Re: Rebuilding the Fear - Oakland Raiders M13 CCM

    Raiders Get By In O.T.
Rivals Duel For 73 Minutes As Raiders
    Outlast Broncos 16-13.

The Raiders and Broncos put up a strong effort as both teams played determined football.

The Raiders got the running game going more as Caulder looked just fine, but the offense couldn't seal the deal and put points on the board. One red zone trip was snuffed out by Schumacher's only terrible pass, trying to force the ball to Moore in the end zone. The rest of the time, the Broncos tended to stiffen when they needed to.

The Raiders defense was equally strong. Davarius Bullock played like his hair was on fire, picking up 8 tackles in the first half alone. He only ended up with 10 as the Broncos avoided him for the rest of the game. However, Bobby Wagner was there with 10 tackles of his own.

The offense scored its lone touchdown on a long bomb to Moore. Schumacher put his arm into a pass and put it high and out there for Moore to have a chance to outrun Brent Grimes to the spot. Moore did so with a couple steps separation and was able to get into the end zone.

A FG drive before the half was keyed by a fantastic effort by Justin Blackmon on a long pass. He made a one-handed grab and maintained possession for the big play.

Blackmon's effort put the Raiders in range for a FG to
go up 10-6 as time expired in the first half.

On the Broncos' side, they were in much the same boat. They could move the ball somewhat, but had a QB turnover, a Freeman pass that was hurried and picked off by Peterson, and couldn't get into scoring range. They did manage a couple FG.

The Raiders held the ball for a long part of the third quarter, but managed just 3 points. They led 13-6.

That looked like it would be the final score, but Josh Freeman worked a 2-minute drive amid heavy pressure and Manningham got free for one of his two catches against Brandon Madison, and it went for the tying touchdown.

The Raiders had a chance to lead a game-winning drive, but a sack had the team settle for overtime instead of taking a risk on a crucial turnover.

Broncos got the ball first, but couldn't make anything happen. The Raiders moved the ball some, but, like much of the day, couldn't get into scoring range.

A similar result occurred for the first half of the overtime period. The Raiders got the ball back and were able to get Schumacher back in rhythm. He hit Blackmon and Rice for a couple plays to get things going. He found Chris Johnson on an outlet pass for another first down. A few runs were mixed in with Caulder that had success, and they also set up the big play of the drive on a crossing route to Moore. The play fake let Moore get a step or two and Schumacher hit him for a big completion. That put the Raiders well withing Janikowski's range, and they wasted no time on the FG attempt.

Janikowski split the uprights from 30 yards out to give the Raiders the victory.

In the game, Rolando McClain got a sack acting as RE in a 2-4-5 set. This prompted one sportswriter to comment after the game, "The whole 3-4/4-3 fiasco might be solved by sticking Rolando at defensive end. Walters could play at DT. Dawn might be out of a spot, but he could learn or sub in or something."

One thing is certain, the team doesn't seem to need him in the middle. Bobby Wagner had his most impressive game as a starter, and if Bullock keeps playing like he does - the defense needs to get both of them on the field.

Meanwhile, the Raiders are heading to the AFC Championship Game.

Re: Rebuilding the Fear - Oakland Raiders M13 CCM

Conference Championship Weekend - Midweek News

      NFL News:

Frank Gore scores 2 TDs for the 49ers to help them upset the Panthers.

Matt Cassel put up an exceptional performance, evidenced by his 142 QB rating in a win over the Eagles.

Maurice Jones-Drew racked up 162 yards in his team's victory.

      Divisional Round Scores:

      Jaguars def. Jets 34-16
Terry Carter faltered for the Jets, and that combined with Ryan and MJD on fire left the Jets with no chance.

      Vikings def. Eagles 38-21
Andrew Luck struggled, throwing 3 INTs to offset his 2 TDs and wasting a great effort by Shane Vereen, who ran for 129 yds and a TD on 14 carries. Peterson and Jones did their damage as receivers to lead the Vikings' attack.

      Raiders def. Broncos 16-13 (OT)
Raiders had enough and the defense held on in a tough defensive duel that needed overtime to settle. Raiders run game was a key, setting up the big plays Schumacher did generate.

