Re: Rebuilding the Fear - Oakland Raiders M13 CCM
Defense Saves the Day.
7th Straight Win Comes as Martens and Defense
Stand Firm. Raiders Win 17-13 over Jets.
The offense found themselves struggling most of the day. Martens started the game off target and facing tight pressure from the Jets' corners. Revis was locked up on Akia Green much of the day, and Martens stayed largely away whenever Revis was on man coverage.
Instead, he turned to Blackmon, who had a strong day. Blackmon also had the lone successful play for the offense in the first quarter, a long catch-and-run for a touchdown. Other than that, the Raiders could do nothing. Bull Griggs was shut down, further adding to the problems.
Terry Carter couldn't do much more as the first quarter belonged to the defenses. Still, Blount's power running proved effective, and the halfback broke open for a 26 yard TD run.
The second quarter was much of the same. The Raiders defense started dialing up pressure and getting to Carter, and that slowed the Jets' attack down. The Raiders put their first real drive together on the day, looking like a solid offense. Unfortunately, Martens was picked off in the end zone when his pass intended for Blackmon going across the back of the inside was cut off.
After the turnover, Blount was still able to find some room mixed in with some getting stuffed, and that kept the Jets moving downfield. The defense stiffened, however, and the Jets were held to a field goal to take a 10-7 lead.
Martens wasn't phased by his mistake. He continued to look for deeper passes and started working some play action as Griggs made a little headway on the ground. Later in the drive, he saw Green facing zone coverage for a change. Green got past Revis cleanly and worked against the safety Zbikowski. Martens put it up towards the pylon and Green adjusted to the throw for the score in the front corner of the end zone.
Martens' second TD pass found Green to make up for the end zone
interception he threw earlier.
That made the game 14-10, Raiders lead, and that's how the game would enter halftime.
Jets got the ball first in the second half and picked up some yardage. However, rookie corner Lorenzo Hopkins picked off Carter to give the ball back to the Raiders. Martens was able to engineer a drive that resulted in a 35-yard FG.
In the 4th quarter, the Jets continued to wear on the Raiders with the ground game. Blount didn't rip off any other big runs, but a steady diet of 3-5 yard runs helped the offense move. The defense was beginning to wear down, and Lyle got more aggressive with the blitzes as the Jets neared scoring position. This didn't help the defenders' fatigue, but started slowing the Jets down a little. Bobby Wagner then came up with a key sack. This helped force the Jets to settle for a FG.
Raiders couldn't do much on offense still, having to rely on Martens finding space on passes and a few more decent Griggs runs. Caulder got a few carries as well, and he did well with them.
But no points could be scored and the Raiders played for field position. This would be how most of the 4th quarter would go. Blount trying to get going, the Raiders trying to keep the defense fresh as possible with first downs and a slowly improving running game.
Late in the 4th, the Raiders had the chance to run out the clock. They forced a 3-and-out from the Jets and had the ball at the 2-minute warning. However, as the team was trying to run clock, Griggs made a mistake. He took a hit by LB Jacquian Williams and fumbled the ball. Fellow LB D.J. Smith was there in a hurry to scoop up the loose ball. The Jets had a chance in Raiders' territory for the go-ahead TD late.
The defense came out and didn't hold back. Still, the Jets pushed ahead, looking as though the turnover was the break they were looking for. Carter ran the hurry-up offense and found his way into the red zone. Raiders called for a blitz on the field as the Jets scurried into position for the next snap. Ash, Wagner and Bullock came with pressure from their gaps. Initially, they were picked up, but the secondary coverage was solid, forcing Carter to keep looking. Wagner pushed into the middle of the pocket, Ash was coming from the left and Bullock came free from the right. Carter saw himself besieged and threw it up in the end zone. He had challenged Brandon Madison...
...And Madison won. He made a great reaction play on the ball and picked off the pass.
"They don't challenge me often, but when they do, I make them pay, "
Madison commented after the game.
The desperate and demoralized Jets defense tried to hold up. They had time outs, so if the Raiders couldn't get a first down, the Jets would get another chance.
But Griggs saved some of his best runs for this moment and Caulder also pushed up the middle. Raiders picked up a couple first downs and that sealed the game.
"These kinds of wins can keep us going emotionally for a while, " Lyle spoke, "We fought together against another tough team in their house and found a way to pick up a teammate and win the game. That's what we are about, all of us fighting together. When we all fight, we can't be stopped."
The win puts the Raiders at 8-1 and made good on the Chiefs' loss.

