Re: Rebuilding the Fear - Oakland Raiders M13 CCM

    Position Battles Overview

QB: This might be interesting. Reportedly, Danny Martens has been getting 1st team reps in practice this week. Whether this is just a sign that Martens will get first snaps in preseason, or an omen, remains to be seen. One would think Schumacher has the job, unless he does something to lose it, but perhaps the team is seduced by that deep ball accuracy, which is insane in a rookie QB.

HB: Taukei Griggs might have a shot here (if he's not traded), but Caulder remains the favorite. Steven Grant looks like the 3rd down back as the team is considering going back to the 3-back system, instead of 4 backs like in the last couple seasons.

WR: Akia Green will try to get the slot WR job from Sidney Rice. However, Green might can just be patient considering one (or more) of the three in front of him will likely get hurt. Again.

TE: No battle here. Kruger and Cooley are the 1-2 combo.

OL: No battles on the offensive line.

DL: No battles on the defensive line. Dawn will likely rotate with Walters as RE since Walters is still not the most conditioned athlete on the team.

OLB: Tevin Ash might be the happiest man on the team right now. He finally gets back into the starting lineup as the 3-4 places him in his pass rushing slot. Bullock is firmly in place on the left side as the young linebacker is quickly making a name for himself.

MLB: Wagner and Williams will likely duel for the 2nd MLB spot. It could be a close battle as well, since both have similar physical ability, if not a slight edge to Williams.

CB: No position battles here. Peterson, Madison, Carillon are the top 3. Hopkins has the physical ability but not the technique to move higher on the depth chart.

S: No battles here. Rookie Seawood is the starter alongside Branch.

K: Janikowski is the sure-fire kicker.

P: Maybe. Or at least someone else might get brought in as the preseason moves on. Shon Richardson isn't the best talent in the world (and maybe not an average talent). He has a big leg, but not necessarily the accuracy.

Yeah, got a lot of picks in the next draft - might need them.

Have 21 potential FAs, some are players worth keeping around.

Biggest names are Marcel Reece, Jared Veldheer, Aaryn DePriest, Brandon Madison.

Only 13 M in cap space. Might be letting Reece and Veldheer go, depends on what they want. Madison has to stay. Want to keep DePriest, too.

We'll see - should still be a good team, but might be hectic for a while.

Ouch, Schumacher wins a Superbowl and gets back to the next one and he may be out as the starter!

            Week 1

Martens did get the start after looking solid in practice. He struggled in the game against the Jags, however. Although the Jags are one of the better teams in the league, it was a little concerning. Martens is expected to get another start before Schumacher gets the weeks 3 and 4 starts.

Caulder looked strong, soundly beating Taukei Griggs, who continues to receive a mountain of interest as there's precious little talent available in the FA pool. Of course, that's also the reason the Raiders are unlikely to make a deal, who would they replace him with?

            Week 2

            Notable Signings and Releases:
LB Thomas Howard - Signed (JAX)
DT Systeek Wright - Signed (NE)

            Notable Injuries:
PHI: WR Desean Jackson suffers an injury and is placed on IR.
MIN: DT Vince Wilfork will likely miss the start of the season with injury.

Danny Martens continues to shine. Scouts are a bit baffled at how he's succeeding, even in the preseason, but one thing Martens has learned quickly - find Denarius Moore.

Martens threw for 488 yards and 4 touchdowns in his game this week as Lyle opened the playbook up dramatically. Moore was 168 of those yards. Kruger also passed the 100-yard mark with 145 and a touchdown. Moore caught 11 passes from the rookie QB. Kruger caught 10 and Blackmon caught 9.

Neither HB did well running, but Griggs did "win" the week...with 41 yards. Caulder managed just 9.

Lamel Seawood picked up an INT and Tevin Ash grabbed a sack. No stellar performances, but just 10 points allowed.

            Week 3

            Notable Signings and Releases:
            None

            Notable Injuries:
ARI: HB Beanie Wells is out for an unspecified amount of time.

