      2019 Dawns!
      Raiders Expected to Win Superbowl
Expectations for the Raiders remain high as the team is again looked at as a serious contender for the Lombardi Trophy.

For the first time in a while, there are no significant position battles expected. There's only a few important spots up for grabs in all likelihood.

      Position Battles

      QB:
There's a battle for second string, and perhaps 3rd depending on how Ricketts does. Martens is the sure starter as he enters his third year. Papagianopulos and Ricketts will battle for #2. For now, there's no 4th QB on the roster to compete, but if either Ricketts or Papa struggle (or both), it's not out of the question.

      HB:
This is the most interesting position to be settled this preseason. The Raiders missed on landing Bordreaux from the draft, but snagged De Ray Ray in the 1st round. The team also signed Julius Hampton as a UDFA. Hampton's injury history was a major concern as he's coming off a similar injury to Peterson and offseason surgery, but scouts noted his hands and route running were solid for a HB. Vincent Mattison is also still around, looking to rebound from a serious injury of his own. Griggs is probably the starter, but #2 could be up in the air, so Caulder will need to prove he's still the best option versus the allure of a playmaking change-of-pace back.

Interesting side note: Taukei Griggs is on the trade block. Would the Raiders bring him back?

      WR:
Spots 1 and 2 are locked down. Beyond that might be a very interesting position battle indeed. So who all is vying for #3, the last often-used spot in the Raiders offense?

-Justin Blackmon - experienced with some flashes of effectiveness.
-Sam Jackson - rookie that has a lot of upside, but could use some work on his hands, especially in traffic. Otherwise, he looks like Akia Green part 2.
-De'Aarius Bumpers - surprise pick (and was booed at the draft) that has the hands of an experienced WR and is not afraid of contact.
-Ramonn Majors - 2nd-year player that started hot but tapered off so bad that he never saw the slot the rest of the year, until both Moore AND Green were hurt - and he did little with the opportunity.
-Bryan Mills - on the roster for his return ability, still trying to prove he can be more than a special teams player.

      LG:
Max Justice or Aaryn DePriest? Explosiveness and mobility, or power and domination? How the coaches will decide this is anyone's guess. Both performed well with their time. Teams are asking about Justice in trade, but Lyle rebuffs all efforts to land the surprise 6th-round talent.

      TE:
For now, the team will actually go with the project player in Tim Willison. The converted offensive tackle will get his chance to shine, and hopefully ease the load on Marcel Reece's aging body.

      FS:
Shyquawn Johnson will get the chance to show he should be starter. If Johnson can't, he'll be in special teams for sure. But he's going to be gunning for a starting role as a rookie.

      KR/PR:
Ray will likely be the punt returner. Kick returner might be a fight between Ray, Peterson and Smoke. Peterson has the inside track.

      3rd down HB:
Invitee Julius Hampton will get a chance to stick in this role. De Ray Ray is the most likely choice should Hampton prove to need more development.

List of Invitees/UDFA signings: (* denotes UDFA)

      HB Julius Hampton*
      LG Austin Vinson

I think you've abandoned scouting by ratings and started to scout by "weird" names. DeRay Ray? I wanna see the Papa and DeRay Ray combo.

That would be a fun way to go about things.

Max Justice blocking those evil doers on the opposing defense. Papa handing off to DeRay Ray and throwing to Bumpers with Winkenwerder stopping up the middle on our defense.

Mixed News Arising Out of Community Event

The Raiders took part in a week-long celebration of the arrival of summer starting on the day of the summer solstice while raising money for childrens' charities in the area.

One of those events involved an outing at a skate park.

This is where the bad news comes in. It appears that Danny Martens, who's own childhood was troubled to say the least, succumbed to the pure joyful fun the kids were having an took an ill-advised trip down the half pipe, suffering an injury to his throwing shoulder.

"It was stupid, looking back in hindsight, but in the moment, I just felt like a part of my lost childhood returned and I couldn't help myself, " Martens commented.

Fortunately, the shoulder injury does not appear to be career or season threatening. However, it will require extra attention each week to (hopefully) keep it from tightening up or becoming damaged. He appears to remain on track for the preseason.

On the positive side, Otto Freese seems to have made a breakthrough in his battle with depression. He remains under observation, but recent reports have been much better for the young offensive lineman. The same community event seems to have gotten him outside of his own head.

"Seeing those kids and some of the things they are dealing with showed me that I'm definitely fortunate to be where I am and that they have real, physical and severe mental problems to deal with and I'm just a grown man who can't shake a blue mood. It really gave me a new outlook and a new determination to fight, " Freese spoke.

