Re: Rebuilding the Fear - Oakland Raiders M13 CCM

No Martens. No Offense. No Hope?
Offense Collapses Without Little D. Raiders
Eventually Cede Game 23-20 to Chiefs.

The defense could only do so much. For much of the game, Jamaal Charles was held in check as the offense at least put some drives together. The defense even scored, getting a pick six from Brandon Madison in the first quarter.

But then Danny Martens went down hard in what was a typical hard-hitting contest between the two AFL rivals.

With Schumacher at the helm, the team tried to continue it's usual attack. However, his first pass was picked off. Defense held the Chiefs to a field goal in a fierce goal line stand. Raiders led at the half 10-6.

The second half featured Bull Griggs getting going. His running let Schumacher fire off a couple passes in play action, and the drive ended with Griggs punching it across from a yard out.

But Charles was heating up. He broke off a 57-yard run to key a drive of his own. Charles squeezed through an opening to finish the drive, but the Chiefs failed the 2-pt conversion as Immanuel Dawn stopped up the lane. Raiders led 17-12 after three.

Another decent drive came to a disappointing end as the team settled for a short field goal. Schumacher showed the one thing he does better than Martens in the drive: scramble. A 5-yd run picked up a 3rd down to keep the drive alive. However, he, unlike Martens, could not find a way to finish. Raiders took the FG to take an 8-point lead.

Chiefs refused to give up and the defense could not get any momentum. The Chiefs continued to run. Charles returned to keep the punishment going, before he was knocked out for good by Earl Williams. Still, Stephens-Howling got the benefit of running against a waning defense, and Tim Maggitt took advantage with some timely passes. Patrick Peterson missed a chance for a pick, letting Dennis Pitta catch one over his back for a key conversion.

The Chiefs scored a TD and needed a 2-pt conversion to tie. Raiders were geared for the run, but the Chiefs ran a dig route and found space in the back of the end zone for the score. Game is tied up at 20.

And Schumacher wilted. He could not put together anything and the Raiders were forced to punt it away. The Chiefs faced stiffer opposition as the Raiders made Stephens-Howling work hard. But they got into position and kicked the go-ahead FG with just over a minute remaining.

Schumacher had a time out and a minute to go, but, again, he's no Martens and failed to even make it interesting.

"You could tell the difference, " one analyst commented, "Schumacher's deep pass just doesn't have the accuracy and placement. Even with open receivers, some of the passes made the receiver break stride to make awkward catches."

"Typical Schumacher. Decent numbers, but freaks out and fails when the game is on the line. We are doomed if Martens can't come back before the playoffs, " a local sports talk host commented in the postgame.

The loss is bad enough. Losing to the Chiefs is twice as bad. But losing sole control of 1st place makes it even worse. Then they have to look at their injured young leader on the sideline - and wonder if that's where their hopes are as well.

The fans are wondering if the team's playoffs chances just went into the Black Hole this year.

Bull is lighting it up. If Martens is out, will he get a mega workload? Really wanted to grab Bull in my CCM but he went way too early.

Love the development system you came up with.

Without Martens, we'll definitely be going back to a ground-and-pound type of offense. Take maybe an occasional shot off play action or if Schumacher is looking good at the time, but I could see Griggs and Caulder both piling up carries.

Not really happy about this run defense either. I know Charles is good and all and it was Peterson before that, but still... Guess it could just be a matter of the opposition making it look worse...

I would argue that Peterson and Charles are two of the toughest, if not THE toughest, backs to stop. Looks like the defense handled Stephens-Howling and McKenzie (DET) pretty well recently. I would say it's a case of playing a couple super stud backs in consecutive weeks and not that the run defense is weak.

When I play MIN or KC, I get a headache in the loading screen because I know what is coming.

I agree 1000%. I've played Charles an insane amount of times because I have a Chargers & Broncos CCM going and I dread every time I play him. Even when I hold him in check it takes just one play and he's gone

              Week 14 - Midweek News

              NCAA Football News:

Mississippi Valley State DE KC "Sweet BBQ" Williams set the SWAC sack record this week. Some scouts are calling him a top-10 kid now.

Michigan LT Otto Freese got to make a touchdown dive after dominating in the trenches all game.

UCLA QB Rob "Robo" Robonovich is on track to win the Heismann and some project that he'll be the first overall pick.

