    Week 15 - Midweek News

Browns HB Trent Richardson is expected to play this week.

WR Corey McCants was seen at Raiders practice, and is expected to be active this week.

    Awards:
NFC DPoW: Cardinals CB Corey Flemming
AFC DPoW: Raiders CB Brandon Madison
NFC OPoW: Bears HB Matt Forte
AFC OPoW: Texans HB Arian Foster

The performances of QB Colt McCoy (3 TD), WR Denarius Moore (150 yds, 2 TD) and Brandon Madison (2 sacks, 1 INT) are being tweeted and reported about in game highlights this week.

Texans QB Mark Mallet shredded the Colts' defense, nearly posting a perfect passer rating.

Carolina WR Steve Smith is now 9th all-time in receiving yards.

Raiders LB Jason Worilds is expected to miss a few weeks with a partial PCL tear.

    Raiders News:

    Notable Progression:

    HB Julio Caulder:
    CAR: 81 to 83

    C Stefen Wisniewski:
    STA: 86 to 88

    LT Jared Veldheer:
    STA: 86 to 87

    CB Brandon Madison:
    AWR: 42 to 44

    CB Paris Cooper:
    MCV: 85 to 86

    Roster News:

Mike Mitchell will move to FS while Brandon Madison is indeed going to start opposite of Shaquille Carillon. Tyvon Branch heads back to SS. This puts Paris Cooper as the nickle corner. He's not particularly happy, saying, "I know it's about the team and we're trying to put guys where they can win, but I just don't think I should be the one moved again. I was moved to safety last year, worked my way back to corner, and now I'm nickle and not starting. It's very frustrating."

There is also some rumbling in the depths of the WRs, perhaps the last batch of players who need to be saying anything. D'Andre Ware is "disappointed" in the lack of opportunity to showcase his skills. He was last overheard making a remark about "who uses just two receivers any more?" to another player, noting how only the top two WR see significant targets during a game in most cases.

The running backs seem to be the happiest quartet, especially between Grant and Caulder. When asked if there was any animosity between Caulder and himself, Grant responded, "Why would there be? We're both grinding up defenses, having success...the whole 'number 1', 'number 2' thing is just who comes in first and what formations you're in." Slaton has been happy to be 'wanted by a team again' after his surprise release by the Cowboys, and Taiwan Jones is aware he's shot himself in the foot frequently over the last couple seasons, saying, "I could be were Grant is, but I know this is a performance business. I'm still hear and Darren [McFadden], Chris [Ivory], and LaRod [Stepens-Howling] are not. I'm getting kick returns and Jacoby [Ford] is not, so somewhere, they do still want me around for now, and for that, I'm grateful."

He's alright, but his THP is very aggravating. Any intermediate route, his ball his weak velocity on it, and in Madden, that just gives them too much time to get that perfectly-timed hit.

its seems like maybe a few points up with his exp would do some real good for him. then when his arm is set work on his deep throw acccuracy and medium throw accuracy and he could be a very good QB. that what I did in my Browns CC and I got rid of Weeden by week three of the first regular season. I had Colt at an 80 ovr by season 2.

Well, it costs 14 K per point of THP for him. So 28 K just to get it to 83. He has 3,300 XP.

His DAC is 65, that's a long way to get it decent.

Good lord, why is it that just about every time we play the Chiefs there's like 10 injuries on each side...

Moore, Caulder out AGAIN with long term injuries. Ugh.

Re: Rebuilding the Fear - Oakland Raiders M13 CCM

              Raiders Squeeze Out Sloppy Win
Ugly 27-24 Win Comes With Heavy Toll,
              Caulder, Moore Out Again.

Colt McCoy looked like the fill-in he probably will be in this one. He threw 3 INTs and completed about 55% of his passes. He did battle back enough to lead the Raiders into FG range with under 10 seconds on the clock, and Janikowski came through.

McCoy's bad day was "helped" by the porous pass protection, as he was sacked 4 times and constantly hurried.