Now, it's Schumacher's turn. Martens put up a strong performance, going 2-0 with exceptional play. Schumacher's first performance was brilliant, throwing 3 TDs in a tight 24-17 win, making his performance stand out even more. Taukei Griggs might be playing his way off the roster. He got the start and put up a putrid 2.3 y/c.

WR Akia Green showed his big play ability. He only caught 6 passes, but racked up 120 yards. There were only 25 YAC, so these were deep throws he was catching.

Bobby Wagner made 12 tackles on defense and picked off a pass. Kosbert picked up another sack, his second in three games.

            Week 4

            Notable Signings and Releases:
WR Devin Hester - Released (NO)

            Notable Injuries:
TB: DT Gerald McCoy is out for the year and placed on IR.
OAK: LT Jared Veldheer is out for the next 3 weeks with a shoulder tear.

            Raiders Cuts:
            TE Jed Bennett
            MLB Joshua Bordeaux

The organization decided to pull Griggs off the trade block. He has not showed well, but there's no one worth replacing him with. The team will work with him and maybe he'll get going during the regular season.

The Raiders finish the preseason at 4-0 as this time, Schumacher put up another solid game. However, it wasn't the most impressive effort, looking more like the 'usual' mixed bag from the QB.

One thing is for certain, Martens and his deep attack definitely looks enticing. Many expected Schumacher to produce deep throws like that on a consistent basis, but the accuracy for Martens showed time and again on deep passes.

Caulder settled his debate - he had the only good rushing game of the preseason. Really, the only question is at QB, and with both young QB putting up overall good-to-great preseasons, the decision only got harder.

              Week 16: @ Browns
              Week 17: vs Packers

Tough looking schedule all around. Start off versus the division and on the road at that. Jets have Terry Carter. Vikings are the defending Champs. The Bengals look solid. The Browns have all those 1st rounders on the roster. By the time we face them, they could be really nasty. Ravens are still solid enough, though we've had success against them in recent meetings. Lions and Packers might be the "weakest" teams on this schedule, and they shouldn't be push overs.

                  Week 1 - Midweek News

                  NCAA Football News:

Michigan's LT Otto Freese is having a dominant college career, and will look to make his senior year equally strong.

Oklahoma HB Lucius Dufree is looking to get back on track after missing the last two years with injury at his first school, Southern Miss.

QB Rob Robonovich out of UCLA has been called "a gift from the heavens." Talk about high praise. He's considered an easy can't miss starter, or more, at the NFL

                  Raiders News

                  Roster News:

The burning question all week was "Who will be the starting QB?" Well, we have the answer. Danny Martens is the starter, and, perhaps to help settle him in, he is penciled in as starter for the first half of the season. Reports indicate that Lyle made it abundantly clear to both QBs that nothing is set in stone.

Schumacher is taking the news in stride, "I know I need to get more steady with my play. Believe me, I can feel it coming apart just like you guys see it. I hope Danny has good success, and I'll be working hard to get my chance."

Schumacher's two years at starter garnered a Super Bowl win and another trip last season. However, last season, he produced fewer touchdowns, just 15. He did throw fewer interceptions on the year (11 vs 19 the year before), but he struggled with putting the ball in the end zone.

In something of a surprise, Akia Green will be the slot receiver that Martens will have as a target, pushing out Sidney Rice. Perhaps that final preseason outing where Green caught 6 deep balls for a buck-twenty in yardage won the day.

                  Scouting:

SS Mylan Green (FIU) is a strong safety...but he plays more like a free safety. He's best at zone coverage and moving in space, but does not read plays well as they are happening in front of him, does not shed blocks and is a poor tackler.

MLB Kendle Maeweather (Boston College) is no doubt going to be near the top to the draft board for this team come next April. He does so many things well that he looks as though he could start now in the NFL. With McClain gone, this would be the perfect player to build what looks like the next generation of the Raiders defense around.

LOLB James Hazzard (Akron) is a punishing tackling and has the speed and strength to make it count when needed. He pursues well and reads the movements of the blockers and ball carrier pretty well for a college player. The downside so far to him is that he's mostly a chase-and-tackle player. Nothing in the way of coverage or pass rushing. Then again, the same was said of Bullock...