              NFL News:

Dolphins HB Chris Johnson scored 3 TD's as his team won 34-20 over the Colts.

Lions QB Matthew Stafford threw 5 TDs in a narrow 42-34 win over the Cardinals.

Dallas TE Jason Witten is now 4th all-time in receptions.

Rams QB Tony Romo threw his 330th career TD this week.

Broncos are expected to get HB Pierre Thomas back this week.

              Raiders News

Raiders fans have quite a bit to be nervous about. It is conceivable for the Raiders to go from controlling their own fate to missing the playoffs entirely in 4 weeks' time. The Browns (or Ravens, both teams are 8-4) have one wild card spot, and the AFC West is a crazy mess now:

              Raiders 9-3
              Chiefs 9-3
              Broncos 8-4
              Chargers 5-7

The Chargers are barely relevant, but not dead. The Chiefs won their 4th straight on the back of the Raiders, and now, here comes the Broncos, who have won six in a row. Meanwhile, the Raiders have no momentum, major concerns at QB, a slumping run defense, and just a 2-2 record in their last four games.

Should the Raiders not somehow pull this off, they could be sitting home. Third place is not out of the question, and unless the Ravens and/or Browns fall off and no other team gets hot, the AFC West is not likely to carry two Wild Card spots.

And there's the whole Martens situation...

On the plus side, Akia Green passed 1,000 yards receiving as his strong rookie campaign continues.

              Injury Report:

              Raiders Injury Report
              PosPlayerInjury Note
              QBDanny MartensIR (Broken Collarbone)

The worst possible news came in from doctors on Wednesday as Martens tried his best but could not even begin any training drills or conditioning without major pain. The team had no choice but to shut the youngster down.

"We're hoping for a long career from 'Little D' and while we want him out there, we don't want to risk his health, " coach Lyle spoke.

              Roster News:

With Martens on IR, the Raiders signed QB Matt Flynn to fill the spot. Flynn will ride the bench this week while he learns the playbook, but Schumacher has been put on de facto notice to get the offense going. 3rd string QB Colin Kaepernick getting a start is not out of the question.

Tevin Ash will be back to a specialist role as he continues to struggle as an every-down player. Cedric Robins will get the start at ROLB with Ash and Olsen coming in depending on formation.

Shaquille Carillon returns to nickle corner as rookie Lorenzo Hopkins has been quite feast or famine and struggles with zone coverages. Carillon is a little more rounded in his abilities.

              Notable Progression:

              RT Gabe Carimi
              IBL: 84 to 85

              LB Jake Olsen
              AWR: 88 to 89

              WR Akia Green
              CIT: 79 to 80

              Scouting News:

There has been talk of the Raiders operating mostly out of the 2-4-5 next season, netting some of the benefits of have 4 talented LBs as well as a 4-3 type pass rush.

As such, the team took an interest in KC "Sweet BBQ" Williams. While he might not be reachable for the team, especially if they are shooting for J.J. Smoke as well, Williams seems to be a solid player. Good raw speed for a defensive end with an uncanny ability to time the snap count. He's a pure speed rusher with finesse moves. He's keeps his eyes on the play, however. He knows how to read screens and will pursue ball carriers trying to get the edge on him.

Another prospect a bit lower on the board is USC DE Keithen Lett. He has a similar physical profile as K.C. Williams (not sure if that's saying something good about Lett or bad about Williams), and perhaps even more aggressive moves on the pass rush. Early impressions also speak favorable to his explosiveness on the snap and ability to chase and flow in space. He does fall for play fakes and other deception too much, though that could be worked on with film study. Lett is a late-2nd projection by most scouts, definitely in reach should the teams choose to target him.

If the team wanted to go in a different direction at ROLB and perhaps stay in a base 3-4, Rutgers OLB Trayion Morris might be a kid to take. He's not going to "wow" people on tape, unless they are impressed by a technically sound player that uses his head and makes few glaring mistakes. He has enough physical ability to get the job done, reads his keys, knows how to fight off most blocks, and makes sure, solid tackles. He also keeps his body in prime physical shape. A potential "whole is greater than the sum of his parts" type player. Projected as a late-2nd pick.

                Schumacher, Defense Do Enough
Raiders Withstand Freeman Barrage, Get Key
                Win Over Broncos 30-13.

Not the prettiest game ever, but the Raiders will take it. Schumacher looked his usual up-and-down self, making two mistakes, both at Brent Grimes who just seems to have the Raiders' number, but also made two good throws to Denarius Moore for a couple touchdowns.