      49ers def. Panthers 48-35
This figured to be high scoring if the 49ers were to have a chance, and it was - and they did. Newton's FIVE touchdowns went for naught as the 49ers racked up a whopping 293 yards on the ground between Gore (16 for 227, 2 TD) and Royster (19 for 66, 2 TD).

      Conference Championship Matchups:

      Jaguars (11-5) @ Raiders (12-3-1)
Raiders are next on MJD's list as he will try to overcome a defense that has had it's weak moments against the run, but has been solid for the last few weeks. Meanwhile, the Raiders hope to produce a solid rushing attack of its own to set up big plays off play action.

      49ers (9-7) @ Vikings (11-5)
The 49ers refuse to die. The weakest NFC playoff team, by record, is still alive and kicking as they defy the odds. The Vikings offense is hot, but the 49ers just overcame the best offense in the league this year to get to this point. Gore vs Peterson could be the key to the game, but Cassel showed that he can exploit teams that sleep on his arm.

      Raiders News

The team will look to produce some more offense in their game against Jacksonville, but they'll need to make sure the defense is unified up front. The LBs shined as a group last week, picking up a combined 30 tackles, highlighted by Wagner and Bullock with 10 each.

The DBs need to be on the ball as well since Matt Ryan will be at QB, and they'll take some help from the pass rush if they can get it.

      Injury Report:

      Raiders Injury Report
      PosPlayerInjury Note
      CBShaquille CarillonOut 3 weeks (abs)
      TEKarl KrugerIR (chest)
      CSergey WainwrightIR (fibula)
      WRBryan MillsIR (chest)

The Raiders will need to make do without Shaquille Carillon. He picked up an abdominal tear last week, and will likely miss the rest of the playoffs. Paris Cooper is likely to step in, and he's been disappointing in coverage all year long.

      Roster News:

Other than Cooper stepping into the nickle corner slot, no roster or depth changes from last week are expected.

        Patrick Peterson Saves the Day
102-yd Kick Return Gives Raiders the
Lead and Defense Holds. Raiders Back to
        Super Bowl, Win 23-19

"They find a way. It just always seems that someone is going to make a play, " a local sportscaster commented.

This time, it was Patrick Peterson on special teams. He nearly broke one earlier in the game, and in the 4th quarter, he did break one, his first as a Raider, to give his team the winning score.

And it was a good thing, too, because the offense just gave the ball away. That side of the ball gave up four turnovers, three on Schumacher interceptions - all in the first half, although one got wiped away on a strange play and ruling by the scorer despite the Jags retaining possession. Luckily for the Raiders, their defense was on the ball and generated four takeaways and pounded Maurice Jones-Drew into submission. Literally, as he was injured twice and left the game for good after 3 fumbles and those two injuries.

Also fortunate for the Raiders was Julio Caulder having another strong day. He picked up 112 yards on 19 carries. Charles Johnson was the let down, picking up just 19 yards and fumbling twice, the last of which gave the Jaguars a chance to win.

The Raiders were looking to run down the clock, but Johnson got hit by Posluzny to knock the ball out. Jim Leonhard recovered the fumble and that put the Jags back in the game.

Ryan still had to deal with the pass rush. Paris Cooper was the sack generator, grabbing two on corner blitzes. However, Ryan beat a blitz to find Zack Miller going deep down the middle. If the throw could have been a little better, Miller would have caught the ball in stride. As it was, he was touched down at the Raiders' 25 yard line.

On first down, the coverage was tight and Ryan just threw it away. Second down was the second of Cooper's two sacks. Ryan was forced to spike the ball on third and long, bringing up 4th and long. The coverage again held and that turned the ball over on downs to save the win.

The Jags got the lead on a nice drive that ended with a toss to John Kuhn. The fullback powered through a Steven Barker tackle attempt to get into the end zone.

Mr. 3-4-*****(seriously...that's censored?), Rolando McClain got his second sack in two games out of the 3-4, grasping Ryan as he tried to step up in the pocket. Jake Olsen and Bobby Wagner combined for 16 tackles up the middle. Bullock wasn't as big a factor in this one, but he did recover a fumble on special teams.

Brandon Madison showed why he's avoided by QBs. He was thrown at one time as Ryan thought he was beat, and he picked off the pass.

Schumacher continues to struggle for too much of the game. His critics are calling for someone to at least push the young QB, perhaps thinking he is relaxing a bit with Colt McCoy and Brock Osweiler behind him, knowing that they are not going to start, barring injury.