The team is keeping an eye on HB Lucius Dufree. Some think he's just a Steven Grant clone, and thus shouldn't be interesting. Others feel that he might have some added dimension. Not much is uncovered except that his speed and evasiveness are readily apparent on tape.

"Little D's" Debut Lights Up the Scoreboard
Rookie Throws 5 TDs, Defense Pummels Chargers'
                    QBs. Raiders Rout Chargers 52-17.

Alrighty, then. The Raiders looked like an unstoppable force this week, putting almost everything together.

Almost - because the run game looked bad. But, perhaps that's why Martens did so well, the Chargers were gearing up for the run, daring the rookie to beat them.

While Martens is known for his big arm, it was his red zone precision that led to his big day. Four of his five TD passes came from inside the five yard line. He did get one deep TD pass to Denarius Moore. Weddle went out with an injury and Martens immediately targeted the replacement. Moore caught him flat-footed as he broke across for the post pattern and the pass displayed Martens' deep accuracy, landing softly in Moore's hands in stride for the score.

But, the deep ball wasn't there most of the day. He did make one mistake trying to force one to Moore in the first quarter. From that point on, he took what the defense gave him and worked off the run aggression from the Chargers by hitting Moore and Green short and letting them try to work.

"He looked as much like a West Coast QB as anything else today. He even moved out the pocket well when needed, something we were concerned about and thought would be the trump card for Schumacher, " one scout spoke.

Martens was sacked just once, though he was knocked out of the game for a few plays on another hit to the midsection. It didn't knock him off his game, though. In fact, the first play he came back in, he scrambled for a first down.

As bad as the run game played, both HB picked up a rushing TD. Caulder left the game with an injury, leaving Griggs to take the helm. Both halfbacks picked up just 3 yards per carry.

The defense let Xavier Slaughter sneak in for a TD on the ground and gave up one through the air. But the rest was a beating. The Raiders defense knocked out both the first and second string QBs, the latter, rookie Brandon Hankins, had to be carted off the field.

Before Ken Marshall, the starting QB, limped off the field, the secondary remembered they had hands. They picked off four passes in the game. Peterson, Branch, Olsen, and rookie Lorenzo Hopkins got his first career INT. Bullock and Cosbert were the ones that took out the QBs. Bullock had a sack as the highlight of his day while Cosbert picked up two sacks. Bobby Wagner closed down an escape lane that Tony Welch, the 3rd stringer, tried to slip through for the 4th sack.

The only player that could make headway was Pierre Garcon. He had 122 yds and the TD. The three starting WR did the damage for the Raiders. Moore and Green had 2 TDs. Blackmon picked up one TD.

"That was a pretty fun game, " Martens smiled, "I just felt in rhythm and the receivers and myself were seeing with the same eyes. Those guys were awesome. I hope we can hook up like this all season long."

The final damage tally for Martens was 316 yards passing, 5 TDs and 1 INT.

                      Week 2 - Midweek News

                      NCAA Football News:

WR J.J. Smoke out of UCF has proven to be a dangerous return man and also plays some cornerback as well. He also is very athletic and comes from a line of athletes in his pedigree.

LT Otto Freese caused Michigan fans to throw frozen pancakes on the field (WTF) after the lineman pummeled two Ohio State defenders on the same play.

Notre Dame QB Denny Thompson is coming off a 2,000 yard passing and 1,500 yard rushing season. He's looking to make this year even more special.

                      NFL News:

QB Justin Paskorz will be starting for the Patriots this week. That makes two rookie QBs from the last draft starting as he joins Martens in starting for his team.

Patriots also signed TE Rob Gronkowski to a 6-year deal worth $48 M.

WR Desean Jackson rejects the Eagles' offer.

Lions and Calvin Johnson agree to a mega extension worth $84 M over 6 years.

Mario Williams rejected the Bills' contract offer last week.

LE Calais Campbell might be out in Arizona after he turned down his offer.