The big story, though, will be the status of both Moore and Caulder, two of the biggest weapons on the team. Tony Moeaki also came up injured in the game, but he was held out mostly for precautionary reasons and is not expected to miss any time.

"We don't have any information to pass along at this time, " coach Lyle spoke after the game, "I know the families and friends of Denarius and Julio are concerned, and we will release information once we have reasonable confidence in the severity of the injuries."

Both Moore and Caulder had to be carted off the field. They were secured in braces for safety reasons, and the team was quick to announce that it does not necessarily mean the players could not move or were unconscious.

On a positive note, Steven Grant passed the 1,000 yard mark on the season and picked up 116 yards on the ground in this game on 22 carries, a 5.3 average. He also caught four passes, including a touchdown.

The pass defense was much better, holding Cassel to just 130 yards on the day. He did throw 2 TDs, but also an interception to Shaquille Carillon, who turned it into a pick-six.

Elsewhere, Rolando McClain is still not looking quite himself, making some wonder if he's playing with an injury. He only picked up 6 tackles in this game. Tanner Bailey had his back, though, picking up 12 tackles and forcing 2 fumbles.

The run defense in general, though, was the problem today. Charles was knocked out of the game, and back up B.J. Graves played even better. Graves picked up 187 yards on 25 carries and scored a touchdown.

Lost in the concern about the injuries and sloppy play was the fact the Raiders won their 6th in a row. At 11-3, they figure to clinch at least a playoff berth at this point.

While the offense could keep going without their best weapons, the lack of protection is going to be an issue. The downside of short passes is that they are often 3-step drops. Even scrambling becomes difficult when multiple players are allowing rushers through.

Good job making the playoffs. It seems that the change in the secondary helped with pass defense, did it hurt against the run you think. Or was that a front 7 issue for this game?

Right now, I'm thinking front seven. McClain looked sluggish, Ash was disappointing. The DL wasn't doing much to occupy the blockers. If they penetrated, they could make some tackles, but otherwise, it was ugly.

I think that's one reason why Bailey racked up the tackles, he was the only one playing with some energy.

Getting Wilfork back should help. Kelly's solid, but the young defensive tackles aren't quite there yet, and neither are as good as Wilfork, even on a good day. One thing I do think is hurting is using DE Fields. Fields is basically a raw version of Freeney, complete with the ridiculous speed for a lineman (90!). Usually, I have Shaughnessy in, who's more like a mini Justin Smith. I went with Fields to try to get more pressure, but he's not as stout against the run and doesn't read the play/movement of the OL very well (lowish PRC).

                      From Sloppy to Flawless
                      Raiders Do Everything Right. Chargers
                      Routed 32-10.

If the Raiders needed an example of what their ideal game may need to look like, this one was a pretty good tape to keep.

The Raiders got everything going right out of the gate, playing with intensity and desire from the first whistle. Before some late-arriving fans found their seats, the Raiders had forced a turnover, Tanner Bailey forcing another fumble, this time against Ryan Matthews. The ball laid right there next to Bailey for the self-recovery. At first it looked as though the Chargers defense would be equally stout as the Raiders only got a field goal.

Next possession, another fumble. This time Rolando McClain, playing on the outside, knocked the ball out of Matthews. Bailey missed the recovery, but Olsen was there to pick up the ball for the Raiders. However, just another field goal.

The offense would then put an actual drive together, moving slowly down the field like a glacier slowly picking up momentum. Another FG, however, and for all the domination, the Raiders were up just 9-0. Rolando McClain had 5 tackles in the first quarter alone.

Rivers hit a big pass play and it looked like the Chargers would awaken. But McClain picked up a sack working from defensive end this time.

Meanwhile, the Raiders offense kept it's slow pace. Creeping the ball down the field, but keeping it moving. This time, the Raiders would pick up a touchdown. McCoy rolled out on 1st and goal from the 1-yard line as the Chargers came with middle pressure. Moeaki and McCoy were moving in the same direction, and the QB flipped the ball to the tight end for the easy touchdown.

