Good call with Matt Flynn. Played a well rounded game, defense had no answer against Giles though. What a season it has been for you! Keep it up bud.

Yeah..only way this scenario happened is if the Ravens, Chiefs and Broncos all won to go to 10-5.

      Which is exactly what happened.

If the Raiders and Ravens have the same record and tied for the last spot, Raiders are out (lost to Ravens on week 2)

If the Raiders and Broncos tie for the last spot, Raiders should be in - beat Broncos twice.

If the Raiders and Chiefs tie - not sure - split season series. I don't know what other tiebreakers Madden has programmed.

If the Raiders and Browns tie - Raiders are out after this week's loss.

If the Raiders win, they are in with division and get home field and bye as they will have either the #1 or #2 seed (1 if Browns lose, 2 if Browns also win).

If Raiders, Browns, Chiefs, Ravens and Broncos are all 11-5, I think the Raiders are out. Broncos would win the division. Either Ravens or Browns would win their division and the loser there would take the second Wild Card as both have tie break over the Raiders.

Talk about intense and going down to the wire. What a finish this is going to be!

And what a fall for Wade. Takes the team to the SB and wins as a rookie, follows it up with another SB in his sophomore season, then gets benched for Mr. bulbous eyes, and now he can't even beat out Flynn. Yikes.

Yep, looking like a one-hit wonder.

Only reason I keep him around is his 99 THP and my desire for a vertical passing attack. But that might not last beyond this draft.

            Week 17 - Midweek News

            NCAA Football News

Rutgers TE Ruckas Cage made just one reception in the Rose Bowl. It was a game-winning catch, but scouts were not impressed.

            NFL News

Coach Gary Kubiak won his 100th game.

Ravens HB Ray Rice was a key factor in the Ravens' win over the Patriots last week.

Texans WR Dez Bryant will miss the season finale with an injury.

Steelers QB Ben Rothlisberger is 7th in Passing TDs all-time.

Lions WR Calvin Johnson passed Steve Largent in all-time TD receptions.

Giants QB Eli Manning passed John Elway on the all-time passing yards list.

            Raiders News

This is it. Win and the Raiders are in and in good seed shape. Lose, and anything is possible, including missing the playoffs completely.

The Raiders will have to do it against Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers. The Packers are also desperate for a win. They need one to move to 9-7 and have a chance at a Wild Card spot.

Fortunately, the Raiders will be at home, but facing Aaron Rodgers without your best DBs on the field is scary no matter where you're playing.

            Roster News:

WR Bryan Mills will take the kick return duties - and hopefully he can stay healthy in the process.

LB Bullock of course returns to LOLB as starter.

QB Matt Flynn will start this week. He got all of the first-team reps in practice, eliminating any doubt as to who will command the offense in this pivotal game.

Run Game, Takeaways and Field Position
Flynn Injured but Bull Griggs, Defense Carried the
Day in 38-24 Win Over Packers.

The Packers didn't make it easy. In fact, the turning point of the game was the turnover battle. The Raiders were able to avoid any giveaways, and the defense generated three takeaways, and the team scored 22 points off the turnovers.

That also led to the team dominating the field position battle in the first half. All but one of the Raiders' drives in the first half started beyond their own 40-yard line. The fact the team scored just 16 "pure" offensive points is telling.

What's also telling is that the Packers scored 24 points in just 23 minutes of possession. Despite not looking as good as he could have due to the pass rush, Rodgers still connected on deep passes, especially to James Jones. Rodgers threw for 280 yards, a touchdown and no INTs.

But he did fumble twice. One of those was on Ndmaukong Suh's sack as he continues to love his new position. The other was from Davarius Bullock getting sack #22 on the season. The Packers recovered the Bullock fumble, but the Raiders turned Suh's takeaway into 8 points to put the game firmly out of reach.

The Raiders had two more takeaways. Bobby Wagner scooped up a fumble and scored after Cedric Robins hit Jamel Ramsey. This came after Bobby Wagner took out DeMarco Murray. Ramsey had another fumble due to a vicious hit by Lamel Seawood. The rookie safety has fallen asleep on coverage at times, but he almost always delivers big hits.

The beneficiary of the very conservative approach on offense was Bull Griggs. The rookie running back put up 121 yards on 27 carries and scored 2 TDs. He didn't break off any long runs, but he was tough to bring down on most of his carries.

No one will ever confuse Bull Griggs with Barry Sanders,
but he's nimble in his own way.

The passing game was a bigger part of the action when Matt Flynn was in the game. The veteran was on fire and was keeping the tempo going on offense. He was 8 of 9 when he got injured. Schumacher started off looking okay, but eventually looked like he usually does these days. He did avoid the turnover and threw the lone passing TD. However, he picked up just 88 yards and the TD was more due to Moore's effort.

Moore corrals the somewhat off-target throw from Schumacher
in the hole of the defense for a touchdown.

In all, the Raiders threw just 25 times in the game.

The game was sealed when Brandon Madison knocked down a pass in the end zone on 4th down. Madison did get beat once by James Jones, but that was the only completion he allowed.

The Raiders did get the win and that secures the playoff hopes of the team, winning the AFC West. That leaves just the last Wild Card spot open, which will be filled by at least an 11-win team.

