and Mills - Martens had no chance. Clearly, the Raiders still need to work on their receiver corps. Dwayne Allen picked up a TD pass and Green did get one as well when he came back in.
Other than that, the Browns' talented linebackers made intermediate routes difficult at best. Deep routes were shut down by Joe Haden for the most part, short routes are not in Martens' comfort zone and the pass rush hurt the rest of the passing attack. Somehow, Martens did salvage a decent day, aside from the INTs.
Still, some wonder if the boom-or-bust style of Martens is sustainable. Some think he doesn't understand when to back off and slow the game down. Others think he's just too much of a gunslinger and not enough of a field general.
"That's what they said about Brett Favre wasn't it? He did alright, " one analyst spoke on a radio show.
"Maybe he needs his eyes to be bulbous or whatever it was about that. He might be half blind, " a shock talk show host tweeted.
Either his rookie season was a fluke or he hasn't made the counter-adjustment to the adjustments defenses likely made after seeing the kid last year.
Bull Griggs was also getting frustrated until his physical style finally slowed down the Browns front seven. Then the holes opened and Griggs broke off some big runs. He also scored a TD, jamming the ball across from about a yard out.
Vincent Mattison got some decent playing time and looked pretty solid. The good audition might get him worked into the offense more. Caulder continues to have his up-and-down days and Spiller might be the team's return specialist - that could open up Mattison for #2 HB.
Lyle also fired up the ground game by going for it on 4th and inches early in the game. That success (by Caulder, still the best on the team at just lowering his head and thundering forward) sparked the whole offensive line it seems. At least in the run game.
Defensively, it was almost all Maeweather. The Raiders recorded 49 tackles according to the official score sheet. Maeweather's 16 equaled 33% of those tackles. He also recorded 16 of the 23 tackles made by the starting linebackers.
"I'm just doing my job. They put me in the middle of the field and say 'go hit something' and that's what I do. Find the ball, hit the guy with it. Pretty simple, " Maeweather spoke about his big day.
Doing his job, indeed. Maeweather found the ball carrier
and hit him pretty hard.
The pass rush was the only thing that could outshine the rookie's outing. They racked up six sacks. Keithen Lett picked up 2 sacks as did fellow end Tevin Ash (who left with an injury and did not return). Julian Shade came in for Ash, and picked up sack #6.
The win puts the Raiders at 7-4 and the team is on a three-game winning streak. While Martens is likely causing debates in living rooms, sports bar and sports media, Lyle is not apt to make a major change right when his team is starting to roll.

4-3 for now. He can do it in the 3-4 too. Earlier was running hybrid and 8-9 tackles was basically a bad day for him.

NFL News:
Giants' Jason Pierre-Paul will miss some games with a broken hand.
Patriots CB Fred Marshall had two punt returns for touchdowns last week in his team's win 38-27 over the Seahawks.
HBs Arian Foster and Alfred Morris broke the 1,000-yard mark last week.
HB Maurice Jones-Drew is making noise for potentially closing in on Emmitt Smith's rushing record.
Raiders News
The Raiders continue to play more like the way most expected them to play, especially on the defensive side of the ball. The three-game win streak has the team at 7-4...still in third place in the AFC West. However, the rest of the AFC looks pretty week so far, so the Raiders might still be in playoff shape and are definitely back in the race at the very least.
This week presents another opportunity for the Raiders make headway directly against a division rival as the Chiefs are next up.

Yep. Luckily the rest of the AFC seems weak this year...but there's another division (AFC East I believe) that has a 7-4 team and 3 6-5 teams...so if Raiders falter and/or those teams get hot...might still be in trouble.