Much to the dismay of the linebacker-loving Raiders, Patrick Willis agreed to 6-year deal worth $60 M with the other Bay Area team.

Jairius Byrd agreed to a 5-year deal worth $32 M with the Bills.

Vikings sign Jerome Felton to an extension worth $2.7 M over 3 years.

Raiders will be down to two HB this week, already making the decision to go with just three HB look a little suspect. Fortunately, the injury to Caulder is only a short-term one.

                      Roster News:

Taukei Griggs will get the start (as teams continue to pester the Raiders about a trade) and Steven Grant will pull double duty as back up and 3rd down back.

Martens and Akia Green solidified their spots on the depth chart after last week, but will need to keep doing well to hold on to them.

Lorenzo Hopkins might be pushing for the nickle corner spot. Carillon could find himself in a fight for his job if he can't start making plays again.

                      LB Tevin Ash
                      POW: 85 to 86

                      Scouting:

There's no denying J.J. Smoke's athleticism. Speed, quickness, footwork, jumping, it's there. What's not there is his ball skills and his mental abilities are solid for where he is, but not eye-popping. Considering that he's going to be a top 5 pick, meaning we'd have to pay a premium to get him, we'll have to watch what happens going forward.

One reason is CB Rashon Tucker out of Maine. He doesn't have the absolute knack for man coverage that Smoke has, but he's got very similar athletic ability - definitely enough to be in the same ballpark and more than enough to be effective on the football field. He rates equally well in technique and is equally "meh" in ball skills. The advantage? Fourth-round slot. Cheaper player, both in salary and in pick cost to draft him.

HB Lucious Dufree got more of a look, and he's grading out a lot like Xavier Slaughter did a few years back. Good speed and nimble on his feet, Dufree confirms the elusive back profile we saw earlier as well as on tape. Two big question marks remain: injury history/durability and overall instincts. Those two years of injury definitely made their mark in both cases.

C Patrick Seaver looks interesting on the surface. His raw power and ferocity in blocking were very impressive on film. However, there are concerns about his lack of footwork and slowness getting from the snap into his blocking stance. Right now, the feeling is that this throws off his footwork and lessens the effectiveness of his overall blocking technique.

                        No Help For Martens
Fumbles Force Martens To Do Too Much.
Sloppy Play Brings Loss 16-14 to Ravens.

Coach Lyle has to be steaming after this one.

Neither of his halfbacks could hold on to the ball and when Martens saw that, he tried to do too much and made turnovers of his own.

The sloppy play caused the team to waste a strong effort by the defense. The Ravens tried to pound the Raiders defense into submission, and while backup HB Mark Ingram got yards, he never could break a big play and the Ravens couldn't put up a lot of points.

But they didn't need to as the Raiders offense continued to shoot itself in the foot.

Taukei Griggs ruined an otherwise very solid day by fumbling twice and losing both. Steven Grant also fumbled, but that one went out of bounds.

Martens had two fumbles, including one where he was blindsided, thanks to rookie Zac Foster completely missing his assignment. Martens didn't have a chance and tried to throw at the last minute, and it was ruled a fumble. This was after what looked like a solid drive to get the Raiders into FG range.

"That was a bunch of ******** today. That's all I have to say about this game. We played like wet, soggy **** in the rain. It's ridiculous when the rookie is fighting harder than every other person in that offensive huddle, " Lyle ranted after the game, "It's a disgrace."

Except for the lack of takeaways, the defense did all it could. Tevin Ash even got his first career interception in the game. Bobby Wagner picked up two sacks and a forced fumble to go with 13 tackles. Bullock showed up with 7 tackles.

The pass rush was active again, picking up 4 sacks and the coverage didn't allow a passing touchdown or any big plays.

Neither quarterback was impressive. Flacco was held to 172 yards, an INT and a 62.5 rating. Martens had 191 yards, a TD and 2 INTs. Both QBs 16 for 27 on the day.

WR Akia Green was the recipient of that touchdown pass. He caught a 8-yard pass in the end zone for the score. He had a near catch on a deep pass, but it was swatted out of his hands at the last moment.

