    Week 8 - Midweek News

    No NCAA Football News.

Light day in the NFL as well, no major news occurring.

    Raiders News:

Raiders' Next Game: Raiders (6-0) @ Broncos (6-1)

    Notable Progression:

    RE Keithen Lett
    High Motor: No to Yes

    LB Kendle Maeweather
    PUR: 90 to 91
    MCV: 73 to 75
    ZCV: 64 to 65

    WR De'Aarius Bumpers
    RTE: 64 to 66

    CB Patrick Peterson
    TAK: 54 to 56

    Scouting News:

DT Brandon Ballard out of UAB looks interesting to some team scouts as he seems to have a very good understanding of reading blocks and the movement of the offensive line. He also works through blocks and pursues the ball carrier well. The problem is that he lost focus from time to time and some of this injury history looks mixed. He hasn't missed many games, but there are times where he comes off the field and has to miss plays. He's also not the best conditioned athlete.

MLB Brandon Randolph from Oregon State won't be making the team draft board anytime soon. He's a very average kid at the college level and that tends not to translate well to the NFL. Even with the team needing linebacker depth, Randolph is not interesting.

WR Avius Allen is a decent prospect. He has all the physical tools you want: blazing speed, strong vertical, quick feet and explosiveness. The down side comes from the finer points of being a WR. His route running isn't bad, but he gets timid in traffic and doesn't make extra effort for the football.

WR D'Antwone Baltimore (New Mexico) also seems decent. He makes a lot of effort to catch tough passes, but can't hold on consistently if contacted during the process of the catch. Otherwise, there's a lot to like about him. He's explosive, reasonably quick, and has NFL-level route running ability.

      Prater's Bad Day
Prater Misses Three Times While Raiders Rookie
Goes 4-for-4 to Help Offense Win 26-16.

It's not often Prater is unreliable. Typically, he's bombing field goals from 50 yards out at home. Today, though, he couldn't find his aim as he went 3-for-6 on the day.

The final score makes the misses look less striking, but for much of the game, those 9 points would have changed how the Raiders would have had to play and the overall complexion of the game.

The defense looked a bit less dominating in this one. No forced fumbles, just one takeaway at the end of the game and "only" a few sacks. The defense did clamp down on the run game, which helped make the Broncos a little more one-dimensional.

Of course, Josh Freeman was no push over. He and Maclin were in sync all day and giving Peterson fits. Maclin also picked on Madison, with similar success. J.J. Smoke was pretty much ignored, and Heyward-Bey was a non-factor. Maeweather clamped down on the TE as well, taking him out of the picture.

Speaking of Maeweather, it was a pretty blah game...by his standards. He had 10 tackles and a sack. Not bad of course, but nothing eye popping. He has only 68 tackles on the season in 7 games, so he's not on track to repeat his 180 tackles of his rookie year, but is on track for 150 tackles, which is still impressive. He's keeping the sacks coming, though, with 8 in seven games.

Offensively, RG3 had his most efficient game, picking up 276 yards with a TD and no INTs. He completed 57% of his passes as well. Griffin hooked up with Moore for the most receptions, but Justin Blackmon (remember him?) was the recipient of the TD pass. It was his only catch...and only target all game. And fantasy owners everywhere groaned at the TD going to a fourth-string WR instead of one of the starting 2 or 3.

DeRay Ray kicked off the scoring by ripping off a 41-yard run for a TD. It was the only time he found any significant space as the Denver linebackers closed in more readily after that. Still, to have that kind of "homerun hitter" is something the Raiders aren't used to from the HB position. Ray still earned some tough yards as well - going a grinding 15 for 38 yards outside of the big run.

The main turning point in the game was late in the 4th quarter. Up 23-16, the Raiders were trying to keep the lead. Freeman looked as though he might put a drive together, but he attacked deep to Hayward-Bey. DHB might have had a step on Smoke, but Shyquawn Johnson was there over the top and picked off the pass.

The turnover allowed the Raiders to move down the field and eat precious minutes off the clock. While held to a field goal as a pass intended for Moore on 3rd and short inside the Broncos' 5-yard line was knocked down, the score made it a two-possession game inside of 2 minutes.