Bull Griggs and the defense took care of the rest. Griggs continues to look strong on the ground, picking up 157 yards on 31 carries as he got the workload everyone expected.

The run defense took a big step towards proving that it was the quality of opposition that gave them fits recently. Pierre Thomas, just coming off an injury, was contained for a measly 2.1 yards per carry.

Of course, the Broncos rarely rely on the running game against the Raiders, and today was no exception. Josh Freeman put the ball in the air often and with excellent effectiveness. He gathered up nearly 400 yards in the air, didn't throw an interception and completed 69% of his passes.

The defense, though, did not break. While the pass defense didn't get a pick, they were pounding the receivers after the catch all game. Torrey Smith put the ball on the ground twice in the game, once due to Bobby Wagner and once by rookie Lamel Seawood.

"His coverage is iffy at times, but he always tries to kill receivers over the middle, " one analyst spoke. "He's like a strong safety playing free safety."

The defense jumped on both of those fumbles. They generated another takeaway when Bobby Wagner blasted Freeman on a sack and Shaquille Carillon was there to pick up the loose ball. Torrey Smith's fumbles were recovered by Keiwone Walters and Cedric Robins.

The combination of turnovers and making enough plays to keep the Broncos out of the red zone went a long way to assuring victory. The Raiders also picked up 4 sacks. Three of those sacks came from linebackers - including two by Bullock to run his total to 21 sacks.

The Broncos' defense harassed Schumacher much of the day, but got burned on two Denarius Moore big plays. One was a catch and run for 83 yards and another was a 17-yard pass play that hit him in the end zone.

Grimes, both the beneficiary of two picks and the victim of the 2 TDs, commented after the game, "With Denarius, you just have to hope the quarterback makes a mistake. You know, you can't keep winning against a guy like that, so you have to hope your boys up front make the QB mess up. Then you take advantage."

The Raiders may need more of that from Moore going forward. Akia Green, the one who did a lot to help the team endure Moore's injuries, went down with an injury in this game.

Should Green miss significant time, it would mean that the dynamic rookie duo of Martens and Green will have to watch the end of the season play out, hoping that the 7-1 spark they put on the team in the first half holds up.

Meanwhile, the two they displaced, Schumacher and Sidney Rice, will have to pick up the load.

For now, though, the Raiders eliminated the Chargers from divisional contention and dealt a blow to the Broncos' chances. They'll have to wait to see what the Chiefs, and the rest of the AFC does to see the tally for the week.

                  Raiders News

The Raiders regained the division lead after the Chiefs lost last week. The Chiefs have actually been outscored this season 371 to 357, but are 9-4. The Raiders can't rest yet with 3 games to play and still just two games away from third place.

The Browns and Ravens also won to move to 9-4. Right now, the Broncos are behind the 8-ball for the playoffs, sitting at 8-5.

The Raiders will have to finish the season without their rookie wideout as he will miss the rest of the regular season with an injury.

Green finishes the year with 1,078 yds, 84 receptions and 11 TD.

Davarius Bullock is closing in on the sacks record. He has 21 sacks on the season.

                  Roster News:

The WR depth chart will fall as Moore, Rice and Blackmon, in that order. Rice has shown ability to make big catches while Blackmon is very inconsistent and sometimes completely disappears.

No other changes to the depth chart are expected.

                  Scouting News:

The Raiders took a look at some quarterbacks for a possible backup role. Arizona's Kip Ricketts caught the eyes of scouts because he has a strong arm, a decent deep ball and seems to stay very calm under pressure. He also seems to keep the ball out of harms way and throws consistent spirals on his passes. He's projected to go in the late second round, putting him in reach for the team.

Tuskegee LT Kyle Baldino looked good at first, displaying good footwork and solid upper-body strength. However, looking closer at his tape showed a lot of fundamental problems with his technique in both run and pass blocking.

Re: Rebuilding the Fear - Oakland Raiders M13 CCM

Offense Stalls. Defense Slams. Raiders Win.
Offense Continues to Struggle Without Martens, But Defense Flusters Ryan, Jags For 24-12 Win.

This might be the new normal while Martens is out. The offense got behind Bull Griggs and Julio Caulder, and even they didn't have tremendous days as the Jags defense steadily improved against the run attack as the game went on.