The Chargers' offense just had nothing going on. Rivers might have had the most pizazz on the team with this demonstrations of frustration than the rest of the team put together. All the while, the Raiders just kept slowly pushing, staying on schedule, completing short throws, kicking a ton of FGs to keep the score moving as well.

In the second half, McCoy did some play action and found some success. With the Chargers tiring from being on the field, the Raiders tried a shot to the end zone to McCants, who looked as sharp as he ever has this season. The pass was put in a good spot and beat Weddle by a step for the touchdown. This was the "deepest" pass of the day, about 20 yards, not counting a catch and run by Steven Grant on a screen pass.

The Raiders featured a wide receiver screen to Cobb, which also had some success. That is what put them in position for the first TD. The rest of the points came from six Janikowski field goals.

The Chargers got a TD late on a run from Ronnie Brown on another deep pass from Rivers. The rest of the time, the secondary clamped down on the receivers. Rivers completed just 41% of his passes with no touchdowns and he threw an interception to ball magnet Brandon Madison, his 4th INT of the season.

Rolando McClain working both as DE and outside linebacker worked well. He got a lot of pressure on Rivers, narrowly missing a couple more sacks. However, the frequent pressure really made Rivers uncomfortable all day.

"I think we used him a bit much at the [defensive] end. I think we learned to sort of mix in when we put him there and when we use him in coverage as a usual linebacker. We can't forget he's improving his coverage skills and can't neglect his run stopping as well, " coach Lyle spoke.

Despite not putting up anything on the stat page after his sack in the second quarter, McClain led with 6 tackles. Most of the time, the offense had the ball, piling up 46 minutes of possession. The Raiders didn't pick up a ton of offense, not even 400 offensive yards. But they stayed mistake free, committing no turnovers while getting 3 from the Chargers.

One thing this does is it might change the mindset of what the team wants at quarterback. While McCoy doesn't look like a long-term solution at starting QB, he may have just shown the Raiders the kind of football to play. If so, then it might be Reshard Watson after all. Or someone similar who is good at throwing the short passes and, most importantly, avoiding mistakes.

                        Week 16 - Midweek News

                        NCAA Football News:

DT Jesse Akerley was shut out as the Appalachain State offensive line handled him with ease.

Pittsburgh MLB John Lugo had 19 tackles and a pick against the Cincinnati Bearcats.

Auburn's speed rushers gave Illinois LT Wade Gasper fits and exposed his flaws badly.

Chiefs HB Jamaal Charles will be playing in this week's game.

Jaguars passed 2,000 yards on the ground as a team this week.

Bengals have over 4,500 yards passing as a team after this week's performance.

WR A.J. Green has over 1,000 yards receiving.

WR Dwayne Bowe has 1,000 yards receiving on the season.

HB Michael Turner passed 1,000 yards rushing this week.

                        Raiders News:

                        Scouting:

Ole Miss CB Correy Fanning might be the team's first round pick. His athleticism continues to impress, and he's not afraid to chase down ball carriers. Doesn't have the super elite speed of some corners, but he's explosive in and out of cuts as well as off the snap.

Iowa CB Heston Hill could be high on the target list as well. He's not as refined as Fanning in some skill areas, like pursuit and tackling, but he's another athletic corner that does start to border on top-end speed. He is just as explosive as Fanning.

                        Notable Progression:

                        LB Jake Olsen
                        AWR: 86 to 87

                        RG Cale Welsh
                        PBK: 88 to 89

                        LG Aaryn DePriest
                        PBK: 80 to 81
                        STA: 75 to 77

                        HB Steven Grant
                        AWR: 79 to 80

Raiders have clinched home field advantage throughout the AFC playoff rounds. The Broncos and Chiefs have the inside track in their playoff pictures. Should both make it, the AFC West could be the NFL's toughest division this year with three teams having 10 or more wins.