Coach Ander Lyle Wins 75th Game
Last week's victory gave Coach Lyle his 75th career win. No one knew about it until the Elias folks brought it up during the week.
Lyle himself might not have known. Or if he did, he didn't care. Judging from his comments, it's hard to tell:
"I don't coach this game for my own pride, but to build something the guys on the field and my staff can be proud to say they were a part of. Whatever happens is because of them more than it is me anyway. Regardless of how many wins or what significant milestones people say I've achieved, it's not about any of that, but when you look back - can you say you were proud of what you built or were a part of, " Lyle commented when asked about it during a press conference this week.
Lyle currently holds a 75-25 record as of last week's games. He has a 9-3 record in the playoffs with all three losses coming in the Super Bowl, where he is 1-3.

Week 11 - Midweek News
No NCAA Football news.
NFL News:
Bucs sign DL Henry Melton to a 6-year extension worth $50.6 M.
Ben Rothlisberger passes Fran Tarkenton on the all-time passing yardage list.
The Rams were pummeled by the Bears this week, losing 54-20. Cutler threw 5 TDs in the contest.
The Raiders and Panthers are both 8-1 and both on winning streaks of 6 or more games. Behind them are six teams all with 6-3 records.
Raiders News:
Impressive as the 8-1 record is, the team has only a 2-game lead in the division as the Chiefs also won to be 6-3. The Broncos used a 3-game win streak to get back in the picture at 5-4.
Raiders' Next Game: Raiders (8-1) @ Lions (6-3)
Injury Report:
Raiders Injury Report Pos Player Injury Note WR Denarius Moore Out 1 week (abdominal tear)
Injuries have been relatively kind to the team this year. Moore will be the only player to miss this week's game.
Roster News:
Earl Williams is expected to get the start as the #1 MLB this week as Bobby Wagner has cooled off significantly of late. Part of that might simply be that Wagner got fewer chances than Williams, or it may be that Williams is able to do something the Wagner can not on a consistent basis.
Tevin Ash will remain the starter at ROLB this week.
Notable Progression:
RG Cale Welch
RBK: 90 to 91
LB Davarius Bullock
ZCV: 67 to 69
STA: 84 to 86
SS Tyvon Branch
BSH: 75 to 77
CB Brandon Madison
ZCV: 77 to 78
WR Justin Blackmon
RTE: 79 to 80
Scouting:
HB D.J. Leopard (Mississippi St.) seems to have just one thing going for him: nimble feet. He takes short, quick strides and changes direction well. He hasn't been able to translate that into good game tape, though. He doesn't run even decent routes for a halfback and is not particularly elusive either. He tries to use changing directions to give himself the ability to find the hole with his decent vision, but it doesn't seem to really come together for him.
Pittsburgh WR Deandre Cornell displayed his vertical in his recent games, causing scouts to mark him as exceptional so far. If that pans out along with what scouts think about his top-tier acceleration and quickness, he could be a very interesting target."Some people call it butterflies, but to him, it probably feels like pterodactyls in his stomach." --Plesac in MLB18Comment

Re: Rebuilding the Fear - Oakland Raiders M13 CCM
Question for the readers.
I would like to somehow implement a random development system. I realize it's not "truly" random in the game since you either buy a point or don't.
But perhaps there's some kind of quickish way I could randomize how I develop that might emulate players developing at varying rates and create the possibility of a top guy not panning out, etc.
Just a thought that came into my head. I might have to do something similar for the FA system, despite the fact players do reject and decide if they want to re-sign or not. Perhaps what I did in M12 in that regard.
Thoughts and ideas welcome."Some people call it butterflies, but to him, it probably feels like pterodactyls in his stomach." --Plesac in MLB18Comment

Depending on what round the player is selected in, the player will have a corresponding likelihood to succeed. For instance, say the number generator works on a 100-point scale. For first round picks, any number below 50 would mean they will realize their potential. For second rounders, that changes to every number below 35. For third rounders, maybe cut it off at 20. This would continue down the line. The cutoff numbers would obviously be up to you.
If they receive a number within the "realize my potential" range, then you are allowed to use 100% of their XP gained for progression. If they receive a number outside the desired range and will not realize their potential, you are only allowed to use 25% (this number can change) of their XP gained. Maybe you only allow him to use the XP from practice or only from games.
Maybe if they fall within some predetermined range on the generator, they will have off the field issues. For instance, if they specifically land in the limited range of 55-60 (randomly picking a number range here), then they could have any number of issues (not report to camp, clashing with coaches, enjoy going out to the club too much with that new paycheck, etc). These would be the guys who have the ability to be productive, but not the head for it. You could always throw in the uncovering of an unknown medical condition.
For FA, you could do the same thing. The better the player is, the less likely they are to sign (don't want too many elite players).

