    For me, not really.

In M12, I played for 12 seasons with a team that was good, at least, for most of them.

Different players, changes around the league, etc. As long as the games are competitive, things will stay interesting.

          Steady Offense Does Enough
          Schumacher in Rhythm and Defense
Stands in Final Minutes to Win 26-20

The Raiders hope that Schumacher can watch this film and bottle this game because this might have been the best game played by the young QB in terms of overall performance and consistency.

He didn't run up a bunch of yards, just 175 of them, but he throw 2 TDs, no interceptions and completed 81% of his passes.

"I just felt good today. The game seemed to slow down for me, and I was able to hit most of my throws, " Schumacher commented.

The running game was improved, though still not where the team would like it. Caulder's return helped, and he put up 4 yards per carry, something you can almost just mark him down for each game. Not a grand day for him either, but he did get a score and 98 yards. He also picked up one of the receiving touchdowns.

The Broncos' Josh Freeman wasn't as consistent in the face of what's become a very aggressively called defense. However, that aggression broke down in the 2nd quarter, one that saw the Broncos roll up 17 points. After that, however, the Raiders' aggression shook up the passing attack.

Late in the fourth, the Broncos picked up a field goal with less than 1 minute remaining to make the score 26-20. The Broncos went for the onside kick, since they had just one timeout, and Justin Blackmon could not recover it, but the Broncos did.

Freeman moved the ball for a couple first downs and ended up using the last time out with 20 seconds left. On 3rd down, Torrey Smith nearly became a hero with the winning catch. He went up for the pass and grabbed it, but Brandon Madison shoved him out of bounds before the feet got down.

On the next pass, again to Torrey Smith, Madison attacked the pass and picked it off to seal the game.

The run defense is still a little hit or miss, perhaps the switch to the 3-4 being the cause. While not bad by any means, the Broncos picked up the same 98 yards on 24 carries between their two halfbacks. Pierre Thomas, the starter, was knocked out of the game by Suh, and Tim Hightower did fare a bit better, which is the concerning part. Hightower put 4.6 yards per carry.

There is some concern about McClain not being able to make as many plays since there's only 3 men on the line. The fact Suh has to play at the end doesn't help matters any. That said, overall, the run defense did enough.

Takuei Griggs did not do enough. He got 10 carries and picked up just 18 yards, another poor day for him. Chris Johnson only had a handful of carries, and that may well change next week.

Defensively, Davarius Bullock is loving the aggressive scheme. He picked up 3 of the team's four sacks - the other going to Paris Cooper, which led to a safety.

The Broncos were also aggressive with their linebackers, and Von Miller was a big beneficiary of it. He picked up 12 tackles and 2 sacks on the day. Mason Foster picked up 10.

McClain had 10 tackles, many of them coming on the underneath passes Freeman was trying to hit to beat the pressure.

Re: Rebuilding the Fear - Oakland Raiders M13 CCM

            Week 3 - Midweek News

            NCAA Football:

Arizona's Willie Burns, a defender who can play both OLB and DE, is a pass rusher that scouts will be watching all year long.

            NFL News:

49ers can't come to terms with DE Ray McDonald.

DE Charles Johnson has rejected the Panthers' latest offer.

Alvaro McClain of the Titans turns down the extension offer presented to him.

DT Mike Patterson extends with the Falcons for 5 years, $25.5 M.

            Raiders News:

NFL Standings - Updated: Week 3
            AFC WESTWLT
            Raiders101
            Chiefs110
            Broncos110
            Chargers011

Raiders are in first by a half game after defeating the Broncos last week and having the Chiefs and Chargers lose as well.

            Next Game:

            Raiders (1-0-1) @ Cardinals (1-1)

Raiders will get to face Kurt Warner this week, so hopefully the pass rush will be active.

            Transactions:

            K Sebastian Janikowski agreed to a 2-year, $4.0 M extension

P Shane Lechler rejected the 2-year extension offer worth about $4 M.