Regardless, he is taking the team back to the Super Bowl, and, for now, that's all the team is focusing on, finishing their title defense and becoming repeat champions.

Super Bowl Week - Midweek News

          NCAA Football News:

QB Danny Martens was presented to teams just in front of the scouting combine. His coach reportedly made his case to several front offices.

Idaho DE Kooper Cosbert picked up three sacks at the Senior Bowl.

Texas CB Arik Casher was burned over the second half of the season, according to some sources. Scouts have soured on the young corner as consensus has him slotted at the 3rd round.

          NFL News:

          Conference Championship Scores:

          Raiders def. Jaguars 23-19
          Vikings def. 49ers 9-6

          Super Bowl Matchup

          Raiders (12-3-1) vs Vikings (11-5)

The first thing that jumps out about this matchup is Adrian Peterson vs the Raiders run defense. This defense shut down Maurice Jones-Drew, but Peterson is a different animal than any other HB in the league. It's going to be tough to stop Peterson without selling out for penetration, but doing so might put the defense in even more of a bind.

It also brings up the question: What will the Raiders do against a 3 or 4 WR formation? Do they stay base in case it's a run, putting the LBs on the line for coverage, or go to nickle, and hope it's not a run? The linebackers are not terrible in coverage, though it's not their strong point, especially man coverage.

Matt Cassel is a familiar face, but Harvin, Maclin and Jaquante Wright are better than the WRs the Chiefs ever mustered the last couple years. Dustin Keller has the skills to be a pain in the pass game, and the Raiders just gave up over 100 yards to Zach Miller.

The Raiders offense gets to see big Vince Wilfork again. If both he and Jared Allen get going, Schumacher might have (even more) issues. Adrian McGruder also makes an appearance, but he still seems on the raw side. If Schumacher can stay calm, he might can attack a not-that-great secondary - but can he stay calm if Allen and Greenway are getting to him consistently?

Should be an interesting game. Julio Caulder will need to attack and get the Raiders run game going in case it becomes a running backs duel.

                Schumacher, Offense Crack
                Turnovers, Peterson Give Victory to
                Vikings. Raiders Fall 38-17

This game was a tight battle until the 4th quarter. Adrian Peterson did what he's capable off, giving the Raiders linebackers fits all game long. Even then, they had kept the game within reach.

Denarius Moore was the go-to guy, which is not unusual. He collected Schumacher's 2 TD passes. Schumacher was keeping himself composed and patient, and the offensive line was giving him decent protection.

Julio Caulder went down with an injury, picking up turf toe. Taukei Griggs got the call and had to get the running game going. He did a pretty good job, and was a big part of a key 3rd quarter drive to start the half. That got the Raiders back into the game.

The energized defense shut down Peterson and the Vikings in the 3rd quarter. Allowing the Raiders to creep closer, making it 21-17, Vikings, after three.

However, Schumacher's cracks started showing, and the other offensive players were trying to do too much. Sidney Rice gave up the first mistake on a Jared Allen hit. Kyle Arrington recovered the fumble. This lead to a 16-yd Peterson run.

The Raiders then couldn't do anything with their next possession as Schumacher was losing that protection he was getting earlier. Jared Allen was in on a lot of it as he got going in the second half.

The Vikings got a FG before Schumacher threw his second interception, this one to Chad Greenway, who returned it the distance for a touchdown. That was the killing blow and the Raiders made it all the way to the Super Bowl, but the title defense fell there.

Adrian Peterson was the star on offense, picking up 238 yards on 32 carries and 2 TDs. He neutered the heart of the Raiders defense and the driving force behind many of the team's big plays. All Cassel had to do was not screw it up, and he didn't, converting two touchdowns and avoiding the interception.

"It's a disappointing ending, of course. We get this far, feel good, and get smacked in the mouth. This is something to learn from heading into the offseason. I'm proud of the guys, but this will feel bitter for a while, especially the way we fell apart in the last 15 minutes, " Coach Lyle spoke to reporters after the game.

The offensive weaknesses bit the team. They survived many of the mistakes throughout the regular season and even in the postseason, but running up against the potent running attack, and giving that attack +3 in turnovers was just too much. There might be some changes in the offensive side, maybe even starting with quarterback.