Excellent Raiders dynasty. 12-4 should at least get you the 2nd seed. Reading through a few pages, I noticed that you have QB Danny Martens. Do you know what his overall rating was as a rookie on the depth chart in practice/in-game? Thanks.

And good luck in the playoffs.

                      Wildcard Round - Midweek News

                      No NCAA Football News

                      NFL News:

Several coaches are on the hot seat and at some point, they get right or get sent packing. These coaches have been sent packing:

                      Ken Whisenhunt (TENN)
                      Marvin Lewis (BAL)

                      Wild Card Round Match Ups

                      AFC:
                      Byes: Raiders (12-4), Browns (11-5)
                      Broncos (11-5) @ Jets (9-7)
                      Chiefs (10-6) @ Colts (9-7)

Fun fact: Ravens at 10-6 are eliminated despite having a better record than division winning Jets and Colts.

"The AFC West was insane this year, and the Browns passed us by. It sucks, but that's football, " Ravens HB Ray Rice commented.

                      NFC:
                      Byes: Lions (11-5), Eagles (11-5)
                      Bucs (10-6) @ Rams (8-8)
                      Giants (9-7) @ Panthers (11-5)

There were some serious records this year. And how about the Browns? They rolled the dice last draft by picking up all those players and being active. Giles, while not great, makes things happen, and Trent Richardson turned into a monster.

                      Raiders News

The win on the final week of the season put the Raiders in the postseason and ended up giving them the #1 seed at 12-4, one game better than a bunch of 11-5 teams. They will need that week to try to get healthy.

WR Akia Green returns to healthy status and the bye will bring CB Patrick Peterson back. CB Fred Marshall also returns to get the special teams back on track (assuming he actually makes it through the game).

In addition, Matt Flynn is cleared to play, so he will return to action once the Divisional round begins, and will have both Moore and Green to target.

Looking at those stats and evaluating the 3-4/2-4-5 base defense and perhaps we don't have 4 good LBs.

Wagner, Williams, Bullock basically played like a 4-3 in terms of production. ROLB was just a wasteland all year.

Maybe it's time to go back to the 4-3 and turn Bullock into a DE. Go with Meaweather, Williams, Wagner.

Or perhaps Meaweather coming in will make all four LB spots sing? Wagner would likely go to ROLB.

                            Hmm...something for me to ponder.

                              NFL News:

Denver has fired coach Mike Tomlin, despite a solid season.

Seattle fired coach Munchak after a poor win-loss record, according to sources.

The Giants advanced after HB Nathaniel Pennix scored 3 rushing TDs on the day.

Chiefs QB Tim Maggitt posted a perfect QB rating to lead his team to victory over the Colts.

The Jets totaled 5 sacks against the Broncos in a win.

Fitting that the Raiders' first playoff opponent will also be the rubber game of the head-to-head clash of the Chiefs and Raiders this season. The teams split the season series and Tim Maggitt is coming in hot. The team will also have to deal with Jamaal Charles, something that didn't go so well the last time around.

The bye week helped get everyone healthy, aside from Martens, of course. Hopefully, Patrick Peterson will be able to play at a high level after the long layoff.

                              Roster News:

Patrick Peterson is back at his #1 cornerback spot, although some question that decision. Madison played very well as the #1 corner, but Peterson gets the call. Lorenzo Hopkins also hits the bench as Carillon will get the start as nickle corner. Peterson also returns to his kick return duties.

If anyone wondered how the corners would do, well today was the answer, and that answer was...terribly.

Patrick Peterson was clearly not himself and neither was Brandon Madison either, playing perhaps his worst game of the season. Jamaal Charles was actually contained nicely, but Maggitt threw for 400 yards and 4 TDs.

Peterson was making uncharacteristic errors all day. While sometimes his aggressiveness can get him in trouble, he was looking flat-footed and slow, displaying little of his usually great athleticism.

He wasn't the only one looking bad in pass coverage. Madison got burned for one big play and nearly another when he knocked the ball out of the receiver's hand. He then got burned later for another big play. Seawood wasn't much help on those plays either, the rookie's mistakes coming back to hurt the team.

Tyvon Branch picked off a pass in the end zone, but he bad a terrible read on a pass late in the 4th quarter to but the game out of the reach of a budding Raiders rally.

Offensively, the team put up points, but still was inconsistent. Flynn threw two picks and was off the mark all game long. He did find Akia Green for a nice TD in the first quarter and picked up another late in the 4th to Justin Blackmon.

Bull Griggs was no fault in this one, except for a rare fumble. Otherwise, he pounded in two touchdowns on the ground and 97 hard-fought yards. Not the greatest of days for him either, but he wasn't the problem. Once again, the problem was that the Chiefs could eventually adjust to him because the QB couldn't keep the passing attack on track.

Flynn was terrible in stretches - starting the game 3 of 10 before completing 5 straight and then back to terrible for the whole third quarter. This left Griggs as the only threat, and that didn't work out, not with the active linebackers the Chiefs have, not to mention Eric Berry in run support.

"This is a disappointing loss. We played like sloppy **** for too much of the game and it cost us. Some of the mistakes out there were pee wee league stuff and that's just unforgivable, especially at home. It was just borderline to disgraceful and we got the loss we deserved, " Coach Lyle spoke.