The Raiders advance to 7-0 and open up another game lead on the Broncos directly, gaining a now 2-game advantage.

Yep, doing well so far. Avoiding the really bad games on offense to this point so the defense is allowed to go to work, though in this game, got a bit lucky perhaps with Prater's leg.

RG3 has helped as well. Tougher than Martens when taking a hit and the mobility as always useful. CPU messed up his tight spiral, though, so trying to get that back (damn trait bug).

Blackmon a No-Show, Reportedly Quit Team

News out of Raiders camp is that Justin Blackmon has been a no-show to practice all week. There was no official word about what happened until Lyle announced that he has waived the WR for conduct detrimental to the team.

"We need all 53 guys to be serious about this job. That what it is, a job. We call them 'games', but it's your livelihood, your profession. Justin [Blackmon] wasn't showing that commitment and we have relieved him of his job, " Lyle spoke at a press conference.

The Raiders will suffer a $1.8 M penalty on the salary cap, but it's money well spent according to many analysts.

"He has, what, 2 catches? I'm surprised he hung around as long as he did as he's been a pretty big disappointment. He's had opportunities before due to injuries and just lacks consistency, " one analyst commented.

A day later, Blackmon responded, saying that he was "frustrated".

"They bring you here, and then they draft guys to start over you and take opportunities that should be yours. Of course I'm frustrated. Why work when they don't want you to work?" Blackmon spoke.

The Raiders used the roster space to sign veteran middle linebacker Tavares Gooden, who was sitting on the waiver wire himself. Gooden provides much-needed linebacker depth and should relieve Jake Olsen from pulling double duty on the kick coverage team as well as starting outside linebacker.

              Week 9 - Midweek News

              NCAA Football News:

Georgia DE Kade Synder was ejected from last week's game for unsportsmanlike conduct. He cost his team as they suffered without his presence on the defensive line. Opinions are mixed as to whether or not his behavior was excusable considering some feel Synder was baited all game long with the refs looking the other way.

              NFL News:

Pro Bowl voting officially begins. WR Percy Harvin has drawn buzz for being ignored in the early going of the voting.

The Browns housed the Packers 50-10 last week. Trent Richardson scored twice on the ground to lead the rout.

Cardinals HB Jonathan Dwyer has been benched, according to reports. It's a decision that is not being well received at this point.

The Raiders are the NFL's lone unbeaten team at 7-0.

              Raiders News

The Raiders completed a perfect first-half of the season at 7-0 and will look to keep the strong play going. Everything has been going right for the Silver and Black and the few distractions that have come up have yet to shake the foundation of the team.

Still, there's a lot of football left and the AFC West rivals probably won't be going away. The Broncos dropped a game due to losing to the Raiders, but still sit at 6-2. The Chiefs are hanging around at 4-4 as well. A strong second half by either of those teams could make things difficult once again.

Raiders' Next Game: Raiders (7-0) @ Giants (4-4)

              Raiders Injury Report
              PosPlayerInjury Note
              --No Injuries--

The Raiders start the second half injury-free. However, this has been the case before and then the injury bug feeds voraciously.

              Roster News

The Pro Bowl voting has started. Raiders receiving early support include WRs Akia Green and Denarius Moore, RG Max Justice, and basically the whole defense. WR Denarius Moore is being panned for his inclusion as a potential participant, some *cough*Skip Bayless*cough* calling the wide out's performance so far "average".

Moore and Green are reunited at the top of the WR depth chart. De'Aarius Bumpers retains his slot role while Romonn Majors moves up to #4 with Blackmon's going AWOL.

              Transactions

              WR Justin Blackmon was released.
Free Agent MLB Tavares Gooden was signed to a 1-year contract.

                Raiders Cling to Perfection
Giants Mount Tenacious Rally, But Maeweather,
Defense Stands Strong in Final Minute. Raiders
                Hold on 27-24.

The Raiders are making this interesting. Not a lot of blowouts in the whole run to 8-0 so far, and this game was another one for the "too close for comfort" pile.