Well, Ponder's a FA (and not rated any better, though he's of course far younger), and Joe Webb is gone entirely (was with Bucs last year, guess he retired).

He's only on a one year deal. They'll probably go with Jack Kane (draft prospect), who's not a lot better either. They have B.J. Coleman - some guy I never heard of but isn't a draftee since he's older than the CCM. Cannon arm but trash accuracies.

Since they won it all, they'll have the last pick, too, so I don't know who they'll get.

Why they didn't get one of Luck/RG3/Wilson, I don't know. Maybe they just got outbid, I don't remember.

Yeah, AP was insane. When we couldn't force Cassel into mistakes, I had a feeling we were screwed.

Hate seeing it end like that after a great season. Peterson is such a beast.

Can't wait to find out what happens with McClain and Schu….and to see if Greg Jones finally gets released

                          2016 Offseason Begins

The Raiders have question marks heading into this offseason. There's the McClain drama, with conflicting rumors of everything from a Suh-McClain fight to the linebacker waffling on his holdout threat.

Then there's Schumacher, the embattled QB that looked like he was going to prove critics wrong...until he continued to make their case for them. If the team is seeking a QB, either via draft or free agency (or trade involving McClain?), is this just a 'solid backup' that could be worth starting, or one that is looking for the starting job and creates a preseason battle?

How will the Raiders address the offense? It is clear that, the inability to stop Peterson aside, the offense is what brought defeat in the Super Bowl...and near enough defeat during the regular season. Is it the QB or the wideouts? Was it the injury to Kruger, who was emerging as a reliable target, or the inability of the receivers to stay healthy? And, regardless of the answer - what's the Raiders action?

If the 3-4 is here to stay, what happens with Immanuel Dawn? Is Lamarr Houston trade bait now with the pass rush shifted from him to Bullock on the left side? Is Suh on the way out, especially, if true, a confrontation with McClain?

The offseason has arrived, and it's time to see the answers for the Raiders and the rest of the league.

P Shane Lechler has (apparently) retired as he's not in the FA pool.

LB Rolando McClain, DE Lamarr Houston, LT Jared Veldheer, and CB Paris Cooper have been placed on the trade block.

                              Scouting:

Oklahoma LT Zac Foster might be targeted by the team, especially if they do find a suitor for Veldheer. He would need work on his pass blocking, but he's got everything else the team looks for in an offensive linemen, solid explosiveness off the snap, size and strength (6' 7", 334 lb, elite playing strength), and not shy about laying out defenders down field. At a second round projection, he's in reach of the team's 1st round pick.

Michigan St. MLB Christain Shepherd is probably too interesting for the team to pass up. He's a fast, very fast linebacker, a lot in the mold of Bobby Wagner, whom the team re-signed. Not much strength, which might be the first thing he needs to work on, but is decent elsewhere. Not an instant starter, but maybe worth having around to develop.

The team my want to wait for Ohio State's Earl Williams. He's more along the prototype of the team - pure power tackler with enough workable skill elsewhere to take the field and develop further. Williams is a 5th round projection, so much easier...and less risky, for the team to consider, even if they need to reach a bit.

WR Akia Green (Utah) continues to look interesting to the team, especially in this class of wideouts. The Combine confirmed his raw speed and athleticism, and shows that there's some work to do about his ball skills, but overall, he's someone who could start day 1. He might push Sidney Rice to #4 if the team is able to select him.

WR Jalen Williams (Rutgers) might be worth looking at, though he's much more of a project player. If Green gets chosen earlier than expected, this might be where the team goes.

TE Adrian Jackson (Northwestern) might be a worthwhile choice if the team can't grab a #2 TE from free agency. He looks like a solid receiver, but like most of these TEs, he is not going to be very helpful in blocking.

Butler QB Danny Martens is a 7th round projection for a reason, he's got an...odd...mix of skills. He's not the least bit mobile, but throws well on the run. He's most accurate on the deep pass, but can't throw an intermediate route reliably, and will need time to learn the playbook and get use to the speed of the NFL game. Still, he executes play action very well and played in a power run scheme. Since Austin Duncan and Jordan Norwell are expected to go highly, Martens might be a flier worth taking if the team can't, or won't, trade up.

Its funny that 3 of the guys you've mentioned I drafted in this draft. We must look for the same set of skills when evaluating players.