Re: Rebuilding the Fear - Oakland Raiders M13 CCM

                      Preseason Wrap Up

                      Week 1

                      Trades:
49ers trade HB Taukei Griggs to Colts.
Ravens trade LB Geno Hayes to Broncos.

Raiders lose a tight one 27-24 to the Jaguars. Martens was solid with 2 TDs while Papagianopulos threw the game away late with a poor pass that ended the Raiders rally.

                      Week 2

Raiders good beat pretty good in this one, thanks this time to the starting QB Danny Martens and his 3 INTs. He picked up 350 yards, but was overly aggressive and just didn't focus.

The run game is off to a slow start as well. Griggs hasn't done much with his two starting opportunities, so it will be DeRay Ray's turn.

The defense seems to be ready to go. Suh picked up 10 tackles and Maeweather also had 10 with a forced fumble. Suh picked up a sack as did Wagner and Ash.

                      Week 3

                      Broncos release CB Asante Samuel.
                      Chiefs release SS Roman Harper.
                      Raiders release HB Vincent Mattinson.
                      Raiders release FS Lamonte Brown.
                      Raiders release WR Bryan Mills.
                      Raiders release RT Chuck Christensen.

                      Trades:
Raiders trade SS Mylan Green to Rams for a 2nd round pick.

The Raiders offense was dominant in this one and the defense came up strong once again for a 34-10 win over the Bucs. Martens threw 4 TD and for 458 yards in the game. Sam Jackson looked very impressive with his starting chance, racking up 176 yards on 10 receptions, scoring twice. Moore was in midseason form as well, scoring once on 10 receptions.

As is tradition under coach Lyle, week 4 of the preseason is a rest week of sorts for the veterans and gives the rookies, bench players and role players a chance to showcase their skills for a whole game.

                      Week 4

Colts QB Austin Duncan might be a monster in the making - he racked up a perfect passer rating for the second week in a row.

                      Panthers signed DT Marcel Darius.

The Raiders end preseason on a high note as the rookies and backups fought to a tough 30-27 win over the Falcons. Kip Ricketts got the start and showed one of those games where it looks like he's going to turn the corner.

James Hazzard forced a couple fumbles as he starts to raise a few eyebrows. DeRay Ray looked sharp running the ball, having the best performance of any HB in preseason.

Raiders end preseason 2-2 and now have to sort out the depth chart for the start of the regular season.

The Raiders released their starting offensive and defensive depth charts as they stand heading into Opening Weekend.

There were some surprise starters. Shyquawn Johnson looked like a mirror image of Lamel Seawood on paper, but Johnson played a bit better on the field.

DeRay Ray upends Bull Griggs, though this comes with an asterisk. Ray's conditioning is not particularly good, so Griggs figures to still see a heavy workload, especially if the team uses Ray's athleticism as a receiver on pass plays.

                            NCAA Football News:

Wisconsin OT Rodney Morgan showcased great footwork, good speed and great blocking in the early going.

Oklahoma State QB Stephen Diaz shows quickness and good footwork, using his mobility to make plays. He also has a good arm, according to scouts. Some wonder if he's too quick to take off, however.

                            NFL News:

Cardinals QB Brandon Weeden suffered an injury at the end of preseason.

The Jaguars put together an undefeated preseason.

                            Raiders News

The 2019 campaign begins with the Raiders expected to go deep into the playoffs. The offense is expected to stay opened up with about a typical pass/run ratio.

It will be interesting to see how the rookies perform as well as how tough the AFC West will be this year, and the Raiders will be looking to reclaim the division.

                            Scouting News:

Scouts took a look at QB Stephen Diaz, and right now, he draws comparisons to Terrelle Pryor. That's not totally terrible considering Pryor had his moments and Diaz figures to have more upside. He also has the requisite arm strength.

From the strange names department comes QB Cameron Czaplewski out of BYU. He's similar to Diaz - not as fast but perhaps more agile and in control of his body when on the move. He also has the needed strong arm and seems to be more accurate overall. Could be a target should this outlook hold up to further scrutiny.

DeRay Ray Announces His Presence With Authority
Rookie Scores Four Times to Lead Offense. Raiders Roll Over Chargers 48-20.

DeRay Ray acknowledges his supporters after gliding
to his 3rd rushing TD on the day.

The Raiders made a point to use their shiny new speed back as much as his body could take without risking injury. The young halfback responded by putting on a show in hopes of being the focal point every week.

"This NFL thing isn't that hard, " Ray chuckled, "I have to give my O-line a pat on the butt for giving me my choice of lanes and letting me showcase my skills along the way to our win."

The Chargers had their hands full with Ray and the rest of the rushing attack. Griggs and Caulder also had good days perhaps all three halfbacks complimenting each other with their diverse skills.