            SS Tyvon Branch rejected a 4-year, $28.4 M extension

LG Cale Welch agreed to a 4-year extension worth about $24 M.

"He told me, if it's close, take it. That's how much he loves playing for his organization, " Welch's agent spoke.

MLB Jake Olsen also agreed to the 4-year extension presented to him, worth about $17 M.

            Injury Report:

TE Karl Kruger suffered a minor abdominal tear. While not serious, the injury will have him miss this week's game.

WR Bryan Mills suffered some broken ribs during a punt return and will miss 3 weeks.

            Roster News:

According to sources, the team will remain in the 3-4 alignment for this week's game despite the possibility that it may be decreasing McClain's ability to make plays in the running game.

The offensive line held a player's only meeting to try to address the issues stopping them from playing as a unit effectively.

"We've been having problems since preseason, and it's time to get this **** together, " Aaryn DePriest commented.

Takuei Griggs will get 'one last chance' to show he can be a solid #2 right now. Otherwise, he might fall all the way to #4, making way for Grant and Johnson to vie for the slot.

            Scouting:

DE Willie Burns (Arizona) does seem to live up to the hype in regards to pass rushing. Finesse moves look to be his weapon of choice, but he doesn't seem worth top 10 billing..."he doesn't tackle, doesn't hit particularly hard, and while not slow, he's not blazing fast either. Not seeing it, " one scout spoke.

DE Demontray Hopkins (Auburn) - "Any kid with a name as cool as 'Demontray' deserves a look, " one scout commented, "Too bad his skills are as fun to watch as his name is to say." Indeed, the early grades on Hopkins do not look impressive.

DE Kooper Cosbert (Idaho) has grabbed a few looks from scouts. The reports are that he is very, very strong, shoving people aside whenever he gets to play...and that's the issue. He's not being given much a chance by his college team, and being 26 years old is a red flag in itself. "Brandon Weeden paved the way for these 'older rookies', but he's still a questionmark my mind - like Weeden, " one scout spoke.

Enamored by the prospect of a decent free safety rookie, team scouts took time to watch Lamel Seawood during practice to get an idea on some of his measurables and watch him hit during games. Speed is an area scouts became confident on, grading him at a solid 93. They were not disappointed at the ferocity of his hits either, also grading him a 93, especially after putting one WR out of the game for a few plays.

Early looks at LT Kris Scavone quickly show off his strength. At 6' 6", 310 lbs, he gets his hands on defenders quickly and has a very strong lower body. Not much else is known at this time, though he will likely get more looks as time progresses.

            Notable Progression:

            CB Paris Cooper
            MCV: 86 to 87

            LB Tevin Ash
            POW: 83 to 84

            SS Tyvon Branch
            POW: 81 to 82

            DT Ndamukong Suh
            FMV: 73 to 74

            TE Karl Kruger
            RBK: 62 to 63

            CB Brandon Madison
            AWR: 66 to 67

This guy is really good. Just a solid football player. Probably my favorite guy I've drafted. Ratings aren't through the roof but he plays really good. That's why you play the game lol. Great value as well.

                  Raiders Outhit, Outrun Cardinals
Physical 4th Quarter on Both Sides
Comes Out on Raiders' Favor, Win 27-22

The Raiders knew they had to keep some kind of constraint on Kurt Warner. Initially, the team tried to play coverage and hope for a pass rush, but that started to fade pretty quickly. Warner's passes were difficult to stop, and at one point completed 8 in a row, and 13 of 15.

The Raiders, though, were able to keep him from throwing a TD pass, but the constant first downs kept the Cardinals moving, and they picked up a rushing touchdown in the second quarter from LeGarrette Blount.

On the Raiders' side, Schumacher wasn't able to duplicate his excellent game last week, this time struggling to find his targets on the road. He also faced a solid pass rush that made him hurry some throws and on others, the clock in his head speed up too fast, forcing errant passes even with no pressure around him.

