Battles to be Settled in Fall Camp

          QUARTERBACK
Bryan Higgins returns to the QB position full-time, after spending much of last season at WR. But he will have to prove he hasn't forgotten how to play the position with freshman Adam Barnes fighting for the starting spot. The coaches really like Adam, so Bryan's got his work cut out for him. Soph. Cameron Jackson & True Fr. John Moore will likely fight for the backup spots.

          SLOT RECEIVER
The Wave will be looking for a new man to take over the slot receiver spot in the WR corps. Coach Willingham wants a speedy guy who can catch, receive option pitches and handle jet sweeps, so look for freshmen Corey Brown & Stephen Randle and sophomore Jason Eaton to compete for that job.

          OFFENSIVE LINE
With the graduations of T Nathan Sheinle, G Bob Bradley & C Anthony Larkin, new men will be asked to step up on the offensive line this year. Nick Bradley appears to have the LG spot locked down, while Jeff Smith will play RG. But at the tackle spots & center, expect competition. RS Jr. Clint West aims to keep the C position he held down for much of last year, but he'll have to fight off RS Sr. Jason Thomas to do so. The tackle spots are completely up for grabs w/ Phil Maxwell, Brandon Palmer, Carlos Tucker & Erik Lane fighting for those.

          DEFENSIVE LINE
Willie Ross returns as the D-line's best "sacker" from last season, but new players will surround him in the starting lineup. Jeremy Weber has graduated, so his LE spot is up for grabs. RS Sr. Trevor Phillips will compete with freshman Jason Huggins (who the coaches are really excited about) and RS Soph. Randall Flowers. On the right side Corey Walton may have finally nailed down that position. But Cedric Jackson is there just in case. Meanwhile Ross will look to see who will start alongside him in the 4-2-5 defensive alignment the coaches are installing. Bobby Moyer and Eddie Cox will fight for that position.

          LINEBACKING CORPS
With the starting 3 LB's all graduating in the Spring, the Wave will have lots of work to do to replace their production. Freshmen & sophomores run amok at these positions, so expect some growing pains. Fred Arnold, Todd Carter & Ross Fowler are the elder statesmen, so expect them to show youngsters Jason Muhammad, Calvin Walker, Tom Grier & Cedric Young the ropes.

          SECONDARY
Arguably the worst spot on the defense last year was in the secondary. Charlie Smith appeared at times to be the only guy out there who knew his assignments, but what about the rest? Senior Shaun Powers has been relegated to Nickel corner after proving to be horrible in man coverage last season, leaving the coaches to hope that JUCO transfer Jason Harper can get caught up to speed. But will he? Tony Parker & Terrence Thomas will keep their Safety spots for now, but will they long-term?

All these questions and more will hopefully be resolved during the 1st-annual Tulane Fall Game. Keep reading to learn more.

            New Tradition: Tulane Fall Game

A first for the program under Head Coach Kaelyn Willingham, the Green Wave will implement a "Fall Game" into their Fall Camp. Much like their Spring practice, the Fall Game will be an annual scrimmage between the starters & backups. But the Fall Game will have a twist: rather than dividing the roster up into a "Green team" & "White team" (like the Spring Game), the Fall Game will be played "Offense vs. Defense." Here's how the rules for the Fall Game will work:

            Basics:
            • No Game Clock
Play Clock will be kept by the coaches, and will count down from :15 once the players break the huddle.
            • No Kickoffs
Each possession will begin from the 20-yard line.
            • Each QB will be given 5 possessions on offense to work with. This will determine the duration of the game.
(In 2017 there are 4 QB's on the roster, so this year's Fall Game will last exactly 20 possessions.)
            • Rules concerning downs remain exactly the same. 4 downs for a 1st Down.
            • Turnover on Downs will result in the ball being placed back at the 20-yd line. NO punts.
            • During each possession the offense will work out of the same formation on every play, unless the QB decides to audible. The QB's themselves will decide the plays (They wear wristbands.).
            • After each QB has run through his 5 possessions, that will be the end of 1 "quarter."
            • Breaks will be taken after each "quarter."
            • The offense's objective is to "make plays"; the defense's objective is to "break plays".
            • NO Overtime. When both sides have equal points at the end of regulation, the result is a tie.

            Offensive Scoring:
            • Offensive scoring works the same (6 pts for a TD, 3 pts for a FG).
            • After each TD scored on offense, a 2-pt attempt MUST be attempted (from the 3-yd line). No XP's.