"Ray is the fastball, the hard to grab guy. Griggs is like a slider, some power, some nimbleness. Caulder is just the splitter, a hard, bearing down on you type of runner. If you're looking for one and you get another, it can be a long day for the defense, " an ESPN analyst commented.

The Raiders picked up 252 yards on the ground and Martens had a beautiful day as a result. He was fully able to exploit play action and run blitzes to move the ball. He made just one mistake late in the 4th with the game well in hand. Otherwise, he was pretty much perfect.

He hit Ray for a passing TD off a screen. The Raiders caught the Chargers coming on a run blitz and Martens stood in to take a hard hit. He got the pass off the Ray and with the defense all coming hard, Ray had to just pick up his blocks and scamper in for the score.

The defense did well for most of the day. They gave up 13 points (the other 7 came on Martens' INT), and the pass rush was once again pounding at the opposing offensive line, picking up 5 sacks. Maeweather picked up 3 sacks, letting him have an impact despite just 6 tackles (which was just one off the team lead).

For a while, Bobby Wagner was racking up the tackles as teams seem to be trying to go away from Maeweather and keeping a body on him as much as possible.

Raiders start the season on a winning note and pick up a divisional win in the process.

                                NCAA Football News:

Georgia DE Kade Snyder is very fast around the edge in pass rushing, but some wonder about his ability to read plays when he has to do more than just fire off to the QB.

Clemons WR Trent Platt has exceptional speed and runs good routes according to scouts. He also displays a great vertical in attacking the ball in the air.

                                NFL News:

MLB Roland McClain rejected an offer from the Dolphins.

Lions sign QB Matt Stafford for 6 years at a whopping $97.5 M.

OLB Aldon Smith accepted a 6-year extension worth $72 M from the 49ers.

WR Julio Jones was inked by the Falcons for $61.5 M over 6 years.

SS Antoine Bethea and the Colts could not come to terms on an extension.

WR A.J. Green has rejected an offer from the Bengals.

FS Earl Thomas grabbed a 5-year extension worth $36.3 M from the Seahawks.

DE Mario Williams has reportedly rejected an extension offer from the Bills.

The 49ers will be without newly signed LB Aldon Smith for the rest of the year. He was placed on IR today.

DE Mario Williams is expected to miss several games with an injury.

QB Terry Carter passes 20,000 career passing yards.

HB Arian Foster has 111 career TDs, passing Walter Payton.

Frank Gore ran for over 170 yards as his Lions nipped the Seahawks 45-41.

QB Jay Cutler is now 9th all-time in passing touchdowns.

                                Raiders News:

The Raiders lead off with a great offensive show thanks to DeRay Ray. They will look to keep things going and get off to a good start this year. Everyone looks on the same page coming off the preseason. The AFC West is already looking tough with the Chiefs and Broncos also winning their opening game.

The Raiders will have to miss Akia Green for a couple weeks. The injury looked more severe on the field at the time, but the swelling went down significantly during the week, hinting at a speedier recovery that initially thought.

                                Transactions:

Patrick Peterson has accepted an extension. Terms are thought to be for 6 years at around $64 M for the playmaking CB.

Bobby Wagner, however, has reportedly rejected the Raiders' initial offer. Terms were rumored to be around $5.7 M per year over 3 years. The whisper number for what Wagner wants is north of $6 M and a longer contract. With James Hazzard itching for playing time, Wagner might not get to see those terms. However, the team might relent given his ability in coverage...though Jake Olsen is also in need of playing time, and is the best cover LB on the team.

The team also made an offer to Davarius Bullock, but there's been no word from the player or his agent so far. Another situation where Hazzard might keep the Raiders from offering top dollar.

                                Roster News:

With Green on the shelf for a couple weeks, Moore, Jackson, and Bumpers will be the trio at WR this week.

DeRay Ray will likely see a similar workload this week, including return duties. Expect Bull Griggs to also have a similar amount of touches should the run game again be effective.

Mohammad Mata had his first forced fumble of his career. Hazzard also continues to shine on special teams, forcing a turnover. Some wonder what is wrong with Maeweather - thinking he may be playing through an injury. Three sacks is not normally a performance that causes such questions - the 6 tackles, for him, does.

                                Scouting News:

Penn State OLB K'Twon Wilcox might be the worst thing to happen to Bobby Wagner's hopes of getting re-signed. He is a pure coverage linebacker who plays in a Tampa 2 type scheme for the Nittany Lions. He already has NFL-level zone awareness and play recognition. He also delivers punishing hits and tackles well enough. Projected to go in the second round, the Raiders could "pull a Maeweather" and draft him in the first.