But the story of the game was the running games on both sides. Blount didn't have an astounding day, but he kept the Cardinals on schedule and powered ahead for some physical runs. He also picked up two rushing touchdowns on the day, one of which after McClain broke his thumb trying to get physical with Blount.

Julio Caulder, though, had one of those dominating days. He picked up 143 yards on the ground and matched Blount's 2 touchdowns. As per usual, many of Caulder's runs weren't awe inspiring, but he was just tough to bring down. Aiding the cause was a day that made people remember why the team was high on Takuei Griggs. Whether it was the Cardinals' defense or the threat of hitting the bottom of the depth chart, Griggs picked up 63 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries.

It was a good thing the run game showed up because the coverage was doing little more than tackling complete passes. Warner came up just short of 300 yards passing on the day and completed 61% of his passes. Stephen Hill was all Brandon Madison could handle. Hill beat Madison for a 50 yard play to cap his 97 yards on the day. Kellen Davis was the other big target, leading the Cardinals in receptions and picking up 81 yards.

In the fourth quarter, though, it came down to big hits. The Raiders got the first one with Jake Olsen causing a fumble (and then having to leave the game) on a kick return. Then the Cardinals nearly had a takeaway on the ensuing Raiders drive, but the both overturned the would-be Griggs fumble. Griggs was also involved in another booth review, this time over a potential touchdown.

You make the call. Is this a touchdown?

The booth reviewed the play and ruled that Griggs' knee was down before he stretched the ball into the end zone. The next play, Griggs left no doubt about the score, plowing through the Cardinals' rookie Leo Granger in the process.

The next kickoff and this time Davarius Bullock knocked the ball out on the return. LB Bobby Wagner recovered this one (and the last one). The Raiders picked up a field goal to make it 27-16.

Then LaGarrette Blount went back to work. He mixed his power running with the passes of Warner, still on target despite the cranked up blitz pressure the team was now putting on him. Warner was able to find his outlet receivers most of the time, or work Kellen Davis against a linebacker or against Tyvon Branch.

The Cardinals got inside the Raiders' 5-yard line, and Blount took the run off-tackle and pretty much walked into the end zone. McClain was out of the game at this point and he may have been able to make a play. Regardless, the score was now 27-22, Raiders. Wagner came through with another play, stopping the two point conversion.

Raiders got the ball with over 3 minutes left and ran the clock down to the two minute warning. However, first play after the two minute timeout, former Raider Mike Mitchell laid a shot right on the ball as Caulder was fighting for yardage, and the ball popped loose. The Cardinals scooped the fumble, giving themselves another chance with a timeout in their pocket as well.

Warner started marching his team down the field, starting it off with a 10-yard run from Blount. Warner stood strong in the face of continual heavy 5 and 6 man blitz packages, picking up first downs. The Cardinals crossed midfield and were looking in strong shape, but the K.J. Wright dealt a blow to Blount and he knocked the ball out. The Raiders recovered to stop the threat. This time, Caulder held on to the ball and the Raiders were able to run out the clock with the power back breaking his long run of the day for 27 yards.

Nevada QB Austin Duncan is considered just a mid-round prospect at this point.

                    NFL News:

Rams could not extend WR Clifton Faulk, and will return to the negotiation table.

The Raiders are one 4 unbeaten teams remaining in the league.

                    Next Game: Raiders (2-0-1) @ Chiefs (1-2-0)

Raiders head to Arrowhead, always a tough place to play. Chiefs have struggled on offense so far, ranking 30th, but feature a top 10 defense thus far.

                    Transactions:

Things are getting chaotic on the contract front. The first round of rookies are all looking for their first 'real' contracts, not to mention a few veterans as well. Welch and Olsen are already taken care of. Next up are Caulder, Ash, Carillon, and Cooper. Veterans Jeff Otah and Matt Shaughnessy are also asking about their contracts, and the team has not agreed to terms with Tyvon Branch or Shane Lechler.

                    Injury Report:

On top of the contract situation, the training room is filling up, unfortunately.