Re: Rebuilding the Fear - Oakland Raiders M13 CCM
Physically Dominating Defense
Defense Obliterates Chiefs Offense and Offense
Takes Advantage. Raiders Roll 41-10.
If this is how the defense can keep playing down the stretch, maybe the fans have nothing to worry about. The defense seems to be getting better with each passing week, a scary prospect for the opposing offenses.
The sacks are starting to return and the takeaways are as well. The team picked up 6 more sacks this week, once again spread across the board. Julian Shade led with 2 sacks and four players (Suh, Maeweather, Madison, Bullock) picked up a sack each.
In addition to the sacks were plenty of hard hits. Forced fumbles were the order of the day once Maeweather put Jamaal Charles AND Larod Stephens-Howling out of commission early. T.J. Morant had to come in, and he ran very tentative all day. All told, Morant coughed up the ball three times. Overall, the Chiefs fumbled five times, but were able to recover 3 of them.
The pass coverage also have improved tremendously. Blane Giles found that out, completing under 40% of his passes. He also threw three interceptions.
Maeweather picked up one of those and eyed his third defensive touchdown, but Giles caught him from behind. Three players later, Martens found Akia Green for a TD.
Bullock took care of business himself. He picked off a pass, which was the only mark he made on the score sheet at the time, and took it the distance for a touchdown.
The other interception came earlier in the game on the hands of Patrick Peterson. This one, however, was deep in Raiders territory, so the drive didn't produce any points.
While the score was one-sided, the Chiefs didn't roll over defensively. They were placed in constant bad position, but were doling out the hits as well. Vincent Matthinson's day was done early after getting crushed by Eric Berry. Tamba Hali blew up Akia Green and knocked him out of the game for a bit.
Martens was harassed all day by the pass rush, suffering 4 sacks and one rushed throw turned into an interception, his 18th. He completed exactly 50% of his passes for just 161 yards.
Not to be out done, the Raiders running backs gave some punishment. Julio Caulder ran over Brandon Flowers, putting the cornerback out for a bit. Caulder also had a bruising 11-yard run in the 4th where he withstood a hit from Berry and tumbled forward through contact from Houston.
"That's good ol' Caulder. Griggs is more the power guy with a little finesse to him. Caulder is a point-and-shoot guy. Give him the rock and fire him like a cannon ball, " Marcel Reece, the often overlooked lead blocker, commented.
While the physical win is how the Raiders want to win, it may take the toll on some bodies. Three players were taken out of the game due to injury. Matthinson, Seawood, who was injured forcing one of those three Morant fumbles, and Keithen Lett suffered an injury tag-teaming with Wagner on a scramble by Giles.
The win is the Raiders' fourth in a row and pushes the team to 8-4.

Young Vincent Matthinson's outing that was supposed to be a reward turned out to end his season as the team put him on injured reserve. Seawood's injury could be problematic, given the "prospects" at safety. Seawood has issues - and he's the best at the position. Lett's injury is minor in terms of weeks (surprising he'll recover that fast) and the depth impact shouldn't be too large.
Roster News:
Transactions:
HB Vincent Matthinson placed on IR.

FS Matt Giordano was signed.
Giordano starts at free safety this week. James Hazzard will take the duties of the released McIntosh (mostly special teams). Caulder will be the #2 behind Griggs this week. Julian Shade will start at left end for Lett.
Overall, the injuries shuffle things around some, but the biggest concern will be free safety. The defense might have to play a little safer this week in light of Seawood's injury.

Scouting News:
HB Aerion Boudreaux (Michigan) looked solid on first glance and the scouts took a closer look at him this week. The biggest concern is how well he will develop his technique and mental abilities. Using deception to evade tacklers and minimize the ferocity of hits he takes is something he'll need to work on, especially for being more of a speed back.
Florida HB DeRay Ray might not be as injury prone as reported. Scouts reviews Ray's actual medical history and learned that he's had some major injuries, but he's not exactly made of glass. This improved the team's view of him, given his athletic talent and aptitude for returning kicks.
WR DeVontry Wilson (Florida State) saw his stock fall with the team as further examination of his tape revealed a very lax protection of the ball as he's running in the open field. Given how NFL secondaries tend to want to be physical after the catch with receivers, this could be a big problem.
WR Sam Jackson from Ohio State is catching attention from Raiders scouts. Jackson shows quick feet and blazing top-end speed. He's also capable of getting off the line against press coverage and runs reasonably good routes, good enough to work at the next level. Hands could use some refinement, but overall, he looks like one that will be on the Raiders draft board come April.
TCU WR Devin Thompson is sparking some debate among scouts. They all agree on his overall player type: small, quick and fast. His speed shows on tape and he's explosive. He also shows natural aptitude for the return game. So what's the debate? His size. He's only 187 lbs, and he doesn't "play bigger than he is" given his difficulties with fumbles and simply staying on the field after taking a big hit. He is also not a natural hands catcher, letting the ball get to his body, which is not big enough to sustain that type of play.Last edited by KBLover; 06-07-2013, 02:27 AM."Some people call it butterflies, but to him, it probably feels like pterodactyls in his stomach." --Plesac in MLB18Comment

