Re: Tulane Football: "From Worst to First"

Very nice write up. It's funny because right now I am currently running with Hawaii. I sure hope the Broncos can run over the Ducks like they did the Warriors.

Tough season for the Wave, but it looks like you have a pretty solid class coming in, so maybe next year

      Clemson Brings It Home

      Clemson 38, Nebraska 14

Once again, the Big Ten becomes the butt of everyone’s joke. The talk of Big Ten teams not being able to compete with the nation’s (mostly Southern) elite came true once again, with the Huskers getting destroyed in South Beach. Clemson QB Chad Kelly put on quite the show in the process, and may have heavily boosted his draft stock for this April.

      Oregon 31, Boise State 20

The Ducks & Broncos met on the gridiron in Pasadena to see who would bring home the roses. Boise hung with ‘em for a while, but the mighty Quack Attack prevailed in the end. With the win, Chip Kelly is now the winningest coach of the past 5 years.

Oh yeah, no innocent Bronco players were punched in the playing of this game.

      Texas 30, LSU 20

Doesn’t sound like Texas had a problem facing the mighy Bayou Bengals after all. A very competitive game came down to the last few possessions, with the ‘Horns squeaking out the 10-pt win.

      Northern Illinois 35, Auburn 25

In what may have been the biggest shocker of the bowl season, Northern Illinois went into Sun Life Stadium in Miami and delivered a blow to the SEC’s high-ranking elite. And in all honesty, it wasn’t that close either. Don’t let the score fool you, Auburn played come-from-behind for much of the contest.

      Virginia Tech 51, Iowa 21

Perhaps the other surprise of the bowl season was Virginia Tech’s performance in the Fiesta Bowl. Rather than coming out flat in a game they didn’t plan to be in, they looked absolutely dominant in handling one of the Big Ten’s best. And for Iowa, losing in the fashion they did only perpetuates the Big Ten weakness stereotype even further…

        Wrapping up The Season

Clemson, Nebraska split AP Title; Auburn's Smith wins Heisman

A final look at the AP Poll yields some interesting things.

        1) Clemson wins the NC in strong fashion, yet the voters continue to believe the Cornhuskers are still the best team in the country. Nebraska got 52 first-place votes in the final AP Poll, while Clemson didn't get any. Heck, even Boise State & Northern Illinois got 1st-place votes. That's right, NORTHERN ILLINOIS. With that in mind, the Associated Press & the voters of the Coaches Poll agreed to split the national title between the two schools. Clemson obviously feels robbed. They, after all, have the trophy.

        2) Boise State & Auburn both lost their respective bowl games, yet lost no ground in the final poll. While NIU was already highly-ranked, Oregon knocked off a top-5 team in Boise, yet moved up only one spot in the final poll to 15.

Anyway, in other news, Auburn HB Eric Smith walks away with this year's Heisman Trophy. Only to continue the streak of Heisman winners flopping in their bowl games. And only 1 of the 4 AAC bowl-eligible teams won their respective game (UConn).

What's even funnier Deuce, I'm now running with SMU.lol. I moved on after 4 years of just scouting at Texas St. and went to SMU as a OC. Will stay there till I max my Coach out the the Game side of the tree, then will take a school in texas as a HC till I max out the Scouting part of the tree then head to Texas.

                Willingham Signs 3-yr Contract Extension

Coach Kaelyn Willingham and Tulane AD Rick Dickson announced the signing of a 3-yr contract extension for Willingham that will keep him in New Orleans through the 2019 season. The two sides were able to agree on a deal that will pay him $1.2 million annually and up to $300,000 per year in bonuses, provided the football team meet specific goals set by the AD each season. Both sides are glad to get the extension out of the way so that attention can be refocused on the goal at hand: winning.

Willingham: "I'm really excited to get this deal done to remain head football coach. My wife & I love it here in New Orleans, I love these players and the University has done a great job embracing us as a whole. I'm looking forward to the exciting future that is Green Wave football."

Willingham did get a few offers from other coaching jobs this offseason, most notably the head coaching jobs at Syracuse and Rutgers. He says the Rutgers job was intriguing to him, having grown up a native Ohioan who grew up loving Big Ten football. But ultimately he couldn't see himself leaving behind what he has already created in New Orleans. Plus you can't beat the Deep South weather.

A press conference to announce the extension will he held this Thursday afternoon at the Tulane Athletic Office.

                  Going Home

Former Alabama (and New Mexico) coach Nick Saban returns home to his alma mater Kent State, for what could be his last go-around as a football coach.

Nick Saban has left the University of New Mexico, returning home to the Great Midwest. Perhaps he hated the heat, the lack of media attention in Albuquerque, or simply he hated coaching a quite TERRIBLE football team. but he's at Kent State now, where he was once a player under Don James in the early 1970s. Could this be his last go-around as a head coach?

Some other interesting coaching moves have transpired this offseason:

*Art Briles, fired from Texas Tech, has resurfaced in Ohio, taking over the Akron Zips program.

*June Jones has signed an extension to remain at Bowling Green.

*Boise's Chris Petersen has signed a 3-yr extension to keep him on the Blue Turf even longer.

*Wisconsin has fired Bret Bielema after a 5-7 season, and he is now the DC at Arkansas. (Interesting...)

*Even more interesting: Tommy Tuberville has stepped down from his post as UConn HC to take the DC job at Colorado State. Hmmm...

*Florida DC Brent Pease is hired as the new HC at South Carolina, replacing the retiring Steve Spurrier.

*Darrell Hazell is now the new HC at Vanderbilt.

*Rich Ellerson extends his HC contract at Army.

*Charlie Weis is now the HC at New Mexico State.

