    Week 8 - Midweek News

    NCAA Football News:
Mississippi Valley State DE K.C. "Sweet BBQ" Williams burned Alcorn State's offensive line for eight sacks.

    NFL News:

Jets fell from the ranks of the unbeaten and were the last unbeaten team remaining. They fell to the Bills 22-16.

Jason Witten is nearing Jerry Rice's all-time receptions mark.

Aaron Rodgers is 8th all-time in passing TDs.

Vikings QB Mark Mallett is expected out for multiple games.

Patriots sign LB Jerod Mayo to a 4-year contract extension worth $32.9 million.

    Raiders News

The Raiders can't get any breathing room in spite of the winning streak. The Chiefs also won last week to move to 5-2, staying 1 game back. The Chargers dropped to 4-3 this week with the Broncos at 3-4.

Raiders' Next Game: Steelers (2-4) @ Raiders (6-1)

Agreed, in my ccm he's a 96 overall with over 90 in all blocking attributes and like 99 strength.

Perhaps - it's going to depend on how Wainwright recovers. He's starting to return to form as his AWR comes up. I think Seaver would have to be on the bench until it picks up.

That said, I'm wary of low STA on o-linemen. Aaryn DePriest wasn't as good as his ratings indicated until he picked up his stamina. Jeff Otah - half his problem was STA (even got him hurt a few times). Once DePriest or Otah hit "yellow", it was a crap shoot. Since the offense, aside from quick strikes on deep balls or a passing attack at its peak, is a more methodical offense - the OL needs to hold up in stamina.

If Wainwright is still looking "off", we might take Seaver - depends on how it goes, what round he ends up projected (not that the other teams will go strictly by it) and if we go after Smoke or not (which will likely take 3 1sts to ensure we get him unless we got lucky with one of those picks being a top 5, if not top 3 pick).

Heh, pretty much sums it up.

Yeah, Schumacher's bad side came out that game.

Martens is coming back, but he's cold now, so that will be interesting. It's the first time he's been cold this season. Will be interesting to see if his strong start can continue.

Having him on the bench year 1 could be a good thing as he will have a whole year of experience points that you could put into his stamina

                    Welcome Back, Little D!
Fired Up Martens Gives Raiders Big First Half
Lead, Roll Steelers for 6th Straight Win 40-16.

Any concerns about Martens' performance coming off an injury were left on the side after seeing the rookie QB throw for 3 TDs in the first half to power the team to a lead they would never let go.

The only negatives were an interception by Martens on an off-target pass and another injury to Moore, whose increasing susceptibility to injury continues for mysterious reasons.

Prior to Moore going out, He had the big play of the day. Martens burned the defense coming after him in a blitz and Moore left the safety covering him behind on a sharp break off his route and the made the defender miss for a clear path to the end zone.

Akia Green was the more consistently chosen target for possession catches and when not looking for the huge chunk of yardage, though he did score on a diving catch from long distance. His day consisted of 9 catches, 120 yards and a touchdown.

Bull Griggs didn't look stunning, but he looked stable and reliable. He scored a touchdown on the ground and picked up 113 yards on 28 carries. Many think he's earned the right to be #1 HB even when Caulder returns, at least until there's a sub-par game.

Not much else was had for the rest of the receiving threats as Martens, unlike Schumacher, frequently throws to his primary WR and that's about it. Everyone else is a dump off or decoy on most pass plays, and Martens isn't one for the check unless forced.

Defensively, Brandon Madison actually allowed a catch. Mike Wallace got a couple catches, but Madison grabbed an INT. Patrick Peterson grabbed an INT as well, essentially taking the ball out of Antonio Brown's hands.

The linebackers are finding a different hero each week. After seeing Bobby Wagner cool considerably from his 14-tackles-a-game play, Earl Williams, the other ILB, has come on strong. Williams had 9 tackles. Davarius Bullock racked up the tackles as well, this time he was the over-a-dozen man, as the LBs call it.

Lately, Bullock going without a sack has been as rare as Madison allowing a catch. It didn't happen in this game as Bullock ran down Rothlisberger on a 3rd and long play for the sack in the 4th quarter. Bullock had a near miss earlier in the game, dragging down a scrambling Rothlisberger for a miniscule gain instead of a sack. The sack gave Bullock 15 on the season at the team's halfway point.

The touchdown came when the Steelers found a favorable match up. Andre Roberts, the Steelers' slot WR, ended up matched 1-on-1 with rookie safety Lamel Seawood, there very situation the team tries to avoid, especially in man coverage. However, this time, the team got caught and Seawood was lost in coverage.

                      Week 9 - Midweek News

                      No NCAA Football News

                      NFL News:

Pro Bowl voting has begun. Danny Martens is trailing another rookie QB, Austin Duncan of the Colts.

WR Calvin Johnson racked up 156 yards en route to a Lions' victory.

Bears WR Brad Smith is expected to miss some games with a somewhat serious injury.