Re: Rebuilding the Fear - Oakland Raiders M13 CCM
Wild One Under the Prime Time Lights
Raiders Offense Steals the Show in Nightcap,
Winning Offensive Showcase 51-29.
This is what can happen when Martens is in sync with his receivers. NFL fans around the country got a show of a game in general and got to see a young QB on top of his game.
The first half was all Raiders as the team put up 30 points on in the opening act of the game. Martens had 3 TDs at the half and neared in on 300 yards already. Akia Green caught 2 TD passes in the first half and almost had 100 yards.
Bull Griggs was taking advantage of the passing attack by finding room in the softened defense.
Patrick Peterson helped out with 2 picks as well.
The Titans got a big play in the first half to put up 7 on the board and start to give themselves some confidence.
Then it was their turn after the defenses remembered for a while that they can play also. The Raiders tried to slow the game down with more running attack, but the Titans weren't having that. They caught the Raiders looking for the pass and trying to get after Orton, especially after he found some rhythm.
Demaryius Thomas starting making plays against Peterson, perhaps adjusting to how the cornerback was playing him. In the end, Thomas had 2 TDs. Roy Helu, Jr. broke off a long run for a score as well as perhaps the defense was starting to play too lax. That long run woke them up it seems.
Of course, Helu was only in the game because Wagner was hurting people all day. He put out 3 Titans himself with his tackles, one of them forcing a fumble.
C.J. Spiller also added a spark by nearly breaking off a kick return for a touchdown on the ensuing kickoff. He was tackled at the Titans' 35-yd line, but a facemask penalty gave the Raiders the ball in the red zone. Bull Griggs took care of that drive himself for his first of two touchdowns.
"If I was runnin' it back, I would have been gone to the house, " Peterson was heard saying on the sideline, laughing with a couple teammates, "Zip! Just gone - they could just read my name heading in for six."
Next time on the field for the Raiders defense looked more like the Raiders defense. Suh picked up a sack and helped close out a drive.
Giordano made a couple good plays on some screen passes to force fourth down situations.
Maeweather picked up one sack on a 3rd down to force a long field goal that sailed wide right. He then picked up his second sack on a 4th down conversion attempt. His pressure on another 4th down attempt forced Orton to throw too early to his HB that was starting to come open.
Peterson re-adjusted his coverage to close down Thomas again. Smoke was largely avoided on anything beyond 10 yards.
The Raiders gave up next to nothing after that Helu TD run brought the score to 37-29.
Crabtree made his biggest impact since coming on the squad, taking in two touchdown as well.
"Martens, Green, Griggs, Crabtree. That's the way the offense is going to have to work. QB on point, top two wide receivers doing the job, and Griggs pounding it out on the ground. This game showed how dominating the team can be on offense, " a sportscaster commented.
The defense gave up more big plays than in recent weeks, perhaps because of the loss of Seawood, especially in the run game. Usually, Seawood is coming up to support the run with his big hits, but this time Giordano just wasn't up to snuff in that department, and Branch can't cover the whole field by himself.
"I think the defense is just adjusting still. Sometimes when they lose a key player, the defensive coordinator doesn't adjust to not having the playmaker, putting too much responsibility on the lesser player. He might have to dial it back a little, play a little more conservative or vanilla to help Giordano as well as his defensive ends, which are not pass rushers by nature. This is a pass rush defense first and foremost, so the adjustments are going to take a little time, " a local analyst commented.
Perhaps, but Maeweather fills a lot of holes - as he picked up a couple sacks. Gjere managed to get one and Suh's makes four sacks on the day. Not shabby. The lack of pressure, however, might be the biggest difference. Before, when they didn't get the sack, they got hits or made the QB shuffle his feet. Now, it's more all or nothing.
Still, the Raiders pick up a win and maybe figured some things out on offense. The win moves the team to 9-4 and are starting to get on a long win streak like they did last season, lead by Martens - just like last season.
"That's why they are patient with Martens. When he's hot, he does things like this. Just have to weather the storm until he gets it together. People forget, this is just his second year. He's still learning this game at this level. When he figures it out - defenses better be afraid, " the local analyst commented again.

Re: Rebuilding the Fear - Oakland Raiders M13 CCM
Aaryn DePriest on the Way Out?
There's been some stir caused by the play of rookie RG Max Justice. Despite playing on the opposite side of the line, Justice has played very well since getting the call. While it's been just a couple games, there's no denying the impact he's made on the running game.
"He's a little shaky in pass protection, but he gets off the snap so fast that he often makes up for it. In the run game, he's hitting the defenders quickly and making the right reads, " one scout spoke.
Justice and DePriest are different types of guards. DePriest is the big, mean, monster-type guard that wants to pummel the defender into submission, driving him off the line and engulfing him completely. Justice is a more athletic-type guard, using quickness and explosiveness off the snap to hit the defender and disrupt his movement. Justice is more likely to be overmatched physically but is more mobile and more likely to keep moving downfield if the play continues.
Most don't think DePriest will be moving on from Oakland - at least not yet - though if Justice continues to play well and develop, that decision may have to come as DePriest is not likely to be happy backing up. For now, though, the rookie is likely to have some sort of regression, but the 6th round pick is coming a bit out of nowhere to grab a little attention and some starts.