                    Transfers/NFL Draft

Freshman RG Cole Campbell has decided to transfer from the Tulane program as of this spring. Feeling as if he wasn't getting enough playing time as he should, he has decided to take an offer to potentially start for Middle Tennessee State in 2018. He'll sit out this season. The irony is, Campbell was actually in the running to take over the RG spot this Spring with Nick Bradley moving over to the left side (after Bob Bradley's graduation).

On the bright side, Coach Willingham has received word recently that Tramon Patrick, a Freshman guard for the Iowa Hawkeyes this past season, has interest in transferring to Tulane. After assessing the depth on the offensive line, Willingham decided to accept Patrick's transfer request, seeing it as an upgrade over Campbell. Patrick will sit out this season, then have a strong chance of competing for a starting job in 2018.

Congratulations go out to now-former QB Devin Powell, who was selected in the 3rd round of this year's NFL Draft. He was selected with the 84th overall pick by the Tennessee Titans. Many in Nashville believe Powell has the ability to become the next Warren Moon, who played for the old Houston Oilers back in the day. Time will tell whether or not Powell, one of the nation's best dual-threat QB's the past few years, lives up to the hype. But he will likely enter a wide-open QB competition in training camp this summer.

Powell was the only Tulane player selected in this year's draft. He also became the first player drafted in the Willingham era.

                      Tulane Reels In 7th-Best Class

With a class consisting of nine 4-stars and twelve 3-stars, Tulane managed to reel in the nation's 7th-best recruiting class on Signing Day. The total class sums to 24, which includes 4 players who have decided to commit to Tulane as preferred walk-ons. It is currently unknown whether or not the preferred walk-ons (or any of the scholarship commits, for that matter) will make the final 70-man roster in the fall, but they will have just as fair a shot at earning a scholarship as a scholarship-holder has of keeping one. Overall, the Green Wave signed 2 players ranked in the SPARQ 100, and a whopping 6 players ranked in the ESPN 150.

The top player overall in the State of Louisiana (Tulane's home state) was DE Mark Thomas, a 5-star DE who surprisingly signed with Arkansas State.

The top-rated player in the nation was ATH Stephen Wilkinson, from Anderson, SC, who decided to sign with the National Champion Clemson Tigers.

Without further ado, here is Tulane's Class of 2017.

                      Academic Stats:
                      Average GPA: 3.147

                      Average ACT score: 28-29

As you can see, the main objective of recruting this past year was trying to repair a seemingly broken defense from last season. Much of the talent acquired was in the form of either pass rushers or cover players in the secondary. Even more, with the exception of T.C. Pickens (who'll likely play RB), all the other ATH's recruited are expected to play on defense, should they make the team.

Comparing with the rest of the country, South Bend's own Notre Dame managed to collect the nation's best recruiting class this year, reeling in four 5-stars, fourteen 4-stars and seven 3-stars. What's more shocking than Tulane pulling in a Top-10 class, is Temple managing to sign 4 of the nation's top 10 RB's. Yes, FOUR of them, to TEMPLE. That Tulane-Temple game next year is looking close to being a game of a thousand rushing yards.

Here are the nation's Top 25 classes:

                      Rank) Team Name (# 5*'s/# 4*'s/# 3*'s)

                      1) Notre Dame (4/14/7)
                      2) Iowa (5/11/5)
                      3) Auburn (4/11/8)
                      4) Alabama (3/6/14) (kinda shocking, actually...)
                      5) Texas (1/9/13) (also shocking)
                      6) Boise State (3/4/15)
                      7) Tulane (0/9/12)
                      8) Clemson (3/4/10)
                      9) Ohio State (1/5/13) (wha...?????)
                      10) Nebraska (2/6/7)

                      11) Temple (0/5/16)
                      12) Georgia (3/2/10)
                      13) South Carolina (3/2/10)
                      14) Virginia Tech (0/6/13)
                      15) Oregon (2/5/6)
                      16) Florida State (0/5/12)
                      17) West Virginia (0/5/12)
                      18) Texas A&M (0/2/19)
                      19) Oklahoma State (1/6/6)
                      20) Maryland (0/5/12)

                      21) Oklahoma (2/3/9)
                      22) Stanford (1/3/12)
                      23) North Carolina (1/4/10)
                      24) Mississippi State (0/4/15)
                      25) LSU (1/5/9) (surprised to see them down this low...)

Kent State coach Nick Saban: "What! How'd they [Tulane] manage to sign a top-10 class?"

ESPN's Skip Bayless: "Hmmm, I smell something fishy here with Tulane. SMU, perhaps?"
ESPN's Stephen A. Smith: "Don't be so disrespectful."

Re: Tulane Football: "From Worst to First"

The following players have had their positions changed:

ATH T.C. Pickens moved to HB (as expected)
RG Nick Bradley moved to LG (he played LG all last season)
LG Jeff Smith moved to RG (he spent time on the right side last season)
ATH Matt Taylor moved to DE (his freakish athleticism for his size would make him an offensive weapon automatically, so teaching him defense could make him the next Myles Jack)

ATH Jason Harper moved to CB (he may start this season)
ATH Robert Bryan moved to CB
ATH Claude James moved to FS (he may split time w/ incumbent Tony Parker)
ATH Bruce McDaniel moved to SS (he may split time w/ incumbent Terrence Thomas)

xboxxerx: Nick Saban's New Mexico Lobos finished 4-7 last season. Good enough for 5th place in the MWC's Mountain Division. I'm hoping Kent State's much more successful for him.

It only makes sense that Nick Saban would "leave" a terrible team. Likely because he can't put up with not making a bowl game.