The Raiders defense keyed a 21-point 2nd quarter outburst. Maeweather got a strip sack and CB Brandon Madison jumped on the loose ball and jogged in for the touchdown.

LB/DE Tevin Ash forced a fumble that Immanuel Dawn fell on. That lead to RG3 finding WR Denarius Moore for a touchdown. This was on top of a pass to Akia Green earlier in the quarter. At the time, the score was 24-3 and the Giants fans were less than pleased with their team, booing them off the field at the half.

That seemed to wake up the G-Men as their second half was stronger both on offense and defense.

Rookie QB Tanner Hurns showed his moxie and started a drive down the field amidst the Raiders rush. TE Donterius Celestin emerged as a crucial target as he sparked the offense.

However, it would be HB Nathaniel Pennix who would power into the end zone to get the Giants closer to cap a methodical 10-play drive. That made the score 24-10.

That is how the 3rd quarter would end. RG3 was starting to face the fury of the Giants pass rush - taking a couple sacks and having to throw under duress frequently. To his credit, he avoided the turnover once again and made what he could out of plays. The third quarter was mostly the Raiders pinning the Giants deep...until rookie Rocco Vinopal missed a field goal.

As for the Giants, Celestin was giving the linebackers fits with his route running. Midway through the 4th quarter, he would make the Raiders pay for a blitz by beating Shyquawn Johnson and cruising into the end zone to make the score 24-17.

RG3 turned to Bull Griggs, playing due to an injury suffered by DeRay Ray early in the game. Griggs found a bit of running room to help move the ball. Griffin completed shorter passes to try to expose the Giants' blitz packages with some success. Short passes to Green helped move the ball, and De'Aarius Bumpers was a reliable safety valve.

Rocco Vinopal made this field goal, making the score was 27-17.

The Giants did not relent. Hurns started another drive down the field. He was picking up first downs, but the Raiders were making him using up a lot of precious time to do it. Then the rookie made a play.

Facing a strong 4-man rush, Hurns slid in the pocket and found a little room to step up. Meanwhile J.J. Smoke was covering WR DeSean Jackson on this play. Hurns put the ball in a tight space to Jackson with Smoke trying for the pick instead of the tackle. He failed and Jackson had a head of steam to the end zone - and he would not be caught. This made the game a 27-24 affair.

The Raiders were able to deplete the Giants' timeouts, but another error in Rocco Vinopal's second missed field goal wasted the opportunity to make it a six-point lead. While Lyle reamed out his young kicker, the defense had to dig in and try to save the game.

Hurns took the snap and hit Celestin yet again to get the drive started. The Raiders were trying to find some kind of coverage to handle the tight end, but then Davone Bess, kept quiet most of the game by Peterson, made a few catches for first downs.

Nearing midfield, the Raiders tried to turn up the pressure. Ndamukong Suh broke through after Maeweather disrupted the pocket and spooked the rookie QB. On third down no blitz pressure to try to mix it up, and it worked as Keithen Lett made his way through to force a short throw. Finally, on fourth down, Maeweather came through and found his third sack of the game to end the threat.

"What a game!" Maeweather spoke to an on-field reporter, "We just believed in ourselves and came together as a team when it counted. We know we can handle pressure situations - just a matter of getting it done like we're able and we did it."

Maeweather ended the game with 11 tackles (9 solo), 3 sacks and a forced fumble. The team ended with 6 sacks as a whole, and Maeweather's three gives the Raiders three players with 10 or more sacks on the season.

"That pass rush is so key to their success. If they can't make it happen, the coverage tends to get a bit exposed, but when they get the pressures when they need them - that defense is very tough, " one commentator spoke.

In addition, the win marked coach Ander Lyle's 100th career win. His career record currently stands at 100-35.

"Lyle's hard-nosed, aggressive approach to the game has rubbed off on his players and led the way to this milestone. He has his guys playing hard and smart football. The players believe in him and he preaches believing in the guy next to you, " Schlereth commented.

                    Week 10 - Midweek News

                    NCAA Football News:

Clemson WR Trent Platt shattered both team and NCAA records with his performance this far - generating a lot of interest from scouts.