                          NCAA Football News:

Akron OLB James Hazzard flies around the field looking for people to kill, figuratively (we think), but scouts still think he's too small to be an effective LB and too light to play as a true DE.

                          Raiders News

Raiders fell to 1-1 after an atrocious offensive display. They have to lick their wounds and face the 1-1 Bears at home this week.

                          Roster News:

Danny Martens will start this week. The team has seen what he can be like when he's on fire, and what happens when the offense collapses around him. To his credit, he kept fighting. He made some ill-advised throws, but the bigger issue was no help around him as pretty much everyone else underachieved or made a big mistake.

On the plus side, Bobby Wagner was awarded AFC Defensive Player of the Week.

                          Scouting:

Akron LB James Hazzard - For someone with a reputation of playing with near-reckless intensity, his pursuit of ball carriers is nothing special. There's no denying the power part, however. When lines someone up, they are going down. Painfully. Underrated is Hazzard's quickness and footwork, especially for a linebacker. His smaller size helps him take shorter strides and leave him more able to change directions. Currently a late-5th projection, and the team would gladly take him there.

GT Halfback Jawara Baxter looks interesting in terms of his physical abilities. He looks to have elite speed and gets to top speed quickly. He can see the hole reasonably well and tends to have some idea of what's going on around him. The down side is that he's neither powerful nor elusive, making him hard to consider.

Ohio halfback Joseph Shepard looks intriguing. He is a mix of power and elusiveness, and his nimble feet. He seems to have enough speed and quickness to survive in the NFL. More looks at this halfback are warranted.

                            Martens-To-Moore Shines Before Injury
Martens Throws Three TDs to Moore, a Fourth
to Green in 34-20 Win Over Bears.

Danny Martens went all out aggressive with the passing attack. The result was a bad completion percentage, hitting 50% on the nose, but also four touchdowns and almost 300 yards passing. As a 'bonus', the rookie didn't throw any interceptions. So far, the move to Martens has produced one poor game, but the season is still early.

And now, the rookie will need to do it without his prime target this week, Denarius Moore. The star WR was the target on three of those four touchdowns, picking up 8 catches and a gaudy yardage total in the process. Perhaps easing concerns was the throw to Akia Green, an 18-yard strike to the back of the end zone that allowed Green to keep his feet in bounds.

Martens' 50% completion percentage doesn't show his accuracy on
deep balls. Throws like this do. This turned into Moore's 3rd TD.

There's also concerns on defense - or perhaps it is just the evolution in process. Matt Forte ran wild, picking up 180 yards, though 83 of them came on one run that produced his touchdown on the day. Perhaps more concerning is that the 3-4 is acting like a 3-2 with Wagner and Bullock being the two.

Wagner picked up 13 tackles and another forced fumble and sack. Bullock picked up 6 tackles and another sack as well.

Olsen has been a non-factor for the most part in the early going. Aside from his interception a couple weeks ago, he's done little. Tevin Ash is pretty much a carbon copy. He did pick up his first sack of the year this week, but he was also the one Forte got his long run against.

That said, against the pass, the front seven tends to get pressure. Cosbert picked up a sack and Suh and Walters came close with hurries and hits on Cutler. At one point, Cutler completed 9 passes in a row. Aside from that, he was held to a 7 for 28 day with an interception.

Brandon Marshall was contained all day by Brandon Madison. Marshall's 2 catches came when the Bears' alignment matched Marshall on another defender.

So, perhaps the Raiders are evolving into a pass-oriented defense. The early performance would seem to indicate that. That said, rumors abound about a shake-up among the linebackers, including giving rookie Earl Williams his first start and Cedric Robins, who made the squad out of preseason, a start.

And the Raiders have to show they can do this one the road. Both their solid wins have come at home.

So it seems they depleted their 2017 picks and 2018 picks, and have needs in many places (probably trading players as well), so they definitely rolled the dice.
Wow they certainly did that one draft too early lol. The Maeweather/Smoke draft is stocked with talent!