Re: Rebuilding the Fear - Oakland Raiders M13 CCM
I'm liking where you're going, JHey.
Piggy-backing off your initial thoughts and thinking some more about it over dinner, I had this idea:
Pre-season Checks
-Troubled Player: A player may become distracted by off-field issues at the start of each preseason.
Base chance: 5%
-----------------
Player on trade block (including if game places him there automatically): +15% (he may be unhappy/upset over being shopped)
If player has a storyline that indicated discipline/personality/etc issues: +25%
Total is added up and rolled against 1d100. If die roll is under total, then the player is distracted.
Weekly Development
Each week, a player "rolls" to see how he can develop that week.
Initial base chance: 50%
If drafted in...
1st round: +15%
2nd round: +10%
3rd round: +5%
4th round: no change
5th round: -5%
6th round: -10%
7th round: -15%
UDFA (signed after draft): -20%
-----------------------------
Injured Player: can not develop (player is spending too much time in rehab/recovery)
Troubled Player: -20% (nagging issues sometimes come up)
Player wants to extend, but not extended: -10% (contract distraction)
Offered in a Trade: -15% (upset over being shopped)
Development Rating:
Slow: -30%
Normal: -15%
Quick: no change
Superstar: +15%
Total is calculated and rolled against 1d100. If die roll is lower than total, player develops well and can develop as normal.
I have this loaded into a spreadsheet that can calculate the percentages for me and keeps them at easy reference. Also makes making changes/additions easy as long as it's something I can track easily in the game itself and assign a number representation to (so the modifier kicks in properly) with a consistent rate of change (nothing like +20, +10, +5, 0, -10...that's two 10 point changes with 5 point changes in there as well, my Excel skills aren't THAT good).
I'll run it when I can and see how it looks and will put it up for feedback. Of course, feedback is welcome now as well."Some people call it butterflies, but to him, it probably feels like pterodactyls in his stomach." --Plesac in MLB18Comment

Just a few names to get an early look. Did the last class and a few other guys.
I went with projected round instead of drafted round. That way reaching becomes a risk instead of a benefit.
"Round 8" = a projected UDFA player.
Caulder got 20% on the troubled player chance because I think the game put him on the block (might have been Taukei Griggs).

Re: Rebuilding the Fear - Oakland Raiders M13 CCM
Streak Ends in OT Loss
Martens' Third Mistake Was One Too Many.
Raiders Lose 26-23 to Lions.
This is the kind of game that can make a team sick for weeks.
The Raiders started off looking solid throwing the ball. The running game wasn't doing much, so Martens took it upon himself to move it through the air.
He picked up a touchdown on a screen pass to Bull Griggs, one of the halfback's 7 catches on the day. He also lead a drive that ended with a Bull Griggs TD run. Sidney Rice also came alive early.
Raiders were up 17-0 in the first half, but there were some troubling signs with Martens missing receivers and throwing an interception that led to no points for the Lions.
In the second half, the Lions got on the board after Lamel Seawood was burned by Randall Cobb for a 59-yard pass play. Two plays later, Tony Scheffler was in the end zone to give the Lions their first points.
Then, Martens would throw his second interception later in the quarter. That led to a Lions' field goal.
The Raiders turned more to the ground game and started seeing some success. It wasn't a pretty drive, but it got the Raiders 3 points. Martens, however, continued to look out of sorts throwing to anyone not named Akia Green. For his part, Green proved to be very reliable to say the least. He caught 13 passes on the day for nearly 200 yards. No touchdowns for him, but many of his catches kept drives alive.
Stafford was getting some throws going and showed that Martens wasn't the only one with a deep throw. Calvin Johnson picked up 3 catches on a drive in the fourth quarter, one of the few WR who caught multiple balls against Brandon Madison. Those were the only three catches he got, however. So for the most part, Madison did close down Megatron.
Still, they helped put a TD on the board for Detroit on a Santez McKenzie short run. That score gave the Lions a 23-20 lead with under 2 minutes left.
Other than that, the Lions were patient with FGs, pecking away and taking what the Raiders gave.
Down by 3, Martens started looking more like himself. He calmly lead a drive down the field, confident in Janikowski. The rookie QB moved it down instead the Lions' 25 yard line, and were a good tackle by Tulloch sniffing out a short pass to Griggs away from keeping that drive going.
Still, the Raiders had run down the clock to 7 seconds. Janikowski made the FG and the game went into overtime.
The defenses were digging in as both teams struggled to move the ball in the extra period. Raiders had a drive going that at least got them into FG range after an Akia Green catch off play action.
However, this time Janikowski would not come through. He sliced a 48-yard FG attempt wide right.
The Lions got a few first downs but still had to punt. The game was looking like it might be a tie again. But Martens got off-target again, trying to get the ball to Akia Green for the 14th time. The safety read the play and picked off the pass.
This put the Lions in prime position for the win - and that's what they did Dan Carpenter put it through.
The turnovers made the difference - not only Martens' mistakes, but the Raiders did not get any takeaways at all - which has been very rare this season.
The loss snapped the team's 7 game win streak and drops the record to 8-2. While still strong, it gives the Chiefs a chance to get back the game they lost last week.
Martens threw the ball 55 times in the game, most for the rookie this season.
"Danny [Martens] threw the ball a ton, which helps makes the picks look a little less bad. It's just one of those days for him. He couldn't get fully into rhythm and was just a little off on some throws. It's clear he favors Akia Green, though. The two rookies have hit it off big time, " one analyst spoke, "But seeing Griggs so involved was interesting, as was Blackmon disappearing."
Blackmon caught just one pass, and was targeted only 3 times. By contrast, Green was targeted 18 times.
"If you have a fantasy team, you better have Akia Green if you have any one on the Raiders, " a sports radio host spoke after the game.