                    NFL News:

Texans' HB Arian Foster is expected to be active this week.

The Broncos look forward to seeing OLB Von Miller back on the field this week.

QB Jay Culter is now 8th all-time in passing TDs.

The Packers and Vikings played to a rare tie last week, 26-26. This in spite of Vikings QB Mark Mallet throwing interceptions with no touchdowns.

The Bucs squeezed past the Saints 20-17, holding off a late rally for the win.

                    Raiders News

The Raiders keep their run for perfection going with a tough win last week. They'll remain on the road, but not have to travel as the Jets are next on the agenda for the fourth game of a five game road trip.

Aside from trying to stay perfect, the Raiders are trying to keep the Broncos at arm's length (Broncos were on the bye last week). The Chargers won, trying to maybe get back in the race at 4-5. The Chiefs did not play and remain at 4-4.

Raiders' Next Game: Raiders (8-0) @ Jets (2-6)

                    Raiders Injury Report
                    PosPlayerInjury Note
                    --No Injuries--

The clean injury report is mildly deceiving as players have been knocked out of the game. Still, the Raiders are plenty fortunate to be able to dress their all of its regulars at this point of the season.

                    Roster News:

CB Brandon Madison was honored with an AFC Defensive Player of the Week Award.

Not much to change on the depth charts as Bumpers did well in the slot and of course Green and Moore are virtual givens if healthy. DeRay Ray is partly on the bubble as his big play ability is offset by injuries and lately a bit of fumblitis. For now, he is the starter, but Bull Griggs is eager and more than willing to be the feature back once again.

                    Notable Progression:

                    LB Kendle Maeweather
                    BSH: 90 to 91

                    LB Tevin Ash
                    STR: 86 to 87

                    FB Kaelin Hinder
                    AWR: 58 to 59

                    HB Bull Griggs
                    RTE: 49 to 50

                    Scouting News:

Like many teams, the Raiders scouted WR Trent Platt (Clemson). Team scouts feel he's got the goods to be a #1 WR in the NFL. His top end speed is high-end, he gets off the line very well, and he can go up to make the catch on jump balls downfield. Only blemish is that he needs more refined route running. That and he's probably a top 5 pick, well out of the Raiders' range.

UCF wide receiver Dominque Barnes also received a favorable scouting report. He features solid hands with an excellent ability to attack the ball in the air and make the tough catches. Not quite as explosive as Platt, but the same sort of speed is there. Like Platt, Barnes needs to work on routes and tends to lose focus. Still, at a projected 3rd round selection, this kid will be on the board come April.

CB Jaron Odom (San Jose St.) may make the Raiders wish they hadn't extended Patrick Peterson. Jaron is looking like an exceptional prospect - a steal at the projected 3rd round spot he's slotted at currently. His speed on tape looks first-rate, and his quickness and explosiveness allow him to keep up with most wide outs. He's also exceptional in man coverage and is not terrible at catching the ball.

DT Xavier Jones (Tennessee) is hard to figure out. He isn't very agile and shows bad footwork, but he gets off the ball well. He's tends to be able to keep up, but sometimes doesn't read plays well at all. He's not a pure space-filler as he has decent pass rushing, but isn't great at that either. Hard to see what has him rated as a mid-1st selection.

:04 on the Clock After RG3 Rallies Raiders.
                      9-0 After Nail-Biting 25-24 Win.

So what do you do when your marquee QB is struggling and getting little help from the offensive line?

Keep throwing because it will work, evidently.

Because that's just what RG3 did. He kept throwing. And started finding room with his legs.

And something happened in the 4th quarter. Either he rose to the occasion or chasing around Moore, Green and Bumpers wore down the defense as much as any power run game did.

Whatever it was, RG3 started finding some running room to keep key drives alive. Green started beating Darelle Revis. The Jets started blitzing, which opened up Willison and Bumpers where earlier the blitz would get home and cause a bad throw.

"I'm going to be sore after this, " Griffin laughed after throwing 56 times and taking 4 sacks, "This was football today. Glad we could make it a winner."