            Defensive Scoring:

Defensive scoring will work as follows:
            • 3 pts for an INT
            • 6 pts for a "Pick Six"
            • 2 pts for a forced fumble
            • 3 pts for a forced fumble AND recovery
            • 6 pts for a forced fumble AND recovery AND return for touchdown
            • 2 pts for a sack
            • 2 pts for a safety
            • 2 pts for forcing Turnover on Downs
            • NO conversion attempt will be attempted after a defensive score.

The side that has the most points at the end wins. The Fall Game will be used as a way for the coaches to do an in-depth analysis of their players & their knowledge of the playbook. The Fall Game will be televised on local TV.

                Great idea ksw.

I loved when NCAA had the spring games in the old ps2 versions, but it sucks that they took it out.

I used to always practice like this. Practice like it's an actual game. Just thought for once I'd formally keep track of it, haha.

Defense Shines in 1st Fall Game

Charlie Smith nabbing a pick mid-air.

Coach Willingham didn't know going into the 1st-ever Fall Game which side of the ball would outperform the other. Surprisingly it was the defense outdoing the offense. Sacks, turnovers & all helped the defense prevail in the 1st annual Tulane Fall Game, 57-34. The offense moved the ball decently, but the defense made more than enough plays to win it. Bryan Higgins led the first-team offense and played well, tossing two TD passes (one to FB Fred Roach, the other to WR Justin Fountain.) Though they moved the ball okay, the first-team defense forced Higgins to a turnover-on-downs and 3 sacks.

The second-team offense was far worse. The difference between Bryan Higgins and Adam Barnes in the game was that you could tell who was the freshman and who wasn't. Barnes led the 2nd team to just 6 points, a Shawn Henry 2-yd run. More sacks, a fumble and 2 INT's later, the defense led by 9 at the half. Barnes looked rattled at times, forcing throws he shouldn't have, taking off rather than letting the play develop. Clearly he's got work to do if he wants to be ready for the opener.

One of the best players on offense for the day was QB Cameron Jackson. The sophomore seemingly outplayed the other QB's despite throwing 2 INTs, running the ball well & hitting the receivers in stride. Jackson ran all over the second-team defense, on his way to 95 yds on the ground. He and WR Jason Eaton made a lot of plays in the game, proving they deserve more attention from the coaches. He spoke to media reporters after the game:

Jackson: "The plays just seemed to be open to me today. I just took what the defense gave me and ran with it. Pun intended."

When asked if he had earned the starting QB job:

Jackson: "It's only one practice, but I don't see why not. It's an open job ain't it?"

The fourth-team offense failed to score. QB John Moore led the team on a heavy dose of the run, and was still prone to the sacks & INTs. With the game 41-34 in favor of the defense after 3, all Moore had to do was lead the offense to two TD's in 5 possessions. Instead they gave up 16 more points to the defense, en route to the 23-pt loss. Clearly the coaches learned after the game that their offense (particularly the QBs) have a lot of work to do.

Willingham: "Obviously our quarterbacks have a lot of work to do to get ready for the opener. This team's talented. But they'll only go as far as the quarterbacks will allow them to."

The 2017 schedule will be released soon. Until then the Green Wave will work to knock the kinks out of their gameplans. And settle on a quarterback.

Shawn Henry jukes a defender on way to a 40-yd run.

Aaron Gandy receiving a vicious hit after a catch.

QB Cam Jackson ran hard today, amassing almost 100 in just 5 possessions.

Just wanted to say that I'm all caught up, and this is phenomenal. This has become one of the dynasties that I really want my upcoming dynasty with Army to be like.

                                2017 Depth Chart Released

Higgins named QB for opener; Lines Solidified

The Fall Game left many questions on the offensive side of the ball. But Bryan Higgins has won the QB job. For now. Expect Higgins, Adam Barnes, and maybe Cam Jackson to see action in the season opener. With the best performer holding the job going forward.

Jason Eaton has won the job at Slot/Option Receiver.

With the battles on the O-line so close, Coach Willingham has decided to go with experience. RS Jr Phil Maxwell will open the season at the LT spot, while RS Sr Brandon Palmer will play the right. Clint West will hold onto the Center position for now. On the D-line, Corey Walton and Trevor Phillips will swap places. Walton will move to the LE spot to better utilize his run stopping abilities, while Phillips will move to RE (as he is the more athletic pass rusher). Bobby Moyer has won the right to start alongside Willie Ross at DT, due to his outstanding Fall Game performance.

Jason Harper will begin the season as the 2nd Corner, opposite Charlie Smith. Shaun Powers will begin as the Nickel corner, but could move to #2 should Harper struggle.