Week 12 - Midweek News
No NCAA Football News
NFL News:
The Vikings and Raiders are on the schedule for this Thanksgiving, delivering a rematch of last year's Super Bowl. Adrian Peterson was big in that game, and he comes into this one seemingly hot as well.
Percy Harvin helped his Vikings to a win last week with 2 TD grabs.
Lions HB Ben Tate is expected to miss some games with his injury.
Raiders News
The Raiders and Panthers both lost last week, ending the longest winning streaks in the league. The Lions, the team who downed the Silver and Black last week, now have the longest win streak at 5 games.
The Broncos at 6-4 have the next longest streak at 4 games, and have climbed to just 2 back of the Raiders. The Chiefs won, putting them just one game back at 7-3.
Raiders' Next Game: Raiders (8-2) @ Vikings (4-6)
Injury Report:
No injuries reported this week.
Something that's been rare in recent years - no injuries. Denarius Moore recovered on schedule and is expected to play.
Roster News:
Justin Blackmon has been relegated to the bench by the combination of Moore's return and his own poor play last week. Sidney Rice and Akia Green remain as #3 and #1 WR, respectively.
The team will switch Ndamukong Suh and Keiwone Walters in hopes of boosting the production of both players. Suh will be at RE and Walters will take the NT spot.
Scouting Report:
Wisconsin RE Fernando Douglas looks like a possible candidate for the defensive line. He's 6'6", 312, and loves to power forward in rushing. However, there are significant questions about his footwork and football smarts, especially for a first round projection.
The perpetual search for safety prospects, especially at strong safety, turned up Marquess Fuqua out of Penn State. He's built like, and plays like, a physical corner than a pure strong safety. He tackles well and has some oomph in his hits, and he has pretty decent ball skills, especially for a rookie. On the other hand - he can't cover worth anything. He reads plays well enough, he just doesn't have the technique to get to where he needs to be. Projected as a second round type at this point.
The Raiders ponder options at HB - do they stay with two power backs or go with a power-speed combination, and if the latter, is Steven Grant their man? As the team keeps watching kids, VT's Darius Sherman emerged as very...interesting. He looks like a pure speed back - timed at a 4.3 on the field, shifty footwork, decent burst to break into the open, and solid enough vision. Then the interesting part happens - he's reputed to just run over people on contact. He is not noted for his physical power, however, leaving scouts to wonder just what's up with this kid...or the reports. Consensus has him as a late second round pick.
WR Ramonn Majors out of Marist College was the focus of scouts this week. They looked over his tape to see if his athleticism is consistent, and they found that he is very physical as well off the line. Rarely was Majors held up on press coverage and he attacked the ball with a superior vertical. His quickness looked decent enough to get the job done. One thing is that he loses track of the sideline at times - so that is one negative on him. Another is that his routes are just average at best right now, and he's not likely to break one open after the catch. He still looks like an exception possession receiver, though.