                      Raiders News

Raiders' Next Game: None - Bye Week

Raiders enter the bye and the second of their season at 7-1, tied for best record in the league with the 7-1 Panthers. The Jets at 6-1 and the Browns, who gambled heavily in the offseason, are reaping the rewards at 6-2.

                      Injury Report:

                      Raiders Injury Report
                      PosPlayerInjury Note
WRDenarius MooreOut 3 weeks (abdominal tear)
LBK.J. WrightOut 1 week (broken ribs)

Moore goes on the shelf for 3 weeks, but one of those is the bye week, so he will miss only 2 games. Trainers are trying to figure out a way to keep their dynamic WR healthier.

Meanwhile, HB Caulder and LB Robins will help the depth situation at their respective positions greatly.

                      Roster News:

Bull Griggs has been named the starting HB. Caulder will be #2, and the time share should be something interesting to watch. Both HB are starter quality and have proven themselves. Can Lyle keep both satisfied?

At WR, Blackmon and Rice move up a slot to #2 and #3, respectively. Green remains at #1 and is quickly turning into the most reliable target.

At LB, Robins will get the start at ROLB, pushing Olsen to the bench for now. However, Olsen could be another bad Bobby Wagner game away from starting at ILB as the team looks to rotate LBs to the best playing quartet at the time.

                      Scouting:

The J.J. Smoke watch continues as the top prospect remains at cornerback. While the prior thinking was that the team would be interested in him only as a corner, seeing Moore go down once again likely keeps the team just as keen on Smoke should he turn into a wide out.

Should Smoke move to wide out, the team would need to be ready with other possible CB options. Anthony Noel might be one such option. The Tennessee product shows good awareness on the field and workable technique in man coverage. He does get fooled too often on fakes and double moves, so that might be a major issue.

The team examined the tape on WR Silas Olaniyan out of West Virginia and came away unimpressed. His hands don't project to be reliable at the NFL level, and he's not gifted with speed or physicality. Considering he's a top 10 projection, it looks like the Raiders will definitely let him go by.

WR Deandre Cornell (Pitt) looked interesting at first. His cuts are sharp and precise, and he has a good explosiveness to him. He gets to his decent top speed quickly as well. Definitely a "quicker than fast" type player. The part that had the team wary on him is the drops. He can get open, but he loses concentration at times and his hand position is not optimal. While that can be worked on at the NFL level, it's still a black mark on an otherwise solid tape.

LB James Hazzard continues to go under the radar of most scouts, continuing to keep the hard-hitting loose cannon LB in the 7th round. It is understandable as there doesn't seem to be a lot of "football" in him. He's fast, quick, powerful, aggressive, and once he figures out what's happening, he's relentless in chasing the ball. The questions: What happens if he's blocked? Is he only good in space or when untouched? How quickly can he diagnose what's happening? Can he anticipate? It's already known he's terrible in coverage and pass rushing, two skills were raw power and will aren't enough.

I think there's a general consensus around here that JJ Smoke is a top 5 drafted player in M13.

                              Week 10 - Midweek News

No NCAA Football news this week.

                              NFL News:

Mark Mallet is ready to go for the Vikings this week.

Steelers re-sign WR Mike Wallace for 5 years and $43.5 M.

QB Eli Manning continues to move up the passing charts, making many wonder where he'll rank when his career is done.

HB Pierre Thomas (Broncos) will be out as he suffered a broken jaw last week.

                              Raiders News

The Raiders look to continue their winning ways coming off the bye. The Chiefs lost to go to 5-3, so the Raiders have the chance to take a 2-game lead.

K.J. Wright returned during the bye week, leaving Moore as the only injury heading into this week's game.

                              Roster News:

Tevin Ash is getting the start at ROLB this week. Coach Lyle thinks he had a good week of practice and that it will carry over into Sunday's clash.

This is also the first week that Bull Griggs will have Caulder backing him up. It will be interesting to see if Caulder can do his thing as the #2 HB or if a change of pace, like Steven Grant, would be a better paring. Of course, Griggs is also looking to prove he's still got the burst needed to be the #1, and is feeling the pressure with the established Caulder returning.

                              Scouting:

C Patrick Seaver (W. New Mexico) got some positive buzz from Raiders' scouts after they checked his injury history. "You have to pretty much drop a bomb on him, or the stadium, to keep him out. The man has never missed a game in his career, going back to varsity," one scout spoke.

RT Anthony Gullary from W. Michigan might have his stock drop after the team didn't like how he moved his feet when watching his game last week. "Stiff and unnatural. That's what I wrote down. I just don't see it. I know he's big and supposedly is super strong, but can he pass block? Can he stay with the athletes off the edge?" a team scout commented.

Projected first-rounder Auburn's WR Blake Hall cursed his luck as scouts watched him drop six balls in a game. "They would come to see me have my worst game of the year. I just want to assure them that wasn't the real me. The real Blake Hall will play from now on, so come watch again, " Hall spoke.

                              Notable Progression:

I'm curious, why are you improving your awareness rating of your quarterbacks. I didn't think that helped anything.