Fortunately, the Raiders defense also got lathered up, laying big hits, sure tackles, and generating more turnovers, now up to 35 on the season.

"The Raiders put their big boy pads on, " one sports talk host commented. "They were laying out MJD and everyone. They just about killed Amendola on a kick return."

For all the big hits, the Raiders lost the injury battle. Patrick Peterson, who has 7 picks, and Davarius Bullock (21 sacks) both went down with injuries. Bull Griggs also had a scare, but played the whole game. Wade Schumacher also went down hard, but missed just a couple snaps.

The move to right end continues to pay dividends for Suh. The monster defensive lineman picked up two sacks on the day. The Jags' offensive line was no match in general, giving up 7 sacks, with the linebackers again doing most of the work with 5 of those sacks (Suh had the other 2). Wright, who came in for Bullock, Wagner, Williams and Ash were the LBs who tallied sacks.

Wagner also forced a fumble and Tyvon Branch put a perfect hit on MJD to force the second fumble. Eric Williams jumped on that ball and took it in for six. Suh won the battle at the bottom of the pile to recover the first fumble.

Tyvon Branch's nose for turnovers continued this week. This
hit would lead to a Raiders defensive TD.

Matt Ryan racked up yards and had a decent completion rate, but the pressure was too much. He threw two INTs, both the result of the pressure he faced. The first was to Brandon Madison, who was actually beat on the route, but Bullock put pressure on Ryan and forced a lower velocity pass. That allowed Madison to recover and make a play, and with hands like a WR, he doesn't drop many like that. Tyvon Branch grabbed the INT when the Raiders confused Ryan by mixing up zones. Branch came down to guard the strong flat and Ryan was going that way and off his back foot at that. Branch made the play.

Wade Schumacher wasn't a ton better. He threw a terrible pass, trying to work it to Moore on an out route. The only thing stopping that from being a pick-six was the defender unable to stop his momentum from going out of bounds. Otherwise, he was just hit and miss. He made one good throw to Justin Blackmon, with an assist to the route combination as the safety jumped Sidney Rice's route, leaving Blackmon to come free a little later.

The other TD on offense came from Bull Griggs, who had 110 yards on 26 carries. Julio Caulder had 7 carries for 26 yards and Grant even got a few for 13 yards. Schumacher had just 157 yards, and the Raiders didn't even break 300 yards of offense.

"You just have to wonder if this can keep up, especially in the playoffs. And if Peterson and Bullock are going to miss time, it's even more shaky. Bullock, despite the gaudy sack total, is more easily absorbed, given the depth a LB and a shift back to the 4-3 if it came to that. But losing Peterson would hamper the pass defense, perhaps forcing Hopkins, a rookie, to start, " one analyst spoke.

The Raiders are certainly getting injured at the wrong time. After a long stretch of good health, the injury bug has made its way back around to the team, and biting some of the best players.

Still, the Raiders soldier on, and get another step closer to a divisional title and perhaps a much-needed 1st round bye.

                        Shoo Schumacher. Come in, Flynn.

Ander Lyle just announced that he will make a change at quarterback. Matt Flynn will get the call in place of Wade Schumacher for at least this week and perhaps the rest of the season.

"Lyle is making a big gamble. If this doesn't work out, he will be second guessed all week, and heaven forbid if the Raiders don't make it or advance deep into the playoffs, " Trey Wingo spoke.

Matt Flynn seems more than confident, saying at the podium that he is "ready to take the helm and lead Oakland to a title." Questions abound, however, about how well he'll be able to run the offense and if he'll have any chemistry with his receivers.

                        Schumacher took it...less than well.

"I can't believe this. I can see sitting behind Martens. I didn't like that either, but the kid did well and sparked the team. I can live with that. But this, I don't get this **** at all. Of course I've struggled a bit. I've been sitting all year. It's going to take time to get the kinks out. And I don't have Akia Green to compliment Denarius [Moore], " Schumacher commented.

Of course, Schumacher's critcs are apt to point out that he's struggled since being a starter. Not that it's any guarantee Flynn does better, and if he doesn't...then what? Does Lyle suck up and put Schumacher back in? Does he ride Flynn all in? Does he bribe Goodell to overlook the IR rule and put Martens out there with a bionic arm? (Do the Raiders have the technology? Can they rebuild him in a week?)

                          Raiders News

The Raiders continue to be dogged by their AFC West rivals.