MLB Rolando McClain will miss 4 weeks with a broken thumb. Initially, the injury didn't look serious, but MRIs during the week reveal more damage than expected.

MLB Jake Olsen will miss this week's game against the Chiefs with a minor shoulder tear. He tried to work through it, but had to miss practice and was only a limited participant on Tuesday, so the team listed him on the injury report as OUT for this week.

C Sergey Wainwright suffered the most devastating news. The promising young offensive lineman had his fibula snapped during last weeks game, landing awkwardly and then his leg got caught on the bottom of a pile. He will miss the rest of the season and has been placed on injured reserve.

TE Karl Kruger and WR Fabian Favors have recovered. Still, that leaves 6 Raiders out.

                    Roster News:

The team signed C Daniel Kilgore to replace Sergey Wainwright.

With two of it's key linebackers out of action, the Raiders will revert back to the 4-3 for at least next week's game, if not until Rolando McClain returns. Rookie Davarius Bullock will move to the middle linebacker spot. Bobby Wagner takes the right side and K.J. Wright will take over the left side.

HB Takuei Griggs will be #2 again on the back of last week's performance.

WR Jacoby Ford is placed on kick and punt returns.

                    Notable Progression:

                    HB Julio Caulder
                    BCV: 86 to 87
                    AWR: 84 to 85

                    LB Davarius Bullock
                    TAK: 84 to 86

                    FB Marcel Reece
                    PBK: 79 to 81

                    CB Paris Cooper
                    CTH: 53 to 54

                    FS Steven Barker
                    PRC: 77 to 78
                    ZCV: 73 to 74

Tough loss with McClain going down. That is pretty cool that Warner signed with Arizona.

You got a lot of big contract to deal with this season. How long does McClain have left on his deal? You may have mentioned it already but I must have missed it.

                        No Answer for Charles
                        McClain-Less Run Defense Destroyed as
                        Chiefs Run Over Raiders 29-17

If this is what the Raiders can look forward to for the next 3 games, the squad might be a bit of trouble in the first half of the season.

If there were any doubts that the run defense could survive the loss of McClain, those doubts were confirmed with this game. No matter what the defensive coordinator tried, Jamaal Charles just could not be stopped with any regularity.

Most will point their fingers at rookie Davarius Bullock and his being placed at the middle linebacker spot, but he lead the team in tackles with 9 and was making an effort. Instead, Suh was a non-factor in this one, clearly not at his best at the defensive end position, and the outside linebackers did very little as well.

The breakdown in the tackles is telling. After Bullock, there are three members of the secondary, Cooper, Barker, and Branch. Wagner, the ROLB, shows up after Cooper, and Wright, the LOLB, made just 3 tackles.

One local commentator spoke, "Looks like without McClain to pressure the A and B gaps, the outside linebackers can't get come from the edge or flow inside to help make stops. Makes me wonder how many more tackles McClain actually makes happen for the outside guys than the 150 tackles he personally gets every year."

Offensively, Caulder was a force as the Raiders offensive line tried to match intensity, but the Chiefs linebackers made a difference. Justin Houston picked up 11 tackles where Derrick Johnson had 8.

Caulder reached 100 yards on just 18 carries and scored a touchdown, the only offensive score on the day. Griggs and Johnson only got 5 carries between them on the day but they combined for 26 yards, 5 yards per carry.

Wade Schumacher was again off-target, showing his excellent game to be more a fluke than a sign of maturation from the quarterback. Once again, the critics are starting to sound off about Schumacher. He's avoiding mistakes, though he did throw one interception late trying to get the Raiders down the field quickly, but overall, was not terrible and completed 64% of his passes.

But one things is certain, this team still is not a prolific offense. If they can't get the opportunity to run the ball heavily and set up the pass off of it, there have been issues overall in the offense.

Tyvon Branch provided one of the few positives on defense, grabbing a pick-6 in the 3rd quarter to get the Raiders close. His play made it 20-17 at the time. However, the run defense failed to keep the building momentum going and the Chiefs put it away in the 4th quarter.