For 3 quarters, it looked like the Raiders' unbeaten run would end at the hands of one of the worst teams in the NFL. Terry Carter was laser accurate all game, and the Raiders pass rush was not consistent, despite picking up 4 sacks.

The coverage was a step late the whole game. J.J. Smoke got made to look silly against Massaquoi and burned on his way to the end zone. Ryan Matthews even evaded Maeweather with a sharp cut and scored. Everything that went right in prior weeks looked to be catching up to the Raiders this week. The only thing the coverage did was give ex-Raider Sindey Rice a severe injury on a very questionable hit from Shyquawn Johnson. No flag was thrown, but Rice was defenseless, trying to make a sideline catch and Johnson took out Rice's knees and drove him 5 yards out of bounds.

"How the **** was no flag ******** thrown? That's some messed up **** right there. Bull [crap] all the way, " Rice ranted at a reporter after the game, "**** player safety talk, they don't ******** care."

Down 21-9, the Raiders offense continued to lean on RG3's arm and the talent of the receivers. Griffin started putting some throws together and moving around in the pocket more was the Jets' rush started slowing down. DeRay Ray didn't have a ton of work, in fact a pretty light load, but he slashed on the ground enough and Griggs would power ahead for first downs on 3rd and short.

Later in the drive, he hit Akia Green in the end zone for his first TD on the day and made the score 21-16, Jets.

The Jets picked up a couple first downs, but were shut down as the linebackers started going to work on the Jets' run game. With the Jets playing conservative to protect the lead, the defense was able to go aggressive and Maeweather made a big stop on 3rd and short to force a punt.

Griffin went back to work, finding open receivers and throwing a mix of route combinations at the Jets secondary. Griffin also ran for a couple first downs on the drive to further keep the Jets mixed up. To finish off the drive, Griffin hit TE Tim Willison on a deep corner route off play action with a beautiful throw towards the back pylon for the good-ahead score. The Raiders had their first lead of the game since being up 3-0 in the first quarter.

The score now 22-21, Raiders, Terry Carter decided to match RG3. The Raiders' secondary looked like it was getting back into one of those "funks" and Carter was hitting his targets, mostly Pettigrew. But the big blow was against Jake Olsen as Carter found Ryan Matthews. The pass rush was an epic failure on the play and Matthews improvised his swing route into a wheel and Jake Olsen could not recover quite in time. The step or two was enough and Matthews took off down the sideline. Shyquawn Johnson was there to stop the play, or it would have gone for 6.

As it was, the Jets were well within Cundiff's field goal range. The Raiders came hard to try to knock the Jets back, but three runs pretty much kept the Jets right where they were. The Raiders spent their time outs and the defense did the job.

Cundiff drove the ball through to give the Jets a 24-22 lead.

The Raiders had 1:22 and no timeouts to save their perfect record. RG3 knew what he had to do and didn't panic.

He continued to work the ball to his receivers, favoring Green once again. The quick-yet-methodical drive continued after a 10-yard run by RG3 and then a screen to DeRay Ray for another dozen. Ray made a rookie mistake, however, and didn't get out of bounds.

RG3 hurried the players to the line, not wanting to spike the ball and give the Jets time to reset. He called for a quick pass, expecting a possible blitz, and hit Bumpers against the zone (no blitz) for 7.

The short throw gave Griffin time to hurry back to the line, wait a couple seconds and then spike the ball with 0:07 left on the clock. Rocco Vinopal's kick would be the final play of the game, win or lose.

"That's what I wanted. I wanted to give us one last shot to win, and if we got the field goal, I wanted no time for them to pull off a miracle, " Griffin spoke in the postgame press conference.

The rookie trotted out to the field and lined up his kick. After the Vikings tried to ice the rookie, the young kicker delivered on his 4th strike of the day, this one giving the Raiders the win.

The team mobbed the kicker in excitement, both happy and feeling lucky to be unbeaten.

The 9-0 start is the best under Lyle's watch. The team seems to be getting closer each week to suffering a defeat...can the Raiders keep finding a way if the defense keeps allowing 20 or more points?