Re: Rebuilding the Fear - Oakland Raiders M13 CCM
A Bullish Performance
Bull Griggs Powers Raiders to Decisive
45-20 Victory over Vikings.
If there was any worry about the Raiders coming out flat after last week's tough loss, there was no indications of that this week - except maybe from the defense against the run.
Adrian Peterson got his yards - and in chunks for the most part. The Raiders by no means stopped him as he rolled up over 100 yards on barely a dozen carries. Both Peterson and Griggs had one giant run to really help the numbers. Griggs had an 80-yard run for a score in the 1st quarter as he spun off a hit and found daylight against the grain, and Peterson broke an outside run for 59 yards as Tevin Ash and Bobby Wagner got caught up on blocks.
But the Raiders had Bull Griggs firing on all cylinders, showing that burst that made him the starting halfback. Griggs ran over the Vikings for three touchdowns and over 175 yards on the ground.
Griggs pushes ahead for his third touchdown on the day.
It was good he got it going because the passing game still was out of sync. This time, it wasn't so much Martens, though he had some errant passes, but instead the receivers were dropping passes early on. Both Green and Moore had three drops in the first half alone (Green ended up with 6 on the day), and at one point, Martens' completion percentage was 44%.
But Martens has shown the deep ball all year, and this game was no exception. The best pass he threw all day was hitting Denarius Moore in stride for his first touchdown on the day.
Martens-to-Moore is a combo the team could get used to. Here,
Moore wins on a 58-yard pass play.
That throw and two of Griggs' TDs put the Raiders out in front 24-3. That let the defense sit against the pass, usually not a good thing for the opposing QB.
"The best defense against Peterson is a big lead, and that's what we were able to do this time, " Coach Lyle spoke.
Mark Mallet started losing his rhythm and he threw 2 INTs in the game. Patrick Peterson got another pick as QBs continue to challenge him heavily this year. The other went back for 6 as Lorenzo Hopkins, other rookie corner who's also picked on quite a bit, got the better of it this time.
As usual, Brandon Madison was largely avoided. Only two passes came towards him.
Davarius Bullock picked up 2 sacks, though teammate Tevin Ash was right there on one as the OLBs met at the QB. The move of Suh to RE paid early dividends as the big defender had 5 tackles and a sack.
Peterson got his touchdown late in garbage time. Same was true for Mallet and his TD pass to Kevin Ogletree.
The win puts the Raiders at 9-2 and ensures sole control of 1st place for another week.

Re: Rebuilding the Fear - Oakland Raiders M13 CCM
Week 13 - Midweek News
NCAA News:
Oklahoma HB Lucious Dufree has walked off the team after being benched. Questions and rumors abound about whether or not he has left the game of football completely.
NFL News:
Steelers HB Shonn Greene is getting ridiculed about his fumblitis last week that led to a 39-9 defeat.
Niners' wide out Eric Decker caught 2 TD passes this week.
OLB DeMarcus Ware is now 7th all-time in sacks.
OLB Davarius Bullock is on pace to break the single-season sack record. He has 19 with five games to play. The Raiders' LBs as a whole have 32 of the team's 41 sacks.
Raiders News
The Raiders got back on the winning track, but now have to deal with two hot teams in their division. The Chiefs also won, winning their third straight, while the Broncos have won 5 straight to get right back in it. The Raiders can't afford to give up any games. And guess who is next on the schedule...
AFC West Standings:
Raiders 9-2
Chiefs 8-3
Broncos 7-4
Chargers 5-6
Raiders' Next Game: Chiefs (8-3) @ Raiders (9-2)
Injury Report:
Denarius Moore left the game with an injury last week, but it was minor and he is expected to start in this week's game. The Raiders remain healthy with no one on the injury report this week.
Roster News:
DE Kooper Cosbert will be benched this week for undisclosed reasons. He is not a healthy scratch, according to team officials, and is listed as Active and will dress for the game. Regardless, Keiwone Walters will start at LE this week. Immanuel Dawn will take nose tackle duties while Suh remains at RE after a solid showing there last week.

MCV: 81 to 83
ZCV: 65 to 68

LG Aaryn DePriest
RBK: 89 to 90
LB Davarius Bullock
ZCV: 70 to 73

Scouting:
East Carolina LT Jamen Bucannon grabbed some eyeballs this week with his power and determination in the run game. Scouts give him very high marks for strength and impact at the point of attack. Some questions are there about his pass protection as well as his ability to sustain blocks against defenders not bowled over by his initial contact, however."Some people call it butterflies, but to him, it probably feels like pterodactyls in his stomach." --Plesac in MLB18Comment