"It was disgraceful. I don't care about injuries, we had no pride as a defense. I know Charles is a top-notch running back, but we are, or at least are supposed to be, a top-notch run defense. Perhaps, we're just a 'McClain defense' after all instead of a true run stopping unit. If that rubs some of the guys the wrong way - good. Maybe they'll play better or just get out of the way, and let us can find guys who will play better, " Lyle spoke.

It will be interesting to see how the defense responds going forward. The team has been hit with the opposing run game before, and usually find adjustments - but they always had McClain there, too.

No new NCAA Football news this week.

                            NFL News:

QB Mark Mallet rejected the Texans' offer.

The Vikings are stunning the league with their 4-0 start.

Larry Fitzgerald passed Tim Brown on the all-time receiving yards list.

Adrian Peterson is now 7th on the all-time rushing yardage list.

Division is tight...and unimpressive. Raiders give one up to their rivals while the Chargers win to tie for the lead. Vikings and Jaguars are the lone unbeaten teams now.

Madden has the Chiefs in 1st place with the Broncos in last - not sure how 2-1-1 is lower than 2-2, though...

Raiders get LB Jake Olsen back, but lose DE Lamarr Houston for 4 weeks with a torn bicep. Both starting defensive ends are now on the mend.

CBs Paris Cooper and Shaquille Carillon were given extension offers according to each players' agents.

The teams is still considering whether to talk more with Tyvon Branch. This is probably the hardest decision in that Branch is up and down in his play and his salary demands are on the high side...on the other hand, there are very few quality safeties out there and not many have come through the draft it seems.

Back up defensive ends Matt Shaughnessy and Quinterrius Fields are looking for extensions, but the priority is low - and probably non-existent in Fields' case.

RT Jeff Otah is another decision to make. He's good in run blocking but terrible in pass blocking. It's likely that the team will let him walk and either look to the draft or free agency for a new tackle.

                            Roster News:

Ndamukong Suh will move back to the interior line as he's clearly been out of sorts working on the edge. The team will try rookie Immanuel Dawn on the LDE while Matt Shaughnessy will likely see some time on the RDE spot.

The team will stay with the 4-3 and place Jake Olsen in the middle linebacker slot. Bullock returns to the LOLB position and Tevin Ash will get the ROLB spot with some playing time given to K.J. Wright there as well.

                            Scouting:

Perhaps even Lyle is starting to wonder about his young Schumacher. The team has started scouting QBs again, focusing on Nevada's Austin Duncan. Reports have been that Duncan may not stand out in any area, but he is solid all-around, including throwing on the run and selling the play action.

SS Maurice Peters (Baylor) looks to have higher-end speed and some physical presence. He has some ability to diagnose plays and doesn't fall for too much deception, but he needs work on trusting his instincts and react with more decisiveness on the field. Overall, he'd be a work-in-progress, but it is a possible option should Tyvon Branch be allowed to pursue free agency.

WR Jon McCoy (Houston) garnered interest among scouts because of his size (6' 5") and is ability to use that size to make great catches. He displayed good timing when leaping for passes - able to muster a strong vertical reach even while on the move. He's currently listed at a low 5th round projection, so he could be a nice low-risk pick come draft time.

                            Notable Progression:

                            SS Tyvon Branch
                            POW: 85 to 86

                            WR Denarius Moore
                            RTE: 86 to 87

                            TE Karl Kruger
                            CIT: 75 to 76
                            RBK: 63 to 64

If your looking for a new qb draft Danny Martens, a 5th round prospect. His storyline happens towards the end of the season.

Your next draft class is stocked with talent at all levels. Have fun with this one Are you looking for any type of Red zone threat receivers, like someone 6'5 or so that can go and get the ball with solid developmental skills? Maybe scout WR Bryan Henry. He's not the fastest, but he's a solid guy to have when you're driving down the field. I think he's projected at the 3rd round or so.

I've got several players from this draft that are starting on my team, or are major contributors. Every position is represented well.