There are no changes expected to the roster this week. The game plan will likely be the same as well. Grant received 36 touches last week, and the team will try to keep that number over 25, if not over 30 again this week.

                          Outplayed and Outmatched.
                          Raiders Defense No Match for
                          Desperate Steelers. Crushed 48-20

Not the way you want to end a successful regular season, but the Raiders defense just couldn't find a way to consistently stop a Steelers team that needed a win and playing at home.

There was not major failing, other than an odd Randall Cobb fumble that somehow when from his hands right into a Steelers' hands that went for a touchdown. Other than that, the defense just couldn't get a stop and the offense couldn't execute consistently.

That put the team in a situation they had avoided for many of the recent games, getting down big. That forced McCoy to do what he's least good at, trying to push the ball down the field. To his credit, McCoy did well considering what he was up against, having to throw 59 times, and he still avoided the interception.

Even then, the offense didn't play terribly, but it was a case of just not enough plays strung together, much like on the defensive side.

It was also another week of Rolando McClain taking out the starting HB and then the defense being unable to stop the backup. Baron Batch came in for Mendenhall and put up 129 yards on 20 carries, scoring 3 touchdowns in the process. Add that to the one score Mendenhall produce - on 11 carries for 59 yards - and it was 4 rushing touchdowns given up by a suddenly struggling run defense.

Rolando McClain was more like his usual self, but he had to leave the game with turf toe. He left with 9 tackles midway through the 3rd quarter. That was the most on the team. At the end of the game, those 9 tackles were still the most on the team.

Heath Miller also had a big day, posting up 180 yards receiving along with a touchdown. Cobb and McCants tailled around 80 yards a piece with Cobb having a touchdown. D'Andre Ware also scored a touchdown.

The loss snapped the seven-game winning streak, but the Raiders finish with the same record they had last season at 12-4.

                            Raiders in the Pro Bowl:

                            FB Marcel Reece
                            LG Aaryn DePriest
                            RG Cale Welch
                            RT Jeff Otah

                            DE Lamarr Houston
                            MLB Rolando McClain
                            CB Brandon Madison
                            K Sebastian Janikowski

Young corner Brandon Madison has been thrust into the limelight. He's taken the NFL by storm with his defensive play as well as rise from a flyer pick to dime back to Pro Bowl and Defensive Rookie of the Year cornerback. The young man is overwhelmed by it all, saying, "I just try to do my best with what God gave me. He gave me a fearless spirit and strong hands, and if jumping passes and stripping footballs is my calling, I want to do it to the max."

Rolando McClain's last few games weren't quite up to the usual standard...at least for him...but he still picked up 150 tackles on the year for the third consecutive year.

The trio of line backers are trying to 'convince' coach Lyle to switch to a 3-4, or at the least, stick with a hybrid concept like the Ravens use.

"We all want to be on the field. Rolando [McClain] has nothing to worry about, but myself, Tevin [Ash], and Tanner [Bailey], we need to prove ourselves. I realize it may take food off Rolando's plate, so to speak, but I think we could be the best quad of linebackers in football if given the chance, " linebacker Jake Olsen spoke.

Olsen might have a point, especially since the team owner is notorious for wanting top level linebacker play, and Lyle is in that same vein. Scouting for linebackers has continued, which is how Tanner Bailey arrived to begin with. The Raiders might want to go with a set of four and see what they can...and can't do.

Meanwhile, Colt McCoy is gaining some friends in the locker room. The increased play in the wideouts since McCoy might not be coincidence. It doesn't matter to Moore, he said he'll "catch anything thrown anywhere near me if at all possible", but the other receivers have an opinion. Ware, though, just isn't happy at all.

Start colt! He got you here you need to let him finish the run. You lost one game with colt and lost 3 with the ever inconsistent Terrelle Pryor. At least you know what your getting and you can prepare better with McCoy.