                          Raiders: 11-3
                          Chiefs: 9-5
                          Broncos: 9-5

In fact, despite sitting with the best record in the NFL, the Raiders have NOT clinched anything. No division, no playoffs. Not helping matters are the Browns continuing their revamped season, going to 10-4 and there are a boatload of 9-5 teams. If the Raiders lose out and those 9-5 teams win out, the Raiders could be in 3rd place in their division...and watching from home...with 11 wins.

In fact, the Browns on the Raiders' next opponent, and the two squads will clash this week. A win could wipe all those scenarios off the books. A loss might keep everyone in the Black Hole on spikes and spears for another week.

Raiders' Next Game: Raiders (11-3) @ Browns (10-4)

In individual news, LB Earl Williams won player of the week.

The Raiders have a tough choice in regards to Patrick Peterson. He could return in time for the AFC Championship Game, but can the defense survive that long? What happens this week might determine if the team IR's Peterson, or cuts someone to try to find depth at corner.

Fortunately, Bullock's injury is minor and shouldn't be of consequence to the LB-deep roster.

                          Roster News:

As reported, Matt Flynn takes the helm at quarterback.

Patrick Peterson's injury not only shakes up the corners, but also vacates the KR role, one where he's made some dynamic returns.

At corner, Brandon Madison becomes the #1 corner, and this will test how much of a shutdown corner he might be. Shaquille Carillon and Lorenzo Hopkins, both feast or famine type corners, will be #2 and nickle corner, respectively. Adam "Pacman" Jones will be the dime back.

Fred Marshall will fill in for KR and PR...and he's not the most durable player around, so it might get "interesting" on special teams should something happen to him.

                            Gone to the Dawgs.
Raiders Flattened in Dawg Pound. Offense Useless,
                            Defense Cracks, Raiders Fall 37-19.

All of the fans', analysts', and players' worst fears came to pass.

Fred Marshall got hurt, so return game died.

Corners were overmatched as Carillon and Hopkins were terrible.

Blane Giles ran wild as the LBs and defensive coaches were not used to facing a true running QB who also can throw.

Offense was somewhat better under Flynn, though most of the numbers put up were in garbage time, including a 52-yd score for a TD as time expired. The defense scored 2 on a safety after the Raiders failed to score on 4th and Goal from the 1. Flynn did look better as the game went on.

Moore left the game with an injury. Bull Griggs played hurt and it showed.

The only positive was Bobby Wagner still trying to make plays. While the team is still intent on drafting Kendall Maeweather, Wagner is making a big case for remaining a big part of the defense in some capacity.

Things just fell apart from the start and the second quarter was the quarter from Hell for the Raiders. Blane Giles ran in two TDs on the team (I knew I wanted him...) and Trent Richardson was contained and then Bobby Wagner ended his season in all likelihood as the HB had to be carted off. Even then, D'Cota Bell proved he's a capable back, but Wagner, again, popped a Browns HB and created a turnover.

Denarius Moore was also trying to make plays, racking up 100 yards on the day before he left with an injury. At that point, with a back up QB and a bunch of bad WR on the field and down by a ton, it was over.

"What would this 'offense' do when facing a quality opponent? Just what we thought. #FaiderOffense, " a local sportswriter tweeted.

"I hate you Martens. Y u get hurt? It's ur fault! #MartensFault" was another tweet.

"Good choice, Lyle, you ******** loser. #LyleTheLoser #Faiders" was retweeted a bunch by Raiders fans.

The team also felt the loss of Bullock in this one. Part of the problem was that the ends did not collapse around the QB. Walters and Suh made no headway and Wright tried, but didn't get it done. Only once did the edge rush contain Giles...and it lead to a Tevin Ash sack. If only...

Raiders fall to 11-4 and it could get really dicey. Believe it or not, the team with the best record in the NFL might be facing a must win game...to make the playoffs at all!

Fun stat: The 18-point loss represented a deficit twice as wide as the other three losses - combined. The Raiders lost their other three games by 2 points, 3 points and 3 points for a total of 8 points...

Just a sneak-peak at the scenarios.

Has it ever happened in the NFL where three teams all have the best record in the NFL, but two of them might not even make the playoffs?

Lions are 11-4. They are in and looking for home field.

Browns and Raiders are 11-4...and haven't clinched a thing. Insane. So it is a must win...with a wounded offense and defense. LOVELY.