Ravens HB Ray Rice continues to march up the all-time rankings, this time passing Marshawn Lynch in all-time rushing yards.

Bears WR Brandon Marshall continues to climb in the all-time receptions rankings, now 5th all-time.

Jets are expected to lose HB Ryan Matthews for a couple weeks.

Jets also report that WR Sidney Rice will be out for several weeks after the hit he took in last week's contest with the Raiders.

The Raiders are unbeaten at 9-0, but the Bears have been nearly as hot, winning 7 straight to go from 0-2 to 7-2.

                              Raiders News

The Broncos continue to dog the Raiders in the standings after getting back on the winning track. At 7-2, the Broncos are well within striking range of the division. The Chiefs and Chargers can't get out of their own way at this point, both of whom are 4-5.

The Raiders will have to face another top tier QB in the person of Andrew Luck, who has blossomed into a monster QB.

                              --No Injuries--

Among the fortunate things that has happened this season, the lack of injuries in general has been one of them, and it continues again this week.

                              Roster News:

DeRay Ray might have saved his starting job with last week's solid performance. He starts this week.

FS Shyquawn Johnson will be given a week off by the league for his hit on Sidney Rice.

"I feel the officials should have thrown a flag there, but regardless, the hit was unnecessary and unnecessarily vicious for the game situation. I've suspended Mr. Johnson for 1 game without pay, " commissioner Goodel spoke.

Lamel Seawood will get the call at free safety this week.

No other roster news to report - not much to change when you're winning every game.

Griffin Has Best Game as a Raider - Throws 4 TDs
to Lead Attack. Raiders at 10-0 With 38-27 Win Over Eagles.

The Raiders aren't getting any respect from the media for their run and Ross Tucker made a snide comment about the "football being corked" in reference to RG3's 4 TD day. Michael Johnson was player of the game despite his team losing.

But the Raiders aren't listening and don't seem to care about such things as they complete the first five games of a seven road games in eight weeks stretch with the perfect record intact.

This game was more indicative of a team looking for history, especially on the offensive side. Griffin hooked up with Denarius Moore for two big TD plays and he bought time with his legs to throw a jump ball to Akia Green - and Green came down with it to set up his own TD a couple plays later.

He found Tim Willison in the first quarter after Maeweather forced his second fumble of the game.

"That guy is an animal on the field, " one commentator spoke of the mild-mannered Maeweather, "Some were wondering what's up early on, but it looks like Maeweather is his full self now."

The defense wasn't particularly special in general. The coverage is starting go through a lull of sorts with no plays coming from the DBs (aside from the hard-hitting Shyquawn Johnson or Lamel Seawood forcing fumbles). Part of that is the team is picking on the nickle and dime corners and the linebackers. Patrick Peterson didn't see a ball thrown his way and Smoke only saw a few. Madison and Maeweather saw more frequent action as did Lorenzo Hopkins, the dime corner.

Although, seven of the Eagles' points came on Griffin's only mistake with the football. He tried to make something and saw DeRay Ray releasing late, but Michael Johnson was simply baiting the throw and picked off the soft pass. Johnson then found pay dirt on the return. Take away those points and the defense really allowed just 20 points, which is consistent with the last few games.

Luck didn't go quietly, but the defense did enough to keep him off balance and out of rhythm for much of the game. Luck was forced to scramble, which led to a fumble of his own caused by James Hazzard. Griffin also fumbled trying to do too much on a run downfield instead of wisely getting out of bounds.

The Raiders got "only" three sacks - one each from it's trio of 10+ sacks players, Lett, Ash and Maeweather. Maeweather's sack was a shoestring tackle as Luck nearly escaped.

Raiders' fans will be ecstatic to greet their still-unbeaten Raiders when they finally return home next week. After than, they'll have two more road games, then finish down the stretch with a trio of home games. Could the Black Hole faithful be able to watch their team try for history right on their own field?

"We're going to do what we can to make it happen. No resting players or anything like that - all out balls to the wall going for 16-0. We have something going, and if we keep it going, we'll be forced to cool off with the bye in the first round, so we need to go 100% to stay sharp and keep our intensity up, " coach Lyle commented postgame.
